SL_Plan for 1080425
MP497: MCEH/MCCD and LHCD
SL: Y. Lin
PO: J. Irby

ICRF: transmitters 3 and 4 run on by 8:30. Transmitters 1 and 2 stand-by.

LH: 500 kW required. 90 degree and 60 degree phases.

Special gas: Helium-3, B-upper, 15 PSI

Starting shot: 1080422014 (or choose a shot from 1080424), Ip = 800 kA. nl04 = 0.5e20. Raise Bt to 6.0 T (the MP called for 6.9 T, but concerns over the TF ruled it out). He3 puff starts at 0.2 sec, and last for 150 ms.

Plan:

Step 1 (3 shots): check out the mode conversion scenario. Run J antenna 2 MW, 0.7 to 1.2 sec. Co-CD, heat, and CTR-CD phases in the same shot. Try out different He3 puff durations (150ms, 100 ms, and 200 ms)

Step 2 (1 shot): LH base-line shot. LH 500 kW, 90 degree phase. 0.7 to 1.2 sec.

Step 3 (3 shots): ICRF first, LH second. LH 500 kW, 90 degree, 0.9 to 1.4 sec. J antenna 2 MW, 0.7 to 1.0 sec. Scan J antenna phases.

Step 4 (3 shots): LH first, ICRF second. LH 500 kW, 90 degree, 0.7 to 1.0 sec. J antenna 2 MW, 0.9 to 1.4 sec. Scan J antenna phases.

Step 5 (3 shots): choose a shot that shows some sign of synergy, ramp B field from 6.2 to 5.6 T from 0.7 to 1.4 sec. a shot with LH + ICRF, a shot with LH-only, and a shot with ICRF-only.

Depending on the result, I may need to run more shots at different LH and/or ICRF power levels.

If time allows configure LH to 60 degree phase, then repeat step 2, 3, and 4.

If time allows, retract the LH launcher, and run 3-4 plasmas for 1080422 (MP549):

1. Reload shot 1080422026 (5.1 T, USN). 150 ms Helium puff. D and E 0.6 to 1.5 sec, and J from 0.8 to 1.5 sec.

2. Run 5.4 T, same helium, Same ICRF power.

3. Run 5.1 Tesla, helium 50 ms puff. Same ICRF power.

ECDC Parameters (if requested)
------------------------------
gas and pressure: D2 at 2e-4 Torr
sweep: 70/71/103 cm
scan: 20/120 s

The primary mission is to get the machine running properly again. We will not allow argon, dnb, ninja, cryopump, etc until we have reliable plasmas.

We will start with a large outer gap and move out shot-to-shot in a similar manner to Steve's attemps yesterday. We will try to get ICRF going from the 1st shot at low power though it will probably have trouble with the large gaps.

Session Leader Summaries

SL summary:

Because of the problem in-vessel (see PO summary), I started the run with plan B, i.e. following run 1080422 and to check out the RF caused rotation. On shot 1080422015, 26, 29, 30, significant rotation was observed when the RF was applied (see SL summary on 1080422). It was unclear whether this was due to mode conversion heating/CD from J antenna.

In this run, we ran the same plasma while varying B field, helium-3 puff duration, and different RF waveforms.

Summary

1). The rotation can speed up by more than 34 km/sec with 3 MW from J port-only in counter-CD phase (shot 17), with only 10 kJ change in stored energy. (50 km/sec change with 14 kJ change in shot 25 in H-mode).

2). Strongest with counter-CD phasing (shot 2, 3, 4, 5)

3). Central heating from D/E-only did not create strong rotation (following the usual delta_W/Ip scaling) (shot 17, 16)

4). 150 ms Helium puff (about 15% he3 for mode conversion) is best (shot 9, 10, 12, 13, 17, 23). At 200 ms helium puff, the rotation is reduced to the normal scaling (shot 23).

5). not significantly different at 5.1 T (slightly off-axis, shot 4) and 5.3 T (nearly on-axis, shot 9), except delta_W is higher at 5.3 T. No effect when the MC layer is moved far off-axis (B = 4.8 T, shot 24). In shot 25 and 26 with B ramp-down, the response vs. B was broad (difficult to interpret since the velocity lagged for 100 ms). The largest velocity change was obtained in shot 25, at 5.17 Tesla, DV = 51 km/sec, DW = 10 kJ, J 2 MW, ctr-CD phase, and also in H-mode.

6) the rotation profile seems to be flat. Not significantly different than the normal rotation. No significant poloidal rotation either.

I did not run the SL_plan laid out for MP 497 because of the difficulty in creating small outer gap plasms in order for the LH to couple. All the successful shots today had outer gap more than 2.5 cm.

Physics Operator Summaries
Entered: Apr 26 2008 10:50:15:600PM
Author: Jim Irby
Though we still have an object, probably near a-hor, protruding into
the plasma, we were able to produce full-length plasmas today and
generate some very good physics results. It was necessary to operate
with outer gaps in the 2.5 cm range to keep the radiation down and
avoid disruptions. We operated most of the day with an inner wall
limited plasma and a large outer gap. However, on shot 20 we switched
to a SNL discharge, and over three shots, adjusted RCUR to produce a
2.1 to 2.3 cm gap that was relatively flat throughout the discharge.
This configuration also worked well with low levels of radiation
mostly coming from moly.

RF powers up to 5 MW were coupled to the plasma today. When the outer
gap was too small disruptions were clearly correlated with steps to
high power.

Problems
--------

shot 01 --- oh2_u did not commutate

shot 06 --- PLC status report error --- no power shot

shot 18 --- extreme physop error: seg 2 loaded into seg 1? 01:20 hours lost

shot 24 --- lost nl_04 feedback, plasma arm position control lost

Session Leader Comments
Apr 25 2008 09:11:50:580AM1080425001Yijun LinBecause of the difficulties getting good plasmas yesterday, I plan to run several shots like those on 1050422 first (5.1 T), with ICRF mode conversion only. This will be easier than 6 T plasmas. (LH launcher is all the way back before we can get reliable plasma).

Plasma parameter: use shot 1080424027,with inner wall limited and large outer gap. Helium-3 puff from 0.2 sec for 150 ms. J 1.6 MW from 0.8 to 1.5 sec. D+E 1.6 MW from 0.6 to 1.5 sec.

Result: fizzle.
Next: repeat.

Apr 25 2008 09:44:09:817AM1080425002Yijun LinPlasma, disrupted. J antenna heating phase. 5,1 T, 150 ms He3 puff.
No hirex-sr data. Maybe useful data on sawtooth.
Next: J Co-CD phase.

Apr 25 2008 10:03:08:123AM1080425003Yijun Linshot 3:
Plasma. J antenna CO-CD phase. 5,1 T, 150 ms He3 puff.
Core rotation velocity changed from -17 km/sec to +10 km/sec when J is on.
(This change is more than DWplasma/Ip scaling)

Next shot: J ctr-CD phase
Apr 25 2008 10:17:22:120AM1080425004Yijun Linshot 4:
Plasma. J antenna Ctr-CD phase. 5.1 T, 150 ms He3 puff.
Good. Core rotation velocity changed from -19 km/sec to +14 km/sec when J is on
Also Mo temperature jumped with J.
Sawtooth definitely shorter than shot 3.

Next: J heating phase. Same power level. Add Ar for rotation measurement.

Apr 25 2008 10:32:16:303AM1080425005Yijun Linshot 5: J heating phase. 5.1 T, 150 ms He3 puff.
PO programed Argon, but no argon puffed.
Good. Core rotation velocity changed from -13 km/sec to +12 km/sec when J is on.Sawtooth periods are somewhat in-between 3 and 4.
next: run J earlier than D and E.
Apr 25 2008 10:45:40:360AM1080425006Yijun Linno power shot.

Apr 25 2008 11:29:41:020AM1080425007Yijun Linshot 7: Run J earlier than D+E. 5.1 T, 150 ms He3 puff. With Argon.
J heating phase.
Plasma. Ramp-down.
Core rotation velocity changed from -12 km/sec to +20 km/sec when D+E is on.
(stored energy changed by 20 kJ)

Compared to shot 1080422025, 026, we found Ctr-CD J antenna drives the most rotation.

Next: 5.3 T. Run J, then D.

Apr 25 2008 11:18:26:790AM1080425008Yijun Linearly disruption.
Apr 25 2008 11:51:16:253AM1080425009Yijun Linshot 9: 5.3 Tesla. 150 ms Helium-3, J ctr-CD phase. (to compare with shot 4)
Plasma.
Velocity from -19 to 13 km/sec. Barely Wmhd change. Similar to shot 4.
(so the effect is there with on-axis MC also).

next: 50 ms Helium. Minority heating case, and check if this is really MC effect.
Apr 25 2008 12:04:45:450PM1080425010Yijun Linshot 10: 5.3 Tesla. 50 ms Helium-3, J ctr-CD phase. (to compare with shot 9)
Velocity changed 34 km/sec with no stored energy change.
So, this may not be related to MC at all.

Next: run J at heating phase.
Apr 25 2008 12:17:19:227PM1080425011Yijun Linshot 11: 5.3 Tesla. 50 ms Helium-3, J heating phase (cf. shot 10)
Velocity changed 34 km/sec. Delta W 10 kJ.
(So part of the change is related to delta W).

next: step up J power, 1, 2, and 3 MW. Ctr-CD phase.
Apr 25 2008 12:33:34:020PM1080425012Yijun Linshot 12: 5.3 Tesla. 50 ms Helium-3, J ctr-CD phase, Step J power (1, 2, 3 MW). (cf. shot 10)

The velocity change seems only at the first step (1 MW). very little change at higher power. (Is the velocity saturated?)

Next: 150 ms Helium and check out whether it is better.

Apr 25 2008 12:43:40:747PM1080425013Yijun Linshot 13: 5.3 Tesla. 150 ms Helium-3, J ctr-CD phase, Step J power (1, 2, 3 MW).
Velocity changed 37 km/sec. Delta W 6 kJ.
(this is better than shot 12. MC seems to drive more rotation than
presumably minority heating).

Next: J heating phase.
Apr 25 2008 12:50:27:080PM1080425014Yijun Linearly disruption.

Next: stack up D and E, compared with stack-up J.
Apr 25 2008 01:05:18:217PM1080425015Yijun Linshot 15: 5.3 Tesla. 150 ms Helium-3.
D/E 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps
J 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps, ctr-CD phase.
result: disrupted at .77 sec. too early.

next: repeat.
Apr 25 2008 01:19:14:743PM1080425016Yijun Linshot 16: 5.3 Tesla. 150 ms Helium-3.
D/E 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps
J 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps, ctr-CD phase.

result: disrupted at .77 sec. too early. (Maybe it cannot take too much power from D+E).
next: Run J earlier than D+E.

Apr 25 2008 01:54:31:940PM1080425017Yijun Linshot 17: 5.3 Tesla. 150 ms Helium-3.
J 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps, ctr-CD phase.
D/E 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps
AND YES, the rotation rose significantly when J was on. (32 km/sec. 10 kJ deltaW)
The rotation did not change much when D/E was on (20 km/sec, 20 kJ delta W)
(the rotation profile is rather flat)

Next: ohmic shot. Jim is changing plasma shape and see what kind of plasma we can still run with the problem inside the vessel.

Apr 25 2008 02:54:58:240PM1080425018Yijun Lintry ohmic plasma.
no plasma.
DPCS problem.

Cell entry to move LH launcher in and expect to run the first part of the MP later today.
Apr 25 2008 03:25:29:917PM1080425019Yijun LinDPCS test. no plasma.
Apr 25 2008 03:48:30:123PM1080425020Yijun Linohmic shot. disrupted.
(No TS data. VNC terminal for laser control vanished. i don't have the password to start it).
Apr 25 2008 04:11:29:530PM1080425022Yijun Linshot 22: 150 ms He3. 5.3 T.
J 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps, ctr-CD phase.
Got TS data back (Well, I figured out the password).
Disrupted at 0.7 sec.

next: 200 ms Helium
Apr 25 2008 04:28:17:590PM1080425023Yijun Linshot 23: 200 ms He3. 5.3 T.
J 1.8 to 2.8 MW, steps, ctr-CD phase.
a tiny H-mode. Tripped FMIT #3.
Velocicy changed 15 km/sec. delta W = 10 kJ. Much smaller than shot 17.
(Too much Helium?)

Next: 150 ms He3, 4.8 T. ctr-cd phase (MC layer is at 62 cm. Far off-axis)

Apr 25 2008 05:06:41:560PM1080425025Yijun LinShot 25: 150 ms He3, J port flat 2 MW from .6 to 1.5 sec. ramp B field from 5.4 to 4.8 T, from .7 to 1.3 sec. (LSN plasma)
Got several H-modes.
The rotation still exceeds the scaling by a lot (especially when B~ 5.2 T)

Next: reload shot 17, inner wall limited, to avoid H-mode. Same B ramp as shot 25.

Apr 25 2008 05:24:21:650PM1080425026Yijun LinShot 26: 150 ms He3, J port flat 2 MW from .6 to 1.5 sec. Ctr-CD phase. ramp B field from 5.4 to 4.8 T, from .7 to 1.3 sec. (inner wall limited plasma)
Plasma.
The response is rather broad to B field. The velocity seemed to peak between 5.2 and 4.9 Tesla, and lower on both sides of B field.

End of run.
