| SL plan: MP 549: MCCD effect on sawtooth period with energetic particles
Boronization (on Monday 1080421): recipe same as the one on 1080415. Post boronization ECDC: Helium for 1 hour, and D2 for 1 hour. Special gas: He3 15 PSI, B-side Upper cryopump: needed later in the run. ICRF: J run on 7:30, D and E 8:30 am. Plasma setup: start with 1080415011, may vary current/density/field later. Run plan: Step 0): we will need several shots to check out the 50 MHz operation, and also condition up D and E antenna. Need to check out the capability of antenna phase control. Step 1): (10 shots) Evaluate MCCD on L-mode without energetic particles. Ramp B field from 5.4 to 4.8 T to establish the 3He puff duration for efficient mode conversion. If sawtooth modification is observed, run a constant B field. Run shots at different power levels. Step 2): (6 shots) Evaluate MCCD on L-mode with central minority heating. Run MCCD with 80 MHz power from D + E (0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 MW), check whether there is a power threshold that the MCCD is no longer effective in sawtooth modification. Step 3): (6 shots) Evaluate MCCD on normal LSN H-mode with central minority heating. Scan D and E power to max available, and check whether MCCD is effective. Step 4: (4 shots) Evaluate MCCD on USN L-mode with minority heating. Scan D+E power (1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 MW) and check out the MCCD effect. Step 5: (6 shots) Evaluate MCCD on USN H-mode, with and without cryopump. If the D and E power along is not enough to achieve H-mode, we will use near-DN plasma, or enter H-mode in LSN the move to USN in H-mode. If all goes well, we will try to create monster sawtooth. |

| This was the first 50 MHz run in this campaign. First 11 shots were used for the ICRF system check-out.
We did B field ramp to identify the MC layer location and the effect of MCCD on the sawtooth period (shot 12 and 13), then ran plasmas at fixed B field and compare the effect from different antenna phasing. Phase contrast imaging (PCI) measurement showed that in conditions like shot 25 (with 150 ms He3 puff from 0.2 sec, and Bt = 5.1 T), the MC waves were peaked at R ~ 65 cm, very close to the q=1 surface for these plasmas. More detailed analysis will determine whether the current driven was outside or inside this particular surface. The observations in L-mode, J-antenna-only shots 14, 15, and 16 were consistent, i.e., the sawtooth periods were the longest in co-CD antenna phase, and shortest in counter-CD antenna phase. This indicated that local MCCD can affect the sawtooth period (same as the conclusion from Alex Parisot's earlier work). The result with combined J and D/E antennas was more difficult to interpret. Comparing the beginning of rf pulse in shot 25 and 26, we might conclude that Ctr-CD shortened the sawtooth in the beginning of the RF pulse, while Co-CD lengthened the sawtooth period. And when the fast particle population was established later in the pulse, MCCD might not have significant effect. The longest sawtooth was obtained at cryopump controlled H-mode in shot 29 with Co-CD antena phasing (not sure whether MCCD contributed to the period). On shot 25, 26, 29 and 30, significant Co-current toroidal rotation (at some period more than 100 km/sec) was observed. This velocity was more than a factor of 2 larger than the usual delta_W/Ip. This rotation appeared to be independent of the J antenna phasing, but possibly related to the mode conversion waves (mode conversion flow drive?). Previously similar plasmas with minority-heating-only followed the rotation scaling. More plasmas are required to check this out. Shots to be further analyzed (total 15): 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, and 30 |

D +E at 2 MW from 1.4 to 1.5 sec for post-boronization recovery. J 1 MW total from 0.5 to 1.4 sec. Programed heating, CD and Ctr-CD phases, 300 ms for each phase. (Need to adjust phase control parameters based on result). He3 puff 100 ms from 0.2 sec for mode conversion. Result: computer problem (after the upgrade last week), no power shot. |
| Apr 22 2008 09:48:45:397AM | 1080422002 | Yijun Lin | no power shot. computer problems. |
| Apr 22 2008 10:24:44:877AM | 1080422003 | Yijun Lin | Another no power shot.
Next: program 5.2 T instead of 5.4 T. This will give me better chance to have MCCD near the q=1 surface. |
| Apr 22 2008 10:42:33:157AM | 1080422004 | Yijun Lin | Run 5.2 Testla, and different phases. This is better chance to get
sawtooth modification. Result: not much rf power. Next: repeat until getting rf power. |
| Apr 22 2008 10:54:53:383AM | 1080422005 | Yijun Lin | Trying to get power from J.
no improvement yet. Next shot: repeat. |
| Apr 22 2008 11:07:13:067AM | 1080422006 | Yijun Lin | Trying to get power from J.
A little improvement. at least one blip to 0.5 MW. Next shot: repeat. |
| Apr 22 2008 11:20:30:687AM | 1080422007 | Yijun Lin | trying to get J power at 50 MHz (first run this campaign), and post-boronization.

next: repeat. (Kmarr and Rice are going to do some puffing NINJA/Ar.) |
| Apr 22 2008 12:18:36:027PM | 1080422010 | Yijun Lin | Plasma.
Heat and CD phases. Sawtooth longer at heating phase. shorter at CD phase. |
| Apr 22 2008 12:20:38:780PM | 1080422010 | Yijun Lin | Plasma.
Heat and CD phases. Sawtooth longer at heating phase. shorter at CD phase. Need at least one more plasma to condition up J antenna. |
| Apr 22 2008 12:47:33:690PM | 1080422011 | Yijun Lin | Got H-mode at ctr-CD phase (don't know why).
Difficult to judge the sawtooth period. next: Ramp B field from 5.4 to 4.8 T, and only run CD phase. (lower J power to 1.6 MW to avoid H-mode for now). |
| Apr 22 2008 01:04:47:970PM | 1080422012 | Yijun Lin | ramp B field 5.4 to 4.8 T, and run CD phase only.
When B is less than 5.3 T, the sawtooth is longer. (does it mean current is driven outside of HFS q=1 at B< 5.3 T?) Next: repeat. run CTR-CD. |
| Apr 22 2008 01:39:18:353PM | 1080422013 | Yijun Lin | CTR-CD phase. B ramp.
Looks very similar to shot 12. (don't understand). Maybe B ramp is not a good idea. next: 5.1 T. heating, CD and CTR-CD in one shot. |
| Apr 22 2008 01:41:51:560PM | 1080422014 | Yijun Lin | shot 14: run heating, CD, and CTR-CD in one shot. 5.1 T
Got H-mode at CD phase. Don't see very significant difference sawtooth period at different phases. (approximate sawtooth periods heating: 8 ms, CD: 10 ms, ctr-CD: 6 ms) (maybe helium-3 not enough for a lot of MC) next: puff He3 for 150 ms start at 0.2 sec |
| Apr 22 2008 01:51:47:677PM | 1080422015 | Yijun Lin | shot 15: run CD, heating, and CTR-CD in one shot. 5.1 T, he3 150 ms at 0.2 sec.
Again, H-mode in CD phase. Sawtooth was biggest in the beginning with CD phase. next: lower power to avoid H-mode. |
| Apr 22 2008 02:00:02:700PM | 1080422016 | Yijun Lin | shot 16: still got H-modes.
Similar behavior. CD: 9 ms, heating: 8 ms, ctr-cd: 6 ms. Next: USN, and higher J power. |
| Apr 22 2008 04:28:10:750PM | 1080422017 | Yijun Lin | shot 17: USN, 5.1 T, he3 150 ms at 0.2 sec, CD, heating, ctr-CD.
similar sawtooth behavior. Longest at CD phase. (marfe developed late at the shot. anything after 1.0 sec is dubious. Next: change order of the phases. ctr-CD, heating, then CD (PCI saw MC wave at ch 25, R~ 0.65 cm). |
| Apr 22 2008 02:25:31:030PM | 1080422018 | Yijun Lin | early disruption.
Next shot: run J port only from 0.6 to 1.2 sec. ctr-CD, heating, and CD phase, 200 ms each. |
| Apr 22 2008 02:40:33:510PM | 1080422019 | Yijun Lin | early disruption |
| Apr 22 2008 02:50:06:283PM | 1080422020 | Yijun Lin | another early disruption.
OK. Go back to LSN, and I'd like to run D+E to get H-mode. |
| Apr 22 2008 03:10:24:627PM | 1080422021 | Yijun Lin | shot 21:
Got plasma. but J port faulted early. Next: lower J power, and also D+E power. |
| Apr 22 2008 03:34:54:897PM | 1080422022 | Yijun Lin | shot 22: LSN, 5.2 T, he3 150 ms at 0.2 sec, ctr-CD, heating,then CD.
plasma. 8 ms sawtooth in the first H-mode at ctr-CD phase. Next: same plasma. different phasing. |
| Apr 22 2008 03:34:30:350PM | 1080422023 | Yijun Lin | shot 23: repeat. CD, heating,then ctr-CD.
LSN, 5.2 T, he3 150 ms at 0.2 sec, CD, heating, then ctr-CD. (got 12 ms sawtooth in the first H-mode at CD phase. next: USN. same power, same phasing |
| Apr 23 2008 09:45:06:313AM | 1080422025 | Yijun Lin | shot 25: ctr-CD, heating,then CD.
No H-mode. good clean shot. (the sawtooth periods were different at different phasing). (longer at CD phase) (the sawtooth was shorter at teh beginning. Does it mean the ctr-CD was effective when the tail is not yet fully formed?) Found strong toroidal rotation near the center, up to 100 km/sec. Next: CD, heating, then ctr-CD. |
| Apr 23 2008 09:45:25:360AM | 1080422026 | Yijun Lin | shot 26: CD, heating,ctr-CD.
The sawteeth are getting longer in time. The first severl periods are longer than those in shot 25 (until an injection at 0.68 sec) (does this mean anything? not sure yet). Strong rotation to 100 km/sec. peaked. Next: run CD only. Higher power on all. To get Cryopumped H-mode. |
| Apr 22 2008 04:22:48:027PM | 1080422027 | Yijun Lin | early disruption. |
| Apr 22 2008 04:36:36:570PM | 1080422028 | Yijun Lin | fizzle |
| Apr 22 2008 04:59:58:570PM | 1080422029 | Yijun Lin | H-mode USN. Got 17 ms sawtooth. J 2 MW in CD phase
Next: run 3 different phases. |
| Apr 23 2008 09:46:46:593AM | 1080422030 | Yijun Lin | H-modes in CD phase and heating phase. L-mode in Ctr-CD phase.
More anlaysis is required. strong rotation to 100 km/sec. End of run. |
