| D and E antennas have been both conditioned up to 1 MW level with few faults. The FFT system was working properly on E port.
The RF pulses were set to no more than 300 ms for each antenna, and power no more than 1 MW, in order to avoid the erosion of the boron layer on boron coated tiles. Some disruptions by injection seemed to be related to E antenna power above 0.8 MW. |

| Jul 8 2009 08:59:56:067AM | Yijun Lin | We will run standard plasmas developed in the last several runs.
nl=0.9, Bt = 5.4 T, Ip = 0.9 MA. We run D and E antenna from low to high power shot by shot, check out all the signals/arc protection/matching/FFT etc, and aim to get as much power as possible. (see entries under RF topic for this run). | |
| Jul 8 2009 09:35:19:897AM | 1090708001 | Yijun Lin | E port to plasma, 0.4 MW. All signals/control/FFT worked.
H/(H+D) @ 14% FMIT #1 failed to come up HV. The cause has been traced to Hi-yard. We will run E antenna only until FMIT#1 is fixed, |
| Jul 8 2009 10:07:58:067AM | 1090708002 | Yijun Lin | TF test.
Alan and Rick replaced a fuse in Hi-yard. FMIT#1 should have been fixed. |
| Jul 8 2009 10:18:17:630AM | 1090708003 | Yijun Lin | disrupted at 0.5 sec. no RF. |
| Jul 8 2009 11:09:34:333AM | 1090708006 | Yijun Lin | E port ran at 0.8 MW. 6 faults.

next: run D earlier, and see whether the disruption was caused by E antenna |
| Jul 8 2009 02:01:17:880PM | 1090708018 | Yijun Lin | E was causing disruption.
H/(H+d) = 25% Next: lower E power a little and see whether we can avoid disruption. |
| Jul 8 2009 02:08:37:350PM | 1090708019 | Yijun Lin | E caused disruption again (although the power demand is rather low).
D ran well. Next: delay E more, and also lower power. |
| Jul 8 2009 02:25:38:490PM | 1090708020 | Yijun Lin | No disruption. D and E ran.
Next: raise E power. |

| Jul 8 2009 08:49:47:983AM | Robert Granetz | Load shot 1090707020 from the end of yesterday's run. | |
| Jul 8 2009 10:28:45:490AM | 1090708001 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.9 MA, 5.3 T, nl_04=0.9e20 m-2. Kappa=1.73, and constant.
There was a TF ground indication at TF turn-on. Prf_E=0.4 MW.
Power room and cell access for RF, TS.
Next shot: Change TF programming so that the demand has a finite ramp, rather than
an instantaneous jump. We'll have a TF-only test for shot 02.
|
| Jul 8 2009 10:28:23:647AM | 1090708002 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 02 -- Test of TF only, under hybrid control, using a finite rampup demand, rather than an instantaneous
rampup. Good test; no spikes, no ground indication.
Next shot: go for plasma
|
| Jul 8 2009 10:22:58:380AM | 1090708003 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 03 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.54 s.
Cell access for RF.
Next shot: repeat, no changes.
|
| Jul 8 2009 10:37:21:427AM | 1090708004 | Robert Granetz | Shot 04 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 1 ms (to 16 ms) |
| Jul 8 2009 10:55:07:083AM | 1090708005 | Robert Granetz | Shot 05 -- Fizzle. Next shot: decrease pre-fill another 2 ms (to 14 ms). |
| Jul 8 2009 11:25:38:677AM | 1090708006 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 06 -- Plasma. Disrupts at t=0.83 s. Prf_E=0.75 MW, numerous faults. Lots
of hard x-rays. There was some peculiar thing flying past the WIDE2 view
immediately after the disruption.
Next shot: I'm tempted to reduce the pre-fill some more because of this disruption,
but I want to avoid the early hard x-rays, so I'll leave the pre-fill as
is. We'll probably get a fizzle.
|
| Jul 8 2009 11:38:26:863AM | 1090708007 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Some early hards. Prf_D=0.6 MW, Prf_E=0.5-0.75 MW.
Next shot: enable argon (50 ms); enable HIREX-SR gate valve; add 1 ms to pre-fill.
Also increase early PG3 programming in seg 1 a bit.
|
| Jul 8 2009 11:45:52:520AM | 1090708008 | Robert Granetz | Shot 08 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.73 s. No early hard x-rays though. E-port faulted a lot. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 1 ms. |
| Jul 8 2009 12:00:57:523PM | 1090708009 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. Lots of early hard x-rays again.
Prf_D=0.9 MW w/faulting, Prf_E=0.75 MW clean.
H/(H+D)=25%
Next shot: increase pre-fill 2 ms, increase early PG3 programming
|
| Jul 8 2009 12:13:24:490PM | 1090708010 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 10 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.78 s. This time it was clearly an injection that
can be seen on the xtomo signals. E-port RF faulted a lot. No early hard x-rays.
Next shot: reduce pre-fill 2 ms because of this disruption
|
| Jul 8 2009 12:20:32:553PM | 1090708011 | Robert Granetz | Shot 11 -- Fizzle. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Jul 8 2009 12:39:45:193PM | 1090708012 | Robert Granetz | Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Huge hard x-ray signal. Prf_D=1 MW, Prf_E=1 MW. Next shot: increase pre-fill by 2 ms |
| Jul 8 2009 12:51:42:613PM | 1090708013 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. No hard x-rays. Prf_D=1 MW, Prf_E faulted a lot.
H/(H+D)=0.23-0.28
Next shot: add 1 ms to pre-fill
|
| Jul 8 2009 01:02:06:863PM | 1090708014 | Robert Granetz | Shot 14 -- Fizzle. Certainly didn't expect that. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 2 ms |
| Jul 8 2009 01:22:29:677PM | 1090708015 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 15 -- Dud! F-side ratiomatic signal is bad; don't know what the breakdown pressure was.
Null is normal. No magnetics errors. Ron Rosati tells me that there was a pressure
burst several minutes prior to this shot, but it had pumped out when I took the shot.
Next shot: No DPCS changes; what the torus pressure closely
|
| Jul 8 2009 01:28:53:787PM | 1090708016 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. No hard x-rays. There was a big injection of something
at t=0.85 s, but this time the plasma survived. E-port antenna was faulting badly
at that time.
Next shot: no DPCS changes
|
| Jul 8 2009 01:43:25:613PM | 1090708017 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 17 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.87, which is almost exactly when the injection occurred on the
preceding shot.
Next shot: Get the fizzle out of the way. I've asked Yijun to swap the timing of the D and E
antennas. Next shot, D-port will come on first, then E-port. Let's see if that
changes the disruption timing.
|
| Jul 8 2009 01:58:58:660PM | 1090708018 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 18 -- Plasma. This one disrupted at t=1.1 s. I think the delayed disruption time is because
I had Yijun swap the timing of D and E antennas. Now D-port goes first (Prf_D=1 MW), and
E-port comes on at t=1.0 s and goes until the disruption. This is exactly what one
would see if E-port is causing the disruptions.
Next shot: repeat (probably have to get through a fizzle first though)
|
| Jul 8 2009 02:09:55:210PM | 1090708019 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 19 -- Plasma. Disrupts at t=1.1 s again, which is while E-port is on. Lots of hard x-rays,
but if I increase the pre-fill, I think I'll get a fizzle.
Next shot: delay E-port turn-on until t=1.4 s
|
| Jul 8 2009 02:32:26:317PM | 1090708020 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. This time the E-port power was reduced to 0.6 MW.
Almost no hard x-rays.
Next shot: repeat, no DPCS changes. Raise E-port power.
|
| Jul 8 2009 02:51:50:007PM | 1090708021 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 21 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.33 s, just after E-port antenna turns on (at slightly higher
power than on the preceding shot). A lot of fingers seem to be pointing at E-port as
the trigger for the disruptions.
Next shot: increase outer gap by 4 mm (from 15 to 19 mm) by reducing RCUR by 2 mm
|
| Jul 8 2009 03:01:34:880PM | 1090708022 | Robert Granetz | Shot 22 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.36 s, again when E-port is on. The outer gap increase 1-3 mm. Next shot: tweak RCUR some more to make the outer gap more constant, and to increase it another 1 mm. |
| Jul 8 2009 03:17:03:787PM | 1090708023 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 23 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.28 s, which is before the E-port turn-on time, and well after
D-port turned off. Lots of hard x-rays. Outer gap = 19 +/- 1 mm.
Next shot: no DPCS changes
|
| Jul 8 2009 03:21:06:710PM | 1090708024 | Robert Granetz | Shot 24 -- Fizzle. Next shot: increase RCUR by 0.5 mm to reduce elongation slightly |
| Jul 8 2009 03:34:07:020PM | 1090708025 | Robert Granetz | Shot 25 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce CLEARIN by 1 mm to further reduce the elongation |
| Jul 8 2009 03:51:31:427PM | 1090708026 | Robert Granetz | Shot 26 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.45 s. Next shot: reduce CLEARIN again, this time by 4 mm, to further decrease the elongation |
| Jul 8 2009 04:03:53:770PM | 1090708027 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 27 -- Plasma. Good shot. The CLEARIN change reduced kappa to 1.71, and kept n/ncrit at 1.1.
Prf_D=0.85 MW, Prf_E=0.75 MW. Some hard x-rays. H/(H+D)=0.25-0.28
Next shot: increase pre-fill by 1 ms
|
| Jul 8 2009 04:15:25:913PM | 1090708028 | Robert Granetz | Shot 28 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 1 ms |
| Jul 8 2009 04:26:56:223PM | 1090708029 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 29 -- Plasma. Good shot. Left gap=1.1 cm, right gap=1.6 cm. kappa=1.71.
No hard x-rays.
Next shot: no DPCS changes; move E-port earlier
|
| Jul 8 2009 04:38:23:067PM | 1090708030 | Robert Granetz | Shot 30 -- Fizzle...our classic alternating pattern. Next shot: make sure it's an odd shot number |
| Jul 8 2009 04:53:26:537PM | 1090708031 | Robert Granetz | Shot 31 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf_D=1 MW (clean), Prf_E=0.85 MW (faulting). Next shot: no DPCS changes. Maybe we should skip the even shot number. |
| Jul 8 2009 05:02:28:630PM | 1090708032 | Robert Granetz | Shot 32 -- Fizzle. Let's hope that overnight ECDC will get us out of this alternating pattern. End of run |
| Jul 8 2009 05:30:09:163PM | 1090708032 | Robert Granetz | After the run, I zapped BP17_BC and BP23_BC. (Neither are being used for anything.) |
