Session Leader Plan for second half of Tuesday, Feb 19, 2008
MP#526 "Accessing low density/collisionality H-mode with reduced particle
inventory"
SL: wolfe
PO: Marmar
The idea is to start from a low density L-mode ICRF heated discharge with as
depleted a wall as possible, well below the minimum of the H-mode threshold vs
density curve, and fuel UP to the threshold using either a small pellet or
small gas puff. Ideally this should be done as early in the discharge as
possible, after it diverts. We want minimal gas puff in the current rise
(segment 1).
Constraints:
half-day in the afternoon, so walls will be what they are. Fortunately it's
supposed to be LHCD in the morning, so there shouldn't be a lot of gas.
No time to ECDC in He though.
limited number of small pellets, depending on whether Brock reloaded the
injector over the weekend.
Goal: get an H-mode with nl04< 1e20/m^2 (nebar< 1.6e20/m^3) at Ip~1MA
Proposed plan:
Use the cryopump to help reduce neutral pressure, density, if available.
1. Start with low density 750kA plasma.similar to 1080214017. Move zcur up to
get ssep closer to DN, around -4mm (compare early plateau of 1080125012).
Reduce the pg3 puff in segment 1 to
keep the initial density down, and reduce nl04 gain to zero so we
don't puff in seg2. Turn on 3MW RF at 0.3sec, just after it diverts. (1-3
shots)
2A. Fire small pellet at .35sec (after start of RF) and see if it triggers an
H-mode. Probably will need to take a few tries to get the ICRF to match and
stay on. Observe midplane pressure, density during and after transition,
pedestal parameters. If tripping of ICRF by pellet is a problem, try timing
pellet just before ICRF pulse (or vice versa). If pellets aren't sufficiently
reliable (< 40%) move on to 2B. (3-5 shots)
2B. If pellet gets us into H-mode, continue from 3A or 3B. If not, try short gas
puff, starting .05sec after RF. Begin with pg3 (B-side main) for 10msec,
100V pulse. increase or decrease puff to find minimum gas input required
to trigger H-mode from below. (2-5 shots).
3A.If successful getting an H-mode (one way or the other), and it isn't
radiating away, then try increasing current to 1MA or higher after the
transition. Observe pedestal parameters, density evolution, etc. (4 shots)
If the H-mode is short and transient, and if the density is low or falling,
then go to 3B.
3B.Try to control the density and or radiation by puffing, turning the nl04
feedback back on at some low value to stay in H-mode. This may be necessary
in the pellet case if the walls are really unloaded, since the Li will not
recycle.(4 shots)
4. If there is time remaining, consider going to upper null for best
cryopumping, using the best trigger conditions for the LSN case.

MP473: LH Checkout and Conditioning Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: R. Granetz The purpose of this 1/2 day run will be to determine if the phase shifter changes in the LH launcher have helped improve the power handling of the system. The adjustable phase shifters from columns 3, 11, and 15 have been replaced with fixed length phase shifters. Plasma setup: Overnight ECDC. Start with a repeat of 1080123025. LH Setup: Phase shifters at 90 degrees current drive direction, 0.5mm behind LH limiter. Start at 40kV beam voltage. 500ms shot starting at 800ms. Start with 85kW per klystron. If no arcing or glowing is seen on the LH video, move launcher to be flush with limiter. Increase power each shot in 20kW/klystron incriments up to maximum available without arcing. After an arc, reduce power by 25% then continue raising in 10kW incriments. |

LH Setup: yes DNB: no Cryopump: Yes, but not needed until 1st MP is finished, which should be at about 1:00 pm. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run plan: am: This LH run will be specifically to check out the new fixed phase shifters. pm: The afternoon run will involve very low l-mode target density plasmas with significant ICRF power (\ge 3 MW). Small pellets and/or gas puffs will be used to attempt to get above the low-density h-mode limit, at least transiently, to access low density (nl_04 \le 1e20 m^{-2}) h-modes as possible AT targets. The cryopump will be used to keep the edge neutral pressure as low as possible. |

| Session Leader Summary for 1080219
Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: E. Marmar The purpose of this run was to determine if replacing the phase shifters in columns 3, 11, and 15 would increase the power handling of the launcher. Positive results from this morning show that replacing the phase shifters helps greatly increase the power handling. After arcing on column 9 at 135kW, we moved up to 170kW without arcing on any other klystrons. Column 5 arced at 180kW but other columns behaved normally. Shot 13 did not arc but did trip out due to high reflections at 185kW per klystron (excepting klystrons 3 and 5). This is a significant improvement over previous performance. 1MW net power has been achieved without arcing, although trips due to reflections did occur late in shot 13. |

SL summary for part 2 of 1080219 Shots #14-30 MP#526 Access to low density H-mode SL: wolfe PO: Marmar EO: Parkin, Fitzgerald We were successful in triggering H-modes by increasing the density above the low density limit, initially from fueling coming from the ICRF itself, and later by using short gas puffs from the pg3 piezo valve. In all cases the h-modes were elm-free and radiated away after 20 to 40msec, followed by repetitive L-H-L transitions. In these cases the density remained relatively low, below nebar~1.5e20, but only because the h-modes were so short. Typical d/dt(nebar) was ~7e20/m^3/sec. It is possible that if the radiation were reduced (boronization?) the final density might have saturated at an acceptable level, but it is hard to make that case based on today's result. We were unsuccessful getting H-modes using the LPI. The initial attempts, with injection after the rf, looked like fragments, with very small density increases. One case firing the pellet before the rf seemed to get a full size (small) pellet, with a density increase of 2e20/m^3 and resulted in a disruption. We were plagued with disruptions for all shots between 17-26. Some of these had brief H-mode transitions (21, 25, 26). Turning off J-port (later back on at only 0.5MW) seemed to fix these, most of which seemed to be associated with explosions from the lower left corner tile on the antenna (as seen from wide 2). Some of these shots also had locked modes early. The other major problem was runaways, which were very bad even on bounce-free startups. We never were successful in completely eliminating these after the first few shots of this experiment. On shots 28 and 29 saturating early runways seemed to prevent the transition at densities and powers that had been sufficient earlier in the day. On shot#30 the runways were not as bad, only 3e13 on neuts/hards at 0.5sec and we got multiple h-modes again. Interesting full shots were: 14 and 15 (multiple H-modes with "antenna fueling" (3MW) 16 L-mode with antenna fueling (3MW) nebar~7 to 9e19/m^3 27 L-mode with 30ms gas puff, 8e19, 2.4MW 28 L-mode with 40ms gas puff, 9.7e19, 2.4MW, early runaways 29 L-mode with 40ms gas puff, 1.1e20, 2.9MW, early runaways 30 H-modes with 40ms gas puffs,1e20, 2.9MW, less early runaways |

| Physop summary, 1080219
There were 2 half-day experiments planned for today, and progress was made on each. The machine ran quite well, including LH in the morning and ICRF in the afternoon. We also used the cryopump for all shots in the second-half of the run. Power supply issues: 2 shots were lost to power supply problems. On shot 1, OH2L had a problem, apparently left over from the last shot on 1080215, which took about an hour to fix. Shot 9 was lost when the EF3 breaker pulled out before t=0. A number of high power ICRF shots in the afternoon disrupted early, with the lower left corner of J-port glowing. After reducing the power from J-port, this problem went away. We also had some shots with serious early hard x-rays, which did not appear to correlate with bouncy startups. There were 2 fizzles. Scorecard: Plasmas 26 Fizzles 2 P.S. duds 2 total cycles 30 |

| Feb 19 2008 01:33:58:267PM | 1080219014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: Starting MP#526 (low density H-mode) Starting from 1080214017, change zcur and zxu and nl04 gain off. Got 3MW of rf, lots of short h-modes. Density is rising with rf, gets over 5e19 before h-mode start ssep is ~ -1 to -2mm. Next: delay rf to 0.4sec, move zcur down. |
| Feb 19 2008 01:46:05:373PM | 1080219015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: delay rf to 0.4sec, move zcur down 2mm two big bounces in startup, then almost lose it at .24sec marfe until after rf comes on. Density rises during runaway dump, current bite. Lots of h-modes, density never above nl04=1e20, but they are rising. next: try again without runaways |
| Feb 19 2008 01:54:45:477PM | 1080219016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: try again without runaways Better, no h-modes, 3MW steady, nl04 goes from 4 to 5e19 during rf Still one bounce in startup and some runaways. Next: go for a pellets |
| Feb 19 2008 02:09:55:900PM | 1080219017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: go for pellets, one at 0.5, another at 0.8 Lots of early runaways and a disruption. locked mode at .38 or so. Disrupts at .46, just after rf No bounce on this one, but has runaways anyway. May need to raise gas some. |
| Feb 19 2008 02:23:56:027PM | 1080219018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: try again disrupts at 1.2sec No dport, got two fragments locked mode at .66sec. Density ~2.5e19 too low. runaways start before rf. |
| Feb 19 2008 02:41:48:547PM | 1080219019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: Disrupts at 1.1sec No h-mode, pellets hardly noticeable on density, but trip the rf. nl04 is up to 4.5e19 Pg3 is at 20V for first 0.5sec, total around 7Torr-l next: put first pellet in at 0.35sec |
| Feb 19 2008 02:46:08:973PM | 1080219020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: try with a pellet before rf. fizzle. probably need to start dropping the prepuff |
| Feb 19 2008 03:04:22:837PM | 1080219021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: try again with a pellet before rf. For this shot, decrease pg4 from 65 to 60ms disruption at .65sec, no pellet (LPI gate valve closed) got a couple little H-modes as the density goes over 5e19 next: leave pellet at 0.35sec, add 10ms pg3 puff at 0.5sec |
| Feb 19 2008 03:10:12:390PM | 1080219022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: leave pellet at 0.35sec, add 10ms pg3 puff at 0.5sec and drop earlier pg3 from 20 to 10V. fizzle. |
| Feb 19 2008 03:30:14:867PM | 1080219023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: leave pellet at 0.35sec, add 10ms pg3 puff at 0.5sec and drop earlier pg3 from 20 to 10V. (combine 2a and 2b in one shot, it's getting late). short, disruption at .32 before anything, shortly after it diverts. next: put back the 20V on pg3 before .5sec |
| Feb 19 2008 03:44:24:713PM | 1080219024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: leave pellet at 0.35sec, add 10ms pg3 puff at 0.5sec. (combine 2a and 2b in one shot,it's getting late). another short shot, got to .36, I think maybe that was the pellet. It had runaways earlier, no bounce. PF breaker pulled after the disruption, looks like a problem on oh1 This one had a locked mode from very early. |
| Feb 19 2008 04:00:46:653PM | 1080219025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: turn off pellets, just use gas puff. Disrupts at 0.7sec, maybe see a little h-mode at 0.55, just after density rise that may be from the gas puff. next: gas puff up to 20msec |
| Feb 19 2008 04:13:35:153PM | 1080219026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: gas puff up to 20msec another disruption, earlier this time got the gas puff, very short h-mode, then it disrupts. J drops out, than comes back just before disruption. Next: reduce power to 2.5MW, raise puff to 30ms |
| Feb 19 2008 04:29:19:843PM | 1080219027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: gas puff up to 30msec full length, no h-mode. rf stays on to 1.2 density drops from 3.5 to 1.5e19 after rf turns off. gobs of runaways at the end. next: puff up to 40msec, extend rf to end of pulse. |
| Feb 19 2008 04:38:41:260PM | 1080219028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: gas puff up to 40msec lots of early runaways, saturating, puff got nl04 up to 6e19, but no h-mode. next: raise power back to 3MW |
| Feb 19 2008 04:54:43:713PM | 1080219029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: gas puff still at 40msec, put back 0.5MW of J Still early runaways. still no h-mode. These runaways seem to be killing it. next: put in a second puff at 0.9sec, increase seg1 puff to try to kill off runaways |
| Feb 19 2008 05:28:32:520PM | 1080219030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: put in a second puff at 0.9sec after runaways, increase seg1 puff to try to kill off runaways still some early runaways, but they went away sooner Got the h-modes back, following the gas puff, but they were once again multiple h-modes which die of radiation. This shot looks a lot like 14 and 15, except that the fueling to get above threshold is from the gas valve instead of from the antennas. Nebar is below 1.5e20 even right after the puffs, gets down to 1.1e20/m^3 before the second puff. During the repetitive h-modes, the rate of density rise is nebar_dot~7e20/m^3/sec and doesn't seem to change much over the 1sec of h-modes. The edge neutral pressure does go up at each puff, from .01mTorr before the first puff to .027 after, then to .034 after the second puff; there is a small pumpout between puffs. The ratiomatic pressure drops during each h-mode, then recovers. |

| Feb 19 2008 05:15:46:443PM | 1080219027 | Earl Marmar | reduce prefill puff to 50 msec (from 55 msec)
raise the segment 2 PG3 pulse, now 30 msec at 100, still starting at .5 s plasma, full length, (ICRF power reduced to 2.4 MW, j-port off) very serious hard x-rays after the ICRF turns off, through to the very end of the pulse synchrotron radiation shows up at the end of the ramp-down. |
| Feb 19 2008 04:39:52:370PM | 1080219028 | Earl Marmar | segment 2 PG3 pulse-puff to 40 msec (@100), still starting at .5 seconds
plasma full length serious hards early this time no h-mode |
| Feb 19 2008 04:57:40:420PM | 1080219029 | Earl Marmar | prefill puff to 55 msec (from 50 msec)
plasma full length still early hards no h-mode |
| Feb 19 2008 05:04:47:087PM | 1080219030 | Earl Marmar | increase prefill puff to 57 msec
increase segment 1 PG3 puff add second segment 2 PG3 pulse, 40 msec, amplitude 100, starting at .9 seconds plasma full length early hards, but not quite as bad looks like 17 transitions into and out of h-mode |
