MP 553: Producing the "hybrid scenario" on C-Mod with LHCD

Session Leader: George Sips (IPP Garching), Amanda Hubbard
Physics Operator: Jim Irby

BORONIZATION REQUESTED - see Phys Op plan for details.

ICRF (J, E and possibly D-port) and LHCD required.
Cryopump should be available, but will not be used on first shots.

1) Discharge setup and boron recovery:

Load 1080221010 (early divert time in current rise). Adjust Ip ramp to reach 600 kA at about 300 ms. Adjust ne target to 6e19 m-2. Bring up ICRF and LHCD, in separate time windows of flat top for conditioning. ~ 5-6 shots.

2) Apply RF early at modest power levels 1-2 MW during the ramp up phase,
- Apply LHCD from ~ 0.1 secs
- Main aim for this stage: Delay q(0) close to the start of the flat top.

3) Increase plasma current to ~800kA to achieve q95~4.5

4) Scan density to achieve steady H-modes during the flat top phase. High power (~3 MW, from J and E) during the flat top phase (initially not too early to see q(0) evolution).

5) Leaving the front end of the discharge constant at constant reliable input power during the flat top phase:

Perform a dedicated timing scan of the start of high power additional heating. This is timing relative to the evolution of the q-profile. Discharges with early heating would heat before q(0) reaches 1, discharges with late heating would have q(0)<1.

6) Optimize the most favorable heating time (maximum H98) and apply maximum heating power and LHCD (highest beta available). Select N// based on accessibility limit.

7) Comparison discharges without LHCD during the high power phase.

If time permits, or if machine conditions do not appear suitable for high confinement H-modes above, may devote some discharges to completing MP 546: ITER ramp down scenario demonstration, picking up from run 1080409. See Plans from that run for details.

If we switch to MP496, High Performance Operation at Ip>1.2 MA, at the end of the day:

start from 1080409030 (1.35 MA, USN) - probably needs different power supply settings relative to what we had earlier in the day
raise B-toroidal to 5.6 Tesla (check the plc limit)
Go for 4.5 MW ICRF, steady from .7 to 1.2 seconds, then off
Speed up the Ip rampdown to be about 2 MA/sec, still starting at 1.15 seconds (segment 3, I believe)
Start the TF rampdown at 1.2 seconds (segment 3, again, I think)
decrease ZXU by 5 mm

decrease upper triangularity shot by shot, increasing RXU ~10 mm at a time (starting with an increase for the first shot). Keep an eye on q_95, which was just below 3 for 1080409030.

The idea is to try to destabilize large ELMs before the radiated power kills the H-mode.

We've decided to continue with the original MP for today, and will not attempt any MP496 shots.

Many items completed of the run plan:

1. Tune Ip rise to 600kA, while conditioning the ICRH and LHCD systems shots #005 - #010):
- Plasma position modified for clean X-point formation just before 0.2s.
- In ohmic conditions, quick look at the effect of the density on the delay of the sawteeth (modest effect)

2. Apply LHCD during the current rise phase:
- Start at 0,2 s., extend pulse length: #011, #014 clearly delaying the sawteeth
- Start at 0,15s, no clear advantage compared to starting at 0.2 s. (#015),
- Apply 1MW of ICRH during LHCD in current rise phase: #016, #017 showed marked density rise adding 1MW ICRH, earlier sawteeth, compared to LHCD allone.
- Increase LHCD power starting at 0.2 s. (#018, #019). After this, decided not to operate at maximum power to obtain relaible settings for timing scan.
- Some irreproducible first sawtooth timings under similar conditions: Pulses #012, #013 and #018, showed earlier sawteeth compared to #011 ans #014 in otherwise similar conditions. Never really resolved but later during the run day the settings seem to produce stable discharges with delayed saawteeth (may be related to LHCD power level)

3. Timing scan of the high power phase:
- Starting at 0.3 s.: #020 to #025 (some difficulties with RF trips)
- Starting at 0.4 s.: #027
- Starting at 0.5 s.: #029 to #032
- Starting at 0.6 s.: #018, #019 (and #011, #014)
- Starting at 0.7 s.: #033
Heating later clearly gives higher stored energy. The LHCD preheat does change to initial rise of Wplasma and the way the discharge enters the H-mode. Optimum timing seems to be 0.5-0.6 s.

4. Effect of LHCD:
- With LHCD: Longest delay of the sawteeth is ~ 570ms (seee #033)
- No LHCD in current rise: Clear sawteeth at 250ms, different Wplasma evolution as documented for the 0,5s start time of the ICRH (compare #029, #31, #032)
- Use LHCD in the current rise, but turn off when ICRH comes on: Still a difference is observed, so not only LH power during H-mode phase: Compare #034 with #029 to #032.

5. Go to 800kA: #035
Keeping the LHCD timing and density during the current rise the same, the current rise was extended to reach 800kA at 400ms. LHCD still manages to delay the sawteeth untill 500ms. Performance of the plasma could not the verfied as ICRH trips in this last pulse.

In conclusion: Good run with lots of useful data. AND good basis for future experiments (physics stuidies an/or performance optimisation of the Hybrid).

Our first plasma attempt was shot 04 which fizzled (90 kA) from startup
shot 1080221010. A plasma was obtained on shot 05 after changing RCUR
from 0 to 1000, and tweaking down the gas. Several shots were then used
to condition the ICRF and LH and make a small adjustment in the plasma
shape.

There were no more fizzles until shot 22, after which we got into a
fizzle/plasma cycle. This problem seems to have been cured by a
shot-by-shot deduction in the fill pressure in 1 or 2 ms increments.
Some shots actually displayed no change or even an increase in fill
pressure at t=10 ms following a reduction in the prefill request. So the
fill was reduced shot-by-shot until clear reductions were seen.
Unfortunately that process gave us an extra four fizzles. RCUR was also
changed from 1000 to 1800 and then back to 1400 during this time to help
with bounces. The prefill may have just been a too high most of the day
and became critically so late in the day.

Amanda asked that the boronization be extended to the inner wall for the
first time this campaign, and it certainly seemed to be a very
successful application. Injections were generally much less of an
issue, and metallic impurity lines were reported to be at a very low
level.

Problems:

We had to reboot servers, which was followed by three test shots. We
started tests well before the run and only lost about 15 minutes of run
time.

Cooling was an issue later in the run. We had a very low level leak
most of the day that got worse as attempts were made to speed up the
cooling. The warmest TF vertical leg seemed to move around during the
day(C-Right, A-Left, others?).

Apr 14 2008 09:40:22:353AM1080414005Adrianus SipsGood first plasma shot,
Clean rise to 600kA, diverting just before 250ms.

First sawtooth at 170ms
Density under control (6e19)\)before ICRH,
Apr 14 2008 09:49:43:470AM1080414006Adrianus SipsBetter, moved plasma outwoard, diverted earlier (200ms)
Clean rise to 600kA

First sawtooth ? as ECE failed
Apr 14 2008 10:02:53:543AM1080414007Adrianus SipsGood repeat,
First sawtooth, at 170ms.
Apr 14 2008 10:18:16:507AM1080414008Adrianus SipsLower density request during rise phase, 4e19
First sawtooth at 300ms GOOD!

Keep this lower density, next shot + some changes to early plasma shape <200ms, in preparation for early LH
Apr 14 2008 10:29:10:563AM1080414009Adrianus SipsGood first shape evolution now 4e19
First sawtooth at 250ms, bit earlier compare to #008, despite being at a bit lower in density. Looks like we can not go ower in density.

LH would be good to go from 200ms onwards, BUT needs 1 more conditioning shot.
Apr 14 2008 10:38:07:740AM1080414010Adrianus SipsGood repeat of #009,
First sawtooth at ~250ms.

Good target to add LH from 200ms...starting with this next shot
Apr 14 2008 10:48:53:280AM1080414011Adrianus SipsGood LH from 200-500ms
First sawtooth at ~550ms NO sawteeth during LH phase at all!!

Extending LH pulse length next shot
Apr 14 2008 11:10:23:203AM1080414012Adrianus SipsLH from 200-500ms, did not extend despite request
First sawtooth at ~300ms NEED to find out why this is different compared to #011

Apr 14 2008 11:22:38:290AM1080414013Adrianus SipsLH from 200-500ms, did not extend despite request

First sawtooth at ~330ms, we matched the density and LHCD power of #011 (which had the sawteeth delayed until 550ms)

Apr 14 2008 11:47:47:607AM1080414014Adrianus SipsLH from 200-700ms

First sawtooth at ~610ms, so managed to extend the sawteeth when the density request is low (3.5e19).

Apr 14 2008 12:00:43:273PM1080414015Adrianus SipsLH from 150-650ms

Impurity influx just after LH turn 0n (~180ms), slightly lower temperature following the influx, hence first sawteeth at ~430ms.

Need to document that moving LH to 0.15s is benificial, so keep for next pulse.
Add 1MW ICRH from 0.2-0.6 as well for next pulse...we need to try to develop a robust sawteeth free rise and early flat top phase

Apr 14 2008 05:44:11:040PM1080414016Adrianus SipsLH from 150-650ms

With 1MW ICH, sawteeth much earlier (300ms)
ELM free H-mode just after 300ms, so making an H-mode is not the problem.

Apr 14 2008 12:29:30:110PM1080414017Adrianus SipsLH from 150-650ms

Last try with 1MW ICRH,
AGAIN sawteeth much earlier (300ms).......
This time NO ELM free H-mode at 300ms

NEXT repeat #014 with more LHCD 0.2-0.7
Apr 14 2008 12:50:41:157PM1080414018Adrianus SipsLH from 200-700ms, increase power from 650kW to 800kW
NO RF during current rise (Repeat #014 with more LHCD 0.2-0.7)

BUT sawteeth much earlier...(330ms)
Apr 14 2008 01:06:25:573PM1080414019Adrianus SipsLH from 200-700ms, increase power from 650kW to 800kW
NO RF during current rise (Repeat #014 with more LHCD 0.2-0.7)

BUT sawteeth remain..(320ms)

THIS target look good enough to do a timing scan
H98>1 during ICRH phase
Apr 14 2008 01:09:31:920PM1080414019Adrianus SipsLH from 200-700ms, increase power to 950kW
NO RF during current rise (Repeat #018 with more LHCD 0.2-0.7)

Sawteeth remain..(320ms)
THIS target look good enough to do a timing scan (see next pulse)
H98>1 during ICRH phase
Apr 14 2008 01:21:21:883PM1080414020Adrianus SipsLH from 200-700ms, 800kW (lile #018)

High power RF moved forward to 300ms (timing scan)
ICRH tripps in first 100ms, not a clean H-mode transition, W rises very slowly and is well below #019 levels.

Apr 14 2008 01:44:57:993PM1080414021Adrianus SipsLH from 200-700ms, 800kW (lile #018)

High power RF moved forward to 300ms (timing scan), still some trips.
Again W rises very slowly and is well below #019 levels.

Apr 14 2008 01:52:44:173PM1080414022Adrianus Sipsfizzle
Apr 14 2008 02:14:21:237PM1080414023Adrianus SipsRepeat #021 to get clean RF start at 0.3s.
Trips again
Need to get a clean RF start at 0.3s to be a meaningful comparison to #019 that started RF at 0.6s.
Apr 14 2008 02:53:06:547PM1080414025Adrianus SipsRepeat #021 to get clean RF start at 0.3s.
Good enough to observe that W rise is indeed significantly slower.

Next go to RF at 0.4s.
Apr 14 2008 05:05:18:553PM1080414027Adrianus SipsTiming scan with RF start at 0.4s.
Good, W higher compared to 0.3s time, bit lower compared to 0.6s start
No sawteeth until start of ICRH

Next go to RF at 0.5s.
Apr 14 2008 05:04:52:680PM1080414029Adrianus SipsTiming scan with RF start at 0.5s.
Good, W higher compared to 0.3s and 0.4s time, bit lower compared to 0.6s start
No sawteeth until start of ICRH, so very good shot.

However, impurrity injection after 0.6s, W had already flattened out....but would be nice to get a clean pulse.

Next comparison without LHCD
Apr 14 2008 05:05:03:990PM1080414031Adrianus SipsTiming scan with RF start at 0.5s, NO LHCD
Good, W significantly lower compared to 0.5s timing with LHCD.

Repeat #029, to get a clean comparison
Apr 14 2008 05:04:28:337PM1080414032Adrianus SipsTiming scan with RF start at 0.5s, with LHCD (repeat of #029)
Good, W significantly higher compared to 0.5s timing without LHCD.
NO sawteeth until 0.5 seconds

Also H-mode character is different (looks more ELM free like)

Next: Continue the timing scan to 0.7 seconds
Apr 14 2008 05:04:19:320PM1080414033Adrianus SipsTiming scan with RF start at 0.7s, with LHCD.
Good, W significantly lower compared to 0.5s or 0.6s timing (of course RF only at this time as LHCD turns off at 0.7s).
NO sawteeth until 0.575 seconds....so this looks similar to having no LHCD as shot 031

Next: Timing at 0.5 seconds, with LHCD preheat/CD BUT turn off LHCD during RF phase.
Apr 14 2008 05:04:08:897PM1080414034Adrianus SipsTiming scan with RF start at 0.5s, LHCD only until 0.5s
Good, W evolution different compared to no LHCD preheat, also H-mode transition is different. NICE shot.

Next 800kA attempt
Apr 14 2008 05:50:11:577PM1080414035Adrianus SipsGo to 800kA, RF time at 0.5s.
LH: 0.2-0.7 s.
800kA timed at 0.4 s.

GOOD: no sawteeth at all until RF turn on at 0.5s.
BUT ICRH trips and only coupled 2MW..

Clearly a good prospect for further Hybrid optimisation
