MP#489 "Damping rate of TAEs near stability threshold with ICRF fast ions" Goal **** Observe the stability of moderate n (~6-14) TAEs as the ICRF power is increased from shot to shot. Confirm effect of energetic tail profile on TAE stability. Run Preparation *************** * Prepare argon for HIREX * Setup GPC2 gratings for -5.9 T * Set CNPA aperture to 208, bias voltage to 45V * Operate DNB during interval: * Operate Thomson * Observe CXRS for core boron density measurements * Operate PCI if available * Enable the dpcs_ftae2 procedure in DPCS * Turn on Active MHD and set qAE to 1.5, AE_order to 2 Plasma Conditions ***************** * load equilibrium from 1080109025 * this shot is L-mode, upper single null * change outer gap to 8mm * change to Bt=-5.9T * change to nl04=7e19 * change to Ip=-600MA * leave argon puffing for HYREX Shot Sequence ************* Increment RF power by 0.5MW, starting at 0MW. At each power, excite the upper Active MHD antenna first at the q=1.5 frequency, then in a second shot at the q=1 frequency. If unstable TAEs are observed at higher RF powers, repeat shot to attempt to reproduce the mode. Continue incrementing by 0.5MW to highest RF power that can be achieved, even if H-mode is encountered. If RF power scan is completed, return to moderate power (eg 2MW). Execute a series of shots at -5.9T, -5.7T, -5.4T and -5.1T, to look for the radial distribution of the ion tail with the CNPA as a benchmark for modeling codes. |

| This was a very successful scan to high RF powers to hunt for the TAE stability threshold. L mode was maintained in these USN configurations above the usual H mode threshold by injecting large amounts of argon to increase radiated power. Unstable TAEs were observed at RF powers above 3.5MW. The ICRF functioned brilliantly and powers up to 5.5MW for 0.5s were achieved.
Other diagnostics also contributed to a successful run. All three channels of the cnpa were operational, giving a spatial and energy distribution of the energetic particles at each RF power level. The neutral beam worked most of the time which will improve the number of particle counts and the resolution. The PCI was up for the first day this campaign and observed both unstable modes and the Active MHD perturbation in some cases. | Run summary for Thursday 10 Jan 2008 MP#489 Damping of TAEs at the threshold of stability in the presence of ICRF-heated fast ions Session leader: J. Sears Physics operator: R. Granetz Plasma operation was pretty reliable today. We ran upper null, low current (0.6 MA) discharges at 5.9 tesla today, and got the ICRF power up to 5.5 MW for 0.4 s, and 4.5+ MW for 1 second. Shot 22 had a total of 4.4 MJ of ICRF energy injected, which may be a new record for C-Mod. At these high powers, even the upper null plasmas were going into H-mode, so we effectively avoided this during the latter part of the run by puffing very large amounts of argon, in conjunction with running the cryopump. This was very effective and kept the plasma from disrupting for the most part. For most of the day we had only a 5 mm outer gap, to aid the Mirnov pickup signals. However, at the 5.5 MW level this resulted in overheating of something (G/H limiter?) on shots 26 and 27. We then increased the outer gap to 10 mm for the remainder of the run, and decreased the RF power. There were two shots which failed because the EF3 breaker pulled out before the shot, and we also had one shot that blew a TF fuse (1080110011). See the session leader's run summary for results on the TAE measurements. Scorecard: 24 plasmas 2 duds 5 fizzles 0 power supply tests 1 no-power MDS shot cycles -------------- Total: 32 shot cycles |

| Jan 10 2008 09:06:47:803AM | 1080110001 | Robert Granetz | Shot 01 -- Fizzle. Pre-fill pressure was 0.12 mTorr. Pre-fill pulse was 45 ms! I grabbed this startup from yesterday...don't know why the pre-fill pulse was so long. DNB is firing into the plasma, but it doesn't need this much extra pre-fill. Next shot: set pre-fill pulse to 28 ms. |
| Jan 10 2008 09:26:23:250AM | 1080110001 | Robert Granetz | Steve Wukitch reminded me that yesterday the cryopump was being used, which explains the long pre-fill pulse. |
| Jan 10 2008 09:23:36:420AM | 1080110002 | Robert Granetz | Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.6 MA, 5.9 T, upper null, nl_04=6.6e19 m-2. Outer gap = 8-9 mm. RF faulted a lot. Next shot: turn on argon; decrease outer gap to 4 mm (increase RCUR by 2 mm); retry for better RF. |
| Jan 10 2008 09:43:18:740AM | 1080110003 | Robert Granetz | Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Outer gap varies from 6 mm down to 4 mm during the flattop. Got good 0.5 MW pulse from D-port. Video cameras don't show any overheating of D or J antenna edges. Next shot: Tweak RCUR programming to get a more constant 4 mm outer gap. |
| Jan 10 2008 09:54:11:253AM | 1080110004 | Robert Granetz | Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1 MW. (We're stepping up the ICRF power by 0.5 MW on a shot-to-shot basis for this MP.) Outer gap is now very constant, but for some reason it's shrunk to just 2 mm. Next shot: increase outer gap to 4 mm (move RCUR in by 1 mm). Try for 1.5 MW ICRF power. |
| Jan 10 2008 10:02:55:907AM | 1080110005 | Robert Granetz | Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.5 MW (as requested). Outer gap jumped to 6 mm, not 4. Next shot: Another RCUR tweak. Prf=2 MW. |
| Jan 10 2008 10:24:35:710AM | 1080110006 | Robert Granetz | Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2 MW (as requested). Outer gap = 4-5 mm except early in the flattop. I don't think I can control it better than this. Next shot: no DPCS changes. Prf=2.5 MW |
| Jan 10 2008 10:36:30:097AM | 1080110007 | Robert Granetz | Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.44 MW, as requested. Still no overheating seen on the D and J video views. Next shot: no DPCS changes. Prf will stay at 2.5 MW. |
| Jan 10 2008 10:52:40:653AM | 1080110008 | Robert Granetz | Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.5 MW. Outer gap = 4 mm. H/(H+D) is saying 2-3%. Next shot: no DPCS changes. Prf staying at 2.5 MW. |
| Jan 10 2008 11:00:09:650AM | 1080110009 | Robert Granetz | Shot 09 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 3 ms. |
| Jan 10 2008 11:16:22:567AM | 1080110010 | Robert Granetz | Shot 10 -- Fizzle. This one also should have gone. Next shot: add -0.2 mT to Br0; add 1 ms to pre-fill. |
| Jan 10 2008 11:35:26:340AM | 1080110011 | Robert Granetz | Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good startup. Prf=2.5 MW. There was a ""glitch"" in TF converter #1 which will require a power room access. Next shot: no DPCS changes. |
| Jan 10 2008 12:00:35:753PM | 1080110011 | Robert Granetz | There was a long break between shots 11 and 12 to replace a fuse in the TF cabinet and high-pot it. |
| Jan 10 2008 12:16:05:463PM | 1080110013 | Robert Granetz | Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. D-port failed though. Lithium pellet was injected at t=1.45 s. Next shot: no DPCS changes. |
| Jan 10 2008 12:23:45:273PM | 1080110013 | Robert Granetz | Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2 MW, as requested. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Jan 10 2008 12:38:02:253PM | 1080110014 | Robert Granetz | Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.4 MW, as requested. Li pellet at 1.45 s. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Jan 10 2008 12:54:41:823PM | 1080110015 | Robert Granetz | Shot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=0.5 MW. The DANT camera caught the lithium pellet streaking into the plasma (frame 43). Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Jan 10 2008 01:14:45:880PM | 1080110017 | Robert Granetz | Shot 17 -- Fizzle. Everything looks fine. Next shot: reduce Br0 by another 0.2 mT (to 0.0000 T) |
| Jan 10 2008 02:30:00:913PM | 1080110017 | Robert Granetz | Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3 MW, as requested. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Jan 10 2008 01:38:15:777PM | 1080110018 | Robert Granetz | Shot 18 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.93 s. Prf=3.5 MW, which caused this upper null plasma to go into H-mode. It looks like an injection killed the plasma. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Jan 10 2008 02:08:47:843PM | 1080110019 | Robert Granetz | Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. 3.5 MW, long pulse. H/(H+D)=4-5%. Cell access granted for various people Next shot: increase argon puff to 0.5 s (t=0.3 to 0.8 s) and turn on cryopump. This is to try and keep us out of H-mode. |
| Jan 10 2008 02:21:22:540PM | 1080110020 | Robert Granetz | Shot 20 -- Dud. I forgot to increase the pre-fill to compensate for turning on the cryopump. Next shot: increase pre-fill by 15 ms. |
| Jan 10 2008 02:43:37:627PM | 1080110021 | Robert Granetz | Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=4+ MW, long pulse. The argon kept us in L-mode, as desired. The cryopump kept the argon from killing the shot. Trophy shot. H/(H+D) = 5% Next shot: increase argon puff duration to 1.0 s (t=0.3 to 1.3 s). Cryopump on again. Prf=4+ MW again. Also add 2 more ms to pre-fill. |
| Jan 10 2008 02:53:47:950PM | 1080110022 | Robert Granetz | Shot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=4.5+ MW for 1.0 s. Total RF energy = 4.4 MJ (a record?). Stayed in L-mode due to massive argon puff; Cryopump kept the argon from disrupting the plasma. Next shot: repeat same shot. Cryopump on, Prf=4.5+ MW, argon puff = 1.0 s. |
| Jan 10 2008 02:59:39:387PM | 1080110023 | Robert Granetz | Shot 23 -- Dud. EF3 failed. Breaker pulled just before the shot. Next shot: try again |
| Jan 10 2008 03:21:20:877PM | 1080110024 | Robert Granetz | Shot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. D-port antenna faulted out. Prf=2.5 MW. Next shot: try again with all antennas |
| Jan 10 2008 03:36:13:170PM | 1080110025 | Robert Granetz | Shot 25 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=4.1 MW for 1+ s. H/(H+D)=6% Next shot: more RF power (5+ MW) |
| Jan 10 2008 03:45:04:290PM | 1080110026 | Robert Granetz | Shot 26 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.83 s. Prf=5.5+ MW. Next shot: increase the argon plenum pressure to 2 psi (from 1 psi). Keep the pulse length at 1.0 s. |
| Jan 10 2008 04:01:05:393PM | 1080110027 | Robert Granetz | Power room access was needed after shot 27 to look again at TF converter cabinet #1. We may have blown another fuse. |
| Jan 10 2008 04:09:42:000PM | 1080110027 | Robert Granetz | Shot 27 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.91 s. Prf=5.5 MW for 0.4 s !!! Something's getting hot on the outer wall near G/H; probably the G/H limiter. Outer gap is 5 mm. Next shot: increase outer gap to 1.0 cm (decrease RCUR by 2.5 mm). Also move the outboard strikepoint in by 5 mm to get it inboard of the slots in ceiling. (Move RXU in by 5 mm.) |
| Jan 10 2008 04:16:59:467PM | 1080110028 | Robert Granetz | Shot 28 -- Fizzle. Fill pressure was somewhat higher, but not by a big factor, so I think the cryopump still has helium in it. Next shot: decrease pre-fill by 4 ms |
| Jan 10 2008 04:32:19:850PM | 1080110029 | Robert Granetz | Shot 29 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.42 s. Prf=4.5 MW for 0.9 s. Next shot: turn off cryopump and decrease pre-fill to 26 ms to compensate. Also reduce argon plenum pressure back to 1 psi and reduce the argon puff back to 100 ms. |
| Jan 10 2008 04:40:53:957PM | 1080110030 | Robert Granetz | Shot 30 -- No-power shot because the EF3 breaker pulled out in CHECK state. Next shot: try again. The RF power will be 3 MW. |
| Jan 10 2008 04:57:46:433PM | 1080110031 | Robert Granetz | Shot 31 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3 MW, as requested. Next shot: Set Btor = 5.1 tesla. |
| Jan 10 2008 05:07:55:307PM | 1080110032 | Robert Granetz | Shot 32 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3 MW, as requested. This shot had lots of short H-modes because the massive argon puffing is no longer being done (just the usual 100 ms puff). Btor=5.1 tesla. End of run. |
