MP#478, Effect of non-resonant n=2 error fields on plasma rotation. SL: Howell, Wolfe PO: Marmar Background This is a continuation of the session 1070621, looking for evidence of rotation braking from non-resonant n=2 error fields. In that session, we did not see any clear evidence of braking, but we were limited to 2MW of reliable RF power. Theory suggests that the braking should increase with increasing ion temperature, so the main aim of this session is to maximise the ion temperature and look for braking effects. This is a half-day session. Plan The reference pulse is 1070621010, but trying for a steady 4MW RF power (or max available) from 0.5-1.5 sec. Bt=5.4T, Ip=800kA, nl_04=1.e20. A-coil setup: +Dtop +Dbot +Jtop +Jbot (non-standard n=2). B21_PROJ feedback OFF. Key diagnostics include: Standard magnetics Interferometer D-alpha HIREX_Sr (for rotation and ion temperature measurements, Argon required) ECE (For Te profile) Fast Magnetics (To get rotation information from sawtooth precursors) Thompson (For electron density profile) NINJA CXRS (for edge rotation) A Boronisation will have been performed before the run, so we shall start the run by establishing a steady H-mode which might take a few shots. Once this has been achieved, repeat with full A-coil current to look for braking effects. If clear braking is observed, perform an scan to see the effect of A-coil current on braking. If no clear braking is observed, try increasing the plasma current to get a closer match to the q95 of JET, where clear braking is seen. A further possibility is a cell access to change the polarity of the A-coil current, but this is not expected to have a large effect. Shot plan ========= 1. Establish H-mode shot, as 1070621010, no A-coil. Aim for steady RF around 4MW from 0.5sec (if possible, 0.6 otherwise) to 1.5sec [4-8 shots]. 2. Repeat with full A-coil current (+Dtop +Dbot +Jtop +Jbot) starting at 0.5sec 3a. If successful, scan A-coil current to look for I^2 dependence on braking. 3b. If unsuccessful, increase to 1MA plasma current. Establish shot with no A-coil, then look for braking with full A-coil. If we cannot get a good H-mode at 1MA, try 900kA. |

| We started operating at 1.30 pm, and continued Tuesday's run (Feb 26th).
Since we were not successful on Tuesday to see RSAE at high ICRF power, today we switched the order of power injection between LHCD and ICRF. The first few shots were used to condition the machine for low density shots (cleaning off the inner divertor nose ?) and avoid vertical stability (started with reference shot 1080226024 which was nearly stable and was weakly limited by the inner nose). After starting at shot 1080228020 today, the shots nicely cleaned up and evolved in 3-4 shots to be diverted by 0.20 sec and ready as target shots for LHCD with 90 degrees phasing, injection starting at 0.12 sec. Typical powers were 0.4 MW and were limited by sudden edge density drops in front of the antenna around 0.24 seconds. Subsequently, turned on J port antenna with injection starting at 0.16 seconds and raised the power from 1.0 MW to 1.5 MW and then injected an additional 1 MW with E port antenna for a total power of 2.5 MW. Saw cascades only with J port ICRF at 1.0 MW on shot 1080228028. When raised the ICRF power, the cascades did not show up. Then we swithed the LHCD phasing to 120 degrees, hoping to drive more edge current to maintain RS plasmas. On the last shot we were successful, in that the LHCD stayed on from 0.20 to 0.25 second around 400 KW, and we injected 800 KW ICRF (from J port antenna only). (The early LHCD terminated around 0.18 sec, then the retry was successful starting at 0.20 sec). This was the best shot of the day, and the year, and only the second shot with RSAE today, which lasted for the duration of the LHCD, and perhaps 10 ms longer ! Many modes showed up, the best data yet, although individual cascades did not extend in duration up to the TAE frquency, perhaps due to the low ICRF power. The current ramp was somewhat slower than in earlier shots, although up to 800 KA at 0.19 sec, then a very slow ramp to 1.0 MA at 0.5 sec. It is not clear how significant this was. The conclusion is that we should try to continue the experiments at 120 degree LHCD phasing, but try to couple the LHCD power reliably. If we could reliable inject LHCD say 800kW with 120 degrees phasing for 0.5 second duration and then apply ICRF, we should be able to produce RSAE reliably. We will write a new miniporposal for this. |

| Summary for morning of 1080228: MP#478, Effect of non-resonant n=2 error fields on plasma rotation.
SL: Howell, Wolfe PO: Marmar The session started at 8:55 and continued until 1pm. The first 12 shots were an attempt to get a steady 4MW of RF power to get a nice H-mode target. RF was slow to condition, probably exacerbated by a high neutral pressure. RF started to get much better when the NINJA was turned off. Shot 12 had a reasonable H-mode with only a few trips, so we turned on the A-coils on shot 13. Unfortunately, there was no discernible difference seen on the HIREX_SR rotation. Next, we raised the plasma current to 1MA to get q95 closer to the JET comparison case. RF was much better at this plasma current. Shots 14-17 were marred by an injection which kicked us out of H-mode during the shot. Shot 18 was a very nice H-mode with a perfect 4MW RF through the shot. The A-coils were on from 0.5-1.1 seconds and the rotation was seen to increase when the A-coil was turned off. Shot 19 was a repeat with no A-coil, but unfortunately the same effect was seen on the rotation. Detailed analysis of the rotation still needs to be carried out, but initial signs point to us not seeing any braking from the n=2 fields. |

| The machine ran well today, and progress was made on both Mini-Proposals.
Other than a data system/PLC problem on the first shot, and a power supply dud on shot 23, all startups were reasonable. Scorecard: Plasmas 33 duds 1 data hangs/no power 1 total cycles 35 |

Better. RF reached 4MW with less trips. RF stops around 1 sec though. Plasma stays in H-mode until 1.05sec. |
| Feb 28 2008 11:02:47:737AM | 1080228010 | David Howell | Establish H-mode shot as 1070621010, no A-coil. Aim for steady RF around 4MW from 0.5sec to 1.5sec. Try for better RF.
A bit better. RF at 4MW until 1.2sec, but still many trips. Plasma stays in H-mode until 1.3sec, maybe an injection at 0.72sec? |
| Feb 28 2008 11:16:06:393AM | 1080228011 | David Howell | Establish H-mode shot as 1070621010, no A-coil. Aim for steady RF around 4MW from 0.5sec to 1.5sec. Try for better RF.
A lot better. Much nicer RF, 3-4MW until 1.3sec, fewer trips. Plasma stays in H-mode until 1.5sec, still an injection at 0.92sec? Repeat to try to get rid of the injection. Hopefully next shot will be our good reference shot. |
| Feb 28 2008 11:28:48:127AM | 1080228012 | David Howell | Establish H-mode shot as 1070621010, no A-coil. Aim for steady RF around 4MW from 0.5sec to 1.5sec. Try for better RF.
Use this as our reference shot. 4MW RF until 1.25sec, just 3 trips. Plasma stays in H-mode until 1.5sec, no injection. Next shot, turn the A-coil on full from 0.5sec, look for rotation braking. |
| Feb 28 2008 11:46:19:850AM | 1080228013 | David Howell | Turn the A-coil on full from 0.5sec, look for rotation braking.
Got a pretty good match on the RF, but saw no change in the rotation on HIREX_SR. As there is little scope in increasing either the RF power or A-coil duration go to the 1MA pulse. |
| Feb 28 2008 11:54:28:077AM | 1080228014 | David Howell | Establish 1MA H-mode shot. No A-coil.
Very steady RF. Got into a steady H-mode, spoiled only by an injection. Repeat. |
| Feb 28 2008 12:06:26:090PM | 1080228015 | David Howell | Establish 1MA H-mode shot. No A-coil.
RF trips and we drop out of H-mode, both at just after 1sec. |
| Feb 28 2008 12:20:50:263PM | 1080228016 | David Howell | Repeat. Turn the A-coil on full from 0.5sec.
Dropped out of H-mode at 0.92sec, almost a match to shot 14. If anything the rotation is higher in this shot than in the shot without the A-coil! |
| Feb 28 2008 12:34:46:147PM | 1080228017 | David Howell | Repeat. A-coil on full from 0.5sec, ramp down to zero between 1 and 1.1sec.
Got another injection that kicks us out of H-mode. Shot is not steady enough to conclude anything about the effect of the A-coil. |
| Feb 28 2008 12:44:42:193PM | 1080228018 | David Howell | Repeat. A-coil on full from 0.5sec, ramp down to zero between 1 and 1.1sec.
Finally got a shot without an injection. Rotation slows when the A-coil is on and recovers when the A-coil is turned off. Repeat with no A-coil to see if this effect is due to the n=2 fields. |
| Feb 28 2008 01:06:26:790PM | 1080228019 | David Howell | Repeat. No A-coil
No injection. Rotation behaviour is similar to shot 18, so it looks like the increase in rotation in shot 18 was not due to the A-coils being turned off. |
| Feb 28 2008 01:50:51:140PM | 1080228020 | Miklos Porkolab | Ended in disruption.Ended about 0.22 sec.
