Establish standard discharge at 5.4 T, IP =1 MA, nl04~0.8, right gap ~1.0 cm, elongation ~1.6, upper and lower triangularity 0.55 and 0.3 respectively (similar to 1090714023). Switch to He and develop a similar standard discharge. 1. Plasma current scan [0.6-1.2 MA] with constant BT and density. (6 shots) 2. Scan BT [5 -6 T] with constant Ip and density. (6 shots) 3. Scan density nl04~0.5-1.1 x1020 m-2 (6-8 shots) 4. Repeat current scan at 0.6 and 1.0 x 1020 m-2. (12 shots) 5. Outer gap scan [0.5, 1, 1.5, 2] cm (6 shots) RF waveform will be a stair case to 1.5 MW with some additional discharges with overlapped RF.

Power systems as on 1090714023 (Bt=5.4T, Ip=0.9 MA, nl04=0.9-1e20 m-2) A-coil configuration: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot; Enabled (standard configuration) Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) leave NINJA as is DISABLED Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, Z-bolo Torvac setup: keep gate valves open during PULSE Specific diagnostics: magnetics, ECE, TCI ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ICRF Setup: conditioning of D & E LH Setup: no DNB: no Cryopump: no ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run plan: We will try to control the plasma bounday so that it has fewer interactions with the inboard wall early in the shot, with the goal being to keep the density at a constant value throughout the shot.

We developed a standard 1 MA discharge with nl04~0.8 and good shape. The RF power was successfully stepped from 0.5 MW to 0.9 MW to 1.3 MW. The B-dot amplitude was highest with D antenna for 0.8 MA - 1.2 MA and the floating potential responded most strongly with D antenna over the same current range. At 0.6 MA, the B-dot and katsumata respond to both D and E antennas. Although with signficant fluctuations, the B-dot amplitude on some discharges scaled with the power. A couple of puzzling observations include modulation of the B-dot signal with sawteeth (002, 029,030) and H-mode dithers (026, 029, 030). We completed current scans at nl04~0.7 and 0.5 but ran out of time to do BT scan and He.

Physics operator summary for run 1090717 We worked on MP558 - Characterization of RF sheaths during ICRF. This involved developing a good 1 MA, 5.4 T, 0.8e20 m-2 SNL discharge as a target. The D and E antennas ran well on most shots throughout the day. Next, we varied Ip, obtaining good discharges at 1.2 MA, 0.8 MA, and 0.6 MA, in addition to the initial 1.0 MA cases. We also ran a lower density case (nl_04=0.6e20 m-2) at several currents. So the run was reasonable successful, in spite of two shots that had problems with EF1 commutation, and some shots with lots of hard x-rays even though I was using Steve Wolfe's PG3 early programming. I also tickled a sort of bug in PCS, which actually was traced to the fact that my .bashrc file was not executing the global .bashrc file. (Apparently I'm the only person on the planet that wasn't doing that.) Steve Wukitch reported some interesting data from the RF bdot probes.
