Engineering setup for Wednesday 14 May 2008

MP501 Fluctuations during ITB

Session leaders: C. Fiore/L. Lin
Physics operator: R. Granetz

Overnight boronization with standard parameters, followed by the standard
ECDC in helium and then deuterium.

Run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00.

Power systems as on 1040309023 (Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.9-1 MA, nl04=0.9-1e20 m-2
(Yes, that's correct, the setup shot is from more than 4 years ago.)

A-coil configuration: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot; Enabled (standard
configuration)

Gas Setup:
   fill B-Top            with  6 psi D2  Hybrid enabled  (PG4)
   fill B-side lower     with  1 psi Ar  Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
  leave B-side upper     as is           Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
   fill B-main (C-side)  with 40 psi D2  Hybrid enabled  (PG3)
   fill NINJA            with  7 psi D2  DISABLED

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
  ECE, VUV, Z-bolo

Torvac setup: keep gate valves open during PULSE

Specific diagnostics: All standard core diagnostics, Reflctometry, TS (Edge
and Core), VB, ECE (GPC1 and GPC2), FRCECE, magnetics, MSE, PCI, TCI, Da,
HIREX, CXRS

ICRF Setup: will need 1-2 MW at 70 MHz starting with shot 1, then 1-2 MW at
  80 MHz once ITBs become reproducible
LH Setup: not needed
DNB: strongly desired
Cryopump: not needed

Run plan: Set up standard equilibrium with EDA H-modes with 70 Mhz and 5.4
T to obtain ITB ( 1-10 s hots). Attempt to get reproducible EDA H-modes
with 1-2 MW ICRF from J-port, which will produce ITBs. Argon will be
required for HIREX, but must be used sparingly and discontinued if ITBs
don~Rt form. PCI group needs 2-3 similar shots to answer the critical
question on the instability propagation and location. It may take 10-15
shots to get 3 good ones.

Once ITBs are being formed, determine optimum time to inject 80 Mhz rf:
Scan power and/or timing of central heating, checking to be sure that all
relevant data has been obtained: 15-20 shots.

Overall, there was good success at making ITBs with 80 Mhz off-axis ICRF. We
switched to this scenario when we had difficulty bringing up power on the 70
Mhz system. We wer able to get reliable operation out of J-port by mid
afternoon and began using to inject central power into the ITB. PCI got a
number of good shots with fluctuation data, but lost signal by the time the
J-port system started working well.

1080514025 Really nice ITB, brief arrest with J-port onset, but ends in
back transition at 1.3 s. J-port power will be increased from 0.6 MW to 1 MW.

1080514026 fizzle

1080514027 Really nice ITB but J-port at 1 MW fails to arrest the
density rise. It ends in back transition at 1.2 s. Repeat.

1080514028 Really nice ITB but J-port at 1 MW arrests the density rise
briefly, and then it rises again before ending in a back transition at
1.23 s. Lower J-port power to 0.8 MW.

1080514029 Really nice ITB but J-port at 0.8 MW arrests the density rise
briefly, and then it rises again before ending in a back transition at
1.32 s. Increase J-port power to 1.4 MW.

1080514030 Engineering fault.

1080514031 The plasma was beginning an ITB when the J-port system came on at
1.5 MW and clobbered it.

MP501 Fluctuations during ITB

The machine ran extremely well today with these ITB plasmas.  The plan was
to use the 70 MHz (J-port) to heat off-axis and get the ITB, and use
on-axis heating with the 80 MHz (D&E) to arrest the peaking.  As it turns
out, the 70 MHz transmitters had lots of problems early on, so we reduced
the field to 4.5 T and used the 80 MHz to do off-axis heating on the
high-field side to get good ITBs.  But many of them collapsed because the
density and impurities continued to increase.  Eventually we were able to
get 2 MW of 70 MHz from J-port, but only for short pulse lengths.

The DNB has recovered quite a bit, and we fired into plasmas on a number of
shots (1080514024, for example) with beam parameters of 50 kV and 6 A.

There were a number of cells accesses, primarily for ICRF and for PCI, and
this resulted in a slightly reduced number of shot cycles.

            1 dud (gas valve power malfunctioned)
            2 fizzles
            0 power supply tests
            1 no-power MDS shot cycles

Confirmed the nl_04 was already programmed to 1.0e20 m-2.
