| MP 523: Effect of Lower Hybrid Current Drive on Rotation Profile
The locked mode portion of the experiment was successful. The first shot of the day was a steady locked mode discharges with sufficient argon levels to provide a good wavelength calibration for Hirex-Sr. Shots 2-6 were spent scanning the LH phase from -60 to -120. We were able to couple LH power but did not drive any significant current (V_loop was unchanged). No change in rotation was observed for these discharges. This result suggests that is the LH current drive (as opposed to heating) that is responsible for the modification of the rotation profile. We then had a cell access to switch to the LH system to the 150-210 phasing range. Shots 7-11 were spent attempting discharges with LH phase ranging from 150-180. Unfortunately, we were unable to couple any LH power to these discharges. We then had another cell access to switch the LH System to standard phasing and spent the remainder of the day performing a current and field scan. The LH effect on central rotation and some key plasma parameters are summarized in the table below. Shot Bt Ip nl04 LH Power LH Phase DeltaV # [T] [MA] [1e20m2] [kW] [deg] [-km/s] Phase Scan 02 5.4 0.75 0.40 410 -90 0 03 5.4 0.75 0.40 480 -60 0 04 5.4 0.75 0.40 580 -60 0 05 5.4 0.75 0.38 580 -60 0 06 5.4 0.75 0.41 460 -90 5 12 5.4 0.75 0.50 470 60 12 13 5.4 0.75 0.45 575 60 35 14 5.4 0.75 0.41 620 60 40 Current Scan 16 5.4 1.00 0.50 640 60 20 17 5.4 1.00 0.50 620 60 20 18 5.4 0.75 0.50 620 60 20 19 5.4 0.60 0.47 620 60 20 20 5.4 0.75 0.55 640 60 15 21 5.4 0.75 0.45 625 60 35 Field Scan 23 4.4 0.75 0.45 620 90 35 26 6.3 0.75 0.50 620 90 17 The results of these scan can be summarized as follows: Phase Scan: The amount of rotation driven by the LH system was largest at a phase angle of 60 and decreased monotonically as the phase was increased from 60 to 120. No change in rotation was observed for negatively phased LH injection. It seems that the magnitude of the rotation change is determine by the amount of LH current driven and so the phase dependence should be seen as correlated not causal. Current Scan: The magnitude of the rotation change did not seem to depend strongly on current. However, the time scale on which the rotation profile evolved increased with decreasing current. Field Scan: The both the magnitude and time scale of the rotation modification seems to depend on magnetic field. The low field discharge (4.5T, deltaV = -35km/s) had a larger and faster change in toroidal rotation when compared to the high field discharge (6.3T, deltaV = -17km/s) |

| Machine ran well today with 100% startup and only minor tweaks in the gas. We had a couple of data system problems that cost us some time. Cell entries to change phaseshifters also cost some time, but was, of course, necessary. Lower hybrid system ran well, and Alex reported record rotation rate changes as seen on hirex-sr. Major difficulty for the phyop was trying to maintain the requested low densities (with little success). This might have been a good run to have the cryopump in operation.
On shot 24 we had a data system glitch --- no TF and magnetics data missing On shot 27 the PF breaker pulled --- bad fuses found in OH2L lower --- ended run |

| Feb 15 2008 09:44:32:297AM | 1080215001 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Good locked mode discharge. Argon signal levels are sufficient to provide Hirex-Sr with a good spectral calibration and so we will move on to the Lower Hybrid part of the run. |
| Feb 15 2008 09:46:17:957AM | 1080215002 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid was set to -90 phasing. About 400kW were coupled at a duty cycle of about 50% and no effect was seen on rotation. There was also no change in loop voltage or li. |
| Feb 15 2008 09:46:53:533AM | 1080215003 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid was set to -60 phasing. About 480kW were coupled at a duty cycle of about 50% and no effect was seen on rotation. There was also no change in loop voltage or li. |
| Feb 15 2008 09:51:12:307AM | 1080215004 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid was set to -60 phasing with 580kW of LH coupled cleanly. Still no effect on rotation, li or loop voltage. We will move on to 120 degree phasing. |
| Feb 15 2008 10:01:33:800AM | 1080215005 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid was set to -120 phasing with 580kW of LH coupled cleanly. No effect on rotation, li or loop voltage. We will go back to 90 degree phasing for one shot. |
| Feb 15 2008 10:26:58:270AM | 1080215006 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid was set to -90 phasing with 450kW of LH coupled cleanly. A slight change in rotation (deltaV ~ -5km/s) was detected. Note: this is the same direction as the change in rotation with positive phasing. The sign of the delat-loop-voltage did change, but the sign of the delta-li stayed the same. We will now have a cell access and move to -150 to 150 phasing. |
| Feb 15 2008 12:07:39:273PM | 1080215010 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Still no LH coupling at 150 degree phasing. For the next shot we will increase the density and move the LH launcher in slightly to try and improve coupling. |
| Feb 15 2008 12:25:09:750PM | 1080215011 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Still no LH coupling at 150 degree phasing. We will now have a cell access to switch the LH system back to the standard phasing range. |
| Feb 15 2008 01:54:22:773PM | 1080215012 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid phase to 60 degrees with ~470kW coupled. The density is a bit too high and seems to have reduced the magnitude of the change in rotation. There is, however, evidence of a substantial increase in the impurity confinement during the LH phase (argon density doubled!) |
| Feb 15 2008 01:56:28:980PM | 1080215013 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid phase at 60 degrees with ~470kW coupled. The density is still a bit too high but the rotation changed was large (~-35km/s). Again there was a substantial increase in argon density during the LH pulse, which is suggestive or an increase in impurity confinement. |
| Feb 15 2008 01:58:01:510PM | 1080215014 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Lower Hybrid phase at 60 degrees with ~600kW coupled. The density level was good. Very large change in velocity (~-40km/s). This is the new trophy shot for LH induced rotation. |
| Feb 15 2008 02:02:50:347PM | 1080215016 | Alex Ince-Cushman | The plasma current was raised to 1MA. Lower Hybrid phase at 60 degrees with ~600kW coupled. nl04 increased to 0.5. The change in rotation was reduced to ~-20km/s. It is not clear if this reduction was caused by the increase in density or current. It also worth noting that the time scale of the rotation modification was substantially slower on this shot than the previous shot. |
| Feb 15 2008 02:48:25:053PM | 1080215017 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 1MA, density a bit too high (nl04 ~ 0.5), LH at 60 degrees, coupling ~630kWs of power. A -20km/s change in toroidal rotation was observed evolving on a relatively slow time scale. Substantial increase in Argon density during LH pulse. |
| Feb 15 2008 02:58:44:893PM | 1080215018 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.75MA, LH at 60 degrees, coupling ~630kWs of power. A -20km/s change in toroidal rotation was observed. Rotaion profile evolution is faster than previous shot. |
| Feb 15 2008 03:01:07:297PM | 1080215019 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.6MA, LH at 60 degrees, coupling ~600kWs of power. A -20km/s change in toroidal rotation was observed. Looking at the last 3 shots, there is a clear trend in the rotation profile evolution time scale with current (i.e. faster evolution at lower current). |
| Feb 15 2008 05:34:48:853PM | 1080215020 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.76MA, LH at 60 degrees, coupling ~650kWs of power. A -15km/s change in toroidal rotation was observed. Density at was too high (nl04 ~0.56). |
| Feb 15 2008 03:26:50:237PM | 1080215021 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.76MA, LH at 60 degrees, coupling ~630kWs of power. A very large (-40km/s) change in toroidal rotation was observed. For the next discharge we will reduce Bt to 4T.
|
| Feb 15 2008 03:44:53:117PM | 1080215022 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.76MA, LH at 90 degrees and Bt set to 4t. Due to low density and low field, the LH coupling was poor. We will try again at higher field and density. |
| Feb 15 2008 05:36:17:463PM | 1080215023 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.76MA, LH at 90 degrees 650kW, Bt set to 4.5T. Density at 0.45. There was a -37km/s LH induced change in rotation. |
| Feb 15 2008 04:44:22:733PM | 1080215025 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.76MA, LH at 90 degrees 650kW, Bt set to 6.3T. Density at 0.45. No LH power coupled to plasma. Can be used as a fiducial shot. |
| Feb 15 2008 05:39:41:983PM | 1080215026 | Alex Ince-Cushman | Current at 0.76MA, LH at 90 degrees 650kW, Bt set to 6.3T. Density at 0.50. There was a -17km/s LH induced change in rotation. Comparing this high field shot to the low field shot (23) we see that magnitude of deltaV is smaller (-17 compared to -35). Also the rotation evolution is much slower for the high field discharge than for the low field discharge. |
