| 1. Using standard discharge developed Friday (1090722007 or 1090717029 is a good
example except nl04 needs to be increased from 0.6 to 0.7), we will begin J antenna operation. We will run J separate from D and E antennas and begin with low power pulses. After evaluating the state of J antenna from an operational standpoint, we will seek to increase the power to 2 MW. 2. Discharge target is 1 MA, 5.4 T with moderate shaping and 1 cm outer gap. If time permits we will change plasma current and density to condition the antenna and other surfaces. |

| We had a number of difficulties but made progress on correcting a few of them. PG3 was tested and found to be faulty but was corrected and installed on #010. An alternator vibration fault was indicated on shots#003-6. These were warnings from the housing (located above coupling of alternator to flywheel) vibration monitor and this warning level was raised. We had a few J conditioning pulses before a PLC issue caused FMIT#3 to go to run-off mid pulse. This eventually caused us to scrub the run. |

| A lot of problems today:
1. The main gas valve's pulse width modulator did not work at the beginning of the run. The problem was found to be one or more bad connections in a PCB. These were repaired by Bill Burke and normal feedback control of the plasma density became possible beginning with shot 12. 2. There was a failure of the UPS in the power room. It was reset and the problem did not recur. 3. PLC control of the alternator was lost. The problem was fixed and did not recur. 4. High levels of vibration occurred in the housing near the coupling in the alternator. This caused several aborted shots, since the vibrations increased to the alarm level when the alternator was excited. The problem was fixed by inserting a wedge between the alternator bearing supports and the coupling housing (see Power Systems). 5. A ground fault indication came up from the power room. Upon inspection, no fault current was detected and the ground fault indication did not recur. 6. The was a data system failure, which was quickly resolved and did not recur. 7. Finally, there was a failure of an RF PLC. This occurred around 3:00 and after trouble shooting it was determined that it was not fixable in the remaining run time -- thus the run was terminated at 4:15. In spite of all of these problems, the machine ran well when it was possible to run plasma shots. Scorecard: 16 shot count downs, 10 aborted due to above technical problems, 6 powered plasma attempts. All plasmas started up well, 5 went full length (including long ramp-downs), one disrupted at 1.23 s |

| Jul 23 2009 09:01:16:393AM | 1090723001 | Ron Parker | Run will be delayed this morning due to problems with PG 3. The first shot was a no power shot to test the valve which had been "fixed" last night. However, PG 3 did not open so Willy and Steve are trouble shooting.
|
| Jul 23 2009 09:12:32:393AM | 1090723002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 was a PG 3 test -- problem has not been fixed so we'll have to run without density feedback.
|
| Jul 23 2009 09:23:04:640AM | 1090723002 | Ron Parker | New problem, UPS in power room has failed. Entry into power room. |
| Jul 23 2009 09:56:15:610AM | 1090723003 | Ron Parker | Attempt for plasma on shot 3 was aborted due to flashing red indication from alternator. This was followed by a no power shot. |
| Jul 23 2009 10:16:32:330AM | 1090723004 | Ron Parker | Setting up for a shot, which may or may not go through. |
| Jul 23 2009 10:18:59:610AM | 1090723004 | Ron Parker | Shot was aborted, followed by no power shot. |
| Jul 23 2009 10:26:08:190AM | 1090723004 | Ron Parker | Now we've lost PLC control of the alternator -- time to ask what else can go wrong today, but that would be tempting fate. |
| Jul 23 2009 10:31:55:877AM | 1090723004 | Ron Parker | Trying again for plasma on shot 5. |
| Jul 23 2009 10:35:15:127AM | 1090723005 | Ron Parker | No shot again. No power shot coming up. |
| Jul 23 2009 10:48:24:860AM | 1090723006 | Ron Parker | trying again.... |
| Jul 23 2009 11:00:59:470AM | 1090723006 | Ron Parker | Shot didn't go -- no power shot
Problem is alternator vibration indication inhibits shot. |
| Jul 23 2009 11:17:01:080AM | 1090723006 | Ron Parker | Try again, for real! |
| Jul 23 2009 11:46:34:767AM | 1090723007 | Ron Parker | Wunderbar! Ein schoen guter schuss! |
| Jul 23 2009 11:38:12:813AM | 1090723008 | Ron Parker | Another good shot, we're on a roll
Power room access for ICRF. |
| Jul 23 2009 12:05:50:657PM | 1090723009 | Ron Parker | A fault came up from power room (TF fast ground fault), so there's a power room entry.
Meanwhile, Bill Burke believes that the pulse width modulation board for PG3 is fixed, so there is a cell entry to insert it. We'll have to have a no-power shot to test it. |
| Jul 23 2009 12:09:41:923PM | 1090723009 | Ron Parker | No current indicated in TF ground fault, so we'll proceed with shots after the test of the PG systems. |
| Jul 23 2009 12:16:54:330PM | 1090723010 | Ron Parker | Success with PG 3 (B-side main). We'll proceed with plasma shots. |
| Jul 23 2009 12:24:02:407PM | 1090723010 | Ron Parker | Gas feedback = 8, derivative gain = 3 for entire shot |
| Jul 23 2009 12:26:33:877PM | 1090723011 | Ron Parker | Shot aborted due to data system failure. This will become a no power shot
|
| Jul 23 2009 12:53:57:227PM | 1090723012 | Ron Parker | Shot 12 ran well. Density nL04 ran up to 0.8e20 but was programmed for 0.7e20.
|
| Jul 23 2009 01:04:44:337PM | 1090723013 | Ron Parker | Shot 13 aborted due to alternator problem. This will be followed by a no-power shot. |
| Jul 23 2009 01:18:27:200PM | 1090723013 | Ron Parker | There is a delay while the vibration problem is being looked into. |
| Jul 23 2009 01:29:12:870PM | 1090723014 | Ron Parker | Shot 14 ran well. |
| Jul 23 2009 02:09:57:230PM | 1090723015 | Ron Parker | Shot 15 ran well. |
| Jul 23 2009 03:19:04:230PM | 1090723016 | Ron Parker | Shot 16 started up well, but disrupted at 1.23 s.
Problems now with RF PLC, causing another delay. |
| Jul 23 2009 04:14:36:717PM | 1090723016 | Ron Parker | Unfortunately, the RF PLC problem cannot be fixed before the scheduled end of the run. Therefore the run will terminate. |
