MP #505c Study of sawteeth in low-density plasmas and associated RSAEs We will be looking for the excitation of q=1 RSAEs during the sawtoothing phase of the plasma discharge. The plasmas we we be looking at are low density and L-mode with moderate to high ICRH power. An upper single null configuration will be attempted to maximize the effectiveness of the cryo-pump for maintaining a steady density. A series of parameter scans in the toroidal field, plasma current, and ICRH power will take the larger portion of the day. If time remains, we will investigate the use of secondary current ramps in the flattop portion of the discharge. Late addition to the MP: the strongest RSAEs were formerly excited prior to the 3rd sawtooth crash. This timing was also very close to the time the plasmas went diverted. I would like to investigate the effects of changes in edge geometry on the core modes by alternating between USN and LSN multiple times throughout the shots. ------------------------------------------ Setup: ECDC and bake at 60C overnight. equilibrium target: 1080103008 ICRF: all transmitter RUN-ON by 8:30am initial power waveform: 1)turn on at 0.20 s 2)ramp to full 2.0 MW by 0.21 s 3)flattop to 0.75 s 4)turn off at 0.75 s LH: no LH required for this run. ICRF on from 0.2 - 0.75 s. The purpose of the run is to investigate sawteeth at low density with ICRF heating to drive reversed shear Alfven eigenmodes near q=1. We will compare USN and LSN magnetic configurations and scan the toroidal field from 4.8 T to 6.0 T in 0.15 T steps. Then, we will choose the best field and do a plasma current scan from 0.6 MA to 1 MA. Finally, we will also do some fast Ip ramps from the flattop phase. See the session leader plan for more details. |

| MP #505c - Studies of low density sawteeth and assciated RSAEs
The run was difficult at first, many disruptions plagued us up until shot 014. Keeping the density above 0.5 (nl_04) seemed to be critical. Additionally, a series of ICRF tests on shots 015-017. The results of these tests showed that J is the likely cause of the high levels of impurities. The remainder of the run was performed without J running with D&E (J was run after D&E shut off, and seemed for the most part fine). A power level of 3.0 MW was maintained through most of the day. The central electron temperatures reached a maximum of about 4 keV, significantly lower than last summer. The RSAE excitation was also not as strong, suggesting that the pressure or pressure gradient terms may be strong modifiers of the RSAE DR. We did not complete the entire Bt scan as outlined, though we covered the range 5.25-5.95T. Maximal excitation occured at 5.7T (compare shots 031 and 032, among others). The current scans showed that lower currents also seemed to be better. This seems at first reckoning to be counter-intuitive as a larger edge q should give rise to a smaller interior volume for these modes and hence larger damping. The higher field is likely showing that the off-axis heating is more effective at generating the fast-ion population. Why the lower current is better will need more consideration. The RF was turned on early in the ramp to get hot plasmas at the beginnning of the sawtoothing phase. A side effect of this was the excitation of some early TAEs, and in shot 026, RSAEs, similar to the 2004 data. This was done at 5.7 T and 600 kA, conditions that we have not looked at in former RSAE studies. ---------------------- total shots: 32 disruptions: 003, 009, 010, 011, 012, 013, 017, 018, 019, 026, 029, 030 system fault: 006 test: 007 |

| It was a pretty good run although we had some difficulty with disruptions at low density and high ICRF power. The machine ran quite well with only one computer glitch on shot 6 just before President Hockfield's visit, which was followed by a no power test shot while she was in the control room. All of the other shots had plasma, except perhaps for shot 1 which only reached 88 kA briefly. The startup was surprisingly robust despite many disruptions. The cryopump ran well.
The ICRF ran well, but did lead to disruptions at high power and low density. The data suggest that J port was mainly responsible for the impurity increases that led to the disruptions at low density. When operating above nl04 = 6 x 10^19 m^-2, the disruptions were much less frequent. Alfven cascades in the current rise, TAEs, and q=1 RSAE's associated with sawteeth were all observed on both PCI and sometimes on the magnetic pick-up coils as well. So, despite the large number of disruptions, some quite valuable data on the modes were obtained that will be useful for Eric Edlund's dissertation. There were 32 shots, 29 plasmas, 1 fizzle, 1 computer fault, and one test shot.
