Run Plan for 1080319

MP#532 ""Sensitivity of edge pressure gradients, toroidal rotation and flow shear
profiles to magnetic x-point topology""

Goal
Using our extensive new set of edge and core profile/flow diagnostics, we wish to map
out in detail the sensitivity of edge plasma pressure gradients and flows in ohmic
L-mode plasmas as the magnetic topology is varied from lower single null (LSN) to double-null
(DN) to upper single null (USN).

Approach
Vary x-point topology shot-to-shot in small steps from LSN through DN to USN while
recording the evolution of edge pressure gradients, toroidal and poloidal flow profiles
in otherwise identical plasmas. We will perform these topology scans at three different
line-averaged densities, spanning the range of edge collisionalities where edge flows and
toroidal plasma rotation are known to vary with x-point location.

Key Diagnostics: All scanning probe systems (ASP, FSP, WASP), edge Thomson, gas-puff imaging
(diodes and fast camera), inner-wall CXRS (deuterium and boron with NINJA puff), core CXRS,
outer CXRS (boron with DNB pulses), HIREXs.

Plan
Start by reloading shot#1080314029 (0.8 MA, 5.4 tesla, LSN-USN toggle shot based on ZCUR)
and make the following changes:
- Increase RXU by 1.3 cm (this makes the USN a mirror-image reflection of the LSN)
- Set ZCUR to be flat at the value it had in shot#1080314029 at 0.6 seconds,
minus 0.2 cm (The idea is to dial-up a flat SSEP value of -0.6 cm.)
- Set inner and outer gaps to be flat at the values they had in shot#1080314029 at 0.6 seconds
- Set NL04 = 0.8e20 m^-2
- Fill NINJA to 10 PSI D2
- No cryopump
- No ICRF
- No LHRF
- Yes DNB
- Enable argon puff, 150 ms pulse length starting at 0.3 s

A. NL04 ~ 0.8, SSEP ~ -6 mm - 3 shots
Adjust x-point programming and gaps as necessary to optimize scanning probe
targeting. Introduce NINJA gas puffs for inner CXRS and GPI systems.

B. NL04 ~ 0.8, SSEP scan - 10 shots
Perform a SSEP scan with otherwise fixed conditions. Step through a series of
shots with SSEP values of -0.6, -0.3, 0, +0.3 and +0.6 cm, using suitable ZCUR
programming. Optimize scanning probe plunge depths to resolve shear layer. As ZCUR
is changed, the probe targeting and gaps are likely to change also. So, we will probably
need a few repeat shots here.

C. NL04 ~ 0.5, SSEP scan - 8 shots
Change NL04 to 0.5x10^20 m-2 and repeat SSEP scan. We should have a better
idea of the probe targeting based on the results from ""B"".

D. NL04 ~ 1.1, SSEP scan - 8 shots
Change NL04 to 1.15 x10^20 m-2 and repeat shots with LSN SSEP values of -0.6
and -0.3 cm. Change NL04 to 1.1x10^20 m-2 and take a shot or two with SSEP = 0.0 cm.
Finally, Change NL04 to 1.05x10^20 m-2 and do the remaining SSEP values of +0.3 and
+0.6 cm. (Note: these small tweaks in NL04 compensate for a trend of slightly higher
SOL collisionality in USN compared to LSN at high densities.)

Run Summary for 1080319

MP#532 ""Sensitivity of edge pressure gradients, toroidal rotation and flow shear profiles
to magnetic x-point topology""

This was a productive run. By shot#6, we had attained the desired ohmic L-mode discharge
with good probe targeting, top-bottom symmetrical X-points and ZCUR control of the magnetic balance
(SSEP). First, a careful shot-to-shot scan of SSEP was performed for NL04 ~ 0.85e20, covering nominal
SSEP values of -0.6, -0.3, 0, +0.3 and +0.7 cm. Scanning probes (ASP, FSP, WASP) were
operated at 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 s, hitting the separatrix or slightly inside on many
discharges. Before moving on to the next plasma condition, we made sure that the probes
had cleanly recorded the parallel and perpendicular plasma flow velocities. NINJA
D2 gas puffs on the inner and outer SOLs were timed to overlap with the last probe
scan (1.2s) and continue to the end of flattop (1.5s). Jim Terry reported good
signals levels on GPI diode systems. Alex Graf also obtained some excellent D CXRS
flow data on the inner SOL during the gas puffs, varying with the SSEP parameter.
On shot#21 we started repeating the SSEP scan for NL04 ~ 0.5e20. The DNB operated very
reliably all day. Rachael reported that the outer CXRS diagnostic was optimized
during the run and started to obtain good toroidal rotation measurements after
shot#20. The second SSEP scan at NL04 ~ 0.5e20 went faster, making use of probe
targeting information from the first scan. But, by the time we got to start the
third SSEP scan (NL04 ~ 1.1e20), the shot count was 29 and we were running out of
time. Anyway, we managed to do a quick and dirty SSEP scan (-0.6, 0.1, +0.75 cm) in
6 shots (of which 2 were fizzles), relying on educated guesses for the probe targeting.
We were lucky. We didn't toast any probes and actually got some good profiles out of it.
We may want to revisit this parameter range some time in the future, picking up the intermediate
points as well. The NL04 ~ 0.8e20 ASP probe data showed the usual modulation of parallel
flows near the separatrix with topology, being more co-current directed for LSN.
John Rice reported good HIREX signal levels all day and did some preliminary mapping of the
variation in toroidal rotation with SSEP and density.

A quick look at the parallel and perpendicular velocity profile data from the probes, as
it flew by during the run, revealed some clear effects that will be interesting to investigate
in more detail. The location of the perpendicular velocity shear layer clearly changes
in going from LSN to USN and is perhaps associated with the location of the
secondary separatrix. Plasma density appears to affect the shear layer magnitude
and location as well. Pressure gradients near the separatrix are reduced in going
from LSN to USN, an effect that we have seen before, but now mapped out in more detail.
This pressure gradient variation may connected to the shear layer behavior - stay tuned.

MP#532 Sensitivity of edge pressure gradients, toroidal rotation and flow-shear profiles to magnetic x-point topology.
SL: LaBombard
PO: wolfe
EO: Parkin, Pierson, Byford

This was a pretty successful run. We got through all steps A-C and
a skeleton of the high density scan (step D). The machine ran pretty
well, although we did have some fizzles in the afternoon.

The initial target setup took a little longer than expected. Getting
the FSP target steady required ramping zxl down during the shot,
and as a result the zcur had to be ramped to get ssep more or less flat.
Possibly could have done better by resurrecting the old FSP control,
but I didn't want to take the time to re-develop this. I actually did
load the predictor and controler on wire 11 as a monitor, but didn't
actually turn it on.

The LSN target condition was established at shot#7. We then proceeded to
the -3mm case (ref #8 or 9), a DN case (ref#12), a +3mm case (ref#16),
and a +6mm case (ref#20). This completed scan B at 7.5e19 (programmed).

Scan C at 4.5e19 used these starting equilibria, with density and seg2
PG3 puff reduced. Also we added an outer gap scan for JT at the end of
the flattop, after the last probe scan.

An abbreviated Scan D at 1.05 to 1.15e20 was done on shots#29-34, getting
data only at the -6mm, DN, and +6mm cases. Shots 30 and 32 fizzled. Not sure
if shot#34 (+6mm) actually gave useful data because it marfed.

The DNB ran successfully all day, with the fizzle interlock enabled so it
was prevented from firing into the wall on fizzles and disruptions. One
less thing I can blame for the five fizzles today. I suspect that the
consecutive fizzles on #14,15 may have been due to a cooling-induced
leak, but can't prove it since the RGA had died last night. The last two
fizzles followed high density rampdown disruptions, and may have been
preventable if I'd lowered the puff enough, although the lowest puffs did
lead to bouncers with some runaways.

The argon puff was reduced to 100msec after shot 10, and the HIREX guys
didn't complain loudly enough for me to hear.

There were no data system hangs all day. There was a power room entry
to check fuses after self-power circuit fired on a disruption (#3), but
no other power system problems. We did have some cooling delays, especially
in the morning, and in the afternoon had a couple of delays because
the ross relays needed to be cycled multiple times to get rid of bad
coil resistance readings. Otherwise, smooth sailing.

Load from 1080314029
Import seg1 from 1080305003
In seg2:
Remove zcur sweep, change value from -.013 to -.015
CLEARIN flat at -.002 after .428sec; copy to wire 10,11
RXU from -.015 and higher to 0.000 from 0 to 1.5sec
Note that RXL goes to .00013 at 1.031sec, leave it alone.
 NL04 from 8.5 to 8.0e19
*** Change clearin observer rxa,zxa ***
Reset first and last rows to clear at t=-3.0, +3.0
middle row to default (zxa=-.39375) at t=0.
 call all of them.
Note that when we go to upper null cases I'll need to change the middle one.

Notice that the seg1 I loaded is a 400kA startup with Ip control on,
which is NOT what I wanted. Back to the drawing board.
Load seg1 from 1080313001 (Ron's run with Brian last week)
This has 20msec pg4 puff, RCUR=1000,Br_0=0,EF4=-1340.
Raise pg4 from 20 to 25msec

Mar 19 2008 09:07:28:700AM1080319001Steve Wolfe
Shot#1: Aiming for ssep=-6mm, nl04=0.8e20
plasma to 1.8sec, no bounce, no runaways.
ssep=-6mm, right gap gets pretty small early in pulse.
Current not at flattop until .5sec, that's the program.
FSP target is rising about 10mm between .7 and 1.5sec; needs to be flatter.

Mar 19 2008 09:32:12:450AM1080319002Steve Wolfe
Shot#2: Note that ZXL error is +5000 and rising
Program zxl ramp down by 5mm (-1mm to -6mm)
Increase zxl gain from 8 to 15 at 0.6sec
Cooling is taking an extra 10 minutes because of a cell access for LH (DG).

plasma full length. Brian's getting bold, he poked FSP without looking
at how much I changed the target.

ZXL is still high by 2000-3000m rising slowly through flattop.
Still pulling away. EF4 is up by 500A, EF2L is more negative 200A.

Next: program more down on ZXL, change IC_EF4

Mar 19 2008 09:52:49:043AM1080319003Steve Wolfe
Shot#3: Increase ramp on zxl to -11mm at 1.5sec
IC_EF4U from 0 to +1000A. Note that SSEP is now sweeping
from -6mm to -2mm, presumably because I'm moving zxl.
Ramp zcur down by 4mm to compensate (guess)
Add FSP to wire 11, no gain. Note controller is stale.
It doesn't seem to know about fsp control?????

Shot went before Pat said Entering Pulse. Disrupted at 0.76sec
Something comes in at .7sec. Looks like it comes down from the top.
Probably unrelated to previous changes.

Next: pg4 from 25 to 22 and repeat

Mar 19 2008 10:03:43:357AM1080319004Steve Wolfe
Shot#4: pg4 from 25 to 22.
Put ALLNAMES=['PSI0','RCUR','ZCUR','CLEARIN','RXL','ZXU','RXU','FSP']
into controller keyword for wire 11 (FSP). Still with zero gain.
plasma full length. No FSP this time.
FSP target seems to be fairly steady according to the predictor, rising
maybe 3mm? And SSEP is still rising too by 2mm.

Drop zcur by 2mm at eof.

Mar 19 2008 10:18:03:933AM1080319005Steve Wolfe
Shot#5: Drop zcur by 2mm to -.021 at eof.
Leave zxl ramping from -1 to 11mm from .6 to 1.5
Load complained about fsp controller entries. Had to adjust timeconst.
Not sure why it didn't complain on shot4???

Plasma full length, fsp pokes. Startup a bit sluggish.
SSEP between -5 and -4mm. Brian says live with it.

Mar 19 2008 10:30:57:293AM1080319006Steve Wolfe
Shot#6:pg4 from 22 to 20msec
plasma full length. No bounce, no hesitation.

Next: change fsp monitor waveform on wire 11 from 0 to -.005 (just for scale)
otherwise repeat

Mar 19 2008 10:45:49:810AM1080319007Steve Wolfe
Shot#7: change fsp monitor waveform on wire 11 from 0 to -.005 (just for scale)
otherwise repeat

plasma full length, startup looks ok, breakdown a little late.
FSP error around -2000A-m (was -6000). That's consistent.

Next: Aim for ssep -3mm.

Mar 19 2008 11:04:12:717AM1080319008Steve Wolfe
Shot#8:Aim for ssep -3mm: zcur ramp from [-.015,-.019] to [-.009,-.015]
Note: not a uniform shift, trying to flatten it out a bit.

plasma, ssep scanning from -3 to -2mm. BLaB says leave it alone.
Note that clearin error is +4000 dropping to zero, alternate clearin
on wire 10 is ~-1500 (ref to upper xpoint).
Next: no changes

Mar 19 2008 11:16:18:950AM1080319009Steve Wolfe
Shot#9:no changes
plasma full length. startup ok.

Next: aim for DN

Mar 19 2008 11:32:15:497AM1080319010Steve Wolfe
Shot#10: Aim for DN, also smaller inner gap by 1mm
ZCUR ramp from [-.009,-.015] to [-.003,-.009] (play it straight this time)
CLEARIN from -.002 to -.001. No change to RCUR.
plasma full length, some inner wall marfing after 1sec
Density is a little higher. Inner gap got bigger, now 1.5 was 1.1, he wanted 1.0

Next: tweak zcur, clearin

Mar 19 2008 11:47:42:170AM1080319011Steve Wolfe
Shot#11: zcur ramp from [-.003,-.009] to [-.003,-.011]
reduce argon to 100msec
clearin from -.001 to -.004 (went the wrong way last time!)
nl04 from 8 to 7.5e19
Rcur from .656 to .655

plasma full length. No marfy this time, density is down a bit.
Looks like it's more DN this time too.

Next: reduce pg4 by 1msec, no other changes

Mar 19 2008 12:00:40:793PM1080319012Steve Wolfe
Shot#12: reduce pg4 from 20 to 19msec, no other changes
plasma, short marfe early.

Next: Go to upper null (ssep=+3mm)

Mar 19 2008 12:18:13:997PM1080319013Steve Wolfe
Shot#13: upper null ssep=+3mm
 Add clearin at 0.75sec, zxa=.394
zcur ramp from [-.003,-.011] to [+.003,-.005]
plasma, some early runaways?. Time to start putting gas back in.
Got ssep~4 to 5mm. Clearin error has a jump of ~3000 at ref switch,
better after than before according to efit.

Next: decrease zcur, switch clearin observer earlier. Add some pg4

Mar 19 2008 12:27:55:573PM1080319014Steve Wolfe
Shot#14: decrease zcur ramp to [.001,-.007],
switch clearin observer at .5sec instead of .75.
 pg4 from 19 to 20ms
fizzle. Did I do too much or too little? Too much I think.

Next: back down on pg4

Mar 19 2008 12:40:30:810PM1080319015Steve Wolfe
Shot#15: pg4 from 20 to 18msec
Still trying for ssep=+3mm
 zcur ramp to [.001,-.007],
switch clearin observer at .5sec instead of .75.
Another fizzle. RGA is broken, but I think maybe we have a leak?
Base pressure is up from earlier in the day, CIII signal is higher and Halpha
is not burning out.

Next: drop pg4 even more, see if it helps.

Mar 19 2008 01:01:06:497PM1080319016Steve Wolfe
Shot#16: pg4 from 18 to 15msec
request back off on cooling; vessel temp is 19C, doesn't seem bad.
IGT in INIT is 9.3e-7, vessel 20C. Longish delay for cooling CCins.
Fizzle detector is keeping dnb off.
Still trying for ssep=+3mm
 zcur ramp to [.001,-.007],
switch clearin observer at .5sec instead of .75.
plasma is back. good current rise, no hards.
SSEp 3-4mm, should be ok, left gap looks good at 11mm or so.

Next: Move on to +6mm case

Mar 19 2008 01:11:06:497PM1080319017Steve Wolfe
Shot#17: Move on to +6mm case
zcur ramp to [+.007,-.001]. leave clearin alone
pg4 still at 15msec
IGT at 1.3e-6 in INIT, vessel 19C

plasma full length. SSEP is around 8mm.

Next: reduce inner gap by 1mm

Mar 19 2008 01:24:26:870PM1080319018Steve Wolfe
Shot#18: reduce inner gap by 1mm
clearin from -.004 to -.005
rcur from .655 to .6545
pg4 from 15 to 14msec
IGT in INIT:2.3e-6 Tvess:18C
plasma full length

Next: Step C- Nl04 to 4.5e19?

Mar 19 2008 01:38:56:450PM1080319019Steve Wolfe
Shot#19: Repeat for better FSP, don't drop the density yet.
pg4 from 14 to 13msec
Vessel at 18C, IGT=2.4e-6 in INIT
fizzle. looks like it moves in, but there is a spike on dalpha and CIII at 12msec

Next: Br0 to -.0002, pg4 to 12msec.

Mar 19 2008 01:47:42:090PM1080319020Steve Wolfe
Shot#20: Br0 to -.0002, pg4 to 12msec.
IGT=1.2e-6 in INIT, 18C
plasma full length. That one bounced hard but survived.
Back up in pg4 I think.

Next: Now on to step C?

Mar 19 2008 02:02:47:997PM1080319021Steve Wolfe
Shot#21: pg4 from 12msec to 14msec
nl04 from 7.5 to 4.5e19 (step C)
1.5e-6, 18C in INIT

plasma full length, good looking startup, but density is 7e19.
PG3 is off after .5sec, it's running on the walls and the NINJA after that.

Next: reduce pg3 in seg2

Mar 19 2008 02:21:53:747PM1080319022Steve Wolfe
Shot#22: remove pg3 in seg2
outer gap scan for JT: move out by 9mm from 1.25sec to 1.5sec
so rcur from .6545 to .6590
leave pg4 at 14msec

1.4e-6, 16C in INIT
disruption at .45sec; bad early bounce again.
oh1 crowbarred after the disruption.
Happened in crossover. Big injection at 0.42sec

next: repeat?

Mar 19 2008 02:34:15:167PM1080319023Steve Wolfe
Shot#23: repeat. If 22 hadn't bounced I'd lower pg4 for disruption
recovery, but as it is, just leave it, probably raise on next shot.

in INIT: 18C, 9.3e-7
plasma with runaways. Probably better than no plasma at all.
small bounce, got 5e19, at least until the ninja.
Got the outer gap scan. There is an injection around crossover, but
no bite out of the current.

Next: start back up on pg4

Mar 19 2008 02:45:40:760PM1080319024Steve Wolfe
Shot#24: pg4 from 14 to 16msec
on to 3mm: import seg2 from #16
 load nl04 from #23
 load rcur from #23
 zero pg3 in seg2.
plasma, still some runaways, but not as bad as 23,
still a small bounce.

next: raise pg4 again, maybe back to DN

Mar 19 2008 02:57:30:463PM1080319025Steve Wolfe
Shot#25: pg4 from 16 to 18msec
import seg2 from shot#12 (DN)
import seg3 from shot#24, seg2 to use for copying
copy rcur, nl04, pg3 from seg3 to seg2.

plasma, still some hards, still has a bounce. Maybe time for rcur offset?

Mar 19 2008 03:20:18:370PM1080319026Steve Wolfe
Shot#26: pg4 from 18 to 20 msec; rcur offset from 1000 to 1800
import seg2 from shot#9 (-3mm)
copy rcur, nl04, pg3 from seg3 to seg2.

18C, 8.3e-7 at INIT after 20min (needed ross relays cycled)
plasma no runaways, no bounce
looks good enough to me, see what Brian thinks.

Mar 19 2008 03:32:57:183PM1080319027Steve Wolfe
Shot#27: import seg2 from shot#7 (-6mm)
copy rcur, nl04, pg3 from seg3 to seg2.
No seg1 changes this time.

17C, 1.1e-6 at INIT (on the beep)
plasma full length, no runaways.
good lsn case

Next: Raise density (step D)?

Mar 19 2008 03:45:27:543PM1080319028Steve Wolfe
Shot#28: Need to repeat for ASP scan
since I already started to change it, reimport seg2 from 27.
change rcur for JT: rcur at 1.4sec=.660, also at 1.5
No seg1 change

plasma full length, no runaways, no bounce
I think JT got his gap scan.

Next: on to 1.15e20?

Mar 19 2008 04:02:11:340PM1080319029Steve Wolfe
Shot#29: nl04 to 1.15e20, put back a pg3 puff in seg2 (step D)
No seg 1 changes (maybe should have dropped pg4 a bit?)

plasma to 1.75sec, nl04=1.1 before 0.8sec, 1.17 at 1.0sec
startup looks good, could use some more pg3 around .2 to .3sec

Next: increase pg3 in seg2, ramp nl04 a little faster

Mar 19 2008 04:11:03:560PM1080319030Steve Wolfe
Shot#30: increase pg3 in seg2, ramp nl04 a little faster
pg4 from 20 to 19msec

14C, 1.2e-6 at INIT
fizzle. Needed to drop it by more than 1msec I guess.

Mar 19 2008 04:23:13:107PM1080319031Steve Wolfe
Shot#31: pg4 from 19 to 16msec
Still trying for D.1 - LSN @1.15e20
plasma no runaways.

Next: skip to DN case (D.3 like #12 but 1.1e20)

Mar 19 2008 04:36:28:477PM1080319032Steve Wolfe
Shot#32: skip to DN case (D.3 like #12 but 1.1e20)
import seg3 from #31 seg2
import seg2 from #12 seg2 (DN case)
 copy nl04, rcur, pg3 from seg3 to seg2
 reduce nl04 to 1.1e20
PG4 from 16 to 15msec

fizzle. halpha never comes down.

Mar 19 2008 04:56:22:710PM1080319033Steve Wolfe
Shot#33: pg4 down from 15 to 13msec
still trying DN case (D.3 like #12 but 1.1e20)
delay for cycling oh1 ross relay again. 16:30 in recool!

plasma to 1.85. some runaways early, not bad. Big bounce, almost lost it.
density looks ok, SSEP +1 to +3mm.

Mar 19 2008 05:07:59:317PM1080319034Steve Wolfe
Shot#34: pg4 to 14msec
Go to full upper null like shot 20
import seg2 from #20, copy nl04,rcur,pg3 from seg3
 reduce nl04 to 1.05e20.
cross fingers and hope for a plasma even though it's after 17:00

plasma with marfe.
END OF RUN.
