Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: J. Snipes MP518 LH_B and LH_D NINJA Capillary Testing This will be a full day run to continue testing the new LH NINJA capillaries. Since we already confirmed on 1071219 that the system can operate at up to 700kW without arcing we will now move on to see if gas injection can help with coupling over long distances between the grill and the seperatrix. Plasma Setup: Overnight ECDC. Cryopump on all shots. Start with 1071219032. LH Setup: 90 degree current drive phasing, 1.5mm behind limiter, start at 40kV beam voltage and 85kW per klystron, firing from .7 to 1.3 seconds. Shot Plan: 1) Start at 90kW per klystron. NINJA off and outer gap constant at 1.5cm during LH pulse for the first shot to get a baseline for the coupling. Repeat shot with different control gains if density varies by more than +/-10%. 2) Repeat shot 1 with ~5psi NINJA puff on B and D side with puff triggering from 0.55s to 1.25s. 2a) Repeat shot 1 with ~5psi NINJA puff on B and D side but LH turned off. 3) Increase outer gap to 2.5cm with NINJA and LH on. 4) If waves are able to couple at 2.5cm, increase outer gap to 3.5cm with NINJA and LH on. 5) If waves are able to couple at 3.5cm outer gap, increase outer gap to a maximum of 4.5cm during LH pulse with NINJA and LH on. 6-9) Repeat shots 2-5 with ~10psi NINJA puff on B and D side. 10) Sweep outer gap from 1.5cm at .7s to 4.5cm at 1.3s. Keep NINJA off. 11) Repeat shot 10 with ~5psi NINJA puff on B and D side with puff triggering from 0.55s to 1.25s. 12) Repeat shot 10 with ~10psi NINJA puff on B and D side with puff triggering from 0.55s to 1.25s. 13) Cell access to move launcher to 5mm behind limiter. Repeat shot 1 to get a baseline at this grill location. 14-21) Repeat shots 2-9 with launcher at 5mm behind limiter. If time allows: Increase power to maximum available. |

| Session Leader Summary for 1080109
MP518: LH_B and LH_D NINJA Capillary Testing Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: J. Snipes This was the second day of operation for MP518. The first run day, 1071219, was cut short due to the so-called "Wallace Phenomenon," better known as the afternoon fizzles. Initial results from 1071219 showed that the combination of a gas puff from the LH NINJA capillaries and LH power levels in excess of 500kW produced higher density at the LH grill for the same line integrated density in lower null, however the LH coupling did not improve as dramatically as we would have hoped. Unfortunately we were unable to keep core densities as low as we wished in lower null, hence the move to upper null with cryopump to control the density during puffing. Overall, the machine performed well in the afternoon with only 3 fizzles, 2 early disruptions, and 1 no power shot. Not bad for an LH run. Given the low densities (nl_04=3.5-4e19m^-2) we were flirting with the locked mode threshold for much of the day and needed to repeat several shots due to locked modes. An interesting phenomenon was observed during these locked modes in shots 6, 8, and 11. Despite very low line integrated density and upwards of 0.5MW of LH power, there were no signs of current drive on the loop voltage. HXR and ECE diagnostics still show significant signs of fast electrons during these shots, however. Sudden spikes followed by slow decays in the non-thermal ECE signal (similar to inverted sawteeth but not of the correct frequency) during the LH are seen as well. The coupling experiments at the core of this run had some very surprising results. The first surprising result was that the LH system was able to couple into low density (nl_04=3.5-4e19m^-2) upper null plasmas with outer gaps of up to 3.5cm and a grill position of 1.5mm behind the LH limiter. This was totally unexpected due to the experience from the 2007 campaign that showed a need for outer gaps of 0.5cm or less to obtain good coupling in low density plasmas. Edge densities of 4-5e17m^-3 as measured by the LH Langmuir probes are consistent with the observed reflection coefficients. NINJA puffing under these conditions did little to effect the edge density or the LH wave coupling, which was already reasonable (20-30% reflected power). The second result came as we moved the LH launcher further behind its limiter. After getting great coupling with large outer gaps at a 1.5mm distance from the launcher to the limiter, we moved the launcher back to 5mm. As expected, coupling without the NINJA at this position was poor (80-100% reflected power). As we increased the NINJA puff to 10psi and decreased the outer gap to 0.5cm, we found that coupling improved only slightly, despite increasing the density measured by the LH probes around twice the cutoff density of 2.6e17m^-3. Why exactly this is happening is unclear however this indicates that there may be a change in the density gradient which is causing the higher reflections. Due to lack of time, we were unable to manually move the launcher to an intermediate position of 3.5mm behind the limiter. This run clearly showed the importance of the future upgrade to a remote launcher position system. As a follow on to the results of this run, we will be conducting experiments on long distance LH coupling into ICRF heated upper null L-mode plasmas on 1080115. It is hoped that the large outer gap plasmas developed on this day will allow us to avoid the glowing seen on the LH antenna during ICRF operation with grill to limiter distances in the range 1.5-2.5mm. |

| There were a few problems today that cost some run time, but overall the machine ran pretty well. There were a few disruptions in flattop first with LHCD and then a couple late in the day early in the pulse before LHCD turned on. There were also a number of fizzles, sometimes due to the preceding disruption, but other times because the cryopump warmed up just before INIT so that the neutral pressure at breakdown was too high. Bill Parkin also noticed after shot 21 that one of the TF converters was not working properly and had not been working properly since last Friday. So, we had an hour delay to replace six fuses on the TF. Still, the main physics program of the run was achieved. See the session leader summary for the physics details. There were 30 shots, 26 plasmas, 3 fizzles, and one TF test shot. Of the plasma shots, there were three that disrupted before the LHCD pulse and one during the LHCD pulse. The startup was ugly for almost all shots today despite multiple changes in prepuff duration, Br0, EF4, and even RCUR offset. However, the startup was surprisingly robust to these changes except when the cryopump was too warm and led to very high neutral pressure at breakdown or there was a preceding disruption that led to high carbon level.

| Jan 9 2008 09:23:32:977AM | 1080109001 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at .787 due to an injection from the LH grill. Will retry on next shot.
Interesting spike in the nonthermal ECE right as LH is about to trip out. |
| Jan 9 2008 09:31:19:410AM | 1080109002 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Lots of nonthermal ECE, good .4V reduction in Vloop, lots of hard xrays. Coupling pretty noisy around 25-30% with edge density around 4-5e17 on mid and bottom probes. Density data from top probe looks missing/unreliable. nl_04 3.2-3.5e19.
Next shot will repeat with NINJA on at a 5psi puff from .55s to 1.25s. |
| Jan 9 2008 09:48:26:153AM | 1080109003 | Greg Wallace | One trip at 1.155s due to a small vacuum breakdown on the D row near column 20.
Otherwise the shot looked good and retried successfully. Density increase not obvious on the LH probes. Next shot will repeat without LH on to get a baseline with gas puff and no power. |
| Jan 9 2008 09:55:32:340AM | 1080109004 | Greg Wallace | Line averaged density looked same as for shot 3 but the edge density on the LH probes was higher by a factor of 2 with the LH turned off? Next shot will increase outer gap to 2.5cm and turn LH back on. |
| Jan 9 2008 10:10:33:443AM | 1080109005 | Greg Wallace | LH ran clean at larger outer gap with the NINJA on. Next shot will repeat but with NINJA off.
Coupling around 25% reflected power with edge density around 3-5e17 on mid and 2-4e17 on bottom. Top probe still doesn't look reliable. nl_04 slightly higher around 4.2-4.4e19. |
| Jan 9 2008 10:25:12:967AM | 1080109006 | Greg Wallace | Very interesting shot. Looks like we went into a locked mode which possibly killed any signs of current drive. We see a "sawtooth" nonthermal ECE signal and the loop voltage stays completely flat.
Despite the NINJA being off, lots of edge density. nl_04=3.7e19 and the mid probes at 1e18 and bottom probes at .6-1e18. LH coupling at 30% reflected power. Will repeat while trying to eliminate the locked mode. |
| Jan 9 2008 10:39:14:383AM | 1080109007 | Greg Wallace | No locked mode, lots of current drive. Coupling was quite good (25% reflected power) despite no NINJA puff. nl_04 dropping from 4.3 to 3.8e19. Grill density around 3-4e17.
Next shot will keep NINJA on but turn off the LH power. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:00:11:703AM | 1080109008 | Greg Wallace | nl_04 stayed steady around 3.9 to 4.2e19 with LH off and NINJA on. LH probes measured around 1e18 with no LH power.
Steve Wolfe reports a locked mode during this shot so that may be the source of the high edge density. Next shot will repeat (NINJA on, LH off) trying to eliminate the locked mode. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:07:42:497AM | 1080109009 | Greg Wallace | No locked mode on this shot but density was a bit higher ~4-4.5e19 on nl_04. Probe density a bit lower around 8e17 but still pretty high for this large outer gap with no LH power.
Next shot will move to 3.5cm outer gap with LH and NINJA on. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:22:26:180AM | 1080109010 | Greg Wallace | Cryo "burped" and was not working correctly on this shot. Will retry on the next shot with the cryo on to keep the density down.
Coupling did not look great at beginning of shot but improved by .8s as the line averaged density rose to nearly 5.4e19. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:41:02:233AM | 1080109011 | Greg Wallace | Another locked mode, again with no current drive. LH ran clean with so-so coupling. More "sawtooth" activity on the non-thermal ECE.
Will try again to see if we can make the locked mode go away. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:50:21:827AM | 1080109012 | Greg Wallace | No locked mode. Good signs of current drive with density factor of 2 lower than previous shot at the LH probes (~4e17). Coupling improved during shot as density increased from 4.5 to 5e19 on nl_04. Next shot will disable NINJA and keep LH on. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:10:46:067PM | 1080109013 | Greg Wallace | No NINJA on this shot with the LH turned on. Coupling was pretty good towards the end of the shot although the line averaged density decreased from .7 to 1.1s. Next shot will turn on NINJA and turn off LH. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:21:09:783PM | 1080109014 | Greg Wallace | Locked mode at .5s according to Steve Wolfe. This shot had NINJA but no LH. Will retry to eliminate the locked mode.
nl_04 between 3.8 and 4.2e19, mid and bottom probes between .5 and 1e18. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:32:56:683PM | 1080109015 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:40:32:697PM | 1080109016 | Greg Wallace | Shot ran well without locked mode. nl_04 steady around 4.8e19 and LH probes 4-5e17.
Next shot will be cryo off, NINJA off, LH on. |
| Jan 9 2008 01:23:31:167PM | 1080109017 | Greg Wallace | Shot ran well with no cryo and no NINJA. LH coupling pretty good despite falling line integrated density. nl_04 falling from 4.5 to 4e19 and LH probes between 3 and 4e17.
Cell access to move launcher to 5mm behind the LH limiter. Hopefully this will cause coupling to get worse without the NINJA??? Next shot will be a repeat of shot 1 with the grill moved farther back. |
| Jan 9 2008 01:46:25:297PM | 1080109018 | Greg Wallace | No feedback on the density control. Will repeat with TCI fixed.
LH could not couple without the NINJA on. Density is around 1-5e16 on the LH probes. |
| Jan 9 2008 01:58:46:370PM | 1080109019 | Greg Wallace | Another locked mode. Will repeat one more time to get a baseline before turning on NINJA. |
| Jan 9 2008 02:09:17:680PM | 1080109020 | Greg Wallace | This shot worked as requested. LH could not couple with the low edge density (<1e17 on LH probes) and nl_04 was steady around 4-4.2e19.
Scopes show LH launcher at 5.5mm behind the grill. Next shot will turn on NINJA and keep LH on. |
| Jan 9 2008 02:20:28:133PM | 1080109021 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at .4s. Will repeat. |
| Jan 9 2008 03:35:03:540PM | 1080109022 | Greg Wallace | Test shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 03:35:09:370PM | 1080109023 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle |
| Jan 9 2008 03:50:32:817PM | 1080109024 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at 0.31s. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:06:21:890PM | 1080109025 | Greg Wallace | LH was not able to couple with the NINJA on. No appreciable increase in density measured at the LH grill despite seeing the ionization on the LH camera. Density at the grill is 1.5-2e16 on top, 5-8e16 on mid, and .6-1.2e17 on bottom.
Next shot will increase puff to 10psi from 5psi. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:09:18:043PM | 1080109026 | Greg Wallace | Another early disruption. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:25:11:647PM | 1080109027 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:44:57:513PM | 1080109028 | Greg Wallace | Still no coupling during early part of pulse when LH was restriking. After restrikes ended density at the grill continued to rise. Next shot will move NINJA puff earlier.
NINJA puff will trigger at .35s on the next shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:58:38:213PM | 1080109029 | Greg Wallace | Still no coupling although the grill density is where it was this morning where we had good coupling (3-4e17). Next shot will decrease outer gap to 0.5cm. |
| Jan 9 2008 05:53:40:207PM | 1080109030 | Greg Wallace | Many trips mostly due to big spikes in reflection, maybe from breakdown in the region in front of the grill. Nothing on the LH camera looks like breakdown in a guide but there are bright lines across the grill along the field lines.
This is the only shot at 5mm behind the limiter where there was any coupling at all. Between trips the coupling was not good (~50% reflected power) although the density at the grill was ~5-6e17. This is actually greater than the density at which we had good coupling than with the 3.5cm outer gap (~4e17 for shot 17). |

| Jan 9 2008 09:14:14:853AM | 1080109001 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 1: Loaded shot 1071219032 and then reloaded segment 1 from shot 1080108022, which has prepuff ending at -0.4 s with a 35 ms long pulse for cryopump operation.
Note that the live segment is segment 3 for an upper null 0.8 MA, 5.4 T discharge. nl04 is programmed to 3.5 x 10^19 m^-2. NINJA is off for the first shot. Disrupted at 0.79 s during the LHCD. There are bright flashes on the LH grill just before the disruption indicating a plasma surface interaction with the grill that probably caused the disruption. The startup does not look very good either. |
| Jan 9 2008 09:27:30:100AM | 1080109002 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 2: Repeat. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 09:39:53:000AM | 1080109003 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 3: Repeat with NINJA puffing deuterium from 0.55 - 1.25 s. Runaways early.
Startup does not look good. Otherwise it was a good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 09:50:45:277AM | 1080109004 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 4: Increased prepuff by 5 ms to 40 ms duration. Repeat without LHCD to see the effect of the NINJA puff. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 10:03:35:477AM | 1080109005 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 5: Reduced Br0 by 0.5 mT to -0.0005 T. Reduced RCUR by 0.5 cm to increase the outer gap by 1 cm. LHCD turned back on. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 10:16:54:330AM | 1080109006 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 6: Reduced EF4 current from -1340 to -1325 A to raise Bz more positive at breakdown. Good shot. Breakdown has improved. |
| Jan 9 2008 10:33:50:323AM | 1080109007 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 7: Repeat. Breakdown is worse but the shot is good. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:43:09:657AM | 1080109008 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 8: Increased prepuff by 3 ms to 43 ms duration. Turned off LHCD. Good shot. Turned on argon puff at 50 ms duration. Startup is still bad. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:04:09:970AM | 1080109009 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 9: Try reducing the prepuff to 35 ms duration. Redo this shot to try to get it without the locked mode. Good shot. Startup is still bad. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:20:52:807AM | 1080109010 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 10: Increased EF4 current from -1325 to -1345 A. Decreased RCUR by 5 mm to get a 3.5 cm outer gap. Good shot. Startup is no better. Cryopump warmed up just before the shot so it was not pumping during the shot and the prepuff pressure was very high. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:28:49:850AM | 1080109011 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 11: Repeat with the cryopump cold. Good shot. Startup still looks bad. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:44:31:920AM | 1080109012 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 12: Increased RCUR offset in segment 1 from 1000 to 1500 to try to improve the startup. Increased Argon puff by 50 ms to 100 ms duration. Good shot. Startup still looks bad. |
| Jan 9 2008 11:59:34:307AM | 1080109013 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 13: Increased EF4 current by 10 A to -1355 A to reduce Bz at breakdown. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:12:43:443PM | 1080109014 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 14: Increased prepuff by 4 ms to 39 ms duration. Startup is still not looking very good. Disrupted in rampdown at about 1.67 s. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:26:54:000PM | 1080109015 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 15: Decreased prepuff to 33 ms duration. Cryopump warmed up just before the shot so the pressure was too high. Fizzle! |
| Jan 9 2008 12:38:27:400PM | 1080109016 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 16: Repeat with cryopump cold. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:53:07:490PM | 1080109017 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 17: Turned cryopump off. Reduced prepuff to 17 ms duration. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 12:53:48:083PM | 1080109017 | Joseph Snipes | Cell access to move the LH launcher back from -1.5 to -5 mm behind the LH limiter.
|
| Jan 9 2008 01:41:42:330PM | 1080109018 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 18: Cryopump back on. Increased prepuff to 38 ms duration taking into account an extra 5 ms because the DNB will be opening for the next shot and it pumps on the machine. Increased RCUR by 1 cm to reduce the outer gap to 1.5 cm. Good shot. TCI failed to provide density feedback but the density remained low. |
| Jan 9 2008 01:56:45:950PM | 1080109019 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 19: Repeat with density feedback. Good shot. Locked mode leading to disruptions in the rampdown ending at 1.79 s. |
| Jan 9 2008 02:11:56:583PM | 1080109020 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 20: Repeat without locked mode. Cryopump was warming up just before the shot but the shot went nonetheless amazingly. Indeed, the breakdown looks good at this high pressure 0.098 mTorr. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 02:21:27:177PM | 1080109021 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 21: Increased prepuff to 44 ms duration. NINJA puff on. Disrupted at 0.405 s. |
| Jan 9 2008 02:39:37:290PM | 1080109021 | Joseph Snipes | It seems 6 fuses have been blown on the TF since last Friday and Bill Parkin just noticed that one of the TF converters is not working properly. So, we are stopping to replace the fuses. It will mean about an hour delay at least. |
| Jan 9 2008 03:29:29:920PM | 1080109022 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 22: Test shot for TF. OK. |
| Jan 9 2008 03:31:19:590PM | 1080109023 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 23: Increased prepuff to 50 ms duration. Fizzle! |
| Jan 9 2008 04:29:25:240PM | 1080109024 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 24: Decreased prepuff to 45 ms duration. Increased EF4 current by 10 A to -1360 A. Disrupted at 0.31 s. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:29:36:333PM | 1080109025 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 25: Br0 changed by -2 mT on shot 23. Add 1 mT to make Br0 = +0.5 mT. Good shot. Startup looks good finally. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:30:04:147PM | 1080109026 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Raised NINJA pressure to 10 psi. LH has difficulty operating at -5 mm behind the limiter. Perhaps, more pressure will help. Disrupted at 0.41 s. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:32:00:050PM | 1080109027 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 27: Repeat without the disruption. Cryopump was apparently too warm as the neutral pressure was rather high around 0.09 mTorr. Fizzle! |
| Jan 9 2008 04:37:20:893PM | 1080109028 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 28: Repeat with plasma and without the disruption and with the cryopump cold. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 04:47:58:560PM | 1080109029 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 29: NINJA puff start time changed to 0.35 s so that the puff should enter the plasma around 0.5 s. Increased prepuff by 4 ms to 49 ms duration. Reduced Br0 offset to 0. Good shot. |
| Jan 9 2008 05:02:03:070PM | 1080109030 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 30: Increased RCUR by 4 mm to decrease the outer gap to about 0.5 cm. Decreased abs(EF4) current by 15 A to -1350 A. Good shot. |
