Plan Start with a recent 0.8 MA, 5.4 tesla discharge (or something close and tweak it). - Left gap ~1.2 cm, right gap ~1.6 cm - Outer divertor strike point on the lower part of tile number 2. - Set NL04 = 0.6e20 m^-2 - If NINJA is available, fill to 10 PSI D2 - ICRF - may piggyback after 1.2 on some shots - Fixed Strike Points - A. Run Summary for 1090716 MP#557 "Commissioning of new divertor heat flux diagnostics" - day 2 This was another productive run for the MP, despite the early problems noted by Steve Wolfe (see PO_Summary). For some reason, the strikepoint feedback control that worked so well during yesterday's run seemed to not be workable today. Steve had to abandon the initial plan, reload some standard shots to get things going, and then tweak up the strikepoint control stuff again. As a result, we didn't get going until shot#14, when Steve indicated that it was safe enough to proceed. We spent the remainder of the day doing a fine density scan, covering the range of NL04 ~0.5 to 0.8, with a heavy focus on the lowest density shots since these were best for the IR system (low plasma light). The strike point tended to hover around Langmuir probes 3 and 4, which allowed surface heat sensor #5 to receive good signal. As plasma density was raised and the divertor transitioned from sheath-limited to high-recycling, there was a noticeable decrease in energy arriving on the divertor (reduced tile delta-T there) and increase in energy arriving on the GH and AB limiters (increased tile delta-T there). It will be interesting to quantify these results. We took the time to make sure that the scanning probes (A-WASP, FSP, ASP) had good quality profiles before moving to the next density. We also took some probe scans in fluctuation-mode, allowing profiles of the radial fluctuation-induced particle fluxes to be recorded (a topic of interest for Noah Smick's thesis). The IR camera system performed well. Jim Terry and Josh Payne played with optimizing things, redoing the non-uniform corrections, installing a plasma-light filter for the higher density shots and recording some long-time exposures to calibrate the image with respect to the divertor tile temperatures. Tile sensors were clearly visible in the image, appearing to be brighter. Perhaps this is caused by a slightly rougher surface on the sensor. (We had to file these down by hand during installation.) Using a hand-draw line readout feature of the camera software, it was possible to display poloidal profiles of raw IR light level across the divertor target. These showed some nice smooth decays on both sides of the peak heat flux. However, the peak often displayed a double-maximum feature. Anyway, these line-outs (and the heat-flux profiles implied) are exactly what we need to automate for future runs, systematically recording and writing footprint profiles to the MDS+ tree. At various cell entries, we also tried swapping the input electronics cards for some of the calorimeter thermocouples to ones with high common-mode rejection. These reduced significantly the noise pickup level during a plasma shot. The remaining noise is clearly correlated with PF and TF voltages, indicating that these are induced by loops in the TC cabling. As a result of the past two run days, we now have a good idea of how our heat-flux sensor systems can perform and what is needed from the plasma control perspective to get C-Mod to operate with fixed strike-point location. It is clear that we have a lot of software to write in order to properly automate much of the heat-flux data taking and analysis. It is also clear that there is little headroom for operating with fixed strikepoint location on C-Mod. Our heat flux analysis techniques will therefore need to accommodate shots with divertor strike-point sweeping. Physics Operator Summary for Thursday, July 16, 2009 MP#557 Commisioning of new divertor heat flux diagnostics SL: LaBombard PO: wolfe EO: Parkin, Cochran, Dekow The run got off to a slow start when the first shot had to go to a No Power cycle because pcdaqdpcs3 was offline. It turned out that a UPS fault in the morning had resulted in the ethernet power switch alcpwr16 being powered down, and it had failed to restore power to the computers, cpci, etc. when power was restored, so nothing rebooted. I powered the switch outlets up manually from the interface room and everything rebooted successfully, except possibly the KVM monitor which came on but wouldn't allow us to enter its password. We then lost the next shot to a power supply (EF4) that needed to be reset, and shot 3 was killed by the OH2_Force interlock type 2 fault. This turned out to be real, as the EF1L was swinging negative to -7.5kA after it's early (.15sec) crowbar, apparently driven by the STRKPSI control. It hadn't been doing that yesterday, on the shot that I loaded from, but it was doing it today. This shot had runaways and somewhat different voltages, but the behavior was pretty dramatic. I then had the crowbar delayed back to .2 sec, and this marginally cured the OH2_Force fault, but the general behavior of driving EF1L to the negative rail and EF2L to the positive (zero) rail persisted, and shot#4 disrupted at 0.38sec. Shot#4 also had saturating xrays, and we observed heating on the K-port limiter and not on the GH, which is an interesting effect since our observations in thermal plasma are that K-port takes very little heat even while GH at the midplane does. Shots#6 and 7 were standard LSN discharges (in seg3) with normal xpt control, loaded from 1090709023, intended to get back a full length discharge and try to reduce the runaways. I raised the pre-puff, made some Bz tweaks, a change to the EF2 current demand, and added pg3 puffing in segment 1. After a full-length shot#7, albeit with some remaining runaways we went back to the STRKPSI controlled shots Shot#8 was back to Brian's shot, somewhat modified, and with increased PG3 in segment 1. This one got rid of the runaways, and ran full length. but the EF1L and EF2L were still railed for an extended period, and there were large vertical thrashes. The strikepoint did not seem as well-controlled as yesterday. After some more tweaks I delayed the big step in STRKPSI gain until 0.45sec (after crossover) and barely got rid of the railing coil currents. After some more tweaks to adjust gaps for probe targeting, we settled on a satisfactory target shot on #14, with the strike and heat deposition pretty stationary on tile#3. The strkpsi target was drawn at -.0007, as on the last group of shots on Wednesday, but with the initial points also at that value, since the early error driving the thrash was negative anyway. We then proceeded to do a fine scale density scan with fixed strike point, which took up the remainder of the run (#15-28). The IR camera was getting good data, clearly showing the heating on the inclined tiles. On many shots there appeared to be a bimodal heating pattern, similar to observations on DIII-D which Evans has attributed to the infamous homoclinic tangle. Brian also was firing all the scanning probes, all of which seemed to survive. A couple of good shots near the end of the day were not fully useful because of a cPCI problem with some of Brian's digitizers; Josh resurrected these, but ended up having to reboot pcdaqeng1 in the process. The last shot (#29) was a five o'clock fizzle, taken at 17:03. See the SL_SUMMARY for more on the run results. While the strkpsi error seemed pretty constant, EFIT was showing some motion of the strikepoint. Toward the end of the run I experimented with an observer (no gain, zero controller) on wire 10 with the reference point changed from the STRKPSI default of (.62,-.52) to (.615,-.49), near the desired strikepoint, and a zero target waveform. NOTE: To avoid having the wires linked I used a STRKIN observer name for wire 10; I almost screwed up on shot#20 by trying to add a second STRKPSI, but there was an EF3 fault that caused a dud anyway. Using a reference point at the desired target and a zero waveform should be preferable to drawing a non-zero target, because the mapping from flux space to strikepoint location depends on the field and flux expansion, which is not constant during the shot and will also vary with equilibrium. The behavior of the wire 10 observer on shots#26-28 seems to confirm that this technique should work. I also recommend use of intergral gain to get rid of the finite error from PD gain, which on these shots seems to be over 1000A-m. However, since we were in the middle of a scan and Brian was satisfied with the performance I did not attempt to change to this feedback scheme. Adding lots of pg3, up to 100V for tens of msec, in seg1 seemed to help get rid of the runaways, although they reappeared on one shot#25. The startup didn't seem quite as robust after the various tweaking to get rid of the hards, but it wasn't bad. Jul 16 2009 08:14:13:700AM		Steve Wolfe	Pre-run prep for Thursday, July 16, 2009 MP#557: Commisioning of new divertor heat flux diagnostics SL: LaBombard PO: wolfe We'll be starting from the conditions of 1090715035 nl04 = 8e19, strkpsi at -.0007, which had the hot spot on the third tile from the bottom. PCS setup: Load from 1090715035. Note that 36 fizzled, so I may want to tweak the startup a little. Ian was fighting runaways much of the day yesterday, but the last fizzle looked like it went in, so there are contradictory indicators for which way to tweak the gas. Seg 1 settings are: pg4=19msec RCUR offset=2000 Br_0 offset=+.0007 IC_EF4U=-1300. PG3 has max of 30V from .02 to .032, then down; I can push that up Note that Ian had moved the EF1 crowbar from 0.2 to 0.15sec to promote early xpoint formation; I'll leave that. I'm noticing that the EF2 voltage demands are going over 800V between .02 and .04 sec, which the supply can't seem to follow. The feedforward is below this, so it must be coming from rcur feedback? No, it seems to actually be EF2U/L current control. I wonder if this is contributing to the big Br thrash; we got another startup vde on shot#29 yesterday. The EF2's may be getting some unbalanced windup from the integral voltage feedback. The EF2 current program calls for them to drop it -1467@.039sec, then go back up to -2000@.063 sec, but they actually only reach about -1900A around 40ms. I think I'll try changing that .039sec point to -1900, once I get a shot going. For now, I'm going to raise BR_0 from .0007 to .001 and leave it the rest of seg1 alone. Seg2: Ian ended up running P=D=6, I=0 on STRKPSI, this seems to be holding pretty constant error <1000A-m. The target is -.0007. The other values used yesterday were 0.000(#3-14); -.0001 (#16-17); -.00015 (#18-27); -.0007 (#28-36). The key to controlling the angle of the leg for lower strike point seems to be the ramp in RXL from 0 to -.02. Leave all of this for now, since Brian was happy with the positioning, although we could probably get the error down if I turned on integral gain; note that 700A-m at 800kA is of the same order as the target value of 0.7mm (all of which are too small to really measure, but the flux expansion makes the effect on the plate ten times bigger).

Seems to have happened after the disruption, so what caused the disruption. Dies just after 0.3sec, No the fault seems to have happened before the disruption at .229 seconds. Both EF1U and EF1L are going high, but EF1L is railing at -7.2kA and the EF2's are going to zero. This shot is out of control. The supplies stop responding to DPCS and go to forced invert at about .26sec, resulting in the disruption. Before that, the EF1L has been below -7kA since .25sec. It didn't do that on 1090715035. The EF2's start ramping down hard at .2sec, at a gain switch. At the same time the EF1's take a step in opposite directions. That seems to be the strkpsi turn on and ZXL step down. Note that there is no step in EF1 voltage at the new crowbar time of .15sec, but there is still one at 0.2sec. There is also a step down in EF4 voltage at 0.2 sec.

Hards are saturated for the duration of the shot (.38sec) This one came close to a oh force fault, but didn't trip. Disruption is during crossover. Lost a BP05_DE (used in processed, not in control). Bob will zap. Next: Go to a more standard shot until we get one to run through. Then we can go back to the strkpsi

Runaways are gone, slight hesitation in startup The wire10 physaout error is pretty flat at -250 to -800a-m almost but not quite parallel to the strkpsi error, which tends to get more postive during the pulse. I think that this means a specifying the reference point is better than drawing a non-zero target. This actually makes sense because the flux expansion is going to vary some with the equilibrium. Of course it's too late to re-do this now, but I think the right way is to change the ref point and use integral gain. Next: nl04=0.8e20

Right now, just modify the node SPECT_ACT in the model tree to previous value before changed from this shot. Shots before #3 today will not be affected. shot 4 has been refitted.
