This run will be in support of MP551, "Penetration of Accessible LH Waves." We
will be investigating the drop-off of HXR emission as the line integrated
density rises above ~6e19. This will be a repeat of 1080424 without the
disruptions.

LH Setup: Launcher 1.0mm behind limiter, 75 and 105 degree approximate phasing,
current drive direction, 600kW net power, LH on from 0.7-1.2s.

Starting Shot: 1080408020


Shot Plan:

1. Bring up LH power to 600kW at 75 degree phasing with nl_04 steady at 4e19, 5.4T,
800kA. (2 shots)
2. Scan density from 3e19 (or as low as possible without locked modes) to 6e19
nl_04 between 0.7 and 1.2 seconds at 5.4 T, 800kA, 75 degrees. Cryopump and/or
inner wall puffing may be required for density control. Repeat at 105 degrees.

3. Scan density from 5e19 to 1e20 nl_04 between 0.7 and 1.2 seconds at 5.4 T,
800kA, 75 degrees. Cryopump and/or inner wall puffing may be required for
density control. Repeat at 105 degrees. (2 shots)
4. Repeat 2 and 3 at 6.2T, 800kA. (4 shots)

At this point we will switch to MP541. Steps 5-8 may be attemped later in the
day or on another day as time permits.

5. Repeat 2 and 3 at 5.4T, 800kA, 900kW. (4 shots)
6. Repeat 2 and 3 at 5.4T, 1.1MA. (4 shots)
7. Repeat 2 and 3 at 5.4T, 500kA. (4 shots)
8. Repeat 2 and 3 at 5.0T, 800kA. (4 shots)

MP551: Penetration of Accessible LH Waves, Shots 1-18
The tokamak started up nicely and ran clean discharges all morning after
removing the ASP from it's position inside the plasma. Good density scans were
obtained at 75 and 90 degree phasing with toriodal fields of 5.4 and 6.0T. Due
to time constraints, only the low-end density scans (nl_04=3.3-6e19,
nebar=5.5-10e19) were obtained on this day, and no current scan was performed.
The cyropump ran well on this day, however we were unable to start the density
scans quite as low as we had hoped for (nl_04=3e19) due to the amount of
recycling from the walls and also the now familiar low density MHD activity.

At first glance, the HXR emission as a function of density looks remarkably like
a straight line with a negative slope (i.e. HXR_countrate = -A*nebar + B), although
closer inspection shows that there is a knee in the curve in each shot around
nebar=6.5e19. This is where the slope was observed to change from something
proportional to 1/n to a steeper slope in previous experiments. As hoped, a
scan from high to low density resulted in data which overlaid almost exactly on
a scan from low to high density. A power scan with shots at 500kW and 800kW
resulted in data consistent with the other scans at 700kW. Unfortunately the
change to higher field did not increase the HXR count rate for any density at
either phasing. Data from the day show remarkably little variation across
different values of launched n|| and toroidal field when normalized to the
square root of net LH power.

MP541: LH wave damping with plasma temperature, shots 19-29
An ICRF power scan from 1MW to 4MW (counter-current MCCD) was conducted at 75
and 90 degree LH phasing. Te0 of up to 5keV with the LH on was obtained on shot
22. Some difficulty was encountered in obtaining shots in which both the ICRF
and the LHCD systems stayed on at the same time, although most shots had at
least 100ms of overlap between the two, which gives enough to to determine the
profile of HXR emission. Preliminary analysis indicates a wider HXR emission
profile at the higher temperatures.

The machine ran very well today despite a slow start due to a faulty UPS for the power room. There were two test shots at the beginning of the run for the data system and for EF4 to test changes in dpcs. Then, there were 27 plasmas in a row with no fizzles and no duds. Even though the cryopump seemed to fail to pump at the beginning of at least two shots and the neutral pressure exceeded 0.09 mTorr, the plasmas still went fine. There was one disruption in the flattop and one early in the rampdown and one at the end of the current rise with up to 4 MW of ICRF and up to 0.8 MW of LHCD. All of the other plasmas ramped all the way down. Very interesting results were obtained from the first half of the run where the density dependence of the LHCD efficiency was mapped out. The last part of the run was not as good in that the combined LHCD+ICRF often led to trips of one or both systems. Still for the times when both systems were running, there is good data across a range of phasing and heating power. Overall, there were 29 shots, 27 plasmas, 0 fizzles, 0 duds, and 2 test shots.
