| MP 538 day two
Requires good boronization and good beam performance 6A+ and fast modulation (40ms high/20ms low) Use same boronization recipe as was used for 4/14 This run day will test the reproducibility of a few phenomena observed on Day 1 of MP 538 as well as completing the target discharges that were not obtained due to the loss of J, on 3/21/08. Goal: The purpose of this experiment is to study th radial and temporal behavior of the edge radial electric field before and during L-H transistions in order to characterize the role the field plays in the transition and the effect the structure of the field has on H-mode confinement. | This was a good run day in terms of machine, RF, and beam performance, and yet still didn't quite get all data we wanted! Total of 30 shots, 2 fizzles, no disruptions. Beam behaved itself well at ~6amps, 40ms/20ms modulation all day. The ICRF cleaned up to 2-3MW quickly, in the morning, but it took until the afternoon to get steady operation at higher powers.
There were 4 sections to this run. 1) High power EDA and changing stored energy in a given EDA 2) USN shots and slow transition dynamics 3) Triangularity scan 4) DIII-D matching discharges Section one was only partially completed, due to the inability to get steady 3.5+MW of ICRF in the morning, we moved on to get some of section 2, instead of dwelling on this too long. However, several beam pulses were obtained in steady ICRF portions between trips, and will hopfully give the desired comparison. Aditionally, more data at higher ICRF powers was collected in LSN EDA's at the end in a very similar shape. The USN section was acutally quite successful, although it took a while to obtain the desired data, and we only ran a single triangularity. The L-H transition in USN seemed to be VERY sensitive to density and v. small changes in density changed the threshold significantly, from unobtainable 4+MW to obtainable 2.75MW. This phenomena, although not what we wanted to see, was quite interesting, and unexplored. Some enhanced L-modes were obtained as well as both ELM-free and steady EDA H-modes in USN. Section 3, the triangularity scan was dropped, there was not enough time to comlete this section Section 4 was a plasma shape and parameter match to an Alcator discharge from 2000 that was used in pedestal comparision studies with DIII-D, the idea being to repeat this discharge as closely as possible, and compare the edge rotation velocities and and Er well structure between the two machines. The shape was easy to reproduce, only took 2 discharges, however we were unable to reproduce our own density and temperature profiles! perhaps due to the changes in divertor configuration between then and now? The pressure profiles between then and now matched very well, but typically the density from today was too high, and the temperature was too low. There were shots where either the density or temperature profiles were matched, but not both simultaneously. There were also significant differences in SOL electron density between the two sets of data. CXRS data was generally good today. Poloidal data, as usual, better than toroidal. Also, LSN data seemed in general to be better and produce less scatter in the results than USN data even for similar stored energies and pedetsal parameters /?? why? I don't know. |

| Apr 15 2008 09:12:15:710AM | 1080415001 | Rachael Mcdermott | Fizzle. CXRS cameras are fine, and Datx worked |
| Apr 15 2008 09:27:22:363AM | 1080415002 | Rachael Mcdermott | Plasma, no RF. density/pressure too high.
next to no CXRS signal, beam attenuation too high from edge pressure? |
| Apr 15 2008 09:41:28:577AM | 1080415003 | Rachael Mcdermott | Plasma.
Little bit of ICRF, no H-mode. Edge pressure very high. Still no CXRS signal, barely seeing the beam, edge pressure is still too high. next shot, same thing, try to outgas the walls. |
| Apr 15 2008 09:52:55:743AM | 1080415004 | Rachael Mcdermott | fizzle-ish
|
| Apr 15 2008 10:09:04:113AM | 1080415005 | Rachael Mcdermott | plasma. H-mode, but not steady.
CXRS signal is a little better, target density is right on before the H-mode. edge pressure still v. high once RF comes on. try again. |
| Apr 15 2008 10:24:38:800AM | 1080415006 | Rachael Mcdermott | plasma. Good steady H-mode
Got the CXRS profiles I need in the 2MW EDA need to condition the ICRF for higher powers. move the ICRF timing for the second tier up to 1s. enabling ninja again next shot turning down argon puff to 85ms |
| Apr 15 2008 10:41:52:890AM | 1080415007 | Rachael Mcdermott | plasma, H-mode, good cx data in first half, but can't pull anything out of the second half when the ICRF is tripping. repeat until for steadier high power RF
beam current dropping, moving beam timing to 60ms high, and 20ms low, edge pressure much better until the end of the shot |
| Apr 15 2008 10:57:18:667AM | 1080415008 | Rachael Mcdermott | plasma, H-mode, good cx data in first half, but can't pull anything out of the second half when the ICRF is tripping.
repeat, asking for only 3.5MW from ICRF instead of 4. |
| Apr 15 2008 11:17:38:197AM | 1080415009 | Rachael Mcdermott | mysterious loss of RF data?
still not steady RF. v. little CX past 1s |
| Apr 15 2008 11:49:03:990AM | 1080415010 | Rachael Mcdermott | Yay. two beam pulses in the solid portion of the 3.5+MW
repeat this shot, but flat pulse 3.5MW of ICRF. |
| Apr 15 2008 12:43:16:643PM | 1080415013 | Rachael Mcdermott | Still no H-mode, threshold power is higher than it was for the original shot last summer. Try going back to original triangularity ~0.63 and see if that affects H-mode threshold |
| Apr 15 2008 12:58:25:000PM | 1080415014 | Rachael Mcdermott | Still no H-mode.
lowering the density a bit, turning off ninja, and trying again! |
| Apr 15 2008 01:14:14:653PM | 1080415015 | Rachael Mcdermott | Got an H-mode. good, but odd. went in at 2.5MW, when it didn't go in before at 4MW and the densities were similar!
Repeat this shot, with ICRF=2.5MW flat |
| Apr 15 2008 02:24:53:880PM | 1080415016 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good shot, nice EDAish H-mode at the end. |
| Apr 15 2008 02:24:20:080PM | 1080415017 | Rachael Mcdermott | Dropped RF power just a little bit, trying to extend super L-mode phase. worked, and plasma returns to enahnced L-mode after the ELM-free H-mode. |
| Apr 15 2008 02:23:12:317PM | 1080415018 | Rachael Mcdermott | Increased RF 3-4MW during H-mode, did not see much of an effect |
| Apr 15 2008 02:22:07:237PM | 1080415019 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good shot, but trying to get a higher stored energy point for comparison to the 100kJ, and not getting it.
Next shot, increase the target density just al ittle bit, and RF=flat 4MW. |
| Apr 15 2008 03:17:16:623PM | 1080415022 | Rachael Mcdermott | Starting trying to match te DIII-D discharge
Ip needs to increase to 1.1 next shot. Density pedestal is very close, temperature pedestal needs to be increased a bit. The shape is close, elongation needs to be reduced a little bit more. Next shot increase RF to 3.5MW |
| Apr 15 2008 03:51:15:650PM | 1080415024 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good match on the shape, the density pedestal is still a little high and the tmperature pedestal a little low. Dropping the target density from 0.95 to 0.8x10^20 and keeping the RF the same. |
| Apr 15 2008 07:43:34:763PM | 1080415026 | Rachael Mcdermott | dropping the density didn't help, pedestal just as high. dropping RF power next shot, to better match original shot |
| Apr 15 2008 07:42:21:357PM | 1080415027 | Rachael Mcdermott | target density 1e20 from 03.9e20. good shot, still not quite what we want, but beautiful EDA especially for the end of the day. great beam performance
dropped RF to 2.7MW actually improved confinement. |
| Apr 15 2008 07:39:12:810PM | 1080415028 | Rachael Mcdermott | Increase the target density to try and match 1000616004, see if this adjusts the density pedestal height.
funny droop in the density, stored energy, etc... what's causing that? |
| Apr 15 2008 07:37:55:993PM | 1080415029 | Rachael Mcdermott | Try this time increasing the RF power mid EDA to try and increase the temperature pedestal, but keeping the starting EDA conditions the same.
|
| Apr 15 2008 07:36:44:650PM | 1080415030 | Rachael Mcdermott | Good last shot Temperature profiles finally coming up, to match 1000616004, but density is high, still should be in the range of matchability with the DIII-D data set.
