Explore efficacy of exciting 16 waveguides of LH grill (which configuration is best, left 16, middle 16 or right 16?) 2.) Check assumptions made in MP 542a, regarding scrape-off length inside LH limiter. 3.) MSE profile measurements for 60, 75 and 90 phasing with 1-2 MW ICRH from J-port. 4.) Fill in LHCD current profiles (MSE) for 90 and 120 degree phasing (Virulent MHD again?)Ohmic only. Approach: First 2 hours will be devoted to checking efficiency of LHCD with only 16 waveguides excited, in sequence left 16, middle 16 and right 16. The results will be useful in defining configuration of waveguide feeds for this coupler when new coupler is installed. Then, we'll run up to 2-8 shots for MP542a, the first 2-4 checking assumption of equal probe signals when the launcher and LH limiters are congruent with the plasma shape. If assumption is verified, we'll run up to 4 shots with different plasma shape in order to estimate the density gradient in front of LH limiters. Next, we'll check if MHD reappears under conditions similar to 1080320020 and higher. If so, we'll increase density to get rid of MHD and make MSE profile measurements for 90 and 120 degree phasing. Finally, we'll begin applying 1-2 MW of ICRH to see if current profile can be modified by damping the LH waves at higher Te. |

| There were no useful plasmas today, due to recovery from the Neon shot last Wednesday. This took many "shots", mostly fizzles with occasional short current pulses. Finally, on shot 37 the plasma pulse length extended to 1 s, giving hope that repeated fizzles and short discharges (~ 0.2 sec) that were being run were actually doing some good in terms of cleaning the machine. Then, after another fizzle, deus ex machina, two full plasmas through rampdown were produced, one upper and the second lower null! At that point the run ended, but with the hope that the scheduled run plan could be carried out tomorrow.

| This was a day to try the patience of any physop.
This was the first run since 1080326. Shot 5 on that day was a spectacular run-away shot, which disrupted. Video from wide2 indicated a very large shower of meteorites coming from somewhere in the vicinity of kport. All shots for the rest of that day were fizzles, with the exception of shot 24, which reached 100kA and died at 73 msec, again with lots of hard x-rays. There followed a short boronization experiment (using 20% diborane, 80% helium), and then 5 days of ECDC with 60 degree C bake. Shot 1 today had slow current rise, was very dirty, and disrupted at 140 msec. For the rest of the day, we had many fizzles, with occasional short shots. Hard x-rays improved through the day, and eventually (shot 36), the plasma lasted a bit more than 1 second. In addition to various fill gas changes, EF4 was set more negative to try to match Bz to the slow current rise, and BR_0 offset was set to -.0005 T, just so the physop could pretend he was doing something. We also switched to upper null, in case something in the bottom divertor was causing trouble. Prior to shot 36, the discharge was not lasting long enough to know about the divertor programming. Shot 39 was the first full length shot of the day, ramping all the way down. For shot 40, we switched to lower single null, and it also ramped all the way down. Sometime around or after shot 7, we noticed that masses 49 and 48 were abnormally high, leading to suspicions of BF_2. All the other signatures (30, 29, 11 and 10, for BF and B respectively) were also present in about the right ratios, indicating we had a flourine problem, probably implicating teflon. At various times during the day we considered stopping, and were preparing for an up-to-helium to allow for camera/borescope inspection. However, progress was just sufficient to convince us to keep banging away. There were no significant power supply or data acquisition problems today. Scorecard: Plasmas 13 (2 full length, none used for the MP) Fizzles 27 Total cycles 40 |
