| MP 523: Effect of Lower Hybrid Current Drive on Rotation Profile
The locked mode portion of the experiment was successful. Two steady locked mode discharges were obtained (Shots 1 & 2) with sufficient argon levels to provide a good wavelength calibration for Hirex-Sr. Due to a combination of problems with data acquisition, power supplies and lower hybrid electronics, we were only able to complete the co-current portion of the Lower Hyrbird phase scan. A total of 18 discharges were attempted, 13 of which generated a plasma. Below is a summary of the LH phases for which data was obtained. Phase shot 60 9 90 3 105 13 120 14 For a variety of reasons shots 6, 11, 12 & 17 did not couple any LH power. For the militant optimist, these can be thought of as a collection of fiducial shots. We will attempt to finish the MP during tomorrows run. |

Physop Summary for Thurs Feb 14, 2008.
MP#523 LHCD Rotation effect
SL: Ince-Cushman
PO: wolfe
EO: Parkin, Pfeiffer, Fitzgerald
We got half a day of running and half a day of sitting/running around.
Completed through the first phase scan of the run plan
with mech phase shifters at 90 (co-current). After shot 14,
the phase shifters were changed to counter-current drive, but
we only got one more plasma shot, and the LH failed to fire
on that one, so no data on the second phase scan. This experiment
to be continued (again), preferably after the SL makes an acceptable
offering to the plasma gods.
No real chanllenges for the physop today. The locked mode shots
were successfully accomplished (#1,2), and once we moved on
to the LH portion of the run the only seg2 change was a tiny
tweak on the target density. I made a number of adjustments
to PG4 to try to keep the runaways at bay, with some success
and no disasters. There were a few unusual events:
After shot#2 there was an oh2L fault indication that had to be
reset in the power room. On shot#3 the OH2L current went up
by nearly 1kA from it's normal value, and the Br0 was low
by 1mT, but the plasma went anyway. This did not recur.
Shot#5 was a dud because there was no gas puff. Apparently
the HV enable did not come on in PULSE. This did not recur.
Before shot#9 Alex had to go into the cell to reboot the computer
that runs the hirex_sr system because some Linux daemon was
running amuck and eating all its memory, preventing the arm
command from operating.
Shot#10 was a fizzle because the EF1's failed to commutate. Engineers
found a datalink error, which they reset successfully. This did not
recur.
After shot#14, during the cell access to change the phase shifters,
it was found that five fuses were blown in TF converter#1. Bill
Cochran determined the cause of the recent problems with this
converter and changed out a string of gate drive boards. This took
a couple of hours, including the PLC TF test to verify the supply
was working (#15).
Shot#16 was our first data system problem. INIT completed instantly,
without doing any actions. Took a no power shot.
Shot#17 was a good plasma, but the LH control system failed to fire.
It took Atma and Josh nearly two hours to sort this out. Once that
seemed to be working, we tried shot#18, but the data system hung
in INIT and we had to take another no power shot. The last shot,
taken after 17:00, was also shot#18, but second time was not the
charm. OH1 and the EF1's failed to fire, for unknown reasons.
No faults on the PLC or on the supplies. It was probably related
to the no power cycle on the first try at 18, but couldn't figure
out how.
Scorecard:
----------
No power shots 2 (but one didn't register)
Tests 1
Duds 2*(one no gas, one no OH1,EF1's)
Fizzles 1 (EF1's didn't commutate)
Plasmas 13*
========= ==
Shots 18+ 1 that didn't count
* Note that Ian's routine doesn't find the good shot on #17
or the dud on 18 because #16 was a no power that didn't have
data (or a tree), which his algorithm takes to be the end
of the run.

| Feb 14 2008 09:24:27:873AM | 1080214001 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Good locked mode discharge. Argon signal levels are lower than we would like and so we will repeat the discharge with a longer puff. |
| Feb 14 2008 09:50:08:233AM | 1080214002 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Another good locked mode discharge. Argon signal levels are sufficient and so we will move on to the Lower Hybrid part of the run plan. |
| Feb 14 2008 11:39:04:017AM | 1080214003 | Alex Ince-Cushman | This shot was a recreation of the LH trophy shot 1080123022. The LH induced a change in rotation of about -25km/s. For the next discharge we will turn off the LH and keep everything else the same. |
| Feb 14 2008 10:11:48:380AM | 1080214004 | Alex Ince-Cushman | There was a problem with Hirex-Sr data acquisition and so we will have to redo the shot. |
| Feb 14 2008 10:32:18:687AM | 1080214006 | Alex Ince-Cushman | This shot will provide us with a great LH on/off comparison with shot 3. We will now begin the LH phase scan starting at 60 degrees. |
| Feb 14 2008 11:34:48:243AM | 1080214008 | Alex Ince-Cushman | There was a problem with one of the Hirex-Sr computers which prevented data acquisition. A cell access was required to manually reboot the misbehaving computer. |
| Feb 14 2008 11:40:40:797AM | 1080214009 | Alex Ince-Cushman | The problem seems to have been resolved. The Lower hybrid ran well at 60 degree phasing and induced a -30km/s change in rotation. For the next shot we will go to 120 degrees. |
| Feb 14 2008 12:30:56:567PM | 1080214012 | Alex Ince-Cushman | The lower hybrid did not couple well. We will try going to 105 phasing and slightly adjusting the density and LH position. |
| Feb 14 2008 12:46:29:040PM | 1080214013 | Alex Ince-Cushman | The LH coupled well at 105 and induced a change in rotation of ~18km/s. We will now try going to 120 phasing. |

| Feb 14 2008 09:53:14:970AM | 1080214003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: Turn on seg2 (from 1080123022) and increase Argon puff from 125 to 200ms. LH will fire on this shot plasma with LH, full length Br0 looks back to normal. breakdown still ok OH2L current back down to ~26.0 Looks like rotation is seeing the effect. Next: repeat with no LH |
| Feb 14 2008 10:04:51:500AM | 1080214004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: repeat with no LH plasma full length, small runaway burst early. slight bounce in startup, need to start raising pg4. next: pg4 from 25 to 28ms |
| Feb 14 2008 10:19:57:017AM | 1080214005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: repeat with no LH (lost HIREX data on #4) pg4 from 25 to 28ms dud- No gas. No voltage on any piezo. No faults showing, everything was enabled. DPCS outputs are there in the interface room. |
| Feb 14 2008 10:28:31:183AM | 1080214006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: repeat with no LH (lost HIREX data on #4) pg4 from 25 to 28ms (if we get gas this time) plasma full length still some early runaways on the TV still bouncing in startup. Next: raise pg4 some more. Probably LH back on. |
| Feb 14 2008 10:45:07:500AM | 1080214007 | Steve Wolfe | ( Shot#7: repeat with LH pg4 from 28 to 32 ms Load at 14-Feb-2008 10:29:51.00 plasma full length, got LH no bounce, no early runaways; P0 is up to .075mTorr at t=0. breakdown is late, around 10ms again. Br0 looks ok; starts at 0. maybe I should drop it a little? Looks like Hirex lost data again. Next shot: repeat, leave startup alone and see what happens |
| Feb 14 2008 10:59:20:250AM | 1080214008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: repeat plasma with LH breakdown back at 5.8msec, no bounce, no early runaways. looks like hirex_sr is still losing data. That's a drag! Alex is going to have to arm his modules manually for each shot. Next: repeat |
| Feb 14 2008 11:21:20:307AM | 1080214008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: repeat Delay for a cell access to reboot the dec010 computer that runs the hirex_sr diags. It seems to be running a memory-bound process called zmd, which I find in google to be a SUSE-Linux/Novell thing called the Zenworks Management Daemon. There are flames about it and how to remove it on the web. |
| Feb 14 2008 11:34:23:023AM | 1080214009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: repeat plasma with LH bad bounce on startup, almost lost it. small runaway burst, not visible on scale of hards during and after LH. Hirex_sr has data, they'll move on to next phase in the scan Next: raise pg4 3ms |
| Feb 14 2008 11:52:22:503AM | 1080214010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10:pg4 from 32 to 35ms Load at 14-Feb-2008 11:35:23.00 fizzle. Probably raise pg4 too much. Or not enough, still seems to hit on the way out. Did EF1 commutate? NO they didn't. Next: Power room access to investigate |
| Feb 14 2008 12:14:41:407PM | 1080214011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: turn on dpcs_ftae2 for Jason (cleared with Alex) Load at 14-Feb-2008 12:03:23.00 No change in pg4, since I'm blaming the EF1 comm failure for the last fizzle. Andy and Gary report a data link malfunction that has been reset. Plasma, No LH? At least no hard xrays. Greg says high reflection at this phasing. Next: LH working? |
| Feb 14 2008 12:26:53:830PM | 1080214012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: repeat with better LH; they're moving grill in. plasma with LH. That looks better. No obvious current drive though. also no obvious rotation effect. Well, there were xrays, but the LH mostly retries and faults. Next: ? Try again? |
| Feb 14 2008 12:45:10:757PM | 1080214013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: raise nl04 from 3.0 to 3.6e19 drop pg4 from 35 to 34msec Load at 14-Feb-2008 12:31:39.00 plasma, lots more xrays that time. density overshot a little, got 4e19 instead of 3.6 If they complain I'll back it down; valve is barely opening. The extra density is coming from the LH when it stays on. This shot LH stays on at 400kW. This was a late breakdown again, 9msec fields look ok, rcur a little slow but no pause. Zmeter trace is looking noisy. Next: drop pg4 another msec? |
| Feb 14 2008 01:09:06:550PM | 1080214014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: pg4 from 34 to 33msec Load at 14-Feb-2008 12:42:22.00 plasma with LH breakdown back at 6msec, current rise looks ok. Next: switch to counter current drive. Cell Access. Meanwhile, there are at least five fuses blown in the TF converter #1. Will need to be changed out. |
| Feb 14 2008 01:22:09:487PM | 1080214014 | Steve Wolfe | There will be a delay of 45 minutes to an hour in order to repair the TF power supply. After that, there will be a PLC TF-only test shot before we resume plasma operation. Those who want to go to lunch, now would be a good time. |
| Feb 14 2008 02:24:13:963PM | 1080214015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: PLC TF-only test |
| Feb 14 2008 02:33:04:083PM | 1080214015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Back to trying for plasma with counter-current LHCD There has been a power glitch and/or UPS fault in the power room. One more Power room access to check/reset. |
| Feb 14 2008 03:02:10:663PM | 1080214015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Back to trying for plasma with counter-current LHCD It's been over two hours since we had a plasma shot. Vessel temp is now back up to 26C (had been down around 15C I think). I should probably do something to the gas, but since I don't know what, I won't. INIT didn't do anything before going green. This shot probably isn't going to happen. |
| Feb 14 2008 03:18:00:650PM | 1080214017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: Still trying for the first counter-current drive shot. No PCS changes. Shot#16 never happened, but Pat thinks this should be 17, so it is. Plasma ok, didn't look like lower hybrid ran. Next: Try again, we got nothing better to do. |
| Feb 14 2008 03:39:41:050PM | 1080214017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: Still trying for the first counter-current drive shot. No PCS changes. Cell Access for LH to reboot a crate |
| Feb 14 2008 04:53:13:090PM | 1080214018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: Still trying for the first counter-current drive shot. No PCS changes. Brock has permission to try to shoot a small pellet at 1.6sec. Over an hour since the last shot, LH control system problem resolved by Josh and Atma. Vessel back up to 29C. Except now it hangs in INIT!! NO POWER SHOT |
| Feb 14 2008 05:21:06:247PM | 1080214018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18 (2nd time): One last try, if Josh can get the data system to work again. No oh1 or ef1's = DUD. END OF RUN |
