Physop Plan
-------------

The main goal for Tuesday is to continue cleanup.

We would like to get multiple shots in a row without fizzles,
get through full rampdowns, and get the wall-sourced density
down to the point at which the feedback is actually calling
for deuterium puffing. Note that disruptions may be better for
cleanup than rampdowns, so we may want to program some intentional
disruptions.

Shot Plan:
1) Start from seg2 of shot#1090626028, the last 750kA plasma
on Friday. Bang away at this until we get at least two plasmas
in a row, since the 1MA disruption had such a long recovery time.
Monitor RGA for evolved hydrocarbons after shots.

2) Once the junk production from 750kA shots gets too low, return
to 1090626030 (1MA shot) and continue.

3) Once things start looking relatively clean at 1MA, we'll need to
run upper null and inner wall discharges to clean up those surfaces.
This is unlikely to happen this week.

Physop Summary for Tuesday, June 30, 2009
MP#298a: C-Mod startup
SL: wolfe
PO: wolfe
EO: Pierson, Parkin, Byford

The first half of the run went reasonably well. The 750kA
shots were running through rampdown, with relatively good
startup reliability. In one stretch (8-15) we got eight in a row.

The first two shots fizzled, and vacbrbz indicated the problem was too
negative Bz, despite starting with ef4 current the same as on the
last shots on Friday. Bz was corrected by changing IC_EF4 from -1280
to -1220, and this setting was successful for the rest of the day. A tweak
to -1240 late in the day, when the vacbrbz level seemed to have drifted
positive, was unsuccessful, and returning to -1220 seemed to work.

I spent a lot of time playing with gains
on the RCUR in segment 1, trying to reduce oscillations. Increasing
the D gain was somewhat effective in reducing the amplitude of the
oscillation, but at too high a level (above ~10) the analog output
was saturating at 10V on the high frequency component. Therefore,
it was necessary to reduce the P gain from 6 down to 3:5. This
could be revisited using a low-pass filter on the observer to
get rid of the high frequency, but I'll need to do some playing
to eliminate lag.

After shot#19 it seemed that the 750kA shots were not doing a lot,
so I raised the current to 1MA. Shot#21 was a successful 1MA plasma
that ramped all the way down. The density rose from wall-fueling to nearly
1e20. Shot#22 fizzled, and #23 disrupted at 1.5sec (EOF). This disruption
brought up the mass 16 and 28 by over an order of magnitude. This was the
last full plasma of the day. It was followed by 5 unsuccessful startups
(4 fizzles and a dud) and then and early disruption and another fizzle
to end the day.

The RF group succeeded in putting power (~.5MW) in from D-port antenna
on shot#23. Can't blame them for the disruption though.

Magnetics continued to be problematic. Bob had to zap B14_DE and F14,
both of which are used for control, as well as at least one other unused
BP loop. At some point the check_magnetics program started hanging
on the reply_user to granetz at cmodwsd50, and failed to write to the
check_magnetics_1090630.log logfile. Tom finally "fixed" this by removing
cmodwsd50 from the list of hosts. Unfortunately, this had the effect of
also turning off the broadcasts to cmodwsd50 using reply_host, so I
stopped getting the messages. Tom suggests rebooting cmodwsd50,
which I will do tonight after posting this summary. Then he can
put it back in the list of hosts on alcdaq3, maybe.

Setting up for first shot, back to 750kA program from Friday
Load from 1090626028
Seg1:
 RCUR offset=2000
 BR_0=0.0015
 IC_EF4U=-1280
 PG4 = 12msec
Seg 2:
Increase nl04 from 5e19 to 7e19 (see if we can get some D2 puff)
Change title from 0.6MA to 0.75MA
Check pg1 (Ar) puff is at 50ms
Load at 30-Jun-2009 07:33:52.00
Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Jun 30 2009 09:02:34:107AM1090630001Steve Wolfe
Shot#1: ICRF will try to pulse into plasma on this shot.
p0=2e-7
fizzle, at least the tv is on.
Got the checkmagnetics warning on f23
Late breakdown 9ms, bz0 looks too negative.

Next: ic_ef4 more positive

Jun 30 2009 09:42:04:653AM1090630002Steve Wolfe
Shot#2: ic_ef4 from -1280 to -1250
pg4 from 12ms to 14ms
Dud? No, very weak breakdown flash on halpha at 10ms
No CIII signal at all, bit noise level on the zmeter.
Bz did come up, still quite negative, swinging positive very fast.

BP14_DE is broken on this shot, Bob will try zapping it. This is
used in processed and in dpcs. Shouldn't affect the Bz reading though
And it was ok on shot#1.

If I believe the bz signal, I need another 30A positive on ef4,
but the breakdown didn't seem to like the change I made on 2.

Jun 30 2009 09:47:37:050AM1090630003Steve Wolfe
Shot#3: ic_ef4 from -1250 to -1220
plasma to 1.65sec. Breakdown at 5.5ms, good burnout on halpha, zmeter,
CIII has a lump. BZ0 at t=0 now around -.004, where it was on Friday; no
clue why the ef4 needs to be so positive.
Not quite puffing from pg3 yet.
Upper xpoint is getting close, plasma looks fat, efit thinks outer gap
is getting small (still doesn't have the new limiter info).
Next: pg4 down to 12ms

Jun 30 2009 09:52:31:893AM1090630004Steve Wolfe
Shot#4: pg4 down from 14 to 12ms
Let ITG come down to 1.0e-6 before I push the button this time
Including the rf tree in the pulse for shot#4.

Problem in init, no power shot
Critical error in init. Don't know which it was, the only one
that looks possible is the RF fft init.

Jun 30 2009 09:55:03:817AM1090630004Steve Wolfe
Shot#5: pg4 down from 14 to 12ms
Steve has turned off the rf dio2 and dpcs2 devices, so it shouldn't
stall us this time.

Jun 30 2009 10:11:40:720AM1090630005Steve Wolfe
Shot#5: pg4 down from 14 to 12ms
Steve has turned off the rf dio2 and dpcs2 devices, so it shouldn't
stall us this time.
According to josh, the magic command to find out what errors
are critical is
cmod_errors -e
(where -e means "essential")

p0=5.5e-7 in init.
short ugly plasma to .14sec or so.
Good breakdown and burnout, Looks like a big vertical thrash.
It's definitely going vertically unstable, not sure why.

Jun 30 2009 10:33:15:487AM1090630006Steve Wolfe
Shot#6: I don't see anything broken in the inputs,
just try a repeat and see if it does it again
plasma to 1.67 sec, similar to shot#3.
Still getting some early vertical thrashing until 0.2sec
larger before 0.1sec. Also on rcur, not sure what's driving
what.
Also, we're beginning to puff a little d2 on this one.

Jun 30 2009 10:49:23:847AM1090630007Steve Wolfe
Shot#7: Remove big early rcur excursion from seg1 waveform
see if that is affecting the early thrashes
Slow down the clearin ramp in rampdown
p0=1.0e-6 at init
fizzle. very strong fizzle, got to 70kA and hit outboard at 19ms
Maybe the waveform change between 10 and 20msec did it?
It does try to restrain the Bz rise
Next: put the waveform back, reduce the P gain on RCUR in seg1

Jun 30 2009 11:07:14:110AM1090630008Steve Wolfe
Shot#8: RCUR at [.001,.010] fomr .63 to .50,
P gain[0,.04] from [6.,7.] to [3.,3.]

p0=6.5e-7 at init
plasma to 1.8sec, still has thrashing early, maybe not as strong.
This time it looks like more rcur: oh2's are in phase
Had some hards early on that one, neuts/hards claims 4e11, but it's
not in the right place.

Next: reduce the rcur p gain a little more.

Jun 30 2009 11:19:22:877AM1090630009Steve Wolfe
Shot#9: P gain[0,.04,.06] from [3.,3.,7.] to [2.,2.,4]
p0=1.2e-6 at init
plasma to 1.83sec, early thrashing seems reduced, but rcur swings
further out in seg1. Also note rcur oscillation in sev 2 starting around
0.4 sec, just after crossover.

Next: put Pgain back to 3, increase D gain on RCUR in seg1

Jun 30 2009 11:36:08:143AM1090630010Steve Wolfe
Shot#10: P gain[0,.04,.06] from [2.,2.,4] to [2.,3,5]
         D gain[.04,.06] from [6,6] to [12,12]
in seg 2: increase clearin from 0 to .005
p0=1.3e-6 at init
plasma to 1.83 sec
Rcur still outside in seg1, thrash amplitude reduced.
inner gap increased, outer moved off (incorrect) limiter

Next: increase seg1 D gain a little more, try to "stabilize" feedback

Jun 30 2009 11:51:35:750AM1090630011Steve Wolfe
Shot#11: D gain[.04,.06] from [12,12] to [20,20] at [.02,.06]
in seg 2: rcur from .662 to .660
p0=1.5e-6 at init

plasma to 1.87 sec, almost all the way down. Apparent right gap up to 5mm
initial rcur thrash no smaller, still going to +5000 rcur error.
Next: increase the p gain.

Jun 30 2009 12:07:30:363PM1090630012Steve Wolfe
Shot#12: Seg1 rcur P gain @[0,.04,.06] from [2,3,5] to [2,5,7]
 D still at [6,20,20]
p0=1.7e-6 at init
plasma to 1.84sec
seg1 rcur thrash is a little bigger, maybe a small improvement in
average position.

Jun 30 2009 12:22:42:677PM1090630013Steve Wolfe
Shot#13: Move P gain point from 5@.04s to 5@.02s
p0=2.0e-6 at init
plasma to 1.86sec
Early thrashes are bigger, also some on zcur; it's not as bad
as at the beginning of the run, but it's clearly worse than last shot.
It does seem a little better on the average position.

Next: One more tweak at the D gain

Jun 30 2009 12:34:56:503PM1090630014Steve Wolfe
Shot#14: Seg1 rcur D gain at [.02,.06] from 20 to 40
I expect this one to be too much
IGT=1.9e-6 at init
Plasma full length
the rcur thrashes are somewhat damped relative to #13.
The mouts have a lot of hi freq hash that the supply can't follow,
but the averages sort of make sense. However, the mouts are also
saturating the AO modules, so this is a bad idea. #13 was also
saturating, with gain of 20. I should back off

Jun 30 2009 12:48:03:863PM1090630015Steve Wolfe
Shot#15: Seg1 rcur D gain at [.02,.06] from 40 to 10
plasma disrupts at 1.36sec
The early rcur oscillations double in size (at least), not related
to the disruption, which seems to be an injection.
Mout is now unsaturated, except on EF3 where it is
banging on the top rail. Looks like I'll have to drop the P gain again.

Jun 30 2009 12:57:31:210PM1090630016Steve Wolfe
Shot#16: Seg1 rcur P gain at [.02,.06] from [5,7] to [3,4]
fizzle, maybe should have dropped pg4 after the disruption.
Or maybe it was the gain change, seems to move inside.

Jun 30 2009 01:15:07:130PM1090630017Steve Wolfe
Shot#17: Seg1 rcur P gain at [.02,.06] from [5,7] to [3,4] (as on last shot)
pg 4 from 12 to 10ms
 plasma full length
RCUR is swinging out again, but I think this may be about as good as
I can get it without applying a lowpass filter to the observer. I could
do that but I don't want to try it on the fly. Also, I want to think
about what the units of these gains really are and whether these
values make sense.

Next: One more like this and then go up in current, I think.

Jun 30 2009 01:28:47:193PM1090630018Steve Wolfe
Shot#18: One more like this and then go up in current, I think.
p0=1.7e-6 at init
Bz0 at -.005 is creeping up, to around -.0025 on 17.

Critical error in init, josh is checking on what.
cmod_errors -e doesn't work for me, reports 1 errors on shot17
doesn't say what.
Need to specify the shot:
olfe@cmodwsd50 ~$ cmod_errors -e 1090630018
\CMOD::TOP.RF.TRANSMITTERS:DIO2:INIT_ACTION           %TDI-E-TdiABORT, Program requested abort
\CMOD::TOP.RF.TRANSMITTERS:DT196AO:INIT_ACTION %TDI-E-TdiGOTO, GOTO target label not found
\CMOD::TOP.RF.TRANSMITTERS:DT196_XMTR12:INIT_ACTION %TDI-E-TdiGOTO, GOTO target label not found

Took a no power anyway. Access for RF guys to fix this stuff!

Jun 30 2009 02:16:39:360PM1090630019Steve Wolfe
Shot#19: One more like 17 and then go up in current, I think.
plasma full length (1.9sec)

Next: More amps igor

Jun 30 2009 02:30:37:327PM1090630020Steve Wolfe
Shot#20: Go to 1MA
dud, Need to raise the gas?
Fields look ok.

Jun 30 2009 02:48:51:547PM1090630021Steve Wolfe
Shot#21: pg4 from 10 to 13msec
Still trying for 1MA.

plasma full length
Density rises to almost 1e20, programmed for 7e19, no puff after .5sec
Current overshoots before 0.7sec, there's a gain switch at 0.65 from 3.5
to 9.

Next: set rf tree to /include

Jun 30 2009 02:56:01:653PM1090630022Steve Wolfe
Shot#22: Increase Ip P gain to 4 at .356sec
I hope that isn't too close to crossover, but I think it is.
include rf tree again
fizzle, inside I think. Maybe too much junk from the previous shot.
I'll take advantage of this to move that gain switch,
Also Ian is pointing out that we're going nose limited early,
maybe I'll deal with that too.

Jun 30 2009 03:20:52:247PM1090630023Steve Wolfe
Shot#23: P gain at .356sec back to 2.6, add a point at 0.5sec,6.0
Move early rxl point from .005 to .01

plasma disrupts at 1.5sec, looks like an injection
got some rf from dport at 1sec
Still going nose limited early
IGT is still on the 5 scale at 8 minutes after the shot.

Jun 30 2009 03:42:32:280PM1090630024Steve Wolfe
Shot#24: Move zcur from -.009 to 0 at 0.1sec in seg2
pg4 to from 13 to 11msec
IGT at 20minutes is still 3.4e-6
Change the rga head while we're waiting.
Go at 30minutes, 2.5e-6, expect a fizz

And got one. Hardly any current, moves in I guess,
zmeter rises after breakdown, so does pressure.
Never had a chance

Jun 30 2009 03:54:26:420PM1090630025Steve Wolfe
Shot#25: Move zcur from -.009 to 0 at 0.1sec in seg2
Increase rxl gain at .18sec and after from 2 to 4
IGT at 1.7e-6 at init
fizzle again. breakdown is a little later, very lumpy H-alpha
bz still creeping up, as long as we're not getting plasma anyway
I'll tweak that too.

Jun 30 2009 04:08:45:233PM1090630026Steve Wolfe
Shot#26: ic_ef4 from -1220 to -1240
Move zcur from -.009 to 0 at 0.1sec in seg2
Increase rxl gain at .18sec and after from 2 to 4
IGT at 1.4e-6 at init
fizzle, later breakdown 8ms. No current. No burnout
Bz did come down, but it didn't like it, still rising too fast

Next: put ef4 back to -1220

Jun 30 2009 04:20:29:137PM1090630027Steve Wolfe
Shot#27: ic_ef4 from -1240 to -1220
Move zcur from -.009 to 0 at 0.1sec in seg2
Increase rxl gain at .18sec and after from 2 to 4
IGT at 1.1e-6 at init
Another fizzle. Mass 28 and Mass 16 are both above 1.5e-8.
I don't think this is going to recover today. Too late to ecdc,
try dropping the fill some more, probably get a dud

Jun 30 2009 04:33:09:680PM1090630028Steve Wolfe
Shot#28: pg4 from 11 to 9msec
Move zcur from -.009 to 0 at 0.1sec in seg2
Increase rxl gain at .18sec and after from 2 to 4
IGT at 1.0e-6 at init
And it was a dud. And f14 has no finite signal. Needs zapping

Jun 30 2009 04:50:05:120PM1090630029Steve Wolfe
Shot#29: pg4 from 9 to 11msec
Bob has zapped f14 again
Move zcur from -.009 to 0 at 0.1sec in seg2
Increase rxl gain at .18sec and after from 2 to 4
IGT at 8e-7 at init, but mass 28 and 16 are still high.
plasma to .2sec then disrupts

That's probably all for today. May as well try one more though.

Jun 30 2009 04:58:14:400PM1090630030Steve Wolfe
Shot#29: Give it a try.
1.5e-6 in init.
Fizzle

That's all for today
