| Run Plan for 1090715 MP#557 "Commissioning of new divertor heat flux diagnostics" Goal A new set of heat-flux instruments was installed to diagnose C-Mod's lower divertor. We wish to test and optimize the performance of these diagnostics, with particular focus on examining the heat-flux footprint around the outer divertor strike point. We also wish to condition-up the scanning probes, which requires some careful gap programming and repeated shots. Approach Dial-up some standard lower-single null discharges with controlled inner/outer gaps but also with some control on the outer divertor strike point location. The latter may be accomplished by preprogramming the boundary shape. However, it is more desirable to implement a feedback control of the strike-point position, if possible. We will start by taking a series of nearly identical discharges with stationary or slow sweeps of the outer divertor strike-point, watching the behavior of the heat-flux sensors. A coarse density scan may be performed if things go well. Some cell access may be required to debug systems. We should start with 0.8 MA discharges, but then push to 1.0 MA to increase heat flux signals. Key Diagnostics: Divertor heat-flux sensors, divertor IR system, all scanning probe systems (ASP, FSP, WASP), Desired but not required: edge Thomson, gas-puff imaging (diodes and fast camera) We may need multiple cell entries to debug diagnosics. Plan Start with a recent 0.8 MA, 5.4 tesla discharge (or something close and tweak it). - Left gap ~1.2 cm, right gap ~1.6 cm - Outer divertor strike point on the lower part of tile number 2. - Set NL04 = 0.6e20 m^-2 - If NINJA is available, fill to 10 PSI D2 - ICRF - may piggyback after 1.2 on some shots - Fixed Strike Points - A. NL04 ~ 0.6, Ip = 0.8 MA - 5 shots Adjust gaps as necessary to optimize scanning probe targeting. Try to hold outer divertor strike point at a fixed location during the shot - the lower half of tile number two. We want to hold the heat flux footprint on the outer divertor fixed so that the calorimeter delta-Ts (before and after shot) can be used to map it out. Assess temperature rises. We may want to change to 1.0 MA. If so, we will need to take more shots to set this up. Assuming that we stay at 0.8 MA, do the following: - Shot-by-Shot Strike Point Scan - B. NL04 ~ 0.6, Ip = 0.8 MA - 5 shots Slowly march the strikepoint up the divertor plate on a shot-by-shot basis - about a centimeter in the vertical position of the strike point per shot. C. NL04 ~ 0.8, Ip = 0.8 MA - 5 shots Repeat C at this new density D. NL04 ~ 1.0, Ip = 0.8 MA - 5 shots Repeat C at this new density E. NL04 ~ 1.2, Ip = 0.8 MA - 5 shots Repeat C at this new density F. NL04 ~ 0.6, Ip = 1.0 MA - 5 shots Repeat C at this new density and current |

| Run Summary for 1090715 MP#557 "Commissioning of new divertor heat flux diagnostics" This was a productive run. The primary goal was to develop discharges with controlled outer divertor strike point and to use this to test and optimize embedded heat flux sensor signals. Ian managed to implement some kind of feedback control of the outer divertor strike point in just a few shots. By shot 7 we had a 0.8 MA LSN discharge with the strike point roughly stationary on Langmuir probe #4 on the outer divertor and were confident enough to start exercising the ASP, FSP and WASP systems. (As an aside, we discovered that the coil polarity on the A-port WASP drive was reversed. We corrected it during a cell entry.) Unfortunately, surface heat flux sensor number 4 and 10 decided to die early, leaving us with only 4 good remaining sensors: 1, 3, 5 and 9. And with the strike point on Langmuir probe #4, surface sensor #5 is just slightly below the heat flux footprint. All the while, Jim Terry and Josh Payne were busily trying to get the IR camera up and running. View alignment was the primary obstacle, followed by the lack of a trigger. Numerous cell entries were required. Anyway, we pushed on with trying to fix the strikepoint onto probe #1. This proved to be more difficult, requiring many tweaks and shots without firing the scanning probes, just to be safe. By shot 21 we started poking the probes at a reasonable discharge with strike points hovering around probes 1 and 2. On shot 22 the IR camera demonstrated success - a spectacular movie of strike point heat on the J-divertor ramped tiles! Hat's off to Jim Terry and Josh Payne for cobbling this together under the pressure. Still, with the strike point on 1-2, not a lot of heat was arriving on the good surface heat flux sensors. The calorimeters appeared to respond ok (11 of 14 working), but the timescales look a bit long - something that will need more analysis. Finally, we ran shots with the strikepoint on probe#2 (shots 28 and beyond). This lead to some nice reproducible temperature rises on surface sensor #5 during the shot, roughly 300 C. These should provide a cross-calibration with the IR system. Having done the strikepoint control part of the MP, we started varying the density. Shot 35 was the first attempt at this (NL04 ~ 0.8e20). We will pick up on this in tomorrow's run. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Shot log 1-no power test. | Strkpsi control for testing of the divertor calorimetry.
Summary _______ Strkpsi control was implemented successfully, relaxing the control of zxl. For control at low positions it was necessary to draw the rxl ramping to about -2cm (still under PCS control) by the end of the shot. This provided the ability to meet the demand for a low strike point without excessively moving the x-point down. Scorecard ---------

| Jul 15 2009 10:22:13:510AM | 1090715006 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Good control except for the OH1 crossover.
Tweak rcur out at .2s and .5s. Tweak Ip rise. Load. |
| Jul 15 2009 10:30:44:433AM | 1090715007 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Runaways caused by initation bounce. Very early breakdown.
Tweak rxl out a bit at .5 to .6s. Got the stupid message back and made incorrect timing of load. So make the next a no power shot. |
| Jul 15 2009 10:41:34:277AM | 1090715008 | Ian Hutchinson | No power shot |
| Jul 15 2009 11:01:17:433AM | 1090715009 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Disrupts at 1.3s. Monstrous injection.
Lower zxl gain at .2s to avoid oscillation I hope. |
| Jul 15 2009 11:11:36:463AM | 1090715010 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.
Increase PG3 in segment 1 to 30V, to try to minimize runaways. |
| Jul 15 2009 11:23:15:527AM | 1090715011 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Still runaways.
Increase fill puff to 17ms from 15ms. |
| Jul 15 2009 11:37:58:543AM | 1090715012 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.
ICEF4 to -1300 from -1290A. |
| Jul 15 2009 11:50:43:543AM | 1090715013 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Runaways still.
Fill puff to 19ms. |
| Jul 15 2009 12:03:36:653PM | 1090715014 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.
strk coordinates are .62, -.52. We want to move the strikepoint down by 4cm. So we use keywords Zsout=-.56 Rsout=.624. These are not rstrk. An unfortunate error of documentation. Move the EF1 crowbar to .15s. Load. |
| Jul 15 2009 12:24:41:810PM | 1090715015 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at 1.44s. Shape is very strangely distorted in trying to
keep the strikepoint low. Nominal strkpsi is -1mm. (Versus about +1mm). Get rid of keywords on strkpsi. Set p-value to -.1mm. Install an RXL ramp to -.04 at 1.5s. |
| Jul 15 2009 12:35:13:497PM | 1090715016 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts in rampdown.
Zeros EF2L at 1s. Back off on RXL ramp to peak at -.021. Install some more gradual steps in the release of strkpsi |
| Jul 15 2009 12:47:49:810PM | 1090715017 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma ramps down.
Increase strkpsi to -1.5mm. Make ef2byef4 -3000 from -2000 at >1s |
| Jul 15 2009 01:09:57:040PM | 1090715018 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma ramps down. Forgot to load. A repeat.
Load. |
| Jul 15 2009 01:29:46:997PM | 1090715019 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.
Lower zxl at .25s. Increase strkpsi gain to 6 from 5. Enable argon. |
| Jul 15 2009 01:42:55:497PM | 1090715020 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Reduce RXL during first .7s. Increase clearin by 5mm to 0. Load. |
| Jul 15 2009 01:55:41:470PM | 1090715021 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
The oscillation in the first .7s seems to be triggered by the turn on of EF4byEF2 Turn on more gradually. Also draw the ICEF4 to be less positive at .3s which appears to be a related issue. Tweak the clearin up at .25s |
| Jul 15 2009 02:13:43:707PM | 1090715022 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle for no obvious reason. |
| Jul 15 2009 02:38:39:250PM | 1090715024 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. |
| Jul 15 2009 02:47:34:640PM | 1090715025 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.
strkspi D to 1. Physics PID is then D=.001, P=6 (1/s). Should be a miniscule effect. |
| Jul 15 2009 02:57:59:220PM | 1090715026 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. |
| Jul 15 2009 03:19:35:503PM | 1090715027 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.
Strkpsi to -.7mm. D to 3. Adjust RXL in .4s time |
| Jul 15 2009 03:28:09:250PM | 1090715028 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.
strkspi D to 6. |
| Jul 15 2009 03:44:02:390PM | 1090715029 | Ian Hutchinson | Vertical position error throws the plasma away at about 80kA.
Can't really see why. |
| Jul 15 2009 03:56:54:033PM | 1090715030 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Injection at .63s attributed to ASP. |
| Jul 15 2009 04:21:40:173PM | 1090715031 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. Strong. Looks like a vertical problem.
Br offset to .0007 from .001. |
