| Session Leader Plan for 1080320
------------------------------------ MP:515 Effect of launched nll spectrum on current profile Session Leader: R. Parker Physop: E. Marmar Goal: Make clear measurements of LH driven current using MSE, and examine effect of parallel index of refraction on current profile. Approach: Set-up reproducible, low density discharge and optimize coupling so as to enable high power (~ 1 MW) LH current drive. Run this shot with 60, 75, 90 and 120 phasing, monitoring time development of pitch angle of field with MSE. Note: LH phasing should be initially 60 deg, and grill should be set 1 mm behind protective limiter. Shot plan: Shots 1-7: Start with shot 1080312028 (6.2 T) but with Ip = 1 MA. Keep nl_04 to 4e19 m-2 or below if possible. Begin with LH power at 500 kW, bringing it up to 1 MW or maximum level for which stable LH pulses can be produced. Adjust shape to optimize coupling, if necessary. Shots 8-10: Obtain reproducible MSE for 60 deg phasing. Shots 11-15: Under similar conditions, get data for 75 deg phasing Shots 16-20: Under similar conditions, get data for 90 deg phasing Shots 21-25: Under similar conditions, get data for 120 deg phasing If time, apply 1 MW from J-port and repeat with optimal phasing. |

| Overall a pretty good day. The TF all day was at 6.2 T, which helped accessibility.
Lower hybrid RF system performed fairly well, with several shots @ 1 MW. Phase was scanned from 60 - 120 phasing in accordance with run plan. MSE data were taken throughout run, and results from reducing these data should give a good indication of current profiles vs. phasing. Shot 2: 1 MA, loop voltage to 0, but decays to 0.5 V. 700 kW, 60 deg Shot 7: 800 kA, loop voltage to 0.2, decays to 0.4 V. 500-600 kW, 60 deg. Shot 9: 800 kA, loop voltage slightly positive, decays to 0.25 V. 700 kW, 60 deg no beam. Shot 10: 800 kA, positive loop voltage, short fault in middle. 800+ kW, 60 deg Shot 11: 800 kA, positive loop voltage, MHD kills LHCD @ 1.05 s. 800 kW, 60 deg Shot 12 and 13: similar to 11. On shot 13 900+ kW. still 60 deg. Shot 15: 800 kA, loop volts decays from 0.13 - 0.3 V, 750 kW, 75 deg Shot 17: 800 kA, loop volts decays from 0.0 - 0.25 V, 900 kW, 75 deg Shot 18: 800 kA, loop voltage decays from 0.0 to 0.2 V, 1 MW+, 75 deg Shot 19: 800 kA, loop voltage decays from 0.1 to .25 V, 925 kW, 75 deg Shot 20: 800 kA, MHD begins to plague us. 800+ kW, 90 deg Shot 23: 800 kA, MHD interrupts LHCD @ 0.926 s. Before that loop voltage drops from 0.25 -0.35 V. 850+ kW, 90 deg Shot 25: 800 kA, Very early and virulent MHD, loop voltage erratic, 800 kW, 90 deg Shot 28: 800 kA, late MHD, loop voltage ~ 0.6 V, less droop, MHD kills LHCD @ 1.12 s, 650 kW, 120 deg Shot 29: 800 kA, MHD at end of LH pulse, loop voltage decays from 0.2 to 0.4 V, 900 + kW, 75 deg Shot 30: 1 MA, Somewhat higher density, loop voltage decays from 0.38 - 0.59 V, 900+ kW, 75 deg Shot 31: 1 MA, nl_04 ~ 5e19 m-2, loop voltage drops from 0.44 - 0.65, 900+ kW, 75 deg, no MHD problem Shot 32: 1 MA, nl_04 ~ 5+e19 m-2, loop voltage drops from 0.5 - 0.7, 1.05 MW, 75 deg Shot 33: 1 MA, nl_04 ~ 4e19 m-2, strong MHD, ~ 1 MW, 75 degree It seems that MHD comes in when the density is low and LHCD power is high. Not clear how this depends on phase. Better with higher density, but is this because of less current drive? |

| Summary, 1080320
The machine ran quite well today. Around shot 14, the base pressure started to rise, and it appeared that it was due to a cooling-related leak. The RGA was not working today, so we couldn't look at the constituents of the pressure rise. Slowing the cooling a bit seemed to solve the problem by about shot 19 or 20. Fill pressure was high by historical standards. Lower pressures lead to fast current rise and bouncing to the outside. The leak gave a fizzle or two. Later in the run, we started alternating between plasmas and fizzles, with occasionally 2 fizzles in a row. Shot 24 seemed to lurch vertically during startup. A .4 mT BR_0 tweak prior to shot 28 was followed by 6 good startups in a row. Shots today were all at low density, with plenty of hard x-rays both before and after the Lower Hybrid. Raising the density a bit toward the end of the day pretty much eliminated the pre-LH hard x-rays. Shot 8 had data system problems during init, and was taken as a no-power shot. Scorecard: plasmas 25 fizzles 7 no power 1 Total cycles 33 |

| Mar 20 2008 09:17:18:940AM | 1080320001 | Ron Parker | First shot was perfect, as far as plasma is concerned (nl_04 ~ 0.3, Ip = 1 MA.) Unfortunately LH tripped out due to low density at grill, especially at lowest row.
Shot had copius runaways, triggered by LH which tripped after ~ 30 ms. |
| Mar 20 2008 05:15:17:840PM | 1080320002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 was almost perfect! One LH trip, but flat LH from 0.8 - 1.2 s. Strong signals from MSE with clear difference between this shot and shot 1.
Characteristic slow development of loop voltage, reaches 0 but decays to 0.5 V. Density also rises, limiting current drive efficiency. Next: increase LH power. |
| Mar 20 2008 09:54:18:393AM | 1080320003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 was interesting. Higher poer, 900 kW, but tripping. Nevertheless loop voltage above 0 for 50 ms. Next: try again. |
| Mar 20 2008 09:58:42:457AM | 1080320004 | Ron Parker | Shot 4 had frequent trips. Density at grill is marginally too low.
Push grill in 0.5 mm (!) on next shot. |
| Mar 20 2008 10:25:26:597AM | 1080320005 | Ron Parker | LH still tripping.
Next, we'll lower current to 800 kA to see if we can recover high power operation. |
| Mar 20 2008 10:41:26:817AM | 1080320006 | Ron Parker | For this shot, LH power was reduced, current was reduced to 800 kA but LH keeps tripping out. Looks like breakdown somewhere, Greg thinks the breakdown may be in the stacked plates or transformer. We'll continue to lower power to try to find a place where LH doesn't trip out. |
| Mar 20 2008 11:37:08:527AM | 1080320007 | Ron Parker |
Well, shot plus LH ran and looked like a good shot for MSE to analyze. Next: increase power to 130 kW/klystron, except for the troublesome no. 10. |
| Mar 20 2008 11:38:14:997AM | 1080320009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 ran nicely with ~ 700 kW LH, no trips, but alas, no beam! |
| Mar 20 2008 11:54:58:997AM | 1080320010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 ran fairly well, but LH tripped in middle; nevertheless a decent shot for MSE analysis. Note: field rampdown at 1.2 s, set to 1.5 after this shot. |
| Mar 20 2008 12:19:53:607PM | 1080320011 | Ron Parker | Shot 11 ran well, but LHCD led to MHD instability. Interesting, but not what we wanted. |
| Mar 20 2008 12:18:47:200PM | 1080320012 | Ron Parker | Shot 12 ran well, again current drive seems to induce MHD instability.
Next shot: increase LH power, after which we'll change phasing. |
| Mar 20 2008 12:31:07:450PM | 1080320013 | Ron Parker | Pretty good shot, but MHD again kills the current drive.
Power touched 1 MW, and loop voltage reversed to 0.2 V Next: 75 deg phasing, lower power to ~ 700 kW. Before run ends, we should try this shot with 1 MA. |
| Mar 20 2008 12:40:33:527PM | 1080320014 | Ron Parker | Shot 14 fizzled because of a suspected leak. |
| Mar 20 2008 02:12:06:793PM | 1080320015 | Ron Parker | Shot 15 was good. 75 deg phasing, fairly flat voltage. Some incipient MHD activity on ECE~ 700 kW couled. Next: increase power. |
| Mar 20 2008 02:13:10:840PM | 1080320016 | Ron Parker | Shot 16 fizzled. |
| Mar 20 2008 02:15:07:717PM | 1080320017 | Ron Parker | Shot 17 was 75 deg, good shot, no faults, ~ 850 kW |
| Mar 20 2008 02:16:07:107PM | 1080320018 | Ron Parker | Shot 18 was good, ~ 1 MW, 75 deg. |
| Mar 20 2008 02:18:30:217PM | 1080320019 | Ron Parker | Shot 19 went through, 900 kW, 75 deg phasing, no faults, MHD at end.
|
| Mar 20 2008 02:19:29:323PM | 1080320020 | Ron Parker | Shot 20, 90 deg, had locked mode and turned really ugly. |
| Mar 20 2008 02:21:08:777PM | 1080320021 | Ron Parker | Shot 21 fizzled |
| Mar 20 2008 02:49:49:853PM | 1080320023 | Ron Parker | Shot 23 went off well, 90 deg phasing, ~900 kW LH.
Next: Run 105 deg LH. |
| Mar 20 2008 02:55:08:527PM | 1080320024 | Ron Parker | Fizzle. |
| Mar 20 2008 03:21:27:310PM | 1080320025 | Ron Parker | Shot 25 ran OK, but MHD started early -- trend seems to be that higher phase brings on MHD instability earlier. |
| Mar 20 2008 03:22:10:573PM | 1080320026 | Ron Parker | Phasing changed from 105 to 120. Fizzle |
| Mar 20 2008 03:33:57:043PM | 1080320027 | Ron Parker | Ooops, another fizzle.
|
| Mar 20 2008 04:24:50:073PM | 1080320028 | Ron Parker | Shot 28 was the obligatory 120 deg shot. Not much current drive.
|
| Mar 20 2008 04:28:06:840PM | 1080320029 | Ron Parker | Shot 29 was back to 75 deg, density nl_04 ~ 4e19 m-2.
Good shot, good beam. |
| Mar 20 2008 04:22:15:840PM | 1080320030 | Ron Parker | Shot 30 was a good shot. Density a little higher, nl_04 ~ 4.5, loop volts ~ 0.5 V.
Good shot for analysis. Next: raise density again. |
| Mar 20 2008 04:39:23:137PM | 1080320031 | Ron Parker | Good shot, flat current, loop voltage, etc.
Next: tease the power up, also slightly higher density.. |
| Mar 20 2008 05:04:06:980PM | 1080320032 | Ron Parker | Another good shot, a little higher density, but 1 MW+ of LH power.
Still 75 deg phasing |
| Mar 20 2008 05:03:47:840PM | 1080320033 | Ron Parker | Last shot was terrible! Don't look. |
