MP 520: Sawtooth Evolution Studies

The locked mode portion of the experiment was successful. Two steady locked mode discharges were obtained (Shots 17 & 18) with sufficient argon levels to provide a good wavelength calibration for Hirex-Sr.

The intra-sawtooth profile measurement portion of the run was partially successful. Due to a problem with J port, we are unable to use RF phasing techniques to generate monster sawtooth oscillations. We did, however, take useful data at the maximum Hirex-sr frame rate (200Hz) on 3 discharges (24, 25 & 26) with moderate sawtooth oscillation periods (~20ms).

The tooth-to-tooth repeatability was quite good during the flattop portions of these discharges and so it should be possible to add sawtooth oscillations together to improve the quality of the data.

(Shots 1--16)

Session summary: we started from discharge #1080125011 and changed the RXP by
+1.2cm and -0.7 cm. Neither of these changes produced small ELMs, only the
original RXP! We also tried Ip=0.7 MA, and did not see small ELMs. We did a target
density scan from 0.6 to 0.8 and found the best small ELM signatures at 0.8,
see#1080130007. We did a power scan showing that the minimum rf power for these
ELMs was ~ 3.1 MW, and we also got a shot with 4.7 MW, still seeing the small
ELMs.

List of useful shots:
1 ?? repeat of 24 from yesterday with lower nel. Actually got same or higher density because of delayed L-H. Small ELMs visible on SXR channel #s 6-7 (drop indicating outflux) and #12-13 (increase, indicating filament). These precede the fast D-alpha.
2 ?? restore 1080129026 with higher nel to 7. Good shot, no small ELMs.
3 ?? start from #1 above, and move Rx out to 56.5 cm from 55.3cm. Got 56.7 cm, and lower kappa, but no small ELMs.
4 ?? Start from #1 and move RXP in by 1 cm. Actually moved in by 7mm. No small ELMs.
6 ?? try nel to 8. Got it ?? small ELMs later in shot, as density pumps out.
7 ?? repeat. Great shot ?? best small ELMs. Show up the best on global_param2 Dalpha and also on D/Eport RF power.
9 ?? turn off Jport and go back to density of 8 as in #7. Tried for 2.4 MW ?? got it. No small ELMs.
10 ?? repeat with max. power of 4.5 MW ?? got it, and the small ELMs! Nice shot.
13 ?? repeat ?? good shot, 3.1 MW rf power, small ELMs from 0.7-0.75 sec, very modest, but they are ok. This is lower range of input power for these ELMs.
14 ?? drop Ip to 0.7 MA ?? no ELMs, below threshold.

Run summary for Wednesday 30 Jan 2008

am: MP448 Comparison of Small ELM regimes on C-Mod, MAST, & NSTX (continuation)
pm: MP520 Rotation and Ti during sawteeth

Session leader: R. Maingi (am); A. Ince-Cushman (pm)
Physics operator: R. Granetz

The first half of the day was a continuation of yesterday's run, and it was
pretty successful from a physics standpoint. There were two problems with
machine operation that were troublesome though. One was apparent
contamination of the EF2 feedback control signal, suspected to be due to RF
pickup from the J-antenna system. The other problem was a high
thermocouple reading on one of the TF legs (D-right; outboard vertical)
which caused 15+ minute delays between shots. This problem developed
around midday. My understanding is that the resistance measurement did not
corroborate the cooling problem, so this may just be a faulty thermocouple.

After shot 21 we had a power room access to look into the EF2/RF pickup
problem. The control board for EF2 (and EFC and the A-coils) is in a rack
that's only a couple of meters from RF tubes, and the cabinet doors had
been removed. So we put an RF choke on the control wires, and replaced the
two front doors. After that, we ran J-port up to 1.5 MW and didn't see any
problems with EF2.

Session Leader Comments
Jan 30 2008 09:12:35:307AM1080130001 repeat of 1080129024 with lower nel - got nice small ELMs from 0.7-0.8 sec, as
yesterday. H-mode transition delayed a little, and target density was
actually higher than yesterday. Nice shot.
Jan 30 2008 11:28:08:103AM1080130002 repeat of 1080129026 with higher nel to 7. Good shot, but no small ELMs.
Jan 30 2008 11:29:03:167AM1080130003 repeat of #1 above and increase Rx from 55.3cm ro 56.5 cm. Actually got 56.7cm
but no small ELMs.

Jan 30 2008 12:00:03:170PM1080130004 repeat of #1 above and decrease Rx from 55.3cm ro 54.3 cm. Actually got 54.7cm
but no small ELMs. The small ELM window is really narrow.

Jan 30 2008 12:01:11:860PM1080130005 repeat of #1 above with target nel of 9. rf did not couple - neutral density
too high?

Jan 30 2008 12:01:56:800PM1080130006 repeat of #1 with target nel=8. Got it - small ELMs show up later in shot.

Jan 30 2008 12:02:23:750PM1080130007 repeat of last shot - best small ELM signatures of all the shots so far.
rf=3.5 MW.

Jan 30 2008 12:02:46:207PM1080130008 Try for nel=9 - disrupted early.

Jan 30 2008 12:03:55:580PM1080130009 Go back to target nel=8, with rf=2.4 MW with no J-Port. Good. Nice steady
EDA with no sign of small ELMs - this is below the power/beta threshold.

Jan 30 2008 12:04:37:350PM1080130010 Repeat with max rf=4.5 MW. Good - small ELMs still present, this is high
power shot.

Jan 30 2008 12:04:51:113PM1080130011 Repeat with rf=3.2 MW - fizzle.
Jan 30 2008 12:05:02:223PM1080130012 Try again - fizzle.
Jan 30 2008 12:41:15:187PM1080130013 Try again - good shot. 3.1 MW of rf power, very weak signatures of small
ELMs. This appears to be right at the lower power threshold for small
ELMs.
Jan 30 2008 12:41:38:297PM1080130014 Go back to 3.6 MW and drop Ip to 0.7 MA - good shot, no small ELMs.
Jan 30 2008 12:44:03:347PM1080130015 Go back to 3.6 MW and drop Ip to 0.7 MA - good shot, no small ELMs. 0.7 MA
is below the Ip threshold.
Jan 30 2008 12:56:32:690PM1080130016 Go back to 3.6 MW and use Ip of 0.75 MA. Dud - cryo burp.
Jan 30 2008 12:56:58:080PM1080130017 Try again for 0.75 MA.
Jan 30 2008 02:42:02:343PM1080130017Alex Ince-CushmanGood locked mode discharge (0.6s-1.4s). The off axis rotation channels seem to be locking in two stages (first step at 0.6 and then another at 1.0). For the next shot we will increase the argon puff from 200ms to 300ms. Puff at 1.4s seemed to "un-lock" the shot.
Jan 30 2008 02:41:23:403PM1080130018Alex Ince-CushmanGood locked mode discharge (0.5s-1.5s). A two-staged locking process (similar to the previous shot) was observed.
Jan 30 2008 03:03:42:947PM1080130021Alex Ince-CushmanShot disrupted at 0.75s. Argon signal levels are good. Sawteeth with periods up to 20ms were observed.
Jan 30 2008 06:12:24:367PM1080130024Alex Ince-CushmanThere was not enough argon in the plasma to prevent H-mode transitions. There was a very large swing in rotation (~80km/s) caused by the ~4MW of RF.

Physics Operator Comments
Jan 30 2008 08:45:44:057AMRobert GranetzLoaded shot 1080129024, which had segments 1 and 3 active. Decreased nl_04 in segment 3
from 0.7 to 0.6e20 m-2. Set pre-fill pulse length to 60 ms because the cryopump in on.
Jan 30 2008 09:14:46:933AM1080130001Robert GranetzShot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3.6 MW total from D, E, & J. Cryopump on.

Jan 30 2008 10:44:27:223AM1080130006Robert GranetzShot 06 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.17 s. According to Steve Wolfe, it's a problem
with RF leakage getting into the EF2 control.

Next shot: repeat, except turn off J-port power at t=1.05 s.
Jan 30 2008 10:54:48:423AM1080130007Robert GranetzShot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3.5 MW (until J turns off at t=1.05 s, as directed).
Session leader says, ""best ELMs to date"". Target nl=0.8e20 m-2, as requested.

Next shot: increase nl_04 to 0.9e20 m-2. Also increase pre-fill pulse by 3 ms.
Jan 30 2008 11:05:31:733AM1080130008Robert GranetzShot 08 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.71 s, again due to RF pickup in EF2U.

Jan 30 2008 11:20:07:627AM1080130009Robert GranetzShot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. Long EDA H-mode. Prf=2.4 MW from D & E. We kept
J-port off in order to avoid problems with EF2 pickup. Target nl_04 = 0.8e20 m-2,
as requested.

Next shot: repeat, except turn on J-port to get 4+ MW total, hopefully without causing
a problem for EF2.
Jan 30 2008 11:40:56:010AM1080130010Robert GranetzShot 10 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.23 s, again due to EF2/RF problem. Prf=4.5 MW.
Wth peaks at 175 kJ.

Next shot: repeat, except decrease J-port so that total Prf=3.2 MW, and also turn off
J-port at t=1.0 s.
Jan 30 2008 11:45:45:390AM1080130011Robert GranetzShot 11 -- Fizzle. Post-disruption recovery?

Next shot: reduce pre-fill 1 ms (completely superfluous, of course)
Jan 30 2008 11:59:55:013AM1080130012Robert GranetzShot 12 -- Fizzle again.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill another 2 ms.
Jan 30 2008 12:14:47:360PM1080130013Robert GranetzShot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3.1 MW. Good startup.

Next shot: Drop Ip to 0.7 MW; raise Prf to 3.6 MW, and turn off J at t=1.0 s.
Keep the density at nl_04=0.8e20 m-2.
Jan 30 2008 12:35:33:260PM1080130014Robert GranetzShot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ip=0.7 MA. Prf=3.6 MW, with J purposely turning off at t=1.0 s.
Good startup. One EDA H-mode.

Next shot: increase Ip to 0.75 MA.
Jan 30 2008 12:48:56:807PM1080130015Robert GranetzShot 15 -- Dud. Cryopump burped, giving a pre-fill pressure of 0.130 mTorr.

Next shot: try again.
Jan 30 2008 01:09:48:283PM1080130016Robert GranetzShot 16 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.77 s, again due to EF2U/RF problem.

End of this MP. Next shot will begin MP 520.

Next shot: Load shot 1080116016 (locked mode velocity calibration). Reload seg 1 from shot 16 seg 1.
Turn off cryopump, and therefore reduce pre-fill to 22 ms.
Jan 30 2008 01:26:51:223PM1080130017Robert GranetzShot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, LSN. Ohmic. Got the locked mode (for
rotation calibration) at t=0.63 s (A-coil feedback was disabled). Good startup.

Next shot: same, except increase argon pulse length to 0.3 s. No cryopump; no ICRF
Jan 30 2008 01:49:15:580PM1080130018Robert GranetzShot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Locked mode starts at t=0.63 s again. Good startup.

Next shot: load 1080116021 (USN, 1 MA, nl_04=1.0e20 m-2). Reload startup from 1080130018 seg 1.
Turn on cryopump, so also set pre-fill pulse length to 64 ms. Turn on 3 MW of ICRF.
Jan 30 2008 02:26:17:247PM1080130019Robert GranetzShot 19 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.60 s. EF2/RF problem again.

Next shot: decrease nl_04 to 1.0e20 m-2. Have J-port phasing change during
the shot. Also reduce pre-fill by 4 ms for disruption recovery.
Jan 30 2008 02:36:19:023PM1080130020Robert GranetzShot 20 -- Fizzle. Slow Ip ramp...disruption recovery?

Next shot: reduce pre-fill another 4 ms.
Jan 30 2008 03:07:50:607PM1080130021Robert GranetzShot 21 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.76 s, again due to EF2/RF problem.

Power room access to shield EF2 control wires and put cabinet doors back
on the EF2/EF4/A-coil control cabinet.

Next shot: reduce argon plenum pressure to 1.3 psi.
Jan 30 2008 03:13:30:753PM1080130022Robert GranetzShot 22 -- Fizzle. Disruption recovery blues.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill another 4 ms.
Jan 30 2008 03:36:05:553PM1080130023Robert GranetzShot 23 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill another 5 ms.
Jan 30 2008 04:03:29:500PM1080130024Robert GranetzShot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=4 MW, but dropping out a lot, resulting in lots of short
H-modes. GPC gate valve was not enabled, so no ECE Te.

Next shot: Tweak early density; decrease pre-fill another 1 ms. Increase argon plenum pressure
to 2.0 psi. Decrease nl_04 to 0.9e20 m-2.
Jan 30 2008 04:27:23:450PM1080130025Robert GranetzShot 25 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at t=1.54 s (in rampdown). Got the GPC Te this time,
with good sawteeth. Prf=3.5 MW. No problems with EF2/RF pickup.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill 3 ms for disruption recovery.
Jan 30 2008 04:51:19:053PM1080130026Robert GranetzShot 26 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=3.5 MW. Large amplitude sawteeth on ECE. Inverted
sawteeth on central x-rays (due to the argon). Good startup.

Next shot: Increase argon plenum pressure to 2.5 psi.
Jan 30 2008 05:17:02:537PM1080130027Robert GranetzShot 27 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.67 s. The sawteeth stopped around t=0.53 s.
There's a bright reflection(?) on the inboard wall after the disruption
on the WIDE2 video.

End of run.
