MP#489 "Damping rate of TAEs near stability threshold with ICRF fast ions"

Goal
****
Confirm anomolous stability behavior of TAEs at moderate ICRF power as observed in conditions of 1070605 and 1070626, as opposed to monotonic decrease in damping rate to the point of instability as observed in 1080110. Seek trophy resonances in representative shots. Fill in the frequency range of non-resonant coupling behavior of the Active MHD diagnostic.

Run Preparation
***************
* Prepare cryopump for last couple shots
* Prepare argon for HIREX
* Setup GPC2 gratings for -5.9 T
* Set CNPA aperture to 208, bias voltage to 45V
* Operate DNB during interval: 0.6:1.5
* Operate Thomson
* Observe CXRS for core boron density measurements
* Operate PCI if available
* Enable the dpcs_ftae2 procedure in DPCS
* Turn on Active MHD and set qAE to 1.5, AE_order to 2

Shot Sequence
*************

Load 1080110012;
Scan RF in 0.5 MW increments from 0.5 to 3. Repeat 2 and 2.5 MW if time permits. If 3MW shot goes into H-mode, postpone to cryopump session at end of run.

9-11
From 1080110012, change right gap to 1.1;
ICRF = 2; 2.5; 3MW

12-14
From 1080110012, change density to nebar=1.4;
ICRF = 2; 2.5; 3MW

The run did not confirm anomolous stability behavior as seen in 1070626; rather a monotonic decrease of damping rate was observed as on 1080110, independent of the configuration, density or outer gap differences between those two runs. The difference in observations between those two runs will still have to be explained. Slow frequency sweeps were accomplished in both configurations to achieve 'trophy' resonances. A wide frequency sweep was achieved in diverted conditions but not in the limited config to examine the background antenna coupling to probes.

Early in the run we tried 3MW shots and had two disruptions; therefore we limited RF to 2.5MW until late in the run, when we attempted higher power again. We had a 3MW shot. Then we prepared the cryopump to be used in conjunction with argon to stay out of H-mode. However this cooling process seems to cause some helium leaks and we had a few bad shots. But we ended with a 3.5MW shot.

Bob Granetz did a great job translating the segments from 1070626020 in 10min 2s (counting his encounter with a garbage can on the way to hit the button).

There were MARFEs in the first seven shots before the density request was decreased to 0.6e20. These may influence the TAE behavior and must be considered in analysis.

Goals not achieved from the run plan were 3MW shots in all conditions and 4MW and 4.5MW shots in the diverted configuration.

The machine ran well today. We ran most of the day with upper divertor
plasmas but also ran inner wall limited almost double null (which Bob
Granetz got set up). Startup was very good with only a couple of
discharges that did not run full length. We had trouble with MARFEs
early in the run. Higher ICRF and a 10% increase in density pretty much
fixed this problem.

Late in the run the cryopump was successfully run again, though it took
several trys and over an hour of work to get it going. We had to run
one no power shot (shot 28) when the pump dumped right before the shot.
Shot 29 was the first shot with the cryopump running. It had early
runaways and died by 0.7 s. I increased the prefill and shot 30 ran
into rampdown with the cryopump and over 3.7 MW of ICRF. So I hope we
are ready for Amanda's run tomorrow. Brian plans to monitor that run
closely. It will be very important to monitor the RGA during tomorrow's run.

Shot 04 was a 50ms, 90 kA "fizzle". Mass49 and other gases pumped away
following this shot (gettering). Neuts/hards saturated from 30 ms on.

Mass49 was generally much lower today than yesterday which was much
better than Tuesday. So the machine is returning to normal.
