Development of early diverted AT target plasma with ICRH, LHCD and current ramp The goals of the MP are to first create an early diverted plasma (~150ms), and then apply ICRH and LHCD to further modify/sustain the off-axis current density peak. This will be monitored through the use of PCI and magnetics measurements of RSAEs and TAEs. ---------------------------- SETUP: ECDC and bake at 60 C overnight. equilibrium target: 1080222026 ICRF: all transmitters run-on by 8:30am initial power waveform: no-power initially LH: 90 degree ideal phasing, normal field, current direction initial power waveform: no power initially Diagnostics: 1)PCI and magnetics digitized at 10 Mhz 2)Thomson and ECE required 3)cNPA requested 4)Neutron and Hirex diagnostics to measure Ti ---------------------------- Shot Sequence: First part of the day given to LH for phase shifter testing. Following this, we will proceed with the following plan: 001-014: early diverted plasma development 015-018: application of early ICRH 019-022: applictaion of ICRH and LHCD at 90 degree phasing 023-026: vary relative timing of LHCD/ICRH and increase power |

MP473: LH Checkout and Conditioning Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: E. Marmar The purpose of this 1/2 day run will be to determine if the phase shifter changes in the LH launcher have helped improve the power handling of the system. The adjustable phase shifters from all columns have been replaced with fixed length phase shifters. Plasma setup: Overnight ECDC. Start with a repeat of 1080219013. LH Setup: Phase shifters at 90 degrees current drive direction, launcher flush with LH limiter. Start at 50kV beam voltage. 500ms shot starting at 800ms. Start with 120kW per klystron. Increase power each shot in 20kW/klystron incriments up to maximum available without arcing. After an arc, reduce power by 25% then continue raising in 10kW incriments. |

| Summary.
Overall, the target plasma development was successful in the following sense: We have succeeded in developing early diverted plasmas (diversion as early as 0.18 sec into the discharge, pulled away from the inner nose and inner wall and outer limiter) with up to 3.5 MW of ICRF power coupled, starting at 0.10sec, with 0.010sec ramprate to full power. The best shot was 28, which was near the vertical stability limit. Later shots kept disrupting due to vertical instability, hence we backed away form such extreme shaping. However, plasma kept disrupting after 0.20 to 0.30 sec. We proceeded injecting LHCD power up to 0.4 MW with 90 degree phasing in shots 30-34. We continued injecting LHCD at 0.3 MW and ICRF at 3.0 MW. Discharges terminated early due to disruption, but had several shots with LHCD (0.3 MW) and ICRF (3.0 MW) at early times (0.14 to 0.18 second) as potential target plasmas for AT development. Meanwhile we looked for RSAE with PCI in all shots, but saw no evidence of RSAE, only TAE modes in some shots. The target plasmas were good, at 4.0 keV electron temperatures at 0.2 sec ,with sawteethy setting in at 0.24 sec, and target densities about nl_04 = 0.4. The hydrogen minority concentration was estimated to be about 3.5%, which should have been good to drive RSAE (there was no boronization prior to the run). Z_avg was around 4, not great but perhaps acceptable. It is not clear why we are not gettingg RSAE any more. For Thursday afternoon's run we propose to interchange the timing of LHCD and ICRF. We will start injecting LHCD early on and raise the power until the arcing limit, pull back in the power and then inject ICRH. End. |

| Summary for morning of 1080226: MP473 LH Checkout and Conditioning
Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: E. Marmar All of the remaining variable phase shifters in the LH launcher have now been replaced with fixed phase shifters. The first 9 shots of the day were devoted to testing the power handling of the new setup. The results indicate that the new phase shifters are able to withstand higher power levels than the old units. After starting at 120kW per klystron, we increased to 150 and 180kW without any problems. The 180kW shot was a new record with sustained power of 1.03MW and no signs of arcing. After increasing to 210kW per klystron, we experienced circulator arc faults in klystron 8 on shots 7 and 8. Decreasing the power level on klystron 8 to 180kW did not make the problem go away. Shot 9 developed an arc between the FINT and the Pant Leg split on klystron 9. Shot 32 seems to have developed an arc above the FINT on klystron 7 at 0.179s. Could be in the flex line, circulator, or anything else between the klystron and the FINT. This was quite surprising as the power level was under 500kW on this shot. |

| The run went reasonably well. The first half was successful for the Lower Hybrid.
The second half, discharge development for early diversion, was partially successful, but by shot 29 we had pushed to the point that the plasmas were vertically unstable around 0.2 seconds. There was a data system problem on shot 1, and TF cooling delayed first plasma. We also had fizzle problems. Shot 4 was a power supply dud, with almost no coils getting current. Summary plasmas 23 fizzles 8 duds 1 tests 2 Total cycles 34 |
