| The goal of this run is to track the changes in momentum through the pedestal as the plasma is jogged vertically up and down. This vertical jog creates a change in SSEP pushing the plasma from LSN to USN and back. The same shot will be repeated several times to collect data from multiple diagnostics and then we will move to a new gap and repeat again. Then if there's time we'll change the current in order to change the temperature of the pedestal and see if that affects the transport of moment.

| The run today explored the effect of the SSEP sweep as a continuation of MP537 which ran on 3/14/08 as well (for a very limited number of shots). Today's run went much better in terms of reproducible plasmas. The morning was spent trying to collect sufficient data in 'kinetics mode' for the CXRS diagnostic. Unfortunately the signal to noise ratio was worse than expected even with a significant amount of puff being directed at the plasma.
By shot 14 we had collected the best we were going to get in 'kinetics mode' and returned to 'frame transfer' mode, which is the standard setup for the diagnostic. The Mach probes participated in the plasmas until shot #9, wherein a blown fuse (most likely) resulted in the loss of power to all the controller boards. Several more shots were taken in frame transfer mode to really secure the gaps and the sweep. By shot #19, the DBeta CXRS diagnostic had stopped throwing errors and data was being collected at both the high-field and low-field GPI. Shots #20-21 complete part B of the run plan, reducing the inner gap by several millimeters. Hopefully we can see a change in the position of the 'null' spot on these shots. Shot #22 disrupted after the first sweep as we attempted to raise the current to 1MA. Thanks to Steve, the next few plasmas survived and we secured a data point for part C of the plan. Finally we bumped up the density to 1e20 and crossed our fingers. The plasma ran well and we caught a final data point for a modified part F. The staff was gracious enough to allow us to take a final locked mode and pellet shot at the end of the run. The plasma went and the pellets were fired. An excellent day in terms of plasmas overall. |

Physop summary for 1080410
MP#537 Momentum impulse from rapid ssep changes
SL: Marr (assisted by BLIP)
PO: wolfe
This was a moderately successful run, although I was unable to
get the fine simultaneous control of the fast SSEP sweep and gaps
that we had hoped for. The inner and outer gaps were both subject
to thrashing during the zcur sweep. I tried lots of tricks to try
to ameliorate this, unsuccessfully. The best seemed to be to
program a step in clearin of -2mm, as had been done on 1080314,
but this was only partially successful. I think the fundamental
problem is the mismatch between the EF2 response time and the chopper
and 13.8kV thyristor supplies. We did manage to tame the overshoots
and ringing on the ssep sweep somewhat by adding extra points on the
zcur sweep program, but this may have made the gaps worse.
We ended up (after shot#19) running progamming based on 1080314009 in
segment 2 and the more tuned sweeps developed today for the return sweep
in segment 3, which turned on at 0.9sec. Future Physops should note
that both seg2 and 3 are needed to re-run these cases. After
shot#21, seg2 may contain the correct programming for the second half
of the shot, but this was not tested.
We also discovered (the hard way) that the zcur sweep in 11msec that
works at 800kA causes disruptions at 1MA. EFC railed. That surprised
me, but it sort of makes sense since the required voltage/current response
must go like Ip*deltaZ. Shots#24 and 25 were 1MA shots with the same
excursion but with half the sweep rate, which did not rail.
Shot#26 was the canonical 800kA HIREX locked mode calibration shot, plus
pellets by Brock in rampdown.
Magnet cooling was being run at 10psi (sometimes 12psi) on the pump,
but was nonetheless slow to get the C-right turn cold. Typical between
shot cooling times were >15minutes. However, the time for pcs changes and the
time for fiber changes by the SL and friends was often longer than this,
so in reality not much time was lost. The cyopump people (Brian, Frank,
Sue) did a good job of timing the cooldown so they were ready when it was
time to take the shot. Only one shot (#3) fizzled because of cryo burp.
The 49 peak on the RGA was pretty much gone today. Maybe all the
disruptions yesterday cleaned up the remaining teflon. Didn't see any
N2 leaks but these may have been masked by the cryo. At any rate, we
did not experience the cryo saturation effect today.
There was one computer delay when Josh had to reboot pcdaqeng1, and a
briefer hang when we lost the state information, which may have been
a network problem.
No time lost to cell accesses today. No power supply problems.

Beginning setup for Thurs 10-Apr-2008
MP#537 momentum impulse from rapid ssep changes
PO: wolfe
SL: Marr
Load from 1080314009.
This shot has +ve-going sweep in zcur at [.699,.710] and -ve sweep
at [1.00,1.02]; limits are [-.013,+.003147]. I have no idea where
the weird upper limit comes from. Seems to have been inherited from
my setup on 1080227032, so I must have hand-drawn the upper value,
or else had a finger slip. The 16mm/11msec is consistent with what
I was doing in Feb. The longer negative sweep was done to avoid
disruptions on 3/14. Leave these speeds, move the times per SL
request.
OK, According to Kenny's latest email, he wants the values moved to
0.74 and 1.22sec. I'm going to assume he means those are the
start times. Move these points to [.740,.751] and [1.220,1.240]
respectively. The CLEARIN trace has manual adjustments at times
[.710,.720] and [1.000,1.010] respctively. I guess the second one
should have been slower, but didn't get changed. The limits are
[-.002,-.004]. Move the times to [.740,.751] and [1.220,1.240].
Copy to wires 10 and 11.
Now check on the clearin observer times in wire 4. These are at 0.7 and
1.0 sec, and the upper null uses zxa=.39,rxa=.544. Change the times
to .74 and 1.22
Now look at the startup on this shot. It's got a 50msec pg4 puff, ok
for cryopump, maybe a tad low. RCUR=1000., Br_0=0., EF4=-1340. Leave
these for now; recent history suggests Br_0 to -.0005 may be better.
Raise PG4 from 50 to 55msec.
Back to seg2, Case A wants nl04=8e19, Ip=800kA. The load shot has 8.5e19,
so change it to 8.0. Look at the actuals on 1080314009, and it is only
at 7.8e19 with the old programming. Back to the edit wire and recall
the nl04 observer to pick up the current (??) calibration. I need to
fix custom so it fills in a date instead of "today" in the alg version
field. Maybe this will work, if not I'll change it again. He's asking
for a 10mm left gap, the old shot looks like 11mm. Run it like this and
see if he really meant to change it by 1mm. Case B calls for 7mm.
Otherwise, all the changes are to be density and current.

Shot#1: pressure 2.8e-8 at INIT before first shot (cryo on)
plasma full length. no runaways. nl04~7.5e19, we're puffing
through pulse. One early injection .14sec
SSEp goes from -4mm to +6mm little bit of an overshoot.
Reverse sweep goes from +8mm to -5mm, but then swings back to zero
at 1.26sec. I don't see why. Outer gap is also thrashing.
Next: enable argon, hirex gate valve
|
| Apr 10 2008 09:44:47:913AM | 1080410002 | Steve Wolfe |
Shot#2: Make a two step sweep on reverse: -.005 at 1.23, then to -.013
at 1.260. Also on upward sweep, .745 to -.005, then +.003 at .755
Hold off on changes to gaps until we see how this works
plasma with pokes. Seem to have gotten rid of the overshoot on reverse
sweep, but it ends up oscillating about -2.4mm (on ssep).
Zmagx is going from +1.2 to -0.1cm according to fast efit,
from +1 to -0.5 on the slow. I'm not sure if this is just because
it's aliasing over the oscillations or what.
Next: make the first leg go further than halfway

| Apr 10 2008 09:58:56:803AM | 1080410003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: Upsweep middle point to .747,-.001, leave endpoint at .755,.003 Reverse at 1.235,-.008; end point earlier, to 1.25 from 1.26, didn't need to be as slow as on #2, I don't think Argon up to 125msec fizzle. Cryo wasn't really ready, pressure ended up at .15mTorr Note: IGT in INIT was 6e-7 instead of on the 8 scale. Should have had them regen a third time? |
| Apr 10 2008 10:18:54:663AM | 1080410004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: Try again same pcs setup pressure gets down to 7e-8 at ready; delay for I2t on EFC reading. Upsweep middle point to .747,-.001, leave endpoint at .755,.003 Reverse at 1.235,-.008; end point earlier, to 1.25 from 1.26, didn't need to be as slow as on #2, I don't think Argon up to 125msec plasma full length. Bad bounce in startup, almost lost it. Next: Drop left gap by 1mm, try to fix overshoot pg4 to 59sec, raise argon to 200msec |
| Apr 10 2008 10:41:43:570AM | 1080410005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: Initial value from -.002 to -.005, after sweep from -.004 to -.005 (no jump) same at the end. Smaller clearin all around. Rcur down by .0015 everywhere .656 to .6545 Also drop zcur by 3mm to get lower starting and endpoints on ssep by 2mm Drag whole zcur trace down by 3mm pg4 to 59sec, raise argon to 200msec IGT=8e-8 at INIT Result: plasma with pokes Ssep is now -.6 to .5 to .3: want -.5 to +.5 reverse is +.5 to -.3:want +.5 to -.5 Need to make end zcur points different for up and down |

Result: plasma, fast efit is coming in very slow on this one Looks like starting and ending ssep are around -7mm, upper +5mm. Reverse sweep looks right on, upward starts a bit low, but covers the range. Left gap is thrashing early. Delay clearin reference to .747, later one to 1.225 |
| Apr 10 2008 11:22:09:257AM | 1080410007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: Left gap was thrashing early. Delay clearin reference switch to .747, later one to 1.225 argon should be back on at 200msec puff pressure was 1.3e-7 at INIT, up to 2e-7 by PULSE plasma ok, Brian says there was helium coming out, "not a lot", but apparently enough. Gap is still thrashing, didn't seem to notice the change. I did load it. I think I need to put back the compensating jog in clearin that I took out several shots ago. |
| Apr 10 2008 11:35:33:270AM | 1080410008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: Nl04 to 1.0e20 Try moving initial clearin switch to .735 before the sweep! It's notobvious what's causing the thrash, could well be the ef2 part of slow zcur. Plasma: getting a marfe when it goes to upper null, density coming down to .86, needs more puff to keep at 1.0 Inner gap still goes down to .7cm during sweep. The early switch probably made it worse. Maybe if I delay until its already solidly in upper null, like at 0.77sec |
| Apr 10 2008 11:54:56:083AM | 1080410008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Delay clearin switch to 0.77sec Raise pg3 in seg2 to 40 and extend to 1.3sec Add a zcur point at .77,.003 Delay for reboot of pcdaqeng1. Recool now at 23 minutes, IGT down to 8.7e-8 but cryopump says they will want a 3 min warning for a regen before we shoot. |
| Apr 10 2008 12:08:46:583PM | 1080410009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Delay clearin switch to 0.77sec Raise pg3 in seg2 to 40 and extend to 1.3sec Add a zcur point at .77,.003 Got the ok from jas at 26minutes, will regen cryopump first plasma, still marfing actually worse, but got the density up, as requested. Inner gap still thrashes down to .6cm during sweep. I can try putting in a positive jog along with the sweep, or a little ahead, but the EF2 just can't keep up with the chopper. |
| Apr 10 2008 12:25:19:427PM | 1080410010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: Put jog in clearin: times [.735,.740,.750,.760], values=[-.005,-.001,-.001,-.005] fizzle? pressure looks ok. maybe a bounce, but it looks like it's moving in? Maybe a little high? next: Br_0 to -.0005, pg4 down to 50msec |
| Apr 10 2008 12:48:00:303PM | 1080410012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Br_0 to -.0005, pg4 down to 50msec Put jog in clearin: times [.735,.740,.750,.760], values=[-.005,-.001,-.001,-.005] plasma full lengthm but marfes the whole time it's in USN and again in rampdown. Inner gap is still doing exactly the same thing! Doesn't even notice the little jog. Try turning OFF the P gain on clearin during the sweep, just leave the intergral error |
| Apr 10 2008 12:59:33:040PM | 1080410012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: Try turning OFF the P gain on clearin during the sweep, just leave the intergral error plasma with some runaways early. No Fprobe this time, they've got an electronics problem. No change on the inner gap thrash! |
| Apr 10 2008 01:11:30:210PM | 1080410013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: Move clearin switch to .75sec, during gap in P gain PG4 from 50 to 55msec plasma, still no change in the gap, maybe a little less overshoot on the recovery. Next: decrease nl04 to 9e19 |
| Apr 10 2008 01:41:12:617PM | 1080410014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14:decrease nl04 to 9e19 Try putting back the P gain and dropping the A integrator gate during the transition; this may affect the zcur I gain too. We are having a long delay (24 minutes and counting) for a fiber change and wavelength calibration. Now need to regen the cryopump before we go. plasma, still had some marfe, at least it didn't disrupt when I blanked the I gate. Did it help? Doesn't look like it, looks just the same: down to -6mm, up to 13mm,even worse! |
| Apr 10 2008 01:55:55:710PM | 1080410015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: Put the integrator gate back, Considering going back to 1080314009 when this doesn't work. Same as earlier. Next: import seg 2 from 1080314009 and move fast efit to .69 |
| Apr 10 2008 02:13:02:583PM | 1080410016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Import seg2 from 1080314009 (sweep at 0.7 and 1.0sec), fast efit bursts at 0.69,.99sec. Supposedly this was steadier gap. It has the clearin waveform stepping up and down during the upper null phase. fizzle. too much puff? Back down to 50msec on pg4. |

Should look just like on 1080314009 except transposed onto new timebase Seg 2 off seg3 on Efit times to .735 and 1.21 plasma: Still thrashing on the first sweep. |
| Apr 10 2008 03:07:29:380PM | 1080410019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: Keep the first sweep from 17 (segment2) se second sweep from seg 3. Turn seg2 back on, seg3 time to 0.9sec efit first burst back to .69 Now move both smaller by 3mm and rcur by 1.5mm It's now really crazy to be running these in different segments but do it anyway for now. There is a discontinuity in the clearin and rcur values now, seg2 has rcur=0.6545 and seg3 has .6530 seg2 has clearin dropping from -.005 to -.007, seg3 starts -.010 and rises to -.008. Plasma survived. inner gap starts at 13mm on first sweep. That's not what they want. Second sweep is ok. |
| Apr 10 2008 03:30:33:147PM | 1080410020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: Change seg2 to have same values before the sweep as seg3 does now: Rcur from .6545 to .653, clearin to -.008 At this point, I could move things all into seg2, but hold off. Waiting for Alex, so go ahead and start making seg2 clearin and zcur look like seg3 after .9sec 1.22,.0002;1.235,-.0109;1.25,-.019;1.6,-.019. Clearin change at 1.22 These changes are made in scratch but not loaded for shot#20 Plasma, marfe, gaps look ok on slow scale, have to see what it looks like on fast. Might need a bit smaller on inner gap at first sweep still? |
| Apr 10 2008 03:52:03:617PM | 1080410021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Change clearin point at .428sec in seg2 down to -.008 Move seg2 rcur out by 1.5mm to .6545 again to reduce early sweep outer gap. Changes noted under shot20 are loaded, but seg3 is still on, so they aren't in effect for now. plasma ok, after a brief delay for computer hang. outer gap looks a little better. Next: raise Ip to 1MA |
| Apr 10 2008 04:16:37:303PM | 1080410022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: raise Ip to 1MA, left gap back to 1cm Increase clearin by 3mm, rcur by 1.5mm both segs 2 and 3 to go back to 10mm inner gap (I hope) Plasma disrupts at .76sec, right after the sweep. Seems to overshoot in ssep, big thrash but seems to recover, then slams up and down again. Basically railing the chopper rail to rail. Need to slow down or limit the magnitude of the sweep. |
| Apr 10 2008 04:28:03:100PM | 1080410023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: Decrease sweep in seg2 (positive sweep) to upper value of 0 instead of +.003. Leave second sweep alone (seg3) Decrease pg4 to 47msec plasma all the way through. Still has an early marfe. Still rails efc on first sweep, but survives. SSEP is still ringing all the way back to zero. Need to slow it down more. Next: slow it down to 16mm in 20msec |
| Apr 10 2008 04:43:51:540PM | 1080410024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: slow it down to 16mm in 20msec, plasma full length. EFC doesn't rail this time. Next: raise nl04 to 1.2e20 |
| Apr 10 2008 05:01:49:490PM | 1080410025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: raise nl04 to 1.2e20 Add a midpoint on the upsweep at .715,-.001, move endpoint from .72 to .725 (value .003) Speed up current rise (1MA at .3sec instead of .35) ssep still has an overshoot, have to live with it Next: locked mode shot for HIREX, pellet injection. |
| Apr 10 2008 05:19:38:003PM | 1080410026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: Locked mode calibration shot for hirex import seg3 from 1080410001 turn off seg2, leave seg3 on plasma. Seems to be a pellet at 1.5sec, also at 1.72? Locked mode around 0.75 END OF RUN. |
