| MP 534: Foil/AXUV Bolometer Calibration in Helium (1/2-day AM)
SL: ML Reinke PO: IH Hutchinson The main purpose of this experiment is create radiative plasmas with a variety of impurities to cross-calibrate the foil and AXUV bolometers. A second goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of N V emission in polluting the edge lyman alpha measument. Diagnostics: All Te and n_e profile diagnostics (GPC1 and GPC2, edge/core TS, TCI, FRC). All impurity spectroscopy (HIREXSR, NeSOX, bolometry, VUV, CHROMEX) DNB: 150 ms on 150 ms off at max beam current. Cryopump: Needed on first shot ICRF: 0.4-1.5 seconds @ 3 MW (first few shots to tune up) Plan (all gas puffs use B-SIDE lower): A) establish USN ICRF heated L-mode like 1080116014. ICRF up to max power 0.4-1.5 seconds. No gas puffing. Measure Mo-dominated emissivity from foils and AXUV. B) turn on Ne gas puff from 0.3-1.3 seconds at 3.0 psi. Adjust pressure as necessary to get steady, radiative discharge. C) switch to Ar gas puff at 1.5 psi. Adjust pressure as necessary to get steady, radiative discharge. D) switch to Kr gas puff at 0.5 psi. Adjust pressure as necessary to get steady, radiative discharge. ****CELL ACCESS TO SWITCH GAS BOTTLES IF ON SCHEDULE**** E) switch to Xe gas puff at 0.25 psi. Adjust pressure as necessary to get steady, radiative discharge. F) switch to N gas puff at 4.0 psi. Adjust pressure as necessary to get steady, radiative discharge. |

| Detailed instructions for the second half run, MP#517 "Experimental test of a Kalman filter for the vertical position"
1) load shot 1071211009 as the target equilibrium (k=1.7, control gains to their nominal values P=4 D=6, one of the shots from the similar experiment run in December). 2) Click on OBSERVERS, then on dpcs_kalmanfull2_zcur. A widget will open. Remove this procedure. 3) Click on OBSERVERS, then on New. Choose dpcs_kalman_zcur from the scroll-down menu. 4) Click on OBSERVERS, then on dpcs_kalman_zcur. A widget will open. Fill out the fields like follows: - write {ZCUR_phys_noise:16e6,Chopper_Gain:200.} in Parameters. Check the box for IDL Value. - write [0.8,2.0] in Switch Times. - write 10 in Wires. Then click Apply and Dismiss. Double-check that it took the inputs by re-opening the widget. 5) Run the shot. In this case the Kalman will output on wire 10 so that we can monitor the output before operating the filter in the loop (1-2 shots). 6) Change the number in Wires from 10 to 3. This will switch the output of the filter to the fast vertical control wire: the Kalman is now in the loop. 7) Run the shot and check the results (1-2 shots). 8) If everything looks fine, push the elongation, until disruption (1-2 shots). 9) Now increase the derivative gain from D=6 to 8 or 10. The rationale here is that without noise we might be able to increase the derivative gain and maybe control higher elongations (2-3 shots). 10) Go back to the initial derivative gain (D=6) and lower the proportioanl gain (P=2.5) to excite the low frequency vertical resonance. Here we want to see how the filter behaves when the real system follows a dynamic that is not included in the model of the filter (2-3 shots). 11) End of the half run. Total 7-12 shots. |

| As of shot 2. Vispec is looking at Ne VIII at 433 nm. The view is the outerwall poloidal (4 channels spread evenly inside the separatrix)
Clear Stark broadening on D-gamma during RF. So much that the wing may contribute to the Ne line when present. |

| We got the the target discharge developed and one neon shot before everything went wrong. After a massive disruption on shot 005 there was nothing but fizzles. The outgassing from the antennnas makes the little data that was collected suspect. See the PL_SUMMAY for the post-mormtem. By the time the run switchover came around, a full length plasma had yet to be made. |

| Summary
_______ Started ok with He plasmas. At or about shot 4 a leak opened up. Shot 4 had a disruption caused by a big injection. Shot 5 was a very ugly runaway shot that saturated the cameras and crunched on the inner wall. Thereafter we had nothing but fizzles. ECDC in He or D2 was unavailing. The last attempt, shot 24, gave a current up to nearly 100 kA for about .1s, with lots of runaways. At that point the run was terminated and a visual inspection called for. Scorecard: __________ 6 plasmas 18 fizzles. (Average shot to bits.) |

| Mar 26 2008 09:15:27:823AM | 1080326001 | Matt Reinke | First shot, loading 1080116014 and tweaking for He plasma. No impurity puff, trying to get the Mo background and make sure everything is working.
RESULT: RF=3 MW, a little hashy. Density WAY overshoots early and SS nl04=1.3. Radiation seems low for 3 MW. NEXT: Repeat |
| Mar 26 2008 09:29:56:027AM | 1080326002 | Matt Reinke | Better. The density is more controlled, but still higher than desired. E-Port trips. LYMID during RF pulse is 10 kW/m^2, likely ANT outgassing.
Next: try and lower density, and get RF working. |
| Mar 26 2008 09:42:28:290AM | 1080326003 | Matt Reinke | Good shot minus the injections. RF is great at 3.3 MW out of just D & E. Start on the impurity puffing.
NEXT: 3.1 psi of Ne from 0.3-1.3 |
| Mar 26 2008 10:00:36:150AM | 1080326004 | Matt Reinke | Starts to get steady, but appears that a high-Z injection at 0.76 (on x-rays) kills the plasma. Doesn't appear to be Mo based on HIREXSR. Probably not Ne puff, which seems about right.
NEXT: Repeat. |
| Mar 26 2008 10:11:58:540AM | 1080326005 | Matt Reinke | Horrible runaway shot with pyrotechnics (K-Port LIM?)
NEXT: Repeat 004 |

| Mar 26 2008 09:04:31:167AM | Ian Hutchinson | Load from 1080116014.
Load segment 1 from 1080325030. Segment 4 is the active segment. That says it is upper null. Remove Pulse Gas 1 and 2 puffs in PCS. Remove the step from the nl04 program. Load. Matt announces he wants cryopump. Increase fill to 50ms. Load | |
| Mar 26 2008 09:26:01:353AM | 1080326001 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown. Crazy high density but it survives.
Delay early nl04 rise. |
| Mar 26 2008 09:43:28:933AM | 1080326002 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown. Avoided marfe. Only 1.7MW RF.
Lower nl04 to .9 from 1.1. |
| Mar 26 2008 09:52:08:073AM | 1080326003 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown. 3.3MW. NL04 got 1.1e20. Injections but otherwise good.
Program in gas puff PG1 from .3 to 1.3s. Fill puff to 46ms. |
| Mar 26 2008 10:01:02:167AM | 1080326004 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at .76s. Looks like a big injection. |
| Mar 26 2008 10:15:33:183AM | 1080326005 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to .7s. Horrid runaway shot provoked by very strange startup.
Don't know what to do. Do nothing. |
| Mar 26 2008 10:58:10:040AM | 1080326006 | Ian Hutchinson | Found there is a leak. Possibly the cause of the past shot problem.
Regen the cryopump. Base pressure at 1.5e-6 prior to recool. Don't understand the various pressures we are seeing. Eventually gets to 5e-7 so try a shot. Fizzle. Lots of Carbon light and very little current. Br offset to -.0003 from zero. |
| Mar 26 2008 11:11:04:450AM | 1080326007 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Very little current.
Fill puff to 40ms. |
| Mar 26 2008 11:42:35:917AM | 1080326008 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Fill was even higher, presumably because the pump was not working
at full speed. ECDC in He for ten minutes. Purge cryopump nitrogen (as well as He). Recool pump. |
| Mar 26 2008 11:57:22:307AM | 1080326009 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Cryopump did not pump so fill was way too high.
Turn off cryopump. Disable b-side lower (neon). No RF. Br offset to -.0005 |
| Mar 26 2008 12:10:24:323PM | 1080326010 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle.
Fill puff to 13ms. Br offset to 0. |
| Mar 26 2008 01:17:41:340PM | 1080326011 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle.
30 minute ECDC in Deuterium. We will now give up on Helium plasmas because the first half of the run is just about done with. Br offset now zero. Fill puff 13ms. nl04 demand to .8e20. |
| Mar 26 2008 01:36:57:903PM | 1080326012 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Weak current. No pump-out.

ICEF4 to -1355 from -1350. |
| Mar 26 2008 01:56:51:810PM | 1080326014 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. CII light is just over .02. This is higher than the first shot of the
campaign on Mar 16 2007. Br offset to -.0003 |
| Mar 26 2008 02:10:25:107PM | 1080326015 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Somewhat more gas current.
Rcur offset to 700 from 1000. |
| Mar 26 2008 02:21:05:793PM | 1080326016 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Breakdown slightly later.

Br offset to zero, from -.0003. |
| Mar 26 2008 03:11:43:077PM | 1080326020 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle.
Br offset to -.0005 Fill puff to 11ms. |
| Mar 26 2008 03:25:29:950PM | 1080326021 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle.
Fill puff to 20ms. |
| Mar 26 2008 03:42:56:433PM | 1080326022 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Base pressure is about 7e-7, not very low. Carbon still high.
Reload segment 1 from shot 1, in interests of showing I haven't done something stupid. Set fill puff to 14ms. |
| Mar 26 2008 03:53:50:637PM | 1080326023 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle.
Br offset to -.0007 |
