Goals:

Fill in LHCD current profiles (MSE) for 90 and 120 degree phasing (Virulent MHD again?)Ohmic only.

If time permits:

Try to force voltage to 0 by decreasing current during LH pulse


Approach:

Check if MHD reappears under conditions similar to 1080320020 and higher. If so, increase density to get rid of MHD and make MSE profile measurements for 90 and 120 degree phasing.

If time, try to get zero loop voltage by decresing I during LH pulse.

Also, run 7 T shots for Greg Wallace's study of hard x-ray emission vs. density

Good data are collected from the the limited plasmas. the flow drive story is still the same with additional data: mode conversion near axis drives plasma rotation, and the impurity ions are heated to temperature higher than Te.

Good shots:
shot 5: 50 ms He3. J minority heating. No rotation change.
shot 7: 150 ms He3. J mode conversion. significant rotation. Ti > Te
shot 10: D+E H-mode. rotation follows stored energy. Ti < Te
shot 12: D+E L-mode. little rotation change.

On shot 7, FPA tube on FMIT #3 lost vacuum.

LH had a half-day run today to try to fill in some points on the variation of current profile with n//. However, we stuck to n//=1.6 and 1.9 since we were getting good current drive with near zero voltage and MSE was functional.

However, the NB was weak until the middle of the run period, so only a few shots with MSE were obtained. Also we lost klystron 2 on cart 1 due to excessive body current around shot 20. Several shots were fired without LH due to the body current problem.

Two highlights:

Zero loop voltage maintained for ~200 ms (shot 22), although plasma seemed to be locked for the duration. When it unlocked, loop voltage rose. Also, very little rotation during the locked phase, rapidly increasing when it unlocks and strong MHD appears.

A 7 T shot, the last one, shot 26 with ramping density for Greg. Full LH pulse,
~ 800 kW.

The two mp's for today were MP378Mode conversion flow drive (shots 001-012) and MP515 LH scans with MSE (shots 013-026).

The reference shot for MP378 was 1080422026. The discharge had an USN configuration, 5.1T, 0.8 MA, nl_04=0.7e_20. There were a few early disruptions which are similar to the early disruptions in run 1080520. They appear to be injections. Later in the run, a LSN (010) was used which is quite similar to 1080422023. Transmitter 3 failed during this run.

The first shot of the day had a density that was twice the demand. The density settled to the request of nl_04=0.7e+20 by shot 004.

The second MP was 515. The reference shot was 1080320002. The discharge had a LSN configuration, 6.1 T, 0.8 MA, nl_04=0.4e+20. Later in the run, one of the LH tubes failed. Steve Wolfe reported locked modes during this run.

The final shot of the day was at 7 tesla. This only required that the field be increased from 6.2 T to 7 T. The complicating factor was that the engineering limit on the TF required change. Billy Cochran accomplished this change with his usual attention to detail. The shot worked perfectly.
