Session Leader plan for 1071219
SL: G. Wallace
PO: J. Irby

This run will be another attempt at MP473 (LH Checkout and Conditioning). The
gameplan is to start with ~500kW, bringing up the power level to near 1MW.

LH system setup: Phase shifters at 90 degrees current drive direction, 1.5mm
behind LH limiter. Start at 40kV beam voltage. 500ms shot starting at 800ms.

Plasma setup: Start with 1071207027. Overnight ECDC. Cryopump in afternoon.

Shot Plan:
Start with 500ms pulse at 80kW per klystron. Increase power each shot in
20kW/klystron incriments up to maximum available without arcing. After an arc,
reduce power by 25% then continue raising in 10kW incriments. Cryopump and upper
null may be required for density control if plasma density rises during LH
pulse. Watch closely both for arcing in the Jungle Gym and injections coming
from between the C and D rows of the launcher.

If glowing or injections are seen from the LH launcher, first try increasing
outer gap from nominal value of ~1cm. If this fails to help, increase limiter
to launcher distance from 1.5 to 2.5 or 3.5mm.

If injections don't seem to be a problem, try pushing launcher in closer to the
plasma (1.0mm, 0.5mm, 0.0mm).

Session Leader summary for 1080123

Session Leader: G. Wallace
Physics Operator: J. Jirby

This run day was for MP473, LH checkout and conditioning. The purpose of this
run was to operate the LH system at high power with the launcher pushed closer
to the LH limiter.

An attempt was made early in the day to use the new remote launcher positioning
system to move the launcher, however this proved unsuccessful to problems not
encountered during bench tests. Getting this system up and running soon will be
a major improvement to the LH program since several cell accesses were needed to
move the launcher on this day, causing significant delays.

The HXR system was not operating correctly on this day. Two attempts were made
to fix the problem while moving the launcher but no cause was found. From the
signals seen during shots (bit noise only on all channels) it appears that the 5
or 12 Volt drive for the shapers and amplifiers may not be operating properly.

Despite this, we were able to steadily increase power throughout most of the
day. Reflection coefficients decreased after moving the launcher from an
initial position of 1.5mm behind the LH limiter to 1mm, 0.5mm, and finally flush
with the LH limiter. Despite moving the launcher in towards the plasma and
increasing the LH power level, the usual glowing and injections from the spacer
between the C and D rows of the antenna were largely absent.

Several arcs in the Jungle Gym were observed while bringing up the power. These
arcs appeared in columns 3 and 15 at between 140 and 160kW per klystron
(800-900+kW net). Despite the occasional arcing, we were able to sustain 875kW
net power without arcing on shot 25, and several shots at slightly over 800kW
net.

In comparing these high power shots to trophy shots from '06 (1060728011 and
014), it should be noted that we are now operating at n||=2.3 instead of 1.5,
which may account for the fact that we did not achieve greater than ~0.4V
reduction in Vloop on this day. Had we changed the phasing of the antenna at
this power level we should have seen comparable current driven.

Also, we are currently operating without klystron 1, such that we are now 1/2
klystron short in source power (column 1 being fed into a dummy load) as
compared to '06. Given this, the klystron power we operated at on shot 25
(150kW per klystron on 11 tubes) is the highest sustained power per klystron on
any plasma shot to date.

Machine ran extremely well today. 100% startup and only one disruption caused by a pellet on the last shot (31). No field tweaks were required. Gas was adjusted +- a few ms to help control the runaways, though it is of course never clear that the PO is in control. We were able to run low densities (4e19/m^2 nl04) fairly reliably after the first few shots of the day depleted the walls somewhat.

Primary PCS changes today were to the outer gap as we looked for the best LH coupling. RX_L was also moved out about 10 mm in an attempt to improve coupling to the lower grill.

LH coupled power approached 900 kW for a while, but faults in the jungle gym got progressively worse after one very nice high power show w/o any trips.

RGA-1 indicated a growing nitrogen leak between shots 23 and 26 that was probably cooling induced. Went away remainder of run.

Engineering systems had no problems today. Data system ran well.

Session Leader Comments
Jan 23 2008 09:30:13:377AM1080123001Greg WallaceTwo trips late in shot due to high reflections on 13B coupler. Also HXR has only bit noise. Will repeat for next shot.
Jan 23 2008 10:11:19:750AM1080123002Greg WallaceCoupling not great but no trips. 13B reflections still high but not enough to cause a problem.

~0.1V reduction in Vloop, density fairly steady around 5.5e19 on nl_04. Density lowest on bottom probes, ~5e17. Next shot will turn on remote positioning system and move launcher to 1mm behind limiter.

Also reset HV and LV on HXR system and checked cable connections.
Jan 23 2008 10:29:06:980AM1080123003Greg WallaceLauncher moved from 1.6mm to 1.3mm behind limiter. Reflections still around 30%.

Density still a bit low on the bottom of the grill, around 5e17. Some residual glowing on the junction between the D row and the spacer on the B side.

Next shot will move launcher in to 1610(0.5mm behind limiter?). Also increasing outer gap a bit late in the shot to help with the glowing.
Jan 23 2008 10:40:08:293AM1080123004Greg WallaceReflections came down to ~25%. The glowing is a little more intense, especially early in the shot. Next shot will increase outer gap by 0.5cm across the board.

~0.15V reduction in Vloop.
Jan 23 2008 10:59:26:240AM1080123005Greg WallaceMany trips. Reflections seem particularly noisy. 13B still seems to be the one that causes all the trips.

We're going to try using the NINJA system at 5psi firing from 0.6 to 1.1s to see if it helps with coupling at the larger outer gap.
Jan 23 2008 11:18:14:150AM1080123006Greg WallaceLine integrated density a little higher, ~7e19. No trips with the NINJA system on. Next shot will try to lower nl_04 and also turn off B side capillary.
Jan 23 2008 11:29:20:210AM1080123007Greg WallaceMany trips. Poor coupling on top of launcher although 13B seems to be causing the trips. Next shot will increase NINJA puff to 10psi and keep everything else the same.
Jan 23 2008 11:51:36:160AM1080123008Greg WallaceA few trips, but much better than last shot. nl_04 rises from 4 to 6.5e19 during NINJA puff.

Launcher position now set to 1605, ~flush with limiter. Next shot will turn off NINJA and keep outer gap the same.
Jan 23 2008 12:04:23:783PM1080123009Greg WallaceSome trips, but density at the grill was still pretty low. Next shot will decrease outer gap from 1.5cm to 1.0cm to increase the probe density. No glowing at all even with grill flush to limiter.

0.3V reduction in Vloop.
Jan 23 2008 12:18:08:533PM1080123010Greg WallaceNo signs of glowing with launcher flush to limiter and 1.0cm outer gap. Strong current drive, ~0.3V reduction in Vloop, no trips. A good shot.

Next shot will move the x-point out in major radius by 1cm.

Jan 23 2008 12:34:27:613PM1080123011Greg WallaceCoupling was better on this shot, especially on the bottom rows. Next shot will decrease outer gap to 0.7cm.

Jan 23 2008 12:42:37:060PM1080123012Greg WallaceAnother good shot. Density at the grill seems to have increased by about a factor of 2. Coupling on top now better than coupling on bottom towards end of shot?

Next shot will decrease outer gap to 0.5cm.
Jan 23 2008 12:56:04:547PM1080123013Greg WallaceLH ran clean on this shot. Injection from hot spot on top of D row at 0.35s. Best coupling we've seen all day, 20% reflected power with nl_04=4=4.4e19.

Next shot will repeat to see if injection happens again.
Jan 23 2008 01:13:19:300PM1080123014Greg WallaceAnother good shot. No signs of injections coming from the launcher and the reflections were around 20% for the entire shot. nl_04 a tad higher at 4.4-4.6e19. Vloop down by 0.2V steady later in shot.

Next shot will decrease density to 3.5e19.
Jan 23 2008 01:23:58:890PM1080123015Greg Wallacenl_04 a little lower this time, around 4.2e19. Strong ECE signal on this one, near 20 on Ch9. Also slightly greater than 0.2V reduction in Vloop. Reflections still near 20%.

Diffuse flash on LH camera at 0.84s. Doesn't seem to harm anything.

Next shot will increase power to 100kW per klystron.
Jan 23 2008 01:31:29:290PM1080123016Greg WallaceKlystron 2 and klystron 4 did not fire, thus tripping the CPS. Next shot will repeat.
Jan 23 2008 01:48:16:620PM1080123017Greg WallaceMore problems with klystrons 2 and 4 not firing.
Jan 23 2008 02:18:53:170PM1080123018Greg WallaceShot ran at 40kV. Seems to be a problem running at 50kV. Maybe fixed now? Next shot will be 100kW per klystron.

Near 0.4V reduction in Vloop. ECE CH9 off the scale. Lots of hards visible on the WIDE2 camera. Grill looks fine, no glowing or flashing. Reflections 20-25%.
Jan 23 2008 02:35:35:253PM1080123019Greg WallaceShot ran clean at 100kW per klystron. Approaching 0.4V reduction in Vloop. nl_04~3.8e19. Next shot will increase to 120kW per klystron. Reflections still 20-25%.

Diffuse flash in front of LH grill at .84s.
Jan 23 2008 02:44:13:827PM1080123020Greg WallaceAnother good shot at 120kW per klystron, 675kW net. 0.4V reduction in Vloop.

Next shot will increase to 140kW per klystron.
Jan 23 2008 02:56:36:637PM1080123021Greg WallaceClean shot at 800kW. Yahoo! Again, ~0.4V reduction in Vloop and ECE Ch9 saturated.

nl_04 increases to 4.4e19. Some flashing on the grill near column 22/23.

Next shot will repeat same power level to see if flashing goes away.
Jan 23 2008 03:08:14:493PM1080123022Greg WallaceClean shot again at 800kW net power. Next shot will increase to 155kW per klystron.

Again, 0.4V reduction in Vloop, ECE off the scale.
Jan 23 2008 03:20:19:290PM1080123023Greg WallaceArc in column 15 in the jungle gym between the Magic-T and the Pant Leg.

Next shot will reduce to 140kW per klystron.
Jan 23 2008 03:32:24:570PM1080123024Greg WallaceClean shot at 140kW per klystron. 0.4V reduction in Vloop, saturated ECE, beautiful shot. Next shot will increase power to 150kW per klystron.
Jan 23 2008 03:43:36:253PM1080123025Greg WallaceClean shot at 150kW per klystron! Again 0.4V reduction in Vloop. nl_04 around 4.4e19. 875kW net!!!

Next shot increase to 160kW per klystron.
Jan 23 2008 03:55:25:593PM1080123026Greg WallaceBody current fault. Will repeat for the next shot.
Jan 23 2008 04:17:50:200PM1080123027Greg WallaceArcing in column 15 between the MagicT and the PantLeg. Will reduce to 150kW per klystron.
Jan 23 2008 04:30:57:950PM1080123028Greg WallaceMore arcing in column 15 between the Pant Leg and the Magic T.

Reduce klyston 8 to 140kW, increase Ip to 875kA.
Jan 23 2008 04:43:24:730PM1080123029Greg WallaceArc in waveguide 3 between Magic T and Pant Leg. As usual this is a column with a phase shifter. Next shot will decrease power to 140kW for all klystrons.
Jan 23 2008 04:56:51:900PM1080123030Greg WallaceClean shot at 800kW net and 880kA plasma current. Next shot will keep power same and increase to 1MA plasma current.
Jan 23 2008 05:15:32:610PM1080123031Greg WallaceMany trips again. Density somewhat lower at the grill given that the plasma current increased. This caused poor coupling. Looks like the trips were caused by another arc in column 3 between the Magic T and the Pant Leg.
