Run Plan: MP536 Evaluation of FWEH, FWCD and MCCD

1. Establish discharge using 1080125026 as a basis with 2.5 MW from D+E
antennas and 2-3 MW from J in heating phase after the H-mode has
formed. (3-4 shots)

Scan plasma density, BT, and plasma current to maximize FWEH by
maximizing electron beta. (Lower BT to 5 T; scan Ip; scan density) 10
shots

If necessary, investigate discharges like 1080409030 (USN, Ip~1.3 MA)
to maximize plasma beta and FW absorption.

2. If significant electron absorption is observed then: Scan the J
antenna phase in discharges with 2.5 MW from D+E, 2.5 MW from J
antenna. Phases to be used are [0,pi,pi,0] (heating phase),
[0,pi/2,pi,3/2pi], and [0,pi/2,pi,-3/2pi]. (6 shots)

3. If successful at highest power level, utilized 1.5 MW from J antenna
into same target plasma. (3 shots).

If direct electron absorption is a bust, then evaluate central MCCD
both in the current flat top and ramp-up.

4. Establish discharge using best discharge from step 1 as a basis
with 2.5 MW from D+E antennas and 2.5 MW from J in heating phase
with the modulated power to determine location of the deposition
profile. (3 shots)

5. Scan the J antenna phase in discharges with 2.5 MW from D+E, 2.5-3 MW
from J antenna, and BT~5.5. Phases to be used are [0,pi,pi,0] (heating
phase), [0,pi/2,pi,3/2 ], and [0,pi/2,pi,-3/2pi]. (6 shots)

Despite some PLC trouble, we were able to find evidence of fast wave
electron heating, 1080423018 is the trophy discharge. The discharge
required was an USN discharge at 5.2 T and plasma current 1 MA. The
target temperature was ~4.5 keV at the top of the sawteeth; otherwise
the heating was very weak. In current drive phase, the plasma
temperature decreased with FW power applied suggesting poor wave
damping. Impurity production with the RF was quite more substantial
than the H minority heating from D+E antennas.

Today's run showed that there is an incipient vertical stability problem with
double/upper null shots (up to 15). Although n/n_c is quite moderate, there
is a ~60Hz oscillation that appears to be strongly affected by small changes
in the fast P gain. The oscillation only became a problem for the highest
current where it tends to rail the chopper and led to several VDEs.

The upper null plasma from shot 17 on did not have that problem.

An hour was lost to a fault in the torvac PLC.

Physics Operator Comments
Apr 23 2008 09:00:21:997AMIan HutchinsonLoad from 1080125025.

This shot has 39ms fill puff. Consistent with cryopump on.

50 ms Argon puff on this shot. Turned off. PG1.
Gas is currently only Btop PG4 and Bmain PG3(6 and 42 psi)
PG2 is He3 but disabled.

This shot has rather less of a zcur swing than some other shots that day.
My understanding is that we want to go close to double null. Therefore:

Increase the zcur upward swing to make it go to 0 at 1.1s.
Sweep starts at -.014 at .75s.
Apr 23 2008 09:11:59:693AMIan HutchinsonCryopump will not be ready for first shot, so lower fill puff to 16ms.
Apr 23 2008 09:24:48:580AM1080423001Ian HutchinsonPlasma to rampdown. No RF. Plasma went marginally upper null.

Lower nl04 demand to 6 from 7e19
Cryopump now nearly cold. Increase fill puff to 40ms.
Apr 23 2008 09:46:23:703AM1080423002Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Disrupts at 1.27s. Many injections from the RF. Eventually kill it.

Put fill puff to .2s and reduce it to 30ms. This is to try to make the fill
level less sensitive to the presence or absence of cryopumping.

Apr 23 2008 10:03:10:013AM1080423003Ian HutchinsonPlasma to 1.29s. Disrupted by big injection. RF improving condition.
H-mode achieved and sustained into the upper-null phase. RF heating not great.
Fill puff worked fine.
Apr 23 2008 10:24:50:450AM1080423004Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts early. Caused by hollow Te profile and early Mo radiation
from an apparent injection at 108ms.

Increase PG3 V during the 30-90ms period. Attempt to prevent early radiation
problem.
Apr 23 2008 10:59:03:010AM1080423005Ian HutchinsonPlasma. Disrupts as the result of a VDE starting at 0.5s.
Actually I made the gas puff changes in the wrong segment. So it did nothing.

Program EF4 to +1000A at .5s. For some reason it was zero.
Really increase the gas puff in segment 1 around .07s.
Apr 23 2008 11:09:14:767AM1080423006Ian HutchinsonVery similar VDE to shot 5. We can't see why this should be happening.

Reload shot 3. [No changes]
Apr 23 2008 11:21:34:777AM1080423007Ian HutchinsonPlasma to ramp-down. OH2-L appears different. We suspect that it was misbehaving
for the previous two shots in a subtle way that we don't understand.
In the prior two shots the OH2 appears to follow demand but the demand is
exactly zero but with some perturbations. On this shot it looks sensible
again. In other words, M-Out appears to be incorrect in a subtle way.

Enhance gas puff in segment one.

In the prior two shots the OH2 appears to follow demand but the demand is
exactly zero but with some perturbations. On this shot it looks sensible
again. In other words, M-Out appears to be incorrect in a subtle way.

Enhance gas puff in segment one.

Apr 23 2008 02:04:03:477PM1080423014Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts at 1.21s

There is an oscillation that for high currents overpushes the chopper.
It has been there for the whole day, but only now it gets us.
Raise the fast zcur P from 4 to 5 to try to suppress that oscillation.
Raise TF to 143kA.
Apr 23 2008 02:11:29:700PM1080423015Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts at 1s. Vertical oscillation is changed in frequency.
Seems to indicate that the problem is arising in the whole control loop
not just as power supply noise.

Load segment 3 from 1080422030.
Set to 1 MA. Set TF to 143kA.
