| 30 shots (26 plasmas, 3 fizzles and 1 dud)
Despite not reaching every goal outlined in MP 519 it was overall a successful run. The deuterium density had to be decreased by turning off NINJA (D2 puffing) and cooking the walls with succesive RF discharges. The DNB CX enhancement for the 468.6 nm line in He II was small but probably useful. As a result of the meager CX enhancement a non-evolving background was necessary. This restricted the discharge to be L-mode only. THis also restricted the RF to be a single value during each shot instead of the steps envisioned in the SL_Plan. A density and RF power scan (2 points each) was possible obtaining time resolved spectra from 4 spatial points toroidally and poloidally at the outer wall. There was a single attempt (shot 30) to get a boron based Er measurement at one power and density for comparison. Mention was made of an equivalent to EDA H-modes in Helium plasmas. This was later determined to be slightly erroneous due to the high deuterium level. As the neutron count dropped wrt previous deuterium discharges (implying a majority helium plasma) the transient H-modes appearing in past helium runs were present. |

| Machine ran well today. However we did have a leak following shot 14 that resulted in a fizzle on shot 15. We also had a fizzle, possibly because of too much gas, on shot 22. The leak appeared when the average vessel temperature was about 21C. Switching the cooling from warmest vertical leg to average vertical control may have fixed the leak (at a pump speed of 7 psi).
Too little gas may have caused a fizzle on shot 29. We started up the machine with a deuterium prefill, but had 10 psi of helium 4 in the main plenum. The density overshot on the first discharge of the day, but then was under control the rest of the day. We found the the NINJA deuterium puff was keeping us from getting a very pure helium plasma and it was disabled early in the run. The neutron rates then decreased rapidly over several shots. We had a problem with STATE as we attemped shot 27. When we tried to take the shot we had the the EF1s in PLC control for some reason and had a dud. STATE had to be rebooted earlier in the run. I had the argon pulse setup for 175 instead of 75 ms for a few shots early in the run. fizzles 15, 22, 29 dud 27 (no ef1s) problems today: rf pickup from open coax in power room leak following shot 14 STATE had to be rebooted STATE hang |
