Purpose MP 554 MSE Calibrations with and without long pulse Ohmic and ICRF plasmas Session Leader: Jinseok Ko Physics Operator: Joseph Snipes ----------------- Engineering Setup ----------------- Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00 Power systems as on: 1080318029 Acoil: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot (standard) Hybrid Enabled Gas setup: Fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) leave NINJA as is DISABLED Enable gatevalves and shutters: ECE, VUV, DNB, Z-bolo Torvac gatevalve toggle (yes/no): no Boronization(yes/no): no Overnight ECDC (yes/no): no ICRF(yes/no): yes, would like high power, but J-port is out of action LH(yes/no): yes DNB(yes/no): yes Cryopump (yes/no): no Vessel temperature: 35/35/35 *** Keep magnet cooling on as if we were pulsing throughout the night *** Want to maintain a constant vessel temperature throughout the run if possible. *** No ECDC overnight or before the run and no boronization *** Run plan: First we will have about 8 shots with and without poloidal and toroidal fields but with gas for beam-into-gas calibration shots. Then, we will move to plasma shots starting from 1080312004 (Ohmic) with flattop to 1.5 s. Then, we will go to ICRF heated plasmas starting from 1080422013 but extending the flattop to 1.8 s with ICRF from 0.5 s to 1.5 s. Then, we will go to ICRF+LH starting from shot 1080306020 but using E-port rather than J-port since it is out of action. See the Session Leader run plan for more details. |

| The run started off with a TF ground fault after the first shot. The ground fault cleared but it resulted in a 45 minute delay in the experimental program. Shot 2 was a TF test that went fine. The program continued with DNB into gas test shots with TF and EF3 and with EF4 open. Then, shots 8 to 27 were plasma attempts of which there were two fizzles and 18 plasmas. The machine ran pretty well with only one early disruption. The ICRF and LH worked well and even ran simultaneously. A number of long H-modes were obtained. The MSE calibration I believe went well. See the Session Leader summary for the details. Finally, for shot 27, we ran a 7 T shot for Greg Wallace to finish off his thesis work. This shot and the last several shots were run without TF cooling to warm up the TF magnet to separate it from the cylinder to make it easier to remove the TF arms. There were 30 shots, 18 plasmas, 10 tests, and 2 fizzles. This ends the run campaign for 2008 and begins the long shutdown to inspect the TF joints. Physics operation is expected to resume approximately one year from now.

| MP554. MSE calibrations - torus temperature effects and background issues operated by J Snipes hosted by S Scott and J Ko Purposes: (1) To verify that the shot-to-shot drift in the MSE diagnostic can be reduced by maintaining the torus temperature constant. (2) To test the effect of the first lens heating on the MSE diagnostic within a shot (3) explore LH+ICRF effect on MSE background; and (4) explore ICRF effect on MSE background in D plasma (1) Temperature variation in the torus and MSE invessel canister: The key point in this part is to start the run with the constant torus temperature to see whether the mse shot-to-shot drift is reduced or not. The torus temperature had successfully been constant from the previous night around 35C. The mse shot-to-shot drift was significantly decreased compared with the 1080318 beam-into-gas run where the torus temperature was varing over 100C. However, the last beam-into-gas shot was taken at 5pm and it was drifted from the group of beam-into-gas shots. We had a lot of plasma shots (with icrf + lhcd) before this last gas shot and this changed the temperature a lot. beam-into-gas shots: 1, 3, 6, 7, 28 plasma shots: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 *About an hour delay due to the TF ground fault after shot 1 *Two BES piggyback shots (beam-iinto-gas with zero field): 4, 5 (2) Thermal-stress induced birefringence on the plasma facing lens duing a shot: This investigate the effect of instant (and intense) heating applied on the first MSE lens (L1). The two Ohmic flat phases before/after RF pulse are compared. To the first order, no significant change was observed. useful shots: 14,16 shot 13: no beam after rf shot 15: early disruption (3) LH+ICRF effect on MSE background: The main purpose of this is to see whether the rapid change in the MSE background correalted with ICRF and/or LH on/off is due to a particualr line on the spectrum or due to a particular bright spot in the vessel. Three different MSE filter-fiber swapping configurations were tried. config 1: normal, shot 21 config 2: ch3 and ch7 fibers swap the filters ch1 and ch6 fibers swap the filters shot 22 (17 and 18)* config 3: ch3 and ch9 fibers swap the filters ch6 and ch7 fibers swap the filters shot 24 *shot 17 - icrf timing was wrong, double null, no H mode *shot 18 - MSE channel 7 saturated (but not useless) shot 19, 23 - fizzle Tentative conclusion from this test is that the MSE background change is due to a particular bright spot in the vessel. (4) ICRF effect on MSE background in D plasma: Same purpose as part (3) but with ICRF only config 1: shot 26 config 2: shot 25 Similar tentative conclusion to part (3) |
