| MP 523: Effect of Lower Hybrid Current Drive on Rotation Profile
Session Leader: Alex Ince-Cushman PhysOp: Jim Irby The goal of this experiment is to conduct a LH phase scan at fix power, to see the effect of LHCD on rotation profile evolution. Diagnostics: Hirex-sr, Thomson, Edge Thomson, Bolometer arrays, McPherson, PCI, Hard X-ray Camera Step 1: Reproduce trophy shot of LH induce rotation (1-2 shots) - shot 1080123022 - LH phase of 90, start at 0.8s for 500ms Step 2: Repeat baseline shot with no LH (1-2 shots) Step 3: Phase Scan - Perform phase scan at: 60, 90, 120 (4-5 shots) - Cell access: Switch LH hardware for phasing from -120 to -60 - Perform phase scan at: -60, -75, -90, -120 (5-6 shots) - Cell access: Switch LH hardware for phasing from 150 to 210 - Perform phase scan at: 150, 180, 210 (4-5 shots) Step 4: Locked mode discharge (time permitting) for Hirex-Sr calibration - Repeat discharge 108016016 |

| We had a total of 2 plasma discharges, neither of which had any LH. As a result no progress was made on the MP. |

| We got our first plasma today at 10:00 after a debug of the alternator field supply control circuitry. Turned out to be a failed local/remote switch on the supply. Then on shot 01 we had a TF crowbar and a ground fault indication. This problem was eventually tracked down to a bad MC14538B one Shot for the TF Crowbar (5 cents worth of hardware did us in for the day). The crowbar also resulted in a metal fluorescent light cover in the TF crowbar cabinet coming loose and possibly contacting the TF bus (ground faults?).
After several no power or TF only test shots, we got another plasma on shot 008. Since the TF inversion time was still set at 100 ms, the TF ramped down throughout the discharge, and we ended up with a q95 of 2. Finally, we got a full length discharge into rampdown on shot 009. No TF faults during either shot. We were able to request and maintain very low densities today with nl_04 at 3e19/m^2 and a few Torr-l/s of gas required most of the shot. From shot 10 on we were doing tests of the new OH protection computer. Steve Wolfe's summary of that work: Following the successful tests of Willy Burke's oh2 force computer on 31-Jan-2008 (shots #1080131011,012,013), I have disabled the dpcs_type2_fault procedure. The afol receiver used to receive this fault signal has been removed and the wiring in the fault chain modified to accept the Burke circuit (see Willy and Bill Cochran for details). For the time being I will leave the software procedure loaded but disabled in \hybrid::top.hardware.dpcs.loadables.procedures:output_pros:procedure_00 and will not reassign the output fiber associated with this function, so the software option will be available on demand. I hope it is not needed again. The secondary function that sets all dpcs power system outputs to zero on detection of out of range inputs remains active, as a backup feature. DPCS is no longer checking for out of range inputs during the pulse. The backup feature mentioned in the last sentence refers to the baseline checking routine which operates at t=-2sec, prior to power supply turn on times. If a bus rogowski signal is out of normal range at that time, dpcs will not issue waveform commands to any supplies and an error is flagged in the dpcs log file. This feature would have prevented the control problem last March which initiated the concerns over coil stresses with opposing oh currents, etc. |

| Jan 31 2008 09:14:22:047AM | Jim Irby | Gary and Andy have found an offset problem with D-Right Vertical. It is 10C colder than indicated in control room. Problem likely solder joint or reed relay. Joe will take care of offset in software until we can debug next week. We will watch D-Top and -Bottom today to make sure no other issues arise.

09:40 ---- Probably a control issue with supply, but nothing found as yet 10:02 --- Fixed --- failed local/remote switch Loaded 1080123022 into PCS: Ip 750 kA, nl_04 3e19/m^2, LSN I have left prepuff unchanged at 23 ms --- startup shot had no hards loaded plasma --- lost all breakers ---- TF crowbar The metal cover to a lamp in the TF crowbar cabinet came loose and was probably in contact with the TF bus possibly generating enough noise in the cabinet to cause erratic firing on the crowbar. The fluorescent lamp was shattered and pieces spread around the cabinet. We are cleaning up the cabinet, checking fuses, etc... |
| Jan 31 2008 11:58:31:143AM | 1080131002 | Jim Irby | fuses checked --- okay
TF resistance to ground checked --- clear --- no fault indication We will try a 50 kA TF test under hybrid control: 50 kA at t=-1.0 rampdown starting at +50 ms TF crowbared again (at low current). So we still have a problem; but it's in the crowbar cabinet! No indication of TF groundfault |
