Alfven Cascade studies with ICRH and LHCD

This is a continuation of experiments formerly run on 1070823.

We will be working within the revised goals of first establishing RSAE activity similar to that seen on 1040406 (the last really good set of results). Only once this has been accomplished will we begin to apply early LHCD to look for modifications of the early current density distribution.

To do this we will be looking at the variation of 3 main parameters:
1) initial ICRF timing
2) plasma position (inner wall vs. nose limited)
3) early dI/dt

A revised shot sequence plan is included below.

----------------------------
SETUP:

ECDC and bake at 60 C overnight.

equilibrium target: 1070823019

ICRF: all transmitters run-on by 8:30am
initial power waveform:
1)turn-on at 0.100 seconds
2)ramp to 1.5 MW by 0.125 seconds
3)flattop to 0.700 seconds
4)turn-off at 0.700 seconds

LH: 90 degree ideal phasing, normal field, current direction
initial power waveform:
no power initially, LH to be used later

Diagnostics:
1)PCI and magnetics digitized at 10 Mhz
2)Thomson and ECE required
3)cNPA requested

----------------------------
Shot Sequence:

001: Start with reproducing shot 1070823019 (without LH).

002-005: increase ICRF power to 3.0 MW. Move start time to 0.075 seconds.

006-009: move from inner-wall limited to nose-limited geometry

010-015: increase initial dI/dt as much as possible

016-022: Apply LHCD in optimized target plasma, starting with 90 degree phasing.

SOL turbulence w/ limited plasmas:
These few shots are being run to obtain turbulence data
from the outer midplane 2D view and the hi-shear view
simultaneously. The last half-run day given to this
experiment was 1070801, at which time the outer
midplane 2D view was not operational. Also, the GEM
turbulence code now has been run to simulate the previous
C-Mod run data, so there are specific predictions that
can be tested with data from the outer midplane view.

Setup:
NINJA filled with 10 PSI D2 for GPI ;
capillaries AB-lim and K-bolo will be used;
NINJA trigger at 0.85 so that gas hits at 1.0 s.

Load shot 1070801015, i.e. Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.8 MA,
NL_04=7x1019 m-2, inner wall limited,
kappa=1.2, outer gap=3.6 cm.
(NINJA puff will raise the density to ~9x1019 m-2.)
2-3 good shots

Load shot 1070801035, i.e. Bt ramped to 2.8 T at 1.0 sec,
Ip ramped to 0.4 MA, NL_04=4.3x1019 m-2, inner wall limited,
kappa=1.2, outer gap=3.6 cm.
2-3 good shots

MP #495a - Alfven Cascades with early ICRF and LHCD

We had 26 shots devoted to development of discharges with RSAEs during the current ramp. Manny of the eariler shots resulted in disruptions, this seemed to be mitigated by increasing the flattop target density. We spent the entire day trying to excite RSAEs with ICRF alone and never got to the LHCD portion of the experiments.

We attempted to reproduce the strong RSAE activity last seen on 1040406 (also 1030709), especially shot 018 from 2004. The 2004 geometry was strongly shaped early to be nose-limited and pulled away from the inner wall. Multiple attempts to reproduce this configuration were made though with limited success. Shots 1080222010, 024 and 026 showed the greatest RSAE activity, though still far below that observed in 2004.

parameters that were well matched: Bt, Ip, nel, Prf
parameters not so well mathced: D_alpha, right gap, *left gap*

We tried numerous times to pull the plasma off the inner wall earlier, EFIT shows a gap forming around 140ms in 2004 compared to 240ms in today's runs. We are left puzzled as to what exactly is the key ingredient for the excitation of RSAEs. Perhaps it all depends on getting the plasma off the inner wall?? Impurity measurements from Zeff suggest cleaner plasmas today, though the radiated power can be somewhat higher in the ramp-up phase.

We essentially achieved the discharges we
wanted, although the density was higher than
in the previous 5.4 T cases from 1070801 and
simulated by the GEM code, e.g. NL_04 was
~8.5e19 instead of 7.0e19 m-2. (We tried but
we couldn't get the density down.) The conditions for
the Bt=2.8 T case were as desired, i.e. the same as for the
shot simulated by the GEM code.

We got fast camera data from the outboard midplane
view on shots 1080222028-031. For shot 027 the
signal was too weak. In general the camera signals
were weak because the fiber bundles are browning,
so I had to do what I could to increase the signals,
e.g. increase the camera integration time to 8 usec for shots
028 and 029 and increase the puff plenum pressure
from ~490 Torr on shots 027-029 to 695 Torr on shots
030 and 031. Because of the increased puff, I turned the
puff at the lower Xpt OFF, so as not to increase the
density too much.

The best shots for 2D imaging at the outboard midplane
are:
*1080222029 - 5.4T, 0.8 MA, NL_04=8.7e19 -> 10.0e19 during data window; 8 usec integration time; 90.9 kHz frame rate; 6.3 T-l puffed
1080222030 - 5.4T, 0.8 MA, NL_04=8.6e19 -> 9.3e19 during data window; 4 usec integration time; 149 kHz frame rate; 6.3 T-l puffed
1080222031 - 2.9T, 0.4 MA, NL_04=4.1e19 -> 4.9e19 during data window; 4 usec integration time; 149 kHz frame rate; 6.3 T-l puffed
S. Zweben will have to evaluate whether these images are "good enough".

There is still the problem on the phantom camera (which in this run
was looking at the outboard midplane view) that a significant
brightness is needed to get a non-zero "count", i.e. a linear extension
of the brightness (x) vs counts (y) has a y-intercept that is significantly
less than 0.

A summary of the shots follows:
shot Bt pre-puff int. time frame rate max sig. AB lim puff
NL_04(e19) (usec) (kHz) (counts) (Torr-l)
1080222027 5.4 8.4 4 142 300 pix > 200 4.4
1080222028 5.4 8.7 8 90.9 ~600 pix > 1000 4.4
1080222029 5.4 8.7 8 90.9 215000 pix > 1000 6.3
1080222030 5.4 8.6 4 149 600 pix > 1000 6.3

MP495a Alfven cascade studies w/ICRF & LHCD -- Edlund
MP429 SOL turbulence in limited plasmas -- Terry

Most of the run today was devoted to mp495a. This run was very difficult from the standpoint of getting fast current rises, shaping, and disruptions related to the application of very early icrf at the 3 MW level. A lot of time was spent (with a great deal of help from Steve Wolfe) in getting the required plasma shape (1040406018). Since we could not simply load such an old shot, a lot of by hand tweaking was required. Prepuff gas was adjusted trying to get the early current rise as fast as possible.

Around 16:00 we switched over to mp429 without too much trouble. A tweak in rcur was required to increase the outer gap a couple of mm. However, the density rose considered more early in the discharge than it did on the reference shot (1070801015), I assume because of the strongly inner wall limited plasma.

The machine ran extremely well today from the standpoint of startup. We had two fizzles. One, shot 03, was caused by the physop forgetting to reduce the gas following a disruption. The last shot of the day, which was a DPCS repeat of the previous shot, fizzled around 20 ms when the plasma hit the wall (ciii injection).
