MP 537: Momentum impulse from rapid SSEP changes. The purpose of this run is to capture the effect of the 'edge event' generated when the plasma is moved from LSN to USN (or vice versa) in a very short amount of time (~10ms). Recent results imply there is a propagation of momentum in the core region. The measurements in the pedestal region show some indication that this edge event might not propagate through the pedestal but rather cause a re- arrangement of flows there. Requested systems: *Cryopump available *Enable NINJA with 10psi D2, for diagnostic gas puffing. *Scanning probes; WASP *Argon for Hirex family. *DNB request: at least 6A, 30/15ms ON/OFF, starting at 0.5s. A. Ip = 0.8MA nl_04 = 8.0e19m-2, lgap = 10mm Basic shot from 1080227032 Load whatever startup works best. Additional changes to this shot are: Move first sweep (LSN to USN) to 0.7s. 2nd sweep (USN to LSN) at 1.0s still but increase to 10mm shift in 10ms. Add 3rd sweep at 1.3s back to USN. Maintain 1cm gap. Compensate for shift in Lgap at sweeps with a forced gap reduction/increase? Cryopump on to maintain density during sweep. Expected 6-8 shots to get all the systems together. Once this shot is achieved to satisfaction, repeat for scanning probe participation. Likely 3 shots to get probes plunging correctly to capture flows before the sweep, then another 3 shots for flows after the sweep. B. Ip = 0.8MA nl_04 = 8.0e19m-2 lgap = 7mm Repeat A. but put the IW gap at 7mm rather than 10. The location that shows little velocity change with the ssep sweep might be fixed in space or a fixed distance from the separatrix. (2 shots or 7 w/ probes) C. Ip = 0.8MA nl_04 = 8.0e19m-2 lgap = 13mm Similar to A, B. Complete gap scan. (2 shots or 7 w/ probes) D. Ip = 1.0MA nl_04 = 8,0e19m-2 lgap = 10mm Drive hotter plasmas to explore the effect of pedestal temperature on the momentum transport. (8 shots including probes.) E. Ip = 0.6MA nl_04 = 8,0e19m-2 lgap = 10mm Similar to D. (8 shots including probes) If there's still time explore changing the momentum by changing the density: F. Ip = 0.8MA nl_04 = 1e20 m-2 G. Ip = 1.0MA nl_04 = 1e20 m-2 |

| Tough crowd today for this run. We managed a struggling start after a busted capacitor. Two shots disrupted from a too quick sweep back to LSN (004,006) and were each followed by fizzles. Shot 009 was the first full length plasma that served as the target for Part A. After this the probes were activated and finally saw a shot at 015. By the end we'd measured the LSN (021) and the USN (029) with probes. All the rest of the shots but 026 were fizzles.
The run was successful at incorporating the DNB CXRS and the Mach probes into the sweeping ssep experiment. The flows were seen to change at the first sweep and generally recover their original velocity at the 2nd sweep. The marfe on shot 026 supressed flow modification during the return to LSN. Despite a disappointingly small amount of actual plasmas, there was likely enough data collected to make some statements about flows and flow profiles. Also we will have a better understanding of what to look for when this run is repeated for the other parts. Shot summary: 1-3: no power. 004: Plasma disrupts after 1.0s 006: Plasma disrupts after 1.0s 009: Plasma - No probes. 015: Plasma - Probes in LSN portion. Could be deeper 021: Plasma - Probes in LSN portion. Satisfactory 026: Plasma - Cryopump off, Probes in USN portion. MARFE. Unsatisfactory. 029: Plasma - Cryopump on. Beam off. Probes in USN portion. Marginally satisfactory. All other shots to 031: Fizzle. |

| This was a very painful run. We spent two hours in the morning fixing a shorted cap in the ef1 commutation bank and then testing the bank. Finally on shot 04 we got our first plasma which disrupted at 1.05 s. The next plasma, shot 06, also disrupted around 1 s, probably because of the speed of the 2nd jog programmed for 1.0 s. We increased the jog time from 10 to 20 ms, and when we got a plasma on shot 09, it ran into rampdown. However, we continued to have problems the rest of the day with startup. A couple of shots were lost because the cryopump was not running effectively, and the prefill pressure was too high. Other shots may have been lost because the dnb was firing into the wall during fizzles. During plasma discharges light and injections around the location where the dnb hits the wall during fizzles could be seen. We plan to fix this problem on Monday by reinstalling the fizzle detector for the dnb. It was generally very difficult to adjust the prefill without either having too much gas or too little. This effect may have been caused by variations in the cryopump pumping speed. Adjustments in rcur were made on shot 29 that may have helped keep the startup plasma off the wall over a larger range of prefill pressures.

Some velocity changes seen on puff views. DNB CXRS does not see change in velocity. CXRS on main ion sees velocity change. Next shot. Single probe plunge before 1st sweep. Slow 2nd ramp to control plasma after. |
| Mar 14 2008 11:54:01:383AM | 1080314008 | Kenneth Marr | Post disruption fizzle. |
| Mar 14 2008 12:37:31:680PM | 1080314009 | Kenneth Marr | Good shot. Clear changes in velocity on Hirex Sr. and DNB and GPI CXRS in core. Interesting indications at the separatrix and SOL.
Next repeat for probe participation. |

Next shot: Repeat shot. Move probes to USN time. |
| Mar 14 2008 04:39:32:743PM | 1080314025 | Kenneth Marr | Plasma. Cryopump off. Marfe in the lower divertor area affect flows in the USN configuration. Possibly interesting but not quite what we want. Probe measurements limited by marfe.
Next shot: Repeat shot with cryo on. |
| Mar 14 2008 04:57:43:120PM | 1080314029 | Kenneth Marr | Plasma. Good shot. I believe we've hit the key points with the probes. Unfortunately we are almost out of time. We'll creep halfway into part B and reduce the IW gap. Probes timidly poking at it since we can't take a target and then a real one.
Next shot: Reduce the inner gap by 3mm. |
| Mar 14 2008 05:19:20:243PM | 1080314031 | Kenneth Marr | Final fizzle of the day. Thanks to all. |
