MP #500

Development of early diverted AT target plasma with ICRH, LHCD and current ramp

The goals of the MP are to first create an early diverted plasma (~150ms), and then apply ICRH and LHCD to further modify/sustain the off-axis current density peak. This will be monitored through the use of PCI and magnetics measurements of RSAEs and TAEs.

----------------------------

SETUP:

ECDC and bake at 60 C overnight.

equilibrium target: 1080222026

ICRF: all transmitters run-on by 8:30am
initial power waveform:
no-power initially

LH: 90 degree ideal phasing, normal field, current direction
initial power waveform:
no power initially

Diagnostics:
1)PCI and magnetics digitized at 10 Mhz
2)Thomson and ECE required
3)cNPA requested
4)Neutron and Hirex diagnostics to measure Ti

----------------------------
Shot Sequence:

First part of the day given to LH for phase shifter testing.

Following this, we will proceed with the following plan:
001-014: early diverted plasma development

015-018: application of early ICRH

MP473: LH Checkout and Conditioning

Session Leader: G. Wallace
Physics Operator: E. Marmar

The purpose of this 1/2 day run will be to determine if the phase shifter
changes in the LH launcher have helped improve the power handling of the system.
The adjustable phase shifters from all columns have been replaced with
fixed length phase shifters.

Plasma setup:
Overnight ECDC. Start with a repeat of 1080219013.

LH Setup:
Phase shifters at 90 degrees current drive direction, launcher flush with LH
limiter. Start at 50kV beam voltage. 500ms shot starting at 800ms.

Start with 120kW per klystron. Increase power each shot in
20kW/klystron incriments up to maximum available without arcing. After an arc,
reduce power by 25% then continue raising in 10kW incriments.

Summary.
Overall, the target plasma development was successful in the following sense:
We have succeeded in developing early diverted plasmas (diversion as early as 0.18 sec into the discharge, pulled away from the inner nose and inner wall and outer limiter) with up to 3.5 MW of ICRF power coupled, starting at 0.10sec, with 0.010sec ramprate to full power. The best shot was 28, which was near the vertical stability limit. Later shots kept disrupting due to vertical instability, hence we backed away form such extreme shaping. However, plasma kept disrupting after 0.20 to 0.30 sec. We proceeded injecting LHCD power up to 0.4 MW with 90 degree phasing in shots 30-34. We continued injecting LHCD at 0.3 MW and ICRF at 3.0 MW. Discharges terminated early due to disruption, but had several shots with LHCD (0.3 MW) and ICRF (3.0 MW) at early times (0.14 to 0.18 second) as potential target plasmas for AT development.
Meanwhile we looked for RSAE with PCI in all shots, but saw no evidence of RSAE, only TAE modes in some shots. The target plasmas were good, at 4.0 keV electron temperatures at 0.2 sec ,with sawteethy setting in at 0.24 sec, and target densities about nl_04 = 0.4. The hydrogen minority concentration was estimated to be about 3.5%, which should have been good to drive RSAE (there was no boronization prior to the run). Z_avg was around 4, not great but perhaps acceptable. It is not clear why we are not gettingg RSAE any more.
For Thursday afternoon's run we propose to interchange the timing of LHCD and ICRF. We will start injecting LHCD early on and raise the power until the arcing limit, pull back in the power and then inject ICRH.
End.

Summary for morning of 1080226: MP473 LH Checkout and Conditioning

Session Leader: G. Wallace
Physics Operator: E. Marmar

All of the remaining variable phase shifters in the LH launcher have now been
replaced with fixed phase shifters. The first 9 shots of the day were devoted to
testing the power handling of the new setup. The results indicate that the new
phase shifters are able to withstand higher power levels than the old units.

After starting at 120kW per klystron, we increased to 150 and 180kW without any
problems. The 180kW shot was a new record with sustained power of 1.03MW and no
signs of arcing.

After increasing to 210kW per klystron, we experienced circulator arc faults in
klystron 8 on shots 7 and 8. Decreasing the power level on klystron 8 to 180kW
did not make the problem go away. Shot 9 developed an arc between the FINT and
the Pant Leg split on klystron 9.

Shot 32 seems to have developed an arc above the FINT on klystron 7 at 0.179s.
Could be in the flex line, circulator, or anything else between the klystron and
the FINT. This was quite surprising as the power level was under 500kW on this shot.

The run went reasonably well. The first half was successful for the Lower Hybrid.
The second half, discharge development for early diversion, was partially successful, but by shot 29 we had pushed to the point that the plasmas were vertically unstable around 0.2 seconds.

There was a data system problem on shot 1, and TF cooling delayed first plasma. We also had fizzle problems. Shot 4 was a power supply dud, with almost no coils getting current.

Feb 27 2008 10:17:34:977AM1080226009Greg WallaceTripping on this shot seems to be caused by an arc in the waveguide switch between the INT coupler and the pant leg splitter on klystron 9.
Feb 26 2008 11:53:47:350AM1080226010Miklos PorkolabDiverted at 0.25sec. Will try a different setup suggested by Steve Wolfe

Feb 26 2008 01:56:53:787PM1080226019Miklos PorkolabEarly disruption at 0.3 sec.ICRF stayed on at 2.0 MW to the end.
Will raise ICRF power on next shot and start earlier.
Inner nose limited plasma until 0.18 sec, then puuled away at 0.20 sec and became diverted. Relatively good target plasma.

Feb 26 2008 02:31:28:797PM1080226021Miklos PorkolabGood shot, 2.5 MW, starting at 0.12 sec, with 0.1sec ramp.
Density 0.4. High impurity content (Z=7 ?).
Increase gas puff early on.
Feb 26 2008 02:55:53:410PM1080226022Miklos PorkolabGood plasma,RF trips early then recoveres.
Try to repeat shot to get steady ICRF. Power 2.7 MW, starting at 0.12 sec.
Zeff varies from 3-4 early time, much better than previous shots.
Saawteeth start at 0.26 sec.
Feb 26 2008 02:57:12:290PM1080226023Miklos Porkolab
Fizzle.
Feb 26 2008 03:11:08:950PM1080226024Miklos PorkolabICRF still trips early on, shot good otherwise, Prf=2.5MW.
Next, delay J port turn on to 0.13 sec, keep E port to 0.10 sec.

Feb 26 2008 03:20:53:577PM1080226025Miklos PorkolabFizzle.
Feb 26 2008 03:35:10:047PM1080226026Miklos PorkolabIt apperas that as the plasma is pulled off the inner nose at 0.18 to 0.20 sec, and becomes diverted, Te rises by 1 Kev from 3.0 to 4.0 Kev.
RF power stayed on at full power at 3.5 keV.
On next shot will pull power down and try to divert plasma sooner.
Feb 26 2008 03:51:43:923PM1080226027Miklos PorkolabGood, diverted earlier, at 0.19 sec, ICRF power is 3.0 MW, clean. Te =4.0 keV
Will raise RF power on next shot. Plasma shape is getting to be pretty good.
So far best shot from point of view of target plasma shape.
Feb 26 2008 04:04:11:407PM1080226028Miklos PorkolabGood, diverted earlier, at 0.18 sec, ICRF power is 3.6 MW, clean. Te =4.2 keV.
Plasma shape is getting to be pretty good.
So far best shot from point of view of target plasma shape.
We will turn on LHCD at 0.5 MW, 90 degrees phasing, at t= 0.18 sec.
and pull ICRF power back to 3.0 MW.
Feb 26 2008 04:17:59:627PM1080226029Miklos PorkolabDisrupted at 0.2 sec, ICRF at 3.0 MW, no LH power yet.
Feb 26 2008 04:27:06:810PM1080226030Miklos PorkolabVertically unstable.Disrupted at 0.2 sec, ICRF at 3.0 MW, LH power about 0.3 MW, injected at 0.18 sec. On next shot, will move LHCD it to earlier, 0.14 sec. Keep ICRF at 3.0 MW, starting at 0.1sec.
Feb 26 2008 04:39:13:743PM1080226031Miklos PorkolabVertically unstable.Disrupted at 0.2 sec.
Feb 26 2008 04:46:45:847PM1080226032Miklos PorkolabVertically unstable.Disrupted at 0.2 sec. ICRF power at 3.0 MW, steady.
Lower hybrid power turns on at 0.14 sec, at 0.3 MW, rises to 0.4 MW, and trips at 0.18 sec.
Feb 26 2008 05:40:52:940PM1080226034Miklos PorkolabShot lasted 0.3 sec before diruption. LHCD at 300 kW and ICRF at 3.0 MW was on during 0.14 to 0.18 second during ramp. However, no evidnece of RSAE modes on PCI.
