MP473: LH Checkout and Conditioning Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: R. Granetz The purpose of this 1/2 day run will be to determine if the gasket changes in the LH launcher have helped improve the power handling of the system. The Parker seals on phase shifters 3, 11, and 15 have been replaced with copper gaskets, which seemed on bench tests to increase the power required to create an arc. Plasma setup: Overnight ECDC. Start with a repeat of 1080123025. LH Setup: Phase shifters at 90 degrees current drive direction, 0.5mm behind LH limiter. Start at 40kV beam voltage. 500ms shot starting at 800ms. Start with 85kW per klystron. If no arcing or glowing is seen on the LH video, move launcher to be flush with limiter. Increase power each shot in 20kW/klystron incriments up to maximum available without arcing. After an arc, reduce power by 25% then continue raising in 10kW incriments. After reaching maximum power, we will have two trial shots with different shapes to determine the density gradient in front of the LH launcher. |

Cryopump: Yes, but not needed until 1st MP is finished, which could be at
midday or later.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run plan:
am: This LH run will be specifically to check out the new gaskets. This
run has priority for today, and operation will not change over to the
2nd MP until this one is finished.
pm: The afternoon run will involve using ICRF to get long sawteeth,
coupled with HIREX spectra using lots of argon. The cryopump will be
used to help the plasma survive the large argon load.

| Session Leader Summary for 1080211
Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: R. Granetz The run started late due to the power glitch over the weekend which took several systems offline. The purpose of these experiments was to determine if changing the Parker Seals on the phase shifters to copper gaskets increased power handling of the Jungle Gym. LH power was increased from 85kW per klystron up to a maximum of 145kW per klystron, at which point arcs occured in the Jungle Gym between the Pant Leg and Magic T. Previous run days showed the power limit to be in the range of 140-150kW per klystron. Swapping the gaskets did not appear to greatly change the power handling of the launcher. Additional tests will take place on 1080215 with a new fixed phase shifter on column 15. |

Ince-Cushman (pm) Physics operator: R. Granetz The LH run was successful in the sense that we were able to show that the faulting problems at P_LH > 800 kW are not due to the gaskets. The afternoon MP was not run because of a problem in the J-port transmitters due to a water leak over the weekend. We decided to end the run early in order to get a head start on the ICRF repairs. This will probably take at least a day. The tokamak ran extremely well today, with no problems other than a minor EF1 fault after shot 01. Scorecard: 9 plasmas 0 dud 1 fizzle 0 power supply tests 0 no-power MDS shot cycles -------------- Total: 10 shot cycles |

| Feb 11 2008 09:46:30:260AM | 1080211001 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot at 85kW per klystron. Coupling not so great due to low density. Next shot will be 105kW per klystron and increase to nl_04=3.5e19. |
| Feb 11 2008 10:21:52:100AM | 1080211002 | Greg Wallace | Poor coupling and high reflections caused all trips. Will retry with a bit more density. |
| Feb 11 2008 10:27:13:057AM | 1080211003 | Greg Wallace | Again, poor coupling caused many trips. Next shot will increase nl_04 to 7e19 to improve coupling. |
| Feb 11 2008 10:42:14:153AM | 1080211004 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot with better coupling. B-side LH probes seem to be malfunctioning. Increasing to 125kW per klystron. |
| Feb 11 2008 11:02:07:837AM | 1080211005 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot at 125kW per klystron, although possibly a crossguide arc on vacuum side #22A at 1.22s. Next shot will move up to 145kW per klystron. |
| Feb 11 2008 11:18:18:580AM | 1080211007 | Greg Wallace | LH ran without trips, although looks like arcs on the vacuum side at .94s and 1.26s. Next shot will increase to 135kW per klystron. |
| Feb 11 2008 11:40:28:840AM | 1080211009 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |

| Feb 11 2008 09:32:12:637AM | Robert Granetz | Loaded all segments from shot 1080123025 (0.8 MA, 5.4 T, LSN). Reduced pre-fill pulse to 20 ms. | |
| Feb 11 2008 09:33:57:560AM | Robert Granetz | The start of the run will be delayed 30-60 minutes to accommodate a delay in getting the alternator up to temperature. | |
| Feb 11 2008 09:55:57:507AM | 1080211001 | Robert Granetz | Shot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.77 MA, 5.4 T, nl_04=3.2e19 m-2. P_LH=200 kW. Lots of fast electrons. EF1 had a fault after the shot. Next shot: raise nl_04 to 3.5e19 m-2. |
| Feb 11 2008 09:56:52:383AM | 1080211001 | Robert Granetz | After shot 01 we had a cell access for TCI and for Jim Terry, and a power room access to check on EF1. |
| Feb 11 2008 10:16:46:513AM | 1080211002 | Robert Granetz | Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. Had early hard x-rays (i.e. not due to LH). nl_04=3.3e19 m-2. P_LH=300-400 kW, but lots of faulting. Next shot: increase nl_04 to 4.0e19 m-2; increase pre-fill by 3 ms. |
| Feb 11 2008 10:28:41:980AM | 1080211003 | Robert Granetz | Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. nl_04=4e19 m-2. LH faulted badly. Still had early hard x-rays. Next shot: raise nl_04 to 7e19 m-2; add 1 ms to pre-fill. |
| Feb 11 2008 10:45:58:550AM | 1080211004 | Robert Granetz | Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. P_LH=600 kW, with no faults. There were still some early hard x-rays. Next shot: increase pre-fill another 1 ms |
| Feb 11 2008 10:55:07:940AM | 1080211005 | Robert Granetz | Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. Finally got rid of the early hard x-rays. P_LH=700 kW with no faults. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Feb 11 2008 11:13:28:140AM | 1080211006 | Robert Granetz | Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. LH faulted alot at the new gasket, which answers the primary question for today's run. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Feb 11 2008 11:22:23:460AM | 1080211007 | Robert Granetz | Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. P_LH=700 kW with no faults. Next shot: turn on 100 ms argon puff to test HIREX. |
| Feb 11 2008 11:37:48:120AM | 1080211008 | Robert Granetz | Shot 08 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.05 due to impurity radiation. It looks like a high-Z impurity (shows up on x-ray arrays), perhaps from LH grill. Next shot: no DPCS changes; might be last shot for today |
| Feb 11 2008 11:41:25:390AM | 1080211009 | Robert Granetz | Shot 09 -- Fizzle. disruption recovery? Next shot: drop pre-fill by 2 ms |
| Feb 11 2008 11:57:24:627AM | 1080211010 | Robert Granetz | Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. P_LH= 800 -> 750 kW. An impurity injection at t=1.19 s almost killed the plasma. End of run. |
| Feb 11 2008 11:57:59:157AM | 1080211010 | Robert Granetz | We have stopped tokamak operations for the day in order to begin repairs on ICRF transmitter 4. |
