Session Leader Plans

Author: Adrianus Sips

STEP 1: 9-11 shots
Develop current rise scenario (Ohmic): Repeat reference shot at lower density, Ip waveform, shape control with earlier divert.

(a), #2: Repeat discharge 1080108024, with modest changes: Reduce density rise after 100ms, by reducing the ne-waveform to 7e19 @ 400ms. Question: clamp Ip at 1.2 or ramp to 1.35MA as reference? With no heating during the flat top phase li may become too high for this plasma shape (vertical stability).

(b), #2-3: Tune up Ip waveform: Ip demand @ 100ms to 500kA, aim for control from 70-80ms onwards, linear ramp (wihtout pause) to 1.2MA @0.42s. Leave shaping waveform as #1080108024, but try to improve on the gains.

(c), #3-4: Adjust shape control to move X-point formation forward from 330ms (#1080108024), to 200ms-250ms. Keep plasma full bore before X-point formation.

(d), #2: Scan Ip ramp rate, pivot point @100ms, reaching 1.2MA @500ms (slower) and 350ms(faster)

STEP 2: 3-5 shots

(e), #1-2 Choose stable discharge from sequence above. Run at lowest density possible, by having no gas input after 100ms (during the rise phase)

(f), #2-3 Choose stable discharge from sequence above. Run at twice the density (reaching 1.4e20 @400ms). Go to 1e20 to get an intermediate point.

STEP 3: 4-5 shots

(g), #2 Repeat Ip rise at 7e19 or 1e20 (choose what seems best). Add 1.5MW ICRH from 200-250 ms onwards (continuing into the flat top).

(h), #2 Repeat Ip rise at 7e19 or 1e20 (choose what seems best). Add 3.0MW ICRH from 200-250 ms onwards continuing into the flat top).

(i), #1 Adjust Ip ramp rate for 3.0MW case when H-mode is formed (likely needing a slower Ip ramp)

--> DECIDE: Step 4a (j) or Step 4b (k)

STEP 4a: 5 shots to make an ITER demonstration discharge.
(j), #5: Develop the optimum combination of Ip ramp rate, density and heating to demonstrate a stable discharge with li(3)=0.7-1.0, aiming for li(3)=0.85 throughout the rise pahse

STEP 4b: 5 shots to document main limitations for achieving ITER goals
(k), #5: Document the limitations that prevent achieving li(3)=0.7-1.0. Document what is a stable li(3) for the current rise in C-Mod.

Physop plan
------------

Pretty much covered under SL_PLAN.

Load entire shot from 1080108024
Tweak seg1: pg4 from 36 to 22msec (no cryopump, no DNB)
Adjust to taste, avoiding runaways and fizzles (as best I can).

Step1:
a) reduce pg3 puff in seg1 and lower nl04 demand in seg2 from
1.1e20 to 0.7e19 @0.4sec, leave Ip flattop at 1.35MA, maybe
rampdown earlier.

b) reduce Ip at .1sec to 500kA, ramp to 1.2MA at .42 (linear)
copy Ip waveform to seg1, turn on seg1 Ip gain at 0.08sec
Tweak gains on Ip, clearin(?), rcur.

c) try for earlier diversion: push gain on clearin, xpoint waveforms
Aim for XPF at .2 to .25sec;
consider crowbar at .125sec, don't forget to move Voltage step.
Watch out for OH force from EF1L:OH2L:OH1 !
Move seg1 rcur program to stay full bore in ramp-up. Maybe let it
ride outboard limiter ?
d) Vary Ip time to 1.2MA: 0.5sec and 0.35sec

Step 2:
e) pick a good case from step 1 and run it at lower density-
reduce gas in seg1, reduce nl04 program in seg2.
Watch out for locked modes!
f) increase density to 1.4e20 at 0.4sec if possible, watch marfes
Take intermediate point 1.0e20

Step 3:

g) pick a denstity and repeat with ICRF 1.5MW from 0.2sec on through
flattop

h) Raise rf to 3MW

i) SL_PLAN says adjust Ip down ramp for H-mode

Step 4A (success):
Continue Ip ramp up to 1.35MA (q95~3.4) aiming for li(3)~0.85

Step 4B (document limitations)

What did we do today?
Ramped all dicharges to 1.35MA/5.4T

1. Repeat reference shot (#1080108024) at lower density: #001.

2. Tuned the Ip control, allowing variations in Ip ramp rates: #002-#004.

3. Tried to optimise the plasma position control, divert early: #005-#009.
Here #006,#007 and #009 dirsuption at the end of the current rise, leaving as
with the changes implemented in #005.

4. Ip ramp rate in Ohmic plasmas: #010 (std), #011 (slow, but earlier divert),
#012 fast (disrupts).

5. Density scan, Ohmic: Low density for Std Ip ramp rate #014, #016 and low
density for slow Ip ramp rate (#018). High density prepared, no plasma #017.

6. RF power input: 1.5MW, #019, #020 (increased density). 3MW: #021, #022.
These 4 pulses were done at the std Ip ramp rate (cf #010).

7. Ip ramp rate with heating: Slow ramp rate, 3MW (#023, compared to #022), ever
increasing ramp rates after divertor configuration (0.22s) done for #024
(3MW), #026 (3MW). And increasing ramp rate at 2WM ICRH from #027 to #031.

Most of the MP plan was done. Need to have a look the data. Plasma inductance did not move a lot (apart from Ip rise rate) despite the different variations performed .

The limiter phase shows variation in the li, which need to be understood in terms of plasma density, initial Ip rise rate, Te and Zeff.

Should have done:
- The higher density case in first 250ms.
- Repeat one of these pulses in a Boronised machine.

MP#524 Development of ITER relevant current rise phase
SL: Sips
PO: wolfe
EO: Parkin, Pierson, Byford

A difficult run, but we covered most of the conditions in
the run plan. Unfortunately, none of these efforts made a
substantial improvement in the maximum li during the current rise
compared to our starting case of 1080108024.

We eventually did manage to get early diversion, at around .23sec,
but this did not really help the li. We did learn that, despite earlier
worries, the force on OH2L due to higher EF1 current did not increase
above the starting level of 200kN. The EF1 crowbar was moved from
.2 to .17. We did not try moving it earlier, but there is proabably
room to do so in this rampup if we want to without excess forces on
the stack. All the cases with the XPF at .23sec went limited again
briefly during OH1 crossover, typically ~.3 to .4sec on all these
shots. Programming larger gaps to avoid this was unsuccessful, but
it may be that more agressive efforts would work. The ITER-like startup
is rather fat, as is the final equilibrium, but we seemed to have
some margin on n/ncrit at the crossover time, before we get to full
elongation or current. Note that for the earliest divertor cases,
the XPF came with Ip ge 700kA.

An interesting case with low initial li (before XPF) is shot 7, which
however disrupted before flattop. The only intentional change between
the previous shot, which had a locked mode, and 7 was higher density,
0.8 vs 0.7e20 at 0.4sec. One case we did not get was a higher density example, nl04=1.4e20. However, the evidence that the density was having a significant
effect is not strong.

ICRF heating as early as .1 sec succeeded in raising the temperature, but
not in lowering li. The RF was reasonably robust during the rise phase,
with some trips at H-mode transitions.

Both the ohmic and RF cases had H-modes in the current ramp, except for
a few lower density shots which seemed to have locked modes.

Not unexpectedly, the strongest influence on li was the dI/dt. We did not
get a time to 1.2MA of about .37sec (50msec earlier than 1080108024). We
did a lot of fiddling with keeping dI/dt from dropping locally,
although the crossover was an unavoidable lag point, and we never
got around the positional thrash at that time either.

We tried reducing the current rise rate in segment 1 (t<0.1sec),
with mixed success. This may have been a mistake, and it may have
actually been better to increase it. The main point of reducing
the current at 0.1sec was to keep the dI/dt higher at later times.
Perhaps we should have delayed the oh1 crowbar until crossover, and
increased the power supply demand to extend the very fast ramp phase.

There were a lot of 1.35MA disruptions, with no obvious damage. As
the day wore on, disruption recovery became more of an issue, and
the pre-puff was reduced to ridiculous levels (7msec). There was only
one instance of two fizzles in a row, however. On the other hand,
some of the disruptions may have contributed to succeeding disruptions,
by providing new projectiles.

There was one IGOR failure (shot 30 happened twice) and one dud because
the OH's and EF1's didn't fire on the second try at shot 30. Yijun is
still having problems with the FFT computer hanging. Aside from that,
no power supply problems. No real cooling delays, partly because we
were taking so long thinking.

Scorecard:

    Duds/sys fails 1 (P.S. failure)
    fizzles 7
    plasmas 24 (12 disruptions)
   -----------           ==
    shots 32 (plus 1 that didn't count)

Shot#1: plasma attempt, going for 1.35MA like 1080108024
plasma full length. 3 ohmic H-modes
Some injections especially early
According to efits, li goes below 1 at 0.085sec, and nips back over at

Density still dips at .335, when it diverts, then it bounces mm or so before
finally staying diverted; crossover effect?
