| Session leader plan for 1080115
Session leader: G. Wallace Physics operator: J. Irby MP 473: Lower Hybrid System Check-out and Initial operation The purpose of this run will be to isolate the damage by ICRF on the LH launcher and to find conditions under which we can operate both systems without causing harm to either. Plasma setup: Overnight ECDC. Starting shot will be 1080109002. No NINJA at first. LH setup: 2.5mm behind limiter, 90deg current drive phasing, 85kW per klystron at 40kV beam voltage, firing from t=.7 to 1.3s. Be prepared to set launcher to 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5mm during the run. These values have been calculated and written on the sheet in the cell. (very rough) Shot plan: 1) Repeat of shot 1080109002, i.e. no NINJA, no ICRF, upper null, 1.5cm outer gap, and ~500kW LH power. The launcher will be at 2.5mm behind limiter vs 1.5mm behind limiter, though. 2) Same plasma as shot 1. Turn off LH and run 2MW on J from 0.7 to 0.9s, 1MW on E from 0.9 to 1.1s, and 1MW on D from 1.1 to 1.3s. Look to see when/if glowing appears on LH launcher. 3) Repeat shot 2 but add LH from 0.7 to 1.3s at 85kW per klystron. 4) If glowing is visible on shots 2-3, turn on ICRF antenna which causes strongest glow from 1.0 to 1.3s at 1-2MW. Keep LH on from 0.7 to 1.3s. Increase outer gap to 2.5cm. or Start stacking antennas and raising power until glowing starts. 5) If glow is still visible, increase outer gap to 3.5cm. or If coupling is degraded due to increased outer gap/ICRF, add 5psi NINJA puff from 0.55 to 1.15s. 6) If increasing outer gap works, turn up RF and LH power until we see glowing again. As glowing comes back try increasing outer gap again. 7) If increasing outer gap does not make the glowing go away, move launcher to 3.5mm behind the limiter. 8) Repeat steps 1-7 (roughly) in lower null. Start with equilibrium from 1071219015 but program density to 4e19 (or as low as possible). Decrease J to 1.5MW if we are going into H-mode. |

| Session Leader Summary for 1080115:
The day started out slowly with some computer problems and a leak in the alternator air valve. First plasma shot was at 10:45. All shots on this day were with the LH launcher at 2.5mm behind the LH limiter. Similar shots on 1080109 were conducted at a 1.5mm launcher position. Compared to these earlier shots coupling was quite poor despite similar (~4e17 m^-3) densities on the LH probes. (Compare 1080115002 to 1080109002) After establishing a coupling baseline, it was determined that the D-port ICRF antenna was indeed causing the glowing problems seen on the LH grill. Unfortunately the LH camera view had shifted since the week before and the worst spot of the glowing was not visible with that camera. The WIDE2 camera did have a view of the entire grill, although not with high enough resolution to tell exactly where the glowing was coming from. Many injections were observed coming from the LH antenna on several shots (10, 12, 13, 16, 18, 22), some causing disruptions (10, 22). These injections seem to be very well correlated with power from the D antenna, even with outer gaps of ~2.5cm. Operation later in the day with 2MW from J-port proved successful. The coupling of the LH system was noticably worse with the ICRF on, but still tolerable (few trips). Tests with the NINJA system on did not show any clear improvement in coupling with or without ICRF. This seems to be the final nail in the coffin for the NINJA LH capillaries. |

| The first 1.5 hours of the run were spent getting the data system going
and verifying that the alternator/power room air switch was okay. We lost a little more time checking that the TF supplies were sharing properly. Machine generally ran well. We had some fizzles that are correlated with large impurity levels on the RGA. Problems began around shot 16, after which the impurities remained high until I stopped toggling the gatevalves. Levels then trended down shot to shot. Somewhat surprising. Shot 16 was the first shot with ninja at 10 psi; it had a late MARFE and large density rise from the puff. Following this shot we had the large impurity levels, with a fizzle on shot 17. On several shots today we blew off some metal from the lower hybrid probe support rail shimstock. Cu was seen by Matt. I assume there will be more detail in the SL summary. Suggest we add some color to PCS to highlight which segments are active. Some lesser physops program the wrong segment on occasion. test 01 dud fizzle 11,17,19,21,23 plasma 02,03,04,05,06,07,08,10,12,13, 14,15,16,18,20,22,24,25,26,27, 28 disruption 05,10,18,22 |

| Jan 15 2008 08:57:02:313AM | 1080115001 | Greg Wallace | No power shot. |
| Jan 15 2008 10:44:41:610AM | 1080115002 | Greg Wallace | Poor coupling despite edge densities around 4e17 on the LH probes. Only difference between this shot and 1080109002 is that the grill is now 2.5mm vs 1.5mm behind the limiter, and yet the measured edge densities are nearly identical. Will repeat with nl_04=5e19. |
| Jan 15 2008 10:58:54:533AM | 1080115003 | Greg Wallace | LH system was able to couple when nl_04 >3.8e19. Next shot will increase density a bit more so we will hopefully get a clean LH shot. |
| Jan 15 2008 11:21:49:470AM | 1080115004 | Greg Wallace | Yet again, density was too low, below 4e19. Will try increasing the density one more time.
Sudden jump/drop in many jungle gym channels at 1.2s. Not sure what to make of that although it seems to make a big difference in reflections. Maybe phasing was off? LH camera view has shifted since 1080109. Normal bright spot is now not on the camera view. |
| Jan 15 2008 11:33:20:133AM | 1080115005 | Greg Wallace | LH ran well until disruption. Will keep this plasma for the next few shots. Next shot will turn on ICRF and turn off LH.
Glowing in the normal place is visible on this shot, and gets brighter right before the disruption. Some afterglow is visible. |
| Jan 15 2008 11:48:04:457AM | 1080115006 | Greg Wallace | No LH on this shot. J did not work due to mismatch. The normal spot did glow from ~1.15-1.3s, indicating that D is the problem, as expected. Will repeat with an attempt to improve the matching on J. Need more ferrits! |
| Jan 15 2008 11:59:50:390AM | 1080115007 | Greg Wallace | J-port worked well at 2MW on this shot. No glowing with J or E, D still shows some glow but not as obvious as previous shot. Unfortunately the shifted camera view is cutting off the left half of the bottom rows, which is where we need to see the most.
Next shot will add in LH. |
| Jan 16 2008 04:41:25:893PM | 1080115008 | Greg Wallace | LH but no J. Next shot will repeat. |
| Jan 15 2008 12:45:16:210PM | 1080115009 | Greg Wallace | Still some glowing during D port. Next shot will be just D from .9 to 1.3 seconds with LH on. |
| Jan 15 2008 12:44:30:913PM | 1080115010 | Greg Wallace | Disruption caused by injection from LH grill at 1.22s. There is some glowing on the Langmuir probes, followed by a very bright spot and a disruption. Next shot will increase outer gap to 2.0cm.
Matt reports seeing copper. Looks like this might have been the shim stock. |
| Jan 15 2008 12:51:51:107PM | 1080115011 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jan 17 2008 11:35:32:887AM | 1080115012 | Greg Wallace | LH could not run with the ICRF with the bigger outer gap. No glowing on the LH launcher during LH part of pulse. nl_04=5-5.5e19.
Injection from the LH launcher at 1.4s during post LH ICRF pulse. This is 2MW from J and 1MW from E. Next shot will add 5psi NINJA from 0.85 to 1.15s. |
| Jan 15 2008 01:42:30:633PM | 1080115013 | Greg Wallace | Big glowing hunk of metal jumps off the LH grill at 1.15s. Unfortunately this is only visible on WIDE2 camera view. Looks like it came from the normal area, but we can't tell if it's the probe or the
Next shot will shorten LH pulse so it ends at 1.1s. Also increase outer gap to 2.5cm and ramp ICRF from 200kW to 1MW. |
| Jan 15 2008 01:52:10:443PM | 1080115014 | Greg Wallace | NINJA puff hit around 1.0s. Will move forward 200ms for next shot.
No glowing on cameras, but LH coupling still bad with ICRF on. Will cross fingers and hope that the earlier gas puff (starting while LH is actually on) helps. Ramped ICRF shows that minimum available power from D (200kW) is enough to trip out the LH system. |
| Jan 15 2008 02:14:48:190PM | 1080115015 | Greg Wallace | Able to couple up to ~400kW from D with the NINJA on at 5psi. Next shot will increase to 10psi. Doesn't seem to be much glowing visible with 2.5cm outer gap. |
| Jan 15 2008 02:40:59:157PM | 1080115016 | Greg Wallace | Injection from LH grill at .98s and 1.07s. Visible flashing and molten metal on the WIDE2 camera. Not much to see on the LH camera.
LH was able to couple, with exception of one trip caused by explosion from the launcher, through to the end of it's programmed pulse. Keep the conditions the same. |
| Jan 15 2008 02:39:15:873PM | 1080115017 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jan 15 2008 02:59:07:113PM | 1080115018 | Greg Wallace | More injections from the LH grill. No disruption but some sparks coming off still.
Disrupted at 1.6s but not due to anything from LH. LH reflection coeff is modulated with the sparks seen. Next shot will turn off LH but keep ICRF the same. |
| Jan 15 2008 02:56:38:923PM | 1080115019 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jan 15 2008 03:14:28:757PM | 1080115020 | Greg Wallace | All quiet on the western front.
No arcing, sparking, or anything else besides the NINJA glow. Next shot will turn off ICRF and turn on LHRF. |
| Jan 15 2008 03:24:08:300PM | 1080115021 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jan 15 2008 03:48:00:250PM | 1080115022 | Greg Wallace | Another disruption, might have been caused by LH sparking but not clear on this shot. This shot had no ICRF but still problems with the launcher glowing and arcing. Next shot will turn off both LH and ICRF. |
| Jan 15 2008 03:50:02:157PM | 1080115023 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jan 15 2008 04:15:14:640PM | 1080115024 | Greg Wallace | Everything ran smoothly on this one.
Next shot will turn off NINJA, turn on LH from .7 to 1.1, and turn on D from .9 to 1.3s. |
| Jan 15 2008 04:23:04:273PM | 1080115025 | Greg Wallace | Next shot will turn on J at 2MW and turn off E. Also extend LH pulse to 1.3s.
No glowing or sparking on the LH launcher from E+LH. |
| Jan 15 2008 04:38:44:760PM | 1080115026 | Greg Wallace | LH seems happy with J port. Good strong signs of current drive despite higher density. Next shot will change timing of the LH and ICRF systems.
J at 2MW from .6 to 1.4s. LH at 400kW from .8 to 1.2s. |
| Jan 15 2008 04:53:17:620PM | 1080115027 | Greg Wallace | LH and ICRF ran well other than disruption. Didn't seem to be coming from the LH grill. Next shot will stay the same but decrease outer gap to 1.5cm. |
| Jan 15 2008 05:12:55:050PM | 1080115028 | Greg Wallace | High reflections tripped out LH. Maybe reducing the outer gap hurt things??? Density was a bit lower than previous shot although edge density was higher.
Last shot of the day. |
