Session leader plan for 1080414 MP 553: Producing the "hybrid scenario" on C-Mod with LHCD Session Leader: George Sips (IPP Garching), Amanda Hubbard Physics Operator: Jim Irby BORONIZATION REQUESTED - see Phys Op plan for details. ICRF (J, E and possibly D-port) and LHCD required. Cryopump should be available, but will not be used on first shots. 1) Discharge setup and boron recovery: Load 1080221010 (early divert time in current rise). Adjust Ip ramp to reach 600 kA at about 300 ms. Adjust ne target to 6e19 m-2. Bring up ICRF and LHCD, in separate time windows of flat top for conditioning. ~ 5-6 shots. 2) Apply RF early at modest power levels 1-2 MW during the ramp up phase, - Apply LHCD from ~ 0.1 secs - Main aim for this stage: Delay q(0) close to the start of the flat top. 3) Increase plasma current to ~800kA to achieve q95~4.5 4) Scan density to achieve steady H-modes during the flat top phase. High power (~3 MW, from J and E) during the flat top phase (initially not too early to see q(0) evolution). 5) Leaving the front end of the discharge constant at constant reliable input power during the flat top phase: Perform a dedicated timing scan of the start of high power additional heating. This is timing relative to the evolution of the q-profile. Discharges with early heating would heat before q(0) reaches 1, discharges with late heating would have q(0)<1. 6) Optimize the most favorable heating time (maximum H98) and apply maximum heating power and LHCD (highest beta available). Select N// based on accessibility limit. 7) Comparison discharges without LHCD during the high power phase. If time permits, or if machine conditions do not appear suitable for high confinement H-modes above, may devote some discharges to completing MP 546: ITER ramp down scenario demonstration, picking up from run 1080409. See Plans from that run for details. |

| If we switch to MP496, High Performance Operation at Ip>1.2 MA, at the end of the day:
start from 1080409030 (1.35 MA, USN) - probably needs different power supply settings relative to what we had earlier in the day raise B-toroidal to 5.6 Tesla (check the plc limit) Go for 4.5 MW ICRF, steady from .7 to 1.2 seconds, then off Speed up the Ip rampdown to be about 2 MA/sec, still starting at 1.15 seconds (segment 3, I believe) Start the TF rampdown at 1.2 seconds (segment 3, again, I think) decrease ZXU by 5 mm decrease upper triangularity shot by shot, increasing RXU ~10 mm at a time (starting with an increase for the first shot). Keep an eye on q_95, which was just below 3 for 1080409030. The idea is to try to destabilize large ELMs before the radiated power kills the H-mode. We've decided to continue with the original MP for today, and will not attempt any MP496 shots. |

| Many items completed of the run plan:
1. Tune Ip rise to 600kA, while conditioning the ICRH and LHCD systems shots #005 - #010): - Plasma position modified for clean X-point formation just before 0.2s. - In ohmic conditions, quick look at the effect of the density on the delay of the sawteeth (modest effect) 2. Apply LHCD during the current rise phase: - Start at 0,2 s., extend pulse length: #011, #014 clearly delaying the sawteeth - Start at 0,15s, no clear advantage compared to starting at 0.2 s. (#015), - Apply 1MW of ICRH during LHCD in current rise phase: #016, #017 showed marked density rise adding 1MW ICRH, earlier sawteeth, compared to LHCD allone. - Increase LHCD power starting at 0.2 s. (#018, #019). After this, decided not to operate at maximum power to obtain relaible settings for timing scan. - Some irreproducible first sawtooth timings under similar conditions: Pulses #012, #013 and #018, showed earlier sawteeth compared to #011 ans #014 in otherwise similar conditions. Never really resolved but later during the run day the settings seem to produce stable discharges with delayed saawteeth (may be related to LHCD power level) 3. Timing scan of the high power phase: - Starting at 0.3 s.: #020 to #025 (some difficulties with RF trips) - Starting at 0.4 s.: #027 - Starting at 0.5 s.: #029 to #032 - Starting at 0.6 s.: #018, #019 (and #011, #014) - Starting at 0.7 s.: #033 Heating later clearly gives higher stored energy. The LHCD preheat does change to initial rise of Wplasma and the way the discharge enters the H-mode. Optimum timing seems to be 0.5-0.6 s. 4. Effect of LHCD: - With LHCD: Longest delay of the sawteeth is ~ 570ms (seee #033) - No LHCD in current rise: Clear sawteeth at 250ms, different Wplasma evolution as documented for the 0,5s start time of the ICRH (compare #029, #31, #032) - Use LHCD in the current rise, but turn off when ICRH comes on: Still a difference is observed, so not only LH power during H-mode phase: Compare #034 with #029 to #032. 5. Go to 800kA: #035 Keeping the LHCD timing and density during the current rise the same, the current rise was extended to reach 800kA at 400ms. LHCD still manages to delay the sawteeth untill 500ms. Performance of the plasma could not the verfied as ICRH trips in this last pulse. In conclusion: Good run with lots of useful data. AND good basis for future experiments (physics stuidies an/or performance optimisation of the Hybrid). |

| Our first plasma attempt was shot 04 which fizzled (90 kA) from startup
shot 1080221010. A plasma was obtained on shot 05 after changing RCUR from 0 to 1000, and tweaking down the gas. Several shots were then used to condition the ICRF and LH and make a small adjustment in the plasma shape. There were no more fizzles until shot 22, after which we got into a fizzle/plasma cycle. This problem seems to have been cured by a shot-by-shot deduction in the fill pressure in 1 or 2 ms increments. Some shots actually displayed no change or even an increase in fill pressure at t=10 ms following a reduction in the prefill request. So the fill was reduced shot-by-shot until clear reductions were seen. Unfortunately that process gave us an extra four fizzles. RCUR was also changed from 1000 to 1800 and then back to 1400 during this time to help with bounces. The prefill may have just been a too high most of the day and became critically so late in the day. Amanda asked that the boronization be extended to the inner wall for the first time this campaign, and it certainly seemed to be a very successful application. Injections were generally much less of an issue, and metallic impurity lines were reported to be at a very low level. Problems: We had to reboot servers, which was followed by three test shots. We started tests well before the run and only lost about 15 minutes of run time. Cooling was an issue later in the run. We had a very low level leak most of the day that got worse as attempts were made to speed up the cooling.
