| Day 1 of MP 538 Er Profile Studies
Session Leader: Rachael McDermott PO: J. Irby Goal: The purpose of this experiment is to study th radial and temporal behavior of the edge radial electric field before and during L-H transistions in order to characterize the role the field plays in the transition and the effect the structure of the field has on H-mode confinement. Approach: Run forward field dischargers in LSN and USN inducing L-H transitions in each using ICRF power. Discharges will be run at two different currents, 800kA and 1.1MA. ICRF power will be used to change the stored energy of the H-mode on a shot to shot basis. The average triangularity will be changed (shot=to-shot) at each current to change the type of H-mode acheived from EDA to ELM-free. The EDA shots will be attempted first, to take advantage of the boronization. Enable Ninja puffing for innerwal CXRS, enable DNB timing 40ms high, 20ms low Enable Argon puffing: starting at 100miliseconds @ 1psi and adjust as necessary for Hirex signal and H-mode preservation. Shot List: LSN Starting equilbria 1080228018, with a few changes (No change in triangularity through out the shot) Starting average triangularity =0.44 delta_upper~0.34 delta_lower~0.53 Target shots desired: 1) Ip=800kA, nl04=0.8*10^20 m^-2, flat ICRF power, just over threshold power starting at 0.7s to 1.5s 2) Ip=800kA, nl04=0.8*10^20 m^-2, flat ICRF power, max available starting at 0.7s to 1.5s 3)Ip=1.1MA, nl04=0.8*10^20 m^-2, flat ICRF power, just over threshold power starting at 0.7s to 1.5s (TRY for EDA, if current is too high drop to 1.0MA) 4) Ip=1.1MA, nl04=0.8*10^20 m^-2, flat ICRF power, max available starting at 0.7s to 1.5s ELM-free Portion Average triangularity reduced to =0.33 attempt this by moving delta_lower primarily to keep LCFS position roughly the same for TS diagnostic Repeat the 4 target discharges above, this time trying for ELM-free H-modes Time allowing: Switch to USN, Target Discharges 1 & 2 |

| This was a really good run day. We got some really good data and accomplished a fair portion of the run plan.
Of 32 discharges we had 30 plasmas, 2 fizzles, and 1 or 2 diruptions. The EDA portion of the run plan was completed, though the RF was not very steady for the high power shots. Still, EDA's at two different currents were obtained at a variety of stored energies, and the CXRS data in the EDA's was very good. The attempt to change the type of H-mode acheived by changing the triangularity of the plasma from 0.44 to 0.33 was not successful. Perhaps because we did not reduce the triangularity by enough or perhaps because the edge q was too high. The ELM-free portion of the run was accomplished by going to higher current. The ELM-free target with the lower RF power was acheived, but unfortunately, due to the loss of J-port, the high power ELM-free case could not be run. Additionally, the USN portion was not attempted for the same reason. The initial ELM-free H-modes obtained were a bit too short lived to get really good CXRS data in them, and for some reason the CXRS signal in the middle of an ELM-free H-mode seems to be reduced compared to the beginning or end of the same ELM-free, which makes it hard to track changes through out the entire life time of the H-mode. On shots 27 and 28 the target density was increased from 0.8 to 0.9 which improved the life time of the ELM-free H-modes by almost a factor of two. The CXRS data obtained in these H-modes was much clearer. The QC mode during the EDA's was very clear on both the reflectometry and the PCI, and on several shots it showed a shift in frequency correlated with changes in stored energy. This change in frequency also correlated with changes in the poloidal velocity. An increase in poloidal velocity correlated with a decrease in QC mode freq. and visa versa. The CXRS temperatures agreed very well with the TS data in both magnitude and position, which is a nice change from the uncertainty of last summer. |

| Machine ran well. We had two fizzles, shot 01 and 04, both caused by too much gas. It took about 10 discharges to get good EDAs and bring up the icrf. An injection caused a disruption on shot 14. We had a 150 ms discharge on shot 22 that was either killed by an injection, or some type of fueling issue. The plasma current rose properly, but the density did not. CII was high for this discharge by 10 ms. We incrementally scanned the upper and lower triangularity today with adjustments in RXL and RXU. Upper triagularity range from 0.33 to 0.30; lower from 0.53 to 0.40. Shot 29 was a locked mode rotation calibration shot.
We were able to produce very good EDA plasmas throughout the entire run today; possibly because of the reduced icrf Joules injected. We lost a bias supply in the FMIT#3 on shot 24. Should have parts to replace on Monday. We lost some data from shot 26 to 30. Seemed to have been a CAMAC highway problem. It was fixed on shot 31. We ran the LN2 pump at 6 psi most of the day (8 to 10 psi is normal). We were then able to run w/o the vacuum leak that has occurred recently on several runs. The vessel temperature only dropped to 20C or so while at this low pump speed. We also had no cell oxygen alarms and cell access could be done quickly. The down side is 14 to 16 minute cooldown times. Still, we were able to run 32 shot cycles. No ECDC this weekend. Why mess with a nicely conditioned wall. Bake at 60C. Two fizzles, and 30 plasmas |

| Mar 21 2008 10:13:44:420AM | 1080321005 | Rachael Mcdermott | Better ICRF, no h-mode, try again next shot
changed beam timing to 60ms high 30ms low, until we get the H-mode we want. |
| Mar 21 2008 10:30:11:140AM | 1080321006 | Rachael Mcdermott | H-mode! Doesn't look too bad either.
At T=1s @1.1MW of RF power Next shot: flat RF pulse from t=.7 to 1.5s at 1.2MW. Triangularity during the H-mode, stayed pretty flat. yay. Decent, CX data |
| Mar 21 2008 10:40:04:390AM | 1080321007 | Rachael Mcdermott | h-mode, but not the steady eda I'm looking for.
comes in late, turning up icrf to 1.5mw to try and pop in faster. |
| Mar 21 2008 11:01:43:000AM | 1080321008 | Rachael Mcdermott | nicer, CX data is good, clear poloidal velocity well.
rf still having trouble repeat this shot until we get it steady |
| Mar 21 2008 11:23:04:250AM | 1080321009 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good shot, Rf dropping out when pressure gets too high, hope that will clean up
Some good cx data, 40kv/m er well from poloidal alone I have the data I need at this target. Moving to the higher current target, Ip=1.1MA, try for the EDA again. ICRF=1.5MW |
| Mar 21 2008 11:33:18:873AM | 1080321010 | Rachael Mcdermott | same as shot 9, also good. next shot moving to 1.1MA
really nice poloidal pedestal data |
| Mar 21 2008 11:44:39:187AM | 1080321011 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip=1.1MA
No H-mode this time. Raising the power to 2MW and trying again. |
| Mar 21 2008 11:58:40:813AM | 1080321012 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip=1.1MA Got the H-Mode but not the kind we want! ELm-free, call is an extra data point for part two of this experiment.
Drop the current to 1.0MA and try for the EDA again. Keep power the same. There is a pretty strong Qc mode in these "elm-free" I think they wanted to be EDAs. |
| Mar 21 2008 12:11:45:470PM | 1080321013 | Rachael Mcdermott | Much nicer.
Run this one more time and hope the RF cleans up The poloidal velocity wells are not noticibly different or deeper than those from shot 8-10 Repeat this shot, then move to the higher power portion. |
| Mar 21 2008 12:19:26:640PM | 1080321014 | Rachael Mcdermott | Disruption. ouch.
|
| Mar 21 2008 12:43:39:953PM | 1080321015 | Rachael Mcdermott | Much better!
Very nice poloidal velocity data! Clean toroidal data as well. Next shot Ip=1MA incrase RF power to 3MW moving to 3+MW for 250ms at the end |
| Mar 21 2008 01:05:07:233PM | 1080321016 | Rachael Mcdermott | Gorgeous! Poloidal velocity well, changing with changing stored energy, increaseing to 20km/s or more. ~ 80kv/m just from Vpol.
Go back to 800KA, and try for similar stored energy. There's a down shift in the frequency of the QC mode at about 1.1s. At the same time there is an increase in the depth of the Er well due to the poloidal velocity term. |
| Mar 21 2008 01:18:46:390PM | 1080321017 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good shot.
Do it again, but drop the RF power to 3.5MW, and try for steady EDA with st Clear indications poloidal velocity follows stored energy |
| Mar 21 2008 05:03:54:267PM | 1080321018 | Rachael Mcdermott | There is a funny variation in the right gap, delta_upper, and everything else that is not correlated with the RF. We'll try this shot one more time, and then move on to the ELM-free portion of this MP.
Very clear change in poloidal velocities tracking the stored energy, and correlated with the changes in QC frequency. |
| Mar 21 2008 01:37:34:093PM | 1080321019 | Rachael Mcdermott | Back half of this H-mode is really nice, should give me the stored energy comparison I was looking for with sh13.
Moving to the ELM-free portion of the plan, changing delta_ave to 0.33 cross your fingers |
| Mar 21 2008 01:47:10:593PM | 1080321019 | Rachael Mcdermott | Back half of this H-mode is really nice, should give me the stored energy comparison I was looking for with sh13.
toroidal data, was pretty lousy on this shot however. Moving to the ELM-free portion of the plan, changing delta_ave to 0.33 cross your fingers |
| Mar 21 2008 02:07:41:973PM | 1080321020 | Rachael Mcdermott | Beautiful EDA, W=90kJ , unfortunately, the goal was ELM-free!
Decreasing the triangularity further |
| Mar 21 2008 02:46:59:720PM | 1080321023 | Rachael Mcdermott | Getting closer to ELM-free, but not there yet. Give this method one more shot, dropping lower triangularity even further, down to 0.37 and see if we get the Elm-free, otherwise raise the current.
|
| Mar 21 2008 03:08:15:203PM | 1080321024 | Rachael Mcdermott | Got the target average triangularity, but did not get ELM free H-mode.
Giving up on this approach, going to Ip=1.2MA. Lost J-port. RF=2MW flat pulse CX data too noisy on this shot, too much changing too quickly. |
| Mar 21 2008 03:18:27:797PM | 1080321025 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip=1.2MA got a couple of ELM-free H-modes
Don't have the beam timing in the Elm-free i want. repeat this shot |
| Jul 14 2008 12:55:26:613PM | 1080321025 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip=1.2MA got a couple of ELM-free H-modes
Don't have the beam timing in the Elm-free i want. repeat this shot don't believe passive pedestal and SOL measurements- there is something distorting the spectra -edge localized on both pol. and tor. |
| Mar 21 2008 03:48:02:627PM | 1080321026 | Rachael Mcdermott | Still having trouble pulling out data from these Elm frees and they are pretty long lived.
try once more, then go back to EDA plasmas. |
| Mar 21 2008 03:57:11:437PM | 1080321027 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good shot.
Repeat this shot once more. |
| Mar 21 2008 04:13:07:063PM | 1080321028 | Rachael Mcdermott | Another great shot.
Good CX profiles Next: run Lock mode shot for Hirex |
| Mar 21 2008 04:30:48:640PM | 1080321029 | Rachael Mcdermott | Successful lock mode shot for the hirex boys
Go back to shot 19: Ip=800kA, and change RF power within a shot from 1.5 to 2.5MW |
| Mar 21 2008 04:40:54:343PM | 1080321030 | Rachael Mcdermott | Beam died!
Ran the wrong shot. lock mode shot again (accidently) We'll get it right next time. |
| Mar 21 2008 04:57:31:627PM | 1080321031 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good shot, nice EDA again at the end of the day!!
Frequency shift on the QC mode when the extra power is put in. next shot, same thing, but switch RF power from high to low. |
