MP 543: Exploration of LHCD effects on pedestal and core of H-mode plasmas Session leader: Amanda Hubbard Physics Operator: Bob Granetz Aims: 1) Document the conditions under which LHCD causes changes in H-mode pedestal and core, with goal of understanding the mechanism. (document pedestal, fluctuations, rotation, etc) 2) Optimize the driven current in H-mode, and measure with MSE. OVERNIGHT BORONIZATION REQUIRED - SEE PHYSOP PLAN FOR DETAILS. Run will need ICRF (E+J port) and LHCD (start at 90 degrees). Cryopump will be used on some shots, should be available from about 10 am. 1) Post-boronization RF conditioning. LSN discharge, 600 kA, use to bring up ICRF power to at least 2 MW level. Also bring up LH power. (4-6 shots?) 2) Load shot 1080306008, with Ssep ramp. ICRF on 0.6-1.5 s, LH on 1.1-1.4 secs. Bring up LH power to max available. Compare density to shots on 1080306008. Decide if cryopump is needed; if so, do a comparison with cryo cold. 3) On successive shots, reduce target density and/or raise ICRF power to find maximum confinement and lowest density consistent with STEADY H-modes. Hopefully pumpout effect will be reproduced. Move LH as early in the H-mode as ne allows, and as late as flat top allows. Get MSE data (need steady period before and after LH). 4) LH phase scan: first 'at' accessible limit, then below, then higher (eg 70, 60, 110 degrees). Monitor when pumpout effect occurs or does not. Get MSE data at each phase. If LH effects are significant, try reducing phase after pumpout for max driven current. Results will determine order of following current scan. 5A) Reduce Ip to 450 kA. Repeat small phase scan, starting at 75 degrees or minimum accessible. (4 shots). 5B) Raise Ip to 800 kA. Repeat small phase scan, starting at 90 degrees or minimum accessible. (4 shots) 6) Possible raise Bt a little and repeat some steps, esp if we have not been getting much current drive. |

Session leader plan for 1080404 MP 543: Exploration of LHCD effects on pedestal and core of H-mode plasmas Session leader: Amanda Hubbard Physics Operator: Bob Granetz Aims: 1) Document the conditions under which LHCD causes changes in H-mode pedestal and core, with goal of understanding the mechanism. (document pedestal, fluctuations, rotation, etc) 2) Optimize the driven current in H-mode, and measure with MSE. A disappointing run. We did not succed at the primary aims of the run; the pumpout effect was not clearly reproduced, and we did not see clear evidence of current drive. While the machine and subsystems ran quite well, an operational difference from 1080306 was that we could not, despite the boronization, run steady USN H-modes - got large, metallic, injections every time. Something is wrong with machine conditions. Suspicion is that the LH effects are topology dependent. We did get some discharges (eg 21) where density dropped a little in LHCD, and pedestal relaxed, but not the clear changes of the previous run. Apparently large SOL currents, changing with topology, may be part of this puzzle. More detailed run comments will be added next week. Thanks to all who participated. |

Run summary for Friday 04 Apr 2008
MP543 Exploration of LHCD effects on pedestal and core of H-mode plasmas
Session leader: A. Hubbard
Physics operator: R. Granetz
We tried to reproduce some of the interesting results that we saw the last
time we ran LH into ICRF-heated H-modes (1080306), but this time we didn't
observe the density pumpout, current drive, etc. After tuning up the ICRF
and LH, we started running equilibria that switched from lower null to
upper null by programming a jog in ZCUR. These resulted in multiple short
H-modes. We then tried staying with lower null throughout the ICRF & LH
pulses, and these gave good steady H-modes, but no current drive. A
quick try at upper null again gave short lousy H-modes. Late in the run we
tried transitioning from lower null to double null, and these had longer,
steadier H-modes.
The tokamak, ICRF, LH, DNB, and cryopump systems all worked quite well
today. The only problem was that we had to reduce the LN2 cooling rate on
the machine in order to avoid small N2 leaks. An N2 leak after INIT caused
the only fizzle (shot 09). The reduced cooling rate led to a noticeably
longer time between shots, resulting in a lower shot cycle total than
usual. But since we had only one fizzle and one disruption, we still got a
good amount of useful plasma discharges. Eventually we got down to a
12-14 minute recool time for most cycles.
Scorecard: 23 plasmas
0 duds
1 fizzle
0 power supply tests
0 no-power MDS shot cycles

Total: 24 shot cycles

| Apr 4 2008 09:14:42:000AM | 1080404001 | Amanda Hubbard | First post-boronization recovery shot. 600 kA, LSN.
Rather MARFEy startup, nel up to 8e19 m-2. Got E ramp to 1 MW with only a few trips, little J-port, even less LH power. Lots of junk on RGA. Repeat. |
| Apr 4 2008 09:29:17:437AM | 1080404002 | Amanda Hubbard | Second 'recovery' shot. Note that D-alpha is following ICRF trace, must be a lot of outgassing. Both E and J-port are tripping. Up to 2,1 MW total. Big ne increase, but I'm not sure it was an H-mode.
E-port turned off earlier to aid LH coupling, but it didn't seem to help that. |
| Apr 4 2008 09:44:11:450AM | 1080404003 | Amanda Hubbard | Longer, steadier H-mode on this one. (plus some short ones later in pulse)
nel 7.2e19 m-2 target, 1.1e20 in H-mode. E-port pretty clean, up to 1.1 MW. J up to 2.2 MW, but tripping. Still no LH. Note strong outgassing, Dalpha trace follows ICRF power. Next shot: Move ICRF earlier (0.4 s) , LH later to simplify its coupling. |
| Apr 4 2008 10:01:22:157AM | 1080404004 | Amanda Hubbard | ICRF getting pretty good now, up to 3.3 MW total. long H-mode, but interrupted by an injections or two. Still high D-alpha, seems to be correlated now with J-port, not D.
Bad news is still little LH power. "too much density" (or gas??) Greg is going to pull the launcher back. If that doesn't do it, may be time for the cryopump. |
| Apr 4 2008 10:43:50:953AM | 1080404005 | Amanda Hubbard | ICRF up to 4 MW, only a few trips. Consider that 'conditioned'. But, a big injection at 0.62 secs ends the H-mode. Steady H-mode nel 1.1e20 m-3. ne0 2.5, ne95 ~1.6 e20 (rather high for LHCD).
LHCD a bit better, but still struggling. Next shot: Add Ssep jog to USN, starting at 0.55 secs. Turn ICRF down to 2 MW. LH still after the ICRF for now. |
| Apr 4 2008 10:56:57:420AM | 1080404006 | Amanda Hubbard | Pretty good target shot. Ssep to +5 mm by 0.7 s. nel then drops, 1.18 to 1.09e20 m-2. 2 MW clean J-port, as requested, and no injections.
ne still a bit higher than on 1080306013 (when it was 1.05e20). ne95 1.6e20 m-3. Next shot: Reduce ne target a bit (0.6 to 0.5 e 20 m-2). Greg has pulled back the launcher. |
| Apr 4 2008 11:15:49:450AM | 1080404007 | Amanda Hubbard | A brick from above at about 0.62 seconds ended the first H-mode. Second one got to nel 1.05e20, not bad.
Got clean LH (0.5 MW) after the ICRF. Next shot: Extend ICRF, and move LH into the H-mode. See amazing things. |
| Apr 4 2008 11:28:17:233AM | 1080404008 | Amanda Hubbard | First shot with LH into H-mode (0.9 secs) But, there is an injection about 0.71 secs. nel is low, 1.03 e20 m-3, but rises about 1 seconds, during LH (but not correlated in time).
Next shot: try again, hopefully without the injection. |
| Apr 4 2008 12:01:56:780PM | 1080404010 | Amanda Hubbard | Another early injection disrupts the H-mode, pre LH. But the evidence is that the LH is increasing the SOL density a lot, and the overall density a little.
nel 1.0e20 early in LH, rising to 1.1 e20. Take another shot with LH pulse shorter and later, to hopefully get steadier conditions pre LH and see the effect more clearly. |
| Apr 4 2008 01:19:41:000PM | 1080404013 | Amanda Hubbard | Still rather unsteady, radiative H-mode, with at least some injections, 3 H-modes. This is not what we want! No ne drop at Ssep jog, no real drop with LHCD (600 kW0 either.
Going in the right direction at least. Next: raise target some more, to 0.7e20 m-2, and LH power request. |
| Apr 4 2008 02:00:54:903PM | 1080404014 | Amanda Hubbard |
Even with higher target density, getting even shorter, more radiative H-modes. Acting like it is unboronized. Got 800 kA LH, but in L-mode phase. Next, try LSN shot to see if it is steadier. Also turn on ICRF later. |
| Apr 4 2008 02:18:09:140PM | 1080404015 | Amanda Hubbard | Much better. Steady H-mode with low Prad. LSN (-5 mm) all the time, ICRF on later at 0.6 sec (not sure which change helped, but we'll take it).
LH 800 kW, on 1.1-1.3 secs. Prad rises a bit. Not much prompt ne response, rises later at ~ 1.25 secs. Next: move LH earlier, try to raise power. |
| Apr 4 2008 02:38:29:687PM | 1080404016 | Amanda Hubbard | LH on earlier (1.0 sec). Another nice steady H-mode, ne dropping slightly, and Prad low and steady, before the H-mode.
Prad rises slowly with LHCD, Tedge rises first, then drops. No sign of current drive. Density rises, but later (starting ~ 1.2 secs). Not the effects we were expecting from prior run, but interesting. Dennis reports large SOL currents. Next shot: Raise N// to make sure waves are accessible (to 100 degrees, has been 90 up to now). |
| Apr 4 2008 03:00:01:407PM | 1080404017 | Amanda Hubbard | Pretty similar, despite N// change. Prad rises with LHCD, ne pretty steady . At 1.3 secs, when LH off, Prad drops, as does Tedge, but core ne rises.
Again, no evident current drive. |
| Apr 4 2008 03:17:09:900PM | 1080404018 | Amanda Hubbard | Tried jog to USN at 0.8 secs, to get back to configuration of 1080306. Bad idea! First, nel does not pump, it rises. Second, we get back the big impurity increases, short nasty H-modes etc. USN simply does not seem accessible today.
Try near DN next shot. |
| Apr 4 2008 03:42:12:773PM | 1080404019 | Amanda Hubbard | Near DN (+- few mm). Intermediate, and rather inconclusive results. Multiple H-modes, higher Prad than LSN but not huge injections.
On the last one, with LHCD (at 1.1 sec), Prad rises slower, and nel steady until 1.3 secs. Possibly doing something positive?? Next: Start LSN, sweep to DN DURING LH pulse to see topology effect more clearly. |
| Apr 4 2008 03:48:26:650PM | 1080404020 | Amanda Hubbard | Started lower null, LH on at 1 second. Ssep sweeping up later (1.1-1.25 s)
ICRF 1.75 MW. nel drops a bit in the LH pulse, then stays steady in DN/USN phase. (9.5e19) |
| Apr 4 2008 04:16:45:713PM | 1080404021 | Amanda Hubbard | Started lower null, LH on at 0.9 second. Ssep sweeping up later (1.1-1.25 s)
ICRF 1.75 MW. This time, density does drop a little. Jerry says pedestal "relaxing". Small Vloop drop when LH on, 0.8 to 0.61 V (then to 0.9, so not very convincing). Big injection at 1.1 seconds ends the H-mode. |
| Apr 4 2008 04:33:01:463PM | 1080404022 | Amanda Hubbard | 460 kA. Started LSN. Got lower H-mode density, as expected.
nel 8 to 7.5 e19 m-2, ne95 10^20 m-3. |
| Apr 4 2008 08:23:47:983AM | 1080404101 | Greg Wallace | Test shot OK. 0.030" of shielding installed. |
| Physics Operator Comments | |||
| Apr 3 2008 05:46:53:900PM | Robert Granetz | Loaded from shot 1080403025. Imported 1080306008 seg 2 into seg 2. Changed ZCUR programming to keep it constant at -0.014 m, rather than jogging up to -0.001 m. Also reduced pre-fill to 20 ms to compensate for overnight boronization. Also turn off the procedure DPCS_FTAE2. | |
| Apr 4 2008 09:09:28:983AM | 1080404001 | Robert Granetz | Shot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.6 MA, 5.4 T, LSN. Prf=0.5-1 MW, all from E-port. J faulted out. LH faulted badly. Startup sucked. Next shot: increase pre-fill by 3 ms |
| Apr 4 2008 09:23:24:517AM | 1080404002 | Robert Granetz | Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. ICRF and LH are still faulting and adjusting their tuning. Good startup. Next shot: no DPCS changes; continue tuning the ICRF and LH |
| Apr 4 2008 09:43:01:547AM | 1080404003 | Robert Granetz | Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Still staying with the lower null until the ICRF gets to 2 MW and the LH tunes up. Next shot: no DPCS changes; move ICRF start time a little earlier (to t=0.4 s); also increase outer gap prior to t=1.2 s by changing CLEARIN programming |
| Apr 4 2008 09:53:32:263AM | 1080404004 | Robert Granetz | Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.5 -> 3.5 MW from E and J; only a few faults. LH is still faulting a lot. Cell access to move LH grill out a bit. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Apr 4 2008 10:34:07:750AM | 1080404005 | Robert Granetz | Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf= 3 -> 4 MW. LH still faulting alot. Next shot: turn on ZCUR jog...ramp 13 mm up from t=0.55 to 0.70 s; increase pre-fill 1 ms; turn off E-port antenna to reduce ICRF power |
| Apr 4 2008 10:52:37:813AM | 1080404006 | Robert Granetz | Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. LSN -> USN. Prf=2 MW steady (J only). P_LH=0.5 MW. Better startup. Cell access to pull LH grill back some more. Next shot: decrease nl_04 to 0.5e20 m-2 (from 0.6) |
| Apr 4 2008 11:12:38:030AM | 1080404007 | Robert Granetz | Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. LSN -> USN. Good 2 MW of ICRF. Good clean 0.5 MW of LH. An impurity injection comes down from the upper divertor by J-port, but the plasma survived. Good startup. Next shot: no DPCS changes; extend ICRF and LH so that they overlap |
| Apr 4 2008 11:26:37:250AM | 1080404008 | Robert Granetz | Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Steady 2 MW from J-port. P_LH=0.5 MW. Next shot: no DPCS changes; repeat w/more LH power |
| Apr 4 2008 11:35:35:687AM | 1080404009 | Robert Granetz | Shot 09 -- Fizzle. Small N2 leak shortly before the shot. Back off on LN2 cooling. Next shot: try again |
| Apr 4 2008 11:56:30:233AM | 1080404010 | Robert Granetz | Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good startup. Prf=2 MW. P_LH=0.5 MW. We'll keep the LN2 pumping speed down for the remainder of the day in order to avoid any problems with N2 leaks from machine cooling. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Apr 4 2008 12:04:33:780PM | 1080404010 | Robert Granetz | N2 is coming up again just as I was going to hit the READY button. We'll have to decrease the pumping again until it comes back down. I won't run shot 11 until it's back down. |
| Apr 4 2008 12:48:34:810PM | 1080404011 | Robert Granetz | Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good startup. Prf=2 MW. P_LH=0.5 MW. Next shot: cryopump will be on for the next shot. Monitor N2 level before hitting the READY button. Increase pre-fill to 50 ms to compensate for cryopump. |
| Apr 4 2008 01:04:51:233PM | 1080404012 | Robert Granetz | Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Lots of short H-modes. Prf=2 MW. P_LH=0.45 MW. Cryopump on. Next shot: increase nl_04 back to 0.6e20 m-2; add 1 ms to pre-fill increase P_LH |
| Apr 4 2008 01:13:51:110PM | 1080404013 | Robert Granetz | Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2 MW. P_LH=0.6-0.7 MW. Poor startup. Next shot: increase nl_04 to 0.7e20 m-2; add 2 ms to pre-fill; still more LH power |
| Apr 4 2008 01:44:47:810PM | 1080404014 | Robert Granetz | Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2 MW. P_LH=0.8 MW. Short H-modes. Next shot: stay LSN by getting rid of ZCUR jog; add 1 ms to pre-fill |
| Apr 4 2008 02:11:25:810PM | 1080404015 | Robert Granetz | Shot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. LSN for the entire shot. Long steady EDA H-mode. Prf=2 MW. P_LH=0.9 MW. Startup sucks. Next shot: add 2 more ms to pre-fill; delay RCUR switch to upper x-point reference point |
| Apr 4 2008 02:32:48:030PM | 1080404016 | Robert Granetz | Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Long steady H-mode with some density pumpout. Prf=2 MW. P_LH=0.9 MW. Next shot: add 2 ms to pre-fill; this load will also load the change that I meant to make to CLEARIN for shot 16, but didn't load. (See logbook entry.) |
| Apr 4 2008 02:50:43:940PM | 1080404017 | Robert Granetz | Shot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. Long steady H-mode. Prf=2.2 MW. P_LH=0.9 MW. Next shot: put back the LSN -> USN jog in ZCUR, this time starting at t=0.80 s and finishing at t=0.875 s. Also move change in CLEARIN ZXA reference back to t=0.9 s. |
| Apr 4 2008 03:09:11:330PM | 1080404018 | Robert Granetz | Shot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.2 MW. P_LH=0.9 MW. Multiple short H-modes...not what we want. Lousy startup. Next shot: try double null (start LSN, then set ZCUR to -0.006 m at t=0.64 s and keep it there); move CLEARIN ZXA ref change off to 2.2 s; increase pre-fill by 2 ms |
| Apr 4 2008 03:35:45:603PM | 1080404019 | Robert Granetz | Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Close to double null for most of the flattop. Prf=2.2 MW. P_LH=1 MW. Several short H-modes. Better startup. Next shot: delay ZCUR jog until t=1.1 s (ending at 1.175 s) |
| Apr 4 2008 03:54:02:103PM | 1080404020 | Robert Granetz | Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. LSN -> DN around t=1.1 s. Prf=1.7-1.8 MW. P_LH=1 MW. Good startup (2 in a row, finally). Next shot: no DPCS changes; start LH earlier |
| Apr 4 2008 04:05:24:760PM | 1080404021 | Robert Granetz | Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.7 MW. Lower null period had a better H-mode than the double null period. P_LH=0.9-1 MW. Absolutely gorgeous startup. Next shot: reduce Ip to 0.45 MA |
| Apr 4 2008 04:42:08:463PM | 1080404022 | Robert Granetz | Shot 22 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.0 s due to an injection. Ip=0.47 MA. Lousy startup. Next shot: get rid of ZCUR jog so that plasma will stay lower null; keep pre-fill as is (disruption recovery) |
| Apr 4 2008 04:47:41:260PM | 1080404023 | Robert Granetz | Shot 23 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ip=0.47 MA. Another big injection around t=1 s almost killed the plasma again. Next shot: go back to 0.6 MA and LSN -> DN jog by reloading seg 2 from shot 21. Also enable argon valve with a 75 ms pulse; add 1 ms to pre-fill |
| Apr 4 2008 04:57:06:743PM | 1080404024 | Robert Granetz | Shot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.6 MA. LSN -> DN. Prf=2.1 MW. Good startup (w/cryopump). End of run. |
