| MP 448A Comparison of Small ELM regimes on C-Mod, MAST and NSTX (Rev A)
Session Leader: Rajesh Maingi Phys. Op: Steve Wolfe This run will essentially follow the run plan of the revised MP, following up on prior C-Mod runs in 2006, and NSTX and MAST expts in 2007. All dicharges 5.4 T, ICRF heated, no LH. Most at q95=5.5 (approx 720 kA). The first 3 steps are highest priority: 1. Set up DN target discharge. Start with shot (11?) from 1080125 Compare with NSTX target and adjust shape and/or q95 as necessary. Use target NL04=6x 1019 m-2, which should give EDA H-mode, and modest ICRF (2-3 MW) for these shots so it can tune up. Start with cryopump ON. 4 shots. 2. Power/beta scan in DN. Increase power shot to shot in 1.0-0.5 MW increments (3.5 MW, 4.0 MW, 4.5 MW, 5.0 MW?). (reducing # steps, to minimize erosion) Monitor ELM type (expect to start getting ELMy regime) and pedestal beta. At some point Pped may saturate. This or the power limit would set the achievable beta for this q95, which will be a key constraint on the experiment 6 shots. 3. Power/beta scan in LSN. Return to LSN, as on 1060512005, and, guided by max available power and ELM appearance in DN, conduct a limited power scan. Check for appearance of ELMs and other fluctuations. 4 Shots (It may prove more efficient to switch between DN and LSN at each power level, once ELMs are obtained). A choice will then need to be made, based on time remaining, and the results (ELMs or not...) on the order of the following steps: 4/5. Density/nu* scan; in DN and/or LSN discharges. First reduce, then raise, target density shot to shot. 6. Higher q95 in LSN. For a few shots, reduce Ip to ~ 500 kA to give q95~8. (This is to obtain a match to prior NSTX Small ELM discharges, in case NSTX encounters difficulty reducing q in this shape.) |

| MP448a: Comparison of small ELM regimes on C-Mod, MAST and NSTX
Session summary: we started from discharge #1080125011 and tried to reduce the lower X-point triangularity to be more like NSTX, while also reducing Ip from 0.8 MA to 0.7 MA. This shape change worked, but we could not get small ELMs in that shape, either at 0.7 or 0.8 MA. The only shape that gave us the small ELMs was the original target. We also suffered from ~ 10 disruptions in a row. List of useful shots: 05 ?? balanced DN, 3 MW steady RF power. Ped. Te still too low? Need 600 eV? 06 ?? Drop delta further; ok for shape matching now. RF at 3.5 MW, Maybe fuzzy Dalpha at 0.75s, but no clear small ELMs. 07 ?? Ramp drsep ramp downward from 1-1.2 sec. 4 MW power. No ELMs. 08 ?? Keep drsep at -0.4cm throughout. 4 MW steady power. Same fuzziness at 0.7 sec. Nice shot, no ELMs. 09 ?? increase Ip to 0.82 MA for sweet spot in Ip. RF tripped at 0.68sec, before we expected to see small ELMs. Power supply problem ~ 1.2sec. No Small ELMs. 22 - repeat of 1080125011 ?? got 2.0 MW, and no small ELMs 23 ?? repeat of 1080125011 ?? got 2.4 MW for a little while, ~ 680ms, and then dropped to 1 MW, and saw no evidence of small ELMs. 24 ?? repeat of 1080125011 ?? got 3.5 MW from 0.66 sec ?? 0.71 sec, and 2.5 MW afterwards. Got small ELMs from 0.7-0.75 sec. on Hughes??scope. Jim Terry sees small ELMs on his GPI. 26 ?? repeat of 09 with higher power. Good, got 3.5 MW for most of shot. No small ELMs! 27 ?? repeat of 24 ?? good, small ELMs back, but fewer than 24. Only 2.8 MW rf power shows on scope, but actually 3.5 MW (d/a error). 29 ?? repeat of 26, except with lower X-point changed to be identical to 27. Good 3.5 MW rf power, very high Teped ~ 0.8 kV, but no small ELMs. Note the residual difference in target density all day long between Jerry??s shape and ??our? shape. |

Physop summary for 1080129
MP#448A Comparison of Small ELM regimes on C-Mod, MAST and NSTX (Rev A)
SL: Maingi (with assistance from Hubbard, Hughes, and Meyer (remote from MAST)
PO: wolfe
EO: Pfeiffer, Fitzgerald, Byford
This run started well, and ended pretty well, with a dreadful period
in the middle. We accomplished maybe half of the run plan and Bob
will run an extra half-day tomorrow to make up for it.
We started as planned from a modification of 1080125011,
with lower current, lower density, and put the zcur to -7mm, aiming for
double null, at .8sec instead of 1.15sec. Following the plan, we tweaked this
over several shots to try to match the NSTX shape. These mostly did not
seem to have elms, although maybe on shot 6 there was something.
On shot#9 we raised the current back to 800kA, and got a good shot
with the right shape, but it disrupted at 1.35sec. Much later in the
day we found out that this disruption was caused by rf interference,
probably from J-port. This effect also caused a disruption on shot#17,
which is when I noticed it. The shape we ended up with had lower triangularity
than 1080125011, and lower elongation.
Shots#10-16 all had disruptions, mostly before the rf came on, with
evidence of something (probably made of iron) spewing from the lower
divertor. We also had other problems with power supplies and otherwise
during the 3 hours between shot#9 and shot#21. I loaded a variety of shots in
segments 3 and 4 to try to investigate the disruption and/or supply problems.
Finally, for shot#21 I loaded an upper null from the LH run on 1080115003
and ran it ohmic. This ran full length, and the rest of the day was
disruption-free.
For shot 22 we loaded the active segment from Jerry's day 1080125011 (in seg3)
and that ran fine, with J-port off; the next shot we turned J back on,
switched off at 1.2sec. Shot #24 ran this equilibrium with J on and had ELMs.
For shot 25 we then went back to the shape of shot#9 (in seg2) and that ran,
but had no ELMs.
Shot 27 was a repeat of 24 (Jerry's shape) and once again had ELMs.
Shot 29 took the shape of 25 (and 9) and moved the rxl back to 0 (from .007)
to increase the triangularity to match that of 24 and 27. This also
did not have ELMs.
After the run, we realized that there remained a density program difference
between 9,25,29 at 6e19 and 24,27 at 7e19. This will be dealt with tomorrow.
As seen before when operating with the cryopump, I found it necessary
to raise the pre-puff during the day to get rid of runaways, then
dropped it again late in the day, starting at shot#26.
We ended up with about 16 useful shots, 1-9,22-24,26-27, and 29. The last
few shots had very hot pedestals and stored energy. Shot#29 got to 173kJ,
which may be a record for 800kA. We had a neutron alert (>1e14 neuts) by
the end of the day.
The horrible disruptive behavior between #10 and #21 is still unexplained.
Also, the ef2 pickup effect seen on 9 and 17 may well come back.
The boronization seems somewhat degraded at the end of the day, but not
as badly as I might have feared considering the disruptions, and high power.
Scorecard:
No power shots 1
Duds 1 (oh2l fault)
fizzles 2
plasmas 25 (11 disrupted before rampdown)

shots 29

| Jan 29 2008 10:03:39:357AM | 1080129001 | Delta a little too high - want something more like 0.5. Kappa a little
too low, but we may be at the upper range for this li. Kappa not too different so it will probably be ok.
| Jan 29 2008 10:02:48:340AM | 1080129003 | Changed the shape to get lower delta. Went to USN. | |
| Jan 29 2008 10:47:11:327AM | 1080129005 | Nice long EDA H-mode, and balanced DN. Seems like triangularity is still a little higher than the NSTX shot, which is probably closer to 0.46 or so. Tweak this on the next shot. | |
| Jan 29 2008 02:06:58:343PM | 1080129006 | Nice DN, triangularity still a bit high, but probably ok for matching
purposes. Got 3.5 MW rf - decent, but can still get more.
| Jan 29 2008 02:04:11:013PM | 1080129007 | Marginal fuzzy behavior on D-alpha this shot an dlast, not convincing
in terms of signs of ELMs. 4 MW rf power for good part of the shot.
| Jan 29 2008 02:03:32:717PM | 1080129008 | Fix ssep to -4mm from 0.6sec onwards. GPI is coming in at ~ 0.6 sec.
Still lots of fuzz, but not as convincing as e.g. 1080125011. Shot actually had 4 MW steady rf power - decent. Hughe saw "clearer" small ELMs at 0.8 MA, but not 0.6 or 1.0 MA. Maybe 0.7 MA is not high enough - increase to 0.8 MA on next shot.
| Jan 29 2008 11:45:30:847AM | 1080129009 | Increase Ip by 100 kA to get closer to Friday's condition. RF tripped
out early, so we couldn't see evidence of small ELMs yet. Try again.
| Jan 29 2008 12:18:03:460PM | 1080129010 | disrupted early. | |
| Jan 29 2008 12:18:10:507PM | 1080129011 | disrupted earlier | |
| Jan 29 2008 06:37:12:937PM | 1080129022 | repeat of 1080125011 - asked for 2 MW, and got it. No sign of small ELMs. | |
| Jan 29 2008 06:37:44:657PM | 1080129023 | repeat of 1080125011 - got 2.4 MW for a short while, and then dropped to
1 MW. No Small ELMs. | |
| Jan 29 2008 06:38:54:500PM | 1080129024 | repeat of 1080125011 - got 3.5 MW for a litle while, followed by 2.5 MW.
During the 3.5 MW phase, see clear small ELMs from 0.7-0.75 sec. Jim Terry sees thm on GPI as well. Good shot.
| Jan 29 2008 06:39:41:690PM | 1080129026 | repeat of 1080129009 - the better shape match to NSTX/MAST. Got 3.5 MW,
but no small ELMs! Target density a little lower than in previous shot.
| Jan 29 2008 06:42:50:740PM | 1080129027 | repeat of #24 - 3.5 MW rf power (only 2.8 MW show - lost a power trace),
and still see clear small ELMs, also on GPI.
| Jan 29 2008 06:42:04:160PM | 1080129029 | repeat of #26, except that we have changed the lower X-point to match #24.
Practically this means increasing lower triangularity a little. Very high teped, 3.5 MW, but no small ELMs! Target densityt also a little lower than #24, and upper shape is a little different still.

| Jan 29 2008 07:37:23:560AM | Steve Wolfe | Setting up for MP#448A (Maingi/Hubbard small ELMs) Load from 1080125011 Seg1 settings (no changes): PG4: 38msec (cryo should be on) Rcur offset=1000 Br_0 = 0 IC_EF4=-1340 Seg2: Reduce Ip program from 800kA to 700kA Zero the SSEP waveform (not used, but can monitor error) Reduce nl04 from 7e19 to 6e19; call predictor to be sure it has latest TCI cal. Move clearin ref change (ZXA=+0.39) from 1.15sec to 3sec; if we decide to do upper null, then put it at the right time. RF starts at 0.6sec, so move zcur shift (-.014 to -.007m) from [1.1,1.2] to [0.7,0.8] Note that rcur moves out from [.6585,.660] at [1.2,1.514]; this could be compensation for clearin ref point that I removed. Have to watch what it does on first shot. Note there is a pg3 puff in seg2, 50V dropping to 20, then 0 after .6sec leave it for now. Shot#3: Increase initial Ip point from 450kA to 550kA at .1sec
Decrease triang, increase elong to match nstx shape better
Drop zxl from [-.00113,-.00038] to -.005
rxl from 0 to .005
rxu from -.015 to -.010 (across the board)
cryo warmed up, but shot went (IGT in high 7 range at pulse)

| Jan 29 2008 11:15:01:717AM | 1080129007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: Sweep zcur down to 1.0 to 1.2sec, down to -.014 aiming for ssep=-.005; put rf time back out to 1.4sec NINJA puffing at 0.8 for JT plasma disrupts at 1.55sec, in rampdown. Looks like ef2's are going to zero, then chopper rails. Bad bounce in startup, need to add some gas next time, but no runways. Got the ssep sweep ok. |
| Jan 29 2008 11:37:06:010AM | 1080129008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: pg4 from 38ms to 42ms Slow down zcur change in rampdown Leave zcur flat at -.014, aiming for -4mm ssep shorten gate valve toggle to 3minutes so we pump out the regen plasma disrupts in rampdown, got 4MW, nothing that looks like elms to me. still a bounce in startup, not as bad, no runaways. |
| Jan 29 2008 11:55:57:263AM | 1080129009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Increase Ip to 800kA plasma, still disrupting, this time at 1.37sec, Looks like a vertical problem, not sure why. The EF2's are in voltage saturation. looked like two h-modes. Both D and E dropped out,. Next: repeat for rf, try dropping ef2byef4 gain |
| Jan 29 2008 12:08:34:213PM | 1080129010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: repeat for rf, try dropping ef2byef4 gain from 2 to 1 Early disruption. 0.55sec. Looks like a big injection. EF4 current is at zero, no vertical problem. I don't think it mattered, but next shot, change IC_EF4 program from -27 to +500A to get it out of the deadzone at crossover. |
| Jan 29 2008 12:24:21:940PM | 1080129011 | Steve Wolfe | shot#11: change IC_EF4 program from -27 to +500A to get it out of the deadzone at crossover. No seg1 change, despite the disruption (not sure which way to go) Another early disruption. .27sec; Why? Go back to ef2byef4 gain back to 2, shouldn't make a difference. |
| Jan 29 2008 12:38:53:697PM | 1080129012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: Go back to ef2byef4 gain back to 2, shouldn't make a difference. Don't swing out quite so far, rcur at .379 from .6605 to .659 runaways, and disrupts at 0.7sec Big injections seem to come up the inner wall? Next: raise pg4 |
| Jan 29 2008 12:45:57:643PM | 1080129013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: pg4 from 42 to 45ms Another early disruption Next: load seg3 from 1080125011 and just run it. |
| Jan 29 2008 01:02:54:443PM | 1080129014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: load seg3 from 1080125011 and just run it with no changes except raise pg4 from 45 to 49ms Still disrupting. 0.6sec. Never made it to rf this time. Startup looks good, no bounce, no runaways, sawteeth start at .27sec power supplies all seem to be in range (V and I), it's just getting hit with a brick. |
| Jan 29 2008 01:13:45:347PM | 1080129015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: Can't see anything obvious. Could just keep repeating and hope to burn it away. Could run an upper null to verify the problem is in the lower divertor, as it seems to be from video, but that won't fix anything. Repeat once more And it disrupts 0.3sec. Not getting better. |
| Jan 29 2008 01:29:04:240PM | 1080129016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Change to upper null in seg3 Move zcur to 0 from 0.2sec on. Move clearin ref zxa=+.39 to .3sec EXcept I did it in seg2. Now do it in seg3 Disrupts at .55sec. Wasn't upper null? Did I not load it correctly? Looks like I loaded before I applied the waveform. My bad. Try that again |
| Jan 29 2008 01:51:45:610PM | 1080129017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: Change to upper null in seg3 Move zcur to 0 from 0.2sec on. Move clearin ref zxa=+.39 to .3sec Make sure it's loaded this time. THis one makes it to 1.2sec, got upper null ssep=+4mm RF likes it, 2.8MW, stays L-mode This one looks like a vertical problem. It looks ike ef2u stops following demand at 1.19sec. Voltage goes up, demand goes down. |
| Jan 29 2008 02:15:24:713PM | 1080129018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: Repeat without jport, see if it runs all the way through. Note that on shots 9 and 17 the high demand shows up on both ef2u and ef2l; on shot9 it's at 1.34sec Early disruption. Runaways early. Junk coming in from 0.2sec on, big marfe. |
| Jan 29 2008 02:26:29:117PM | 1080129019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: Repeat without jport, see if it runs all the way through. Pg4 from 49 to 54msec Did it again. Startup is better, no runaways, but plasma still goes berserk, disrupts at .3sec, no marfe, never diverts. EFC floors, this one has a vertical thrash |
| Jan 29 2008 02:37:36:943PM | 1080129019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: Repeat without jport, see if it runs all the way through. Pg4 from 49 to 54msec Did it again. Startup is better, no runaways, but plasma still goes berserk, disrupts at .3sec, no marfe, never diverts. EFC floors, this one has a vertical thrash Try loading an upper null from last week 1080115003 into seg4 and run that. I don't know what's going on. |
| Jan 29 2008 02:42:45:887PM | 1080129020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20:Try loading an upper null from lh run 1080115003 into seg4 and run that. I don't know what's going on. The program on shot#17 is questionable, although it ran to 1.2sec it may be touchy. We know the lh shot ran ok on the 15th.Presumably there may still be junk in the lower divertor. Dud - oh2l crowbar in pre-charge at -0.7sec. Time to sacrifice a chicken. |
| Jan 29 2008 03:06:44:367PM | 1080129021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21:Try loading an upper null from lh run 1080115003 into seg4 and run that. I don't know what's going on. The program on shot#17 is questionable, although it ran to 1.2sec it may be touchy. We know the lh shot ran ok on the 15th.Presumably there may still be junk in the lower divertor. (NINJA puff off) plasma full length. Finally. nl04=4e19, ssep=+15mm had a bouncy startup and some runaways earlier. next: load shot 1080125011 back into seg3 and run without Jport |
| Jan 29 2008 03:22:24:713PM | 1080129022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: load shot 1080125011 back into seg3 and run without Jport pg4 from 54 to 59msec. If there is still a problem in the lower divertor, it will probably disrupt early. plasma full length, some early runaways, 4 h-modes Prf=2MW, radiation rising faster than earlier, the disruptions probably have taken a toll on the boronization Next: try with J |
| Jan 29 2008 03:29:33:940PM | 1080129023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: try with J, off at 1.2sec pg4 from 59 to 65msec,rcur offset from 1000 to 1500 plasma full length, 2 h-modes Didn't get E-port, and J faults early. Only had 1MW for most of the shot. |
| Jan 29 2008 03:47:18:553PM | 1080129024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24:repeat; startup looked good on 23, so it probably will die this time try again with J, off at 1.2sec. Hoping for E this time too. plasma. full length, one h-mode, then maybe a weak one. Eport faults after .6sec. J stays on to 1.2sec, no problem on ef2 supply |
| Jan 29 2008 04:00:53:147PM | 1080129025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: Import seg2 from 1080129009 and run that. fizzle, time to drop pg4 |
| Jan 29 2008 04:17:25:637PM | 1080129026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: pg4 from 65ms to 58ms still trying seg2 from 1080129009. plasma full length, 4 h-modes, first one looks steamy (around 150kJ at 800kA) Got 3.5MW with three dropouts. Prad rising pretty fast, Te8 gets to 800eV, then drops right back down. Startup looks good. |
| Jan 29 2008 04:42:25:350PM | 1080129027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: pg4 from 58ms to 54ms repeat of 24: seg3 on seg2 off, 3.5MW of RF plasma full length, 2h-modes 162kJ and it has some elms NOTE: The eport power didn't come up, but Yijun says it was same as 26, total 3.5MW Next: go back to 26 (seg2) and move rxl back to 0 (as on this one.) |
| Jan 29 2008 04:48:38:610PM | 1080129028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: go back to 26 (seg2) and move rxl back from .007 to 0 (as on 24 and 27) testing tiny change in lower triangularity fizzle. No surprise. next: drop pg4 another 5msec |
| Jan 29 2008 05:06:18:880PM | 1080129029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: pg4 from 54 ro 48msec go back to 26 (seg2) and move rxl back from .007 to 0 (as on 24 and 27) testing tiny change in lower triangularity plasma full length, 3 h-modes. 172kJ at peak of first Got 3.5MW. I don't see ELMs, we did get the higher triangularity END of Run |
