| Run Plan for 1080305 MP#531 ""Scaling of edge flow-shear profiles with plasma current and magnetic field"" Goal Investigate the sensitivity of edge plasma flows and pressure gradients to changes in plasma current and magnetic field in ohmic L-mode plasmas. In particular, investigate the magnitude of the flow velocities associated with the ExB shear layer near the last-closed flux and whether it varies with q95. Approach Run a set of lower single null, ohmic L-mode plasmas with four combinations of flattop plasma current and toroidal field: (0.4 MA, 2.8 tesla), (0.4 MA, 6 tesla), (0.8 MA, 2.8 tesla) and (0.8 MA, 6 tesla). These will give us a q95 variation of between 2.5 and 10. For each current/field combination, run three different normalized plasma densities (n/nG). Carefully record edge plasma profiles and flow velocities up to the separatrix with three scanning probes (WASP, ASP, FSP). Also record poloidal phase velocities with GPI systems and edge pressure gradients inside LCFS with edge Thomson scattering. Plan Start by reloading shot#1080124017 (0.8 MA, LSN, with TF rampdown) and make the following changes: - ramp down TF as early as possible to 2.8 tesla and hold for flattop - set Ip = 0.4 MA - set NL04 = 0.25e20 - fill 10 psi D2 in NINJA plenum - No cryopump - Enable argon for HIREX systems - No ICRF or LHRF A. Ip = 0.4 MA, Bt = 2.8 tesla (after ramp down) - 8 shots Optimize scanning probe targeting. Step through plasma densities of NL04 ~ 0.25, 0.4 and 0.55e20 B. Ip = 0.4 MA, Bt = 6 tesla - 6 shots Change to 6 tesla TF flattop. Step through plasma densities of NL04 ~ 0.25, 0.4 and 0.55e20 C. Ip = 0.8 MA, Bt = 2.8 tesla (after ramp down) - 8 shots Reload a shot from step ""A"" and set Ip to 0.8 MA. Step through plasma densities of NL04 ~ 0.5, 0.8 and 1.1e20. Introduce NINJA gas puffs for inner CXRS and GPI systems. D. Ip = 0.8 MA, Bt = 6 tesla - 6 shots Change to 6 tesla TF flattop. Step through plasma densities of NL04 ~ 0.5, 0.8 and 1.1e20 |

| Run Summary for 1080305
MP#531 ""Scaling of edge flow-shear profiles with plasma current and magnetic field"" This was a very productive run, producing a load of good ohmic L-mode discharges (> 30) with all the parameter variations that were requested in the run plan: (0.4 MA, 3 tesla), (0.4 MA, 6 tesla), (0.8 MA, 3 tesla), and (0.8 MA, 6 tesla) with at least three different plasma densities for each combination. The primary focus was on obtaining high-quality profile data from our three scanning probes (ASP, FSP, WASP) up to the separatrix. In particular, we were interested in obtaining good poloidal velocity profile measurements across the shear layer. We managed to do this on many shots, although we did have one casualty - the NE electrode on the WASP got toasted on shot #23, poking into a plasma that it should not have been. Also the SW electrode started to act up as usual by the middle of the run, developing an intermittent open condition. A principal point of interest was to see if the jump in poloidal velocity across the shear layer changed with q95 as we changed q95 from ~3 to 9.5. But, at first glance, no substantial change in the velocities was evident. However, the width of the shear layer does seem to track the width of the pressure profile, getting shorter with increasing plasma current. This trend seems to reproduce the one noted earlier on the 1080124 run (ohmic H-modes). NINJA puffs were enabled on shot #21 and beyond, allowing Alex Graf and Kenny to record CXRS flow data. The HIREX systems also recorded toroidal rotation data throughout the day, which should be quite interesting given all the variations in plasma conditions. We attempted to run a lock-mode toroidal-velocity calibration shot at the end (#36) for Alex and John, but naturally this one fizzled. It was the only fizzle of the day. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Quick shot log 01-LSN, Ip=0.4, Bt=3.0, NL04=0.28, no probes scanning 02-LSN, Ip=0.4, Bt=2.8, NL04=0.23 SP @ 1, 1.2, 1.4 ASP(+0), FSP(-5), WASP probes scanning far out 03-LSN, Ip=0.4, Bt=2.8, NL04=0.24 SP @ 1,1.2,1.4 ASP(+7), FSP(+1), WASP probes still far from separatrix 04-LSN, Ip=0.4, Bt=2.8, NL04=0.23 SP @ 1,1.2,1.4 ASP(+10), FSP(+3), WASP FSP- should be deeper 05-LSN, Ip=0.4, Bt=2.8, NL04=0.23 SP @ 1,1.2,1.4 ASP(+11), FSP(+6), WASP first ASP scan is deep 06 disrupted at 0.28s 07-LSN, Ip=0.4, Bt=2.8, NL04=0.24 SP @ 1,1.2,1.4 ASP(+10), FSP(+6), WASP targeting is good. Physop Summary for Wednesday, Mar 5, 2008
MP#531 Scaling of edge flow-shear profiles
with plasma current and magnetic field
SL: LaBombard
PO: wolfe
EO: Parkin, Fitzgerald, Dekow
This was a good run. We completed all of the SL_PLAN scans A-D
(28 cases took 35 total shots).
Ramping TF down to -72800A got us to 2.8T by ~0.9sec. This was used
for the case A scan at 400kA. For Case C at 800kA we had to
raise the field to 3.2T (-85000A) in an attempt to avoid ohmic H-modes.
The attempt to reduce the overshoot on the low current (400kA) shots
was not completely successful, but it didn't cause any harm. I did
end up finding a relatively robust startup without bounces using
an RCUR offset=1800 (from shot#11 on). The pg4 puff went as high as
37msec and as low as 13msec.
There was initially a problem with the outer gap targeting,
and I found I had better control by increasing the rcur gain to 10
after 0.8sec. This was used for shot#3-35.
There was some difficulty getting through q95=3 when we went to
scan C (800kA, B~3T), which was overcome by some combination of
density and current ramp programming.
There were a number of early disruptions caused by injections, mostly
not associated with the probe pokes. In at least one case, JR reported
a large iron injection.
After shot#26 Brock started shooting Li pellets at EOF, resulting
in some disruptions and some successes (and some with no pellet).
The main run plan was completed on shot#35. Shot#36 was supposed to be
a repeat of 1080215001 (segment 3) for a locked mode calibration for
HIREX_Sr. We took it just after 5:00 and got the only fizzle of the
day. Probably should have dropped pg4 to 11msec, but the startup
on 35 looked fine. The five o'clock fizzle plus the Cushman curse
is a fearsome combination.

| Mar 5 2008 09:50:17:653AM | 1080305003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: Increase RCUR P gain from 6 to 10 from 0.8sec move rcur in from .6565 to .655 after 1.0sec PG4 from 26 to 30msec plasma, runaways late, probably slideaway, no bounce. Right gap looks somewhat better. disrupts at 1.85sec I see the probe pokes on the hard xrays. |
| Mar 5 2008 10:05:20:013AM | 1080305004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: Drop the OH1 voltage between .1 and .2sec from 250 to 150V in seg2 Pg4 from 30 to 32msec plasma, slip-sliding away, startup ok, still overshooting early on Ip but maybe a little less. Not sure it's worthwhile to play with it any more. Next: no changes (unless SL asks) |
| Mar 5 2008 10:19:03:113AM | 1080305005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: no PCS changes, probes are cleaning up and poking deeper plasma, runaways looked worse, but startup still looks clean. One injection at about 0.3sec Next: benign neglect? |
| Mar 5 2008 10:38:49:350AM | 1080305006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: RCUR out by 1.5mm after 1sec (back to .6565), rampdown a little faster to avoid q problem Early disruption at 275msec. Bouncy startup and early runaways again. Looks like it may lose it vertically, no sign of a problem on shot 5. Next: raise pg4 from 32 to 34msec |
| Mar 5 2008 10:47:57:710AM | 1080305007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: raise pg4 from 32 to 34msec (risk a post-disruption fizzle, trying to get rid of bounce). plasma still bounced, but survived, got smaller gap after 1sec could probably stand more gain earlier, Brian is happy with it though, so leave it alone. q95 is now above 4 through rampdown, which gets below 100kA. Next: raise pg4 again |
| Mar 5 2008 11:01:38:803AM | 1080305008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: raise pg4 from 34 to 37msec NL04 from 2.5 to 4.0e19 starting the scan plasma, still has a bounce. P0 is up to 0.1mTorr, I don't think I want to go any higher. Left gap gets smaller around 1 at oh1 crossover, which moved earlier. Probes are changing timing, repeat. |
| Mar 5 2008 11:09:54:837AM | 1080305009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Seg1 rcur offset from 1000 to 1500 plasma still bounces, but a little later 15ms. runaways better, but it almost lost it. Next: put rcur offset back to 1000 |
| Mar 5 2008 11:22:43:960AM | 1080305010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: Seg1 rcur offset from 1500 to 1000 Otherwise, repeat for improved probe data. plasma, 2 bounces and still made it; this startup is really getting ratty. |
| Mar 5 2008 11:38:16:773AM | 1080305011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Seg1 rcur offset from 1000 to 1800(?) nl04 from 4 to 5.5e19, last point on the scan plasma no bounce, no runaways. Clean startup. crossover is 50ms earlier. probe timing may be off. Next: repeat |
| Mar 5 2008 11:49:29:023AM | 1080305012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: pg4 from 37 to 36ms, backing off. repeat at 2.8T/400kA/5.5e19 plasma, no bounce, no runaways, a bit slower move out, slower burnout. Next: go to 6T, same Ip, Nl04 |
| Mar 5 2008 12:02:16:697PM | 1080305013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: TF limit from 165 to 175kA limit TF program from -72800 to -167000 pg4 from 36ms to 33ms, backing off. nl04 still at 5.5e19, ip 400kA plasma, no bounce no runaways. q95~9 marfes in rampdown. Next: repeat with probes adjusted. |
| Mar 5 2008 12:16:39:180PM | 1080305014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: pg4 from 33 to 30ms. repeat with probes adjusted. plasma no bounce no runways. Funny burst on zmeter at 25msec? Probing claims traces "look different". Probably going to want another repeat. |
| Mar 5 2008 12:28:08:460PM | 1080305015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: No PCS changes plasma full length, no bounce, no runaways. next: down to 4e19 |
| Mar 5 2008 12:40:00:430PM | 1080305016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: nl04 from 5.5 to 4e19; no seg1 change. (remembered to change seg2 title to 6T this time). disrupted at 1.05, something came in at 0.85sec and stuck around. Big bite out of the current, never recovers. Density was still above 5e19, gas off after .45sec Next: reduce pg4 and try again. |
| Mar 5 2008 12:51:02:490PM | 1080305017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17:pg4 from 30 to 25msec, reduce nl04 before .4sec plasma full length, density 4.2e19, pokes visible on Halpha no bounce no runaways. Next: probably repeat |
| Mar 5 2008 01:04:12:350PM | 1080305018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: repeat, still pulling back the A-port probe. No pcs changes. plasma full length, no bounce, no runaways, density ok. Next: down to 2.5e19 |
| Mar 5 2008 01:17:15:727PM | 1080305019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: nl04 down to 2.5e19. No seg1 changes. plasma full length, nl04=3.3e19, no gas after 0.5sec; should have reduced nl04 gain before 0.5 to keep it from puffing at all. no bounce no runaways. Next: repeat |
| Mar 5 2008 01:33:33:040PM | 1080305020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: nl04 gain from 8 to 4 before 0.5sec; no seg1 changes plasma, nl04 between 2 and 3e19, pokes now visible on halpha and hard xray. next: ready to move on? |
| Mar 5 2008 01:52:54:303PM | 1080305021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Back to 2.8, 800kA, 4e19. TF back to -72800 nl04 to 4e19 Ip from 400 to 800kA (600 at 0.1sec) seg2 oh1_volt back to 250 before .2sec seg1 oh1_volt to 250 before 0.1sec seg1 Ip gain off TF invert time from 1.6 to 1.85sec to let the current come down NINJA may puff at 1.4sec This is aiming for q=2.3 Disrupts at .51sec, pf breaker pulled after disruption. disrupts right at q95=3., Bt=3.9 |
| Mar 5 2008 02:10:31:570PM | 1080305022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: IC_ef4 to 2000 from 1000 (seg2),slow down ip rise to 800 @.5sec pg4 from 25ms to 23msec in seg1 for disruption recovery Another early disruption, almost the same time. Let's back off on this. |
| Mar 5 2008 02:24:19:960PM | 1080305023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: nl04 gain back up to 8, program 7e19 before .7sec copy current waveform from 1080124017 TF up to -78kA (3T) PG4 to 21msec plasma full length, but got ohmic H-modes; win one, lose one (Brian didn't want H-modes). nl04=6e19 at 0.8sec, q95=2.7, at L-H Raise Bt by 10% |
| Mar 5 2008 02:36:06:960PM | 1080305024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: TF from -78kA to -85kA, drop nl04 back to 4e19 at 0.6sec Raise initial Ip point in seg2 to 550kA@0.1sec, .2sec point to 650 Still got H-modes starting at 1.1, Bt=3.2T, q95=2.9 Nl04 still up at 6.9e19, puff off after .45sec, except for one small puff. Try to drop nl04 to keep it out of H-mode |
| Mar 5 2008 03:02:56:017PM | 1080305026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: Nl04 program to 8e19, second point on scan C. This will probably have H-modes, but try anyway. Brock will shoot Li pellet at 1.5sec H-modes, and plasma disrupted at the pellet. Got 1 1/2 scans before first H-mode at 1.08sec (oops) Next: drop pg4, either repeat or go to 1.1e20 |
| Mar 5 2008 03:14:47:940PM | 1080305027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: pg4 from 21 to 19msec nl04 to 1.1e20 (third point on scan C). plasma full length, no H-mode, some dithers between 0.7 and 1.2sec density rises at 1.2sec with gas hard off (NINJA?) No pellet. |
| Mar 5 2008 03:28:58:283PM | 1080305028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: repeat with earlier density flattop at 1.1sec drop at 1.2sec instead of 1.4 Disrupts at .32sec, looks like an injection. No obvious cause. Next: drop pg4 and try again. |
| Mar 5 2008 03:39:55:377PM | 1080305029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: drop pg4 from 19 to 17msec plasma to 1.55sec (pellet). nl04 looks ok. No h-modes, maybe still some tiny dithers. Next: On to Part D? |
| Mar 5 2008 03:54:35:347PM | 1080305030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: drop pg4 from 17 to 15 msec TF to 167kA, ramp down from 1.5sec (back to 6T, begin scan D) nl04 still at 1.1e20, Ip=800kA Another early disruption, .58sec, something big comes in at .54 and takes a bite out of the current. Halpha saturates for 40msec. Next: try that again |
| Mar 5 2008 04:03:59:250PM | 1080305031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31: drop pg4 from 15 to 13 msec (how low can I go?) TF at 167kA, ramp down from 1.5sec (back to 6T, begin scan D) nl04 still at 1.1e20, slow down rise just a bit, Ip=800kA plasma full length, small blip on density at 1.03sec, Brian says it's not a probe. Next: repeat, poke probes deeper. |
| Mar 5 2008 04:15:57:800PM | 1080305032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#32: repeat. No PCS changes. By George, I think he got it. plasma full length, pellet at the end of flattop. no injection (well, maybe small ones around .5 sec). Next: continue density scan D? |
| Mar 5 2008 04:32:18:563PM | 1080305033 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#33: nl04 to 8e19 (second point on scan D) plasma full length, but had a top marfe? Injection at 1.1sec seems to cause the marfe. Doubles the loop voltage to >2V, but survives. Something comes off the fsp on second scan. Next: drop nl04 to 5e19 (last point on scan) |
| Mar 5 2008 04:44:20:703PM | 1080305034 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#34: nl04 to 5e19 (third point on scan D) plasma full length with pellet and pokes. nl04 looks like 6e19 instead of 5; gas is off after .43sec. Pokes visible on halpha again. |
| Mar 5 2008 04:56:57:050PM | 1080305035 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#35: repeat the 8e19 case, Brian will try not to cause a marfe this time. plasma, big injection on 3rd scan, but no marfe. Looks good, complete's scan D. Next: locked mode shot for Ince-Cushman |
| Mar 5 2008 05:08:41:423PM | 1080305036 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#36: Import segment 3 from 1080215001 into seg3 (locked mode calibration shot for HIREX_Sr) seg2 off seg 3 on. This will be the last shot of the run. Five o'clock fizzle strikes again; only one of the day! END OF RUN |
