Physop summary for Friday, June 26, 2009 MP#298a: C-Mod startup and conditioning SL:? PO: wolfe EO: Pfeiffer, Cochran, Parkin This was a successful cleanup day. We worked the current up from 600kA to 1MA, although we did not succeed in getting a full rampdown discharge. The longest shot was the last, #31, a 1MA flattop which disrupted at 1.53sec, just into rampdown. Most of the successful discharges today had events (injections, surface heating?) which resulted in density rises during flattop. The density rarely dropped below 7e19 (nl04), which meant that there was essentially no D2 puff during the discharge, since the target was varied from 7e19 to 5e19. Plasmas fueled "off the wall", and evolved lots of hydrocarbons. All discharges disrupted, the first two of the day during current rise, the rest during flattop, except for #30 which went just after EOF. RGA trends were monitored throughout the day. As expected, higher currents were more effective in releasing dirt, and successive disruptions at the same current were progressively less productive. The 1MA disruption on shot#30 produced so much hydrocarbon that the pressure remained above 2e-6 for 45 minutes. I did some playing with the startup, including tweking the EF3 voltage to try to increase Bzdot (shot#16-20) and re-doing the seg1 rcur waveform to start at 0.5m and swing out between 10 and 20msec, which is what the observer claims is happening anyway. It's not clear if this was helpful or not, but it didn't seem to cause additional difficulties so I left it that way. I made one 10A ef4 tweak and lots of pg4 adjustments attempting to improve the startup shot-to-shot. Best sequence was three in a row (6-8) and four out of five (6-10). After increasing the current from 600 to 750kA, we never got another two in a row. After shot#3 Bob zapped several magnetics signals, including BP17_JK which is used for both control and processed data. It turns out that this bp loop had been bad since yesterday, and may have contributed to some of the fizzles after 1090625021. Mostly though, today's fizzles were attributable to dirt. After shot#17 Bob had to go back down to zap f20 partial flux loop. The broadcast messages from check_magnetics were not coming through today, even to Bob. This should be remedied ASAP, since physop's need to be alerted. I suspect an ssh authorization issue in the reply routine. I also made some minor adjustments to the RXL and ZXL to put the (efit inferred-) strike point closer to the middle of the divertor plate. We need to check the probe signals to see how reliable the efit strike locations are without f23 and f25. It claims to be way inside and have xpoints near the inner wall. I don't see anything broken in inputs or demands; loop voltage is ~5volts, the problem seems to be that the current is so low at seg switch, and I don't see why that is. Next: drop pg4 some more and go again
