| MP 459a: VUV Spectrometer Calibration Using Krypton
Ok run day. We had problems with RF the first half of the morning. E was having problems matching so we had to rely heavily on J, while D was fine. Drops in the RF were leading to disruptions but we still got useful data from most shots. The primary goal of the run was to collect McPherson spectra from plasmas where krypton dominated the radiated power. We were able to collect the data for the Na/Mg-like lines but did not have enough RF to reach the Te necessary for Li/Be-like lines. We demonstrated the ability of the cryopump to maintain a steady state krypton puff, which is great news. For nl04=1.0e20, RF=4.0 MW the plenum pressure was 1.2 psi with a puff from 0.3 to 1.3 seconds. We saw some lines on HIREXSR, but the signal levels were very low and the wavelengths did not match anything from list of known lines. This indicates that they will probably not be useful for quantitative transport analysis. We were unable to see any clear Kr charge exchange using the beam, but the beam was in very poor shape (low current) so I'd like to try this again at some point. We didn't get to the spatial scan of the McPherson due to a lack of time. |

| MP 520: Sawtooth Evolution Studies
The locked mode portion of the experiment was successful. Two steady locked mode discharges were obtained (Shots 16 & 20) with sufficient argon levels to provide a good wavelength calibration for Hirex-Sr. The intra-sawtooth profile measurement portion of the run was partially successful. Due to a problem with J port we are unable to use RF phasing techniques to generate monster sawtooth oscillations. We did, however, take data at the maximum Hirex-sr frame rate (200Hz) on 3 discharges (21, 24 & 25) with moderate sawtooth oscillation periods. The â??tooth-to-toothâ?? repeatability was quite good during the flattop portions of these discharges and so it should be possible to â??addâ?? sawtooth oscillations together to improve the quality of the data. There are clear indications of sawtooth modulation on emissivity and ion temperature during these discharges but, inexplicably, the rotation signal seems to be oscillating at a frequency other that the sawtooth frequency. |

| The discharges today were near 1 MA plasma current, 5.4 T field, and ICRF heating in excess of 1 MW.
There were copious quantities of puffed impurities, argon and krypton The cryopump was used on essentially every shot. It was necessary to assure that it actually achieved and held low pressure before each shot. There were examples of burps which in some cases rose as high as the 10**-4 range. We made significant progress on two miniproposals today. MP459A VUV Spectrometer Calib. w/Krypton and MP520 Sawtooth evolution studies. For MP454A, krypton was puffed into the discharge with ICRF heating. The krypton puff was balanced against cryopumping to maintain a constant, high level. ICRF heating prevented radiative collapse of the discharge. After completion of the first MP, there was a break of approximately an hour to work on ICRF. For MP520, argon was puffed into discharges with a locked mode and discharges selected for large amplitude sawteeth. See SL report for details. Both discharges were easy to simply "dial-up" Score card 22 plasmas (001,002,003,005,006,007,008,009,010,011,012, 013,014,015,016,017,018,019,020,021,024,025) 06 fizzles (004,022,023,026,027,028) ----------- 28 total |

| Jan 16 2008 09:56:34:863AM | 1080116003 | Matt Reinke | Good shot. Have evidence of the Kr being pumped by the cyro from the Na-like in on the McPherson. RF = 1.0 MW.
Next: Repeat and try to bring up RF. |
| Jan 16 2008 10:21:36:017AM | 1080116005 | Matt Reinke | RF is getting there. Kr still showing pumping. Need steady RF before pressure can be increased.

| Jan 16 2008 10:53:15:583AM | 1080116007 | Matt Reinke | Good shot, got SS radiative L-mode. Peak Te is about 3.5. Need to increase to get more Li/Be-like.
Next: RF to 4.0 MW, after that increase the plenum pressure to 1.1 psi |
| Jan 16 2008 11:01:19:673AM | 1080116008 | Matt Reinke | Got H-modes again with RF at 4.0 MW. Increasing plenum pressure
Next: same RF, plenum pressure at 1.2 psi |
| Jan 16 2008 11:29:05:767AM | 1080116009 | Matt Reinke | Good shot. ICRF limited by E-Port not being able to tune to this shot. Could bypass with a cell access, but I'm getting a large amount of Kr in, so I'll use this discharge for the spectral scan.
Next: Repeat but McPherson moved from 240 to 205 angstroms. |
| Jan 16 2008 11:46:07:193AM | 1080116010 | Matt Reinke | Early disruption, but got some SS section. Will move on in spectra and come back if time.
Next: Repeat shot WL = 185 angstroms. |
| Jan 16 2008 12:01:44:960PM | 1080116011 | Matt Reinke | Early disruption again caused by lack of RF power. Steve says J is arcing. Reduce demand to try and get clean RF.
Next: RF to 3.5 MW, move to 160 angstroms. |
| Jan 16 2008 12:15:03:447PM | 1080116012 | Matt Reinke | Good shot. See both Mg and Na like lines. No evidence of significant Li and Be like, but that's not suprising since Te is only ~3.5 keV.
Next: Repeat, move to 170 angstroms to better center lines. |
| Jan 16 2008 12:28:42:133PM | 1080116013 | Matt Reinke | Early disruption, no SS level.
Repeat shot: |
| Jan 16 2008 12:50:11:533PM | 1080116014 | Matt Reinke | Good shot. Steve says we cooked something on J and it's a long time to repair. Try with D & E at 3 MW.
Next RF=3.0 MW with WL = 145.0 Ang. Then I'm done. Steve says a 1 hour power room access to fix J which is necessary for 2nd half of run day. |
| Jan 16 2008 01:01:12:933PM | 1080116015 | Matt Reinke | Good shot, disruption halfway through. I'm done with this run. |
| Jan 16 2008 02:38:11:003PM | 1080116016 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Good locked mode starting at 0.8s. Argon puff at 200ms. Argon levels are good. No sign of Kr from the previous shots. Increase Ar puff to 300ms for the next discharge. |
| Jan 16 2008 06:04:30:677PM | 1080116020 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Good locked mode shot. Central rotation seems to go to zero in two discrete steps. We are now finished with the locked mode portion of the MP and will move on to sawtooth studies.
|
| Jan 16 2008 06:37:47:090PM | 1080116021 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Try to re-run shot 15 using Ar instead of Kr. The Hirex-Sr frame rate was reduced to 5ms to make multiple measurements per sawtooth oscillation. Ar signal levels should be sufficient for profile inversions. Sawtooth period of 16-20ms. |
| Jan 16 2008 06:40:05:403PM | 1080116024 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Ar Signal levels similar to shot 24. Sawtooth periods ~18-20ms. |
| Jan 16 2008 06:42:54:017PM | 1080116025 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current increased to 1.2MA. Ar Signal level is still good. Sawtooth periods seem to have shortened ~15ms. |
