| Repeat of 1090728 without J PLC issues:
1. Using standard discharge (1090728010 LSN), we will resume J antenna operation. We will run J separate from D and E antennas and begin with low power pulses. After evaluating the state of J antenna from an operational standpoint, we will seek to increase the power to 2 MW. 2. Discharge target is 1 MA, 5.4 T with moderate shaping and 1 cm outer gap. If time permits we will change plasma current and density to condition the antenna and other surfaces. 3. If needed we will switch to USN, like 1090728029, in deuterium with nl04~0.8 4. If needed, we will also switch to He. |

| We had more problems with J antenna control system. First we
completely by-passed the PLC remote control in J3. However, the J4 gate board was intermittant after about 009 and we finally (after a number of false starts) replaced the voltage regulator and drivers chips for 025. J antenna ran to 2 MW relatively well for 029 and 030. Hopefully this means we have solved this problem. |

| The machine ran reasonably well today. After 2 disruptions (1 MA), we started having some fizzles. We also had two shots (6 and 28), that got to >150 kA and then died. Shot 6 appeared to have a vertical problem. Shot 28 did not, but had runaways coming up strongly.
Shot 14 got to 100 kA before dying, with a vertical problem. Shot 10 had a density feedback problem, as the TCI gatevalves were closed during the shot. The result was a relatively high (but unknown) density plasma. H/(H+D) for this shot was the lowest of the day, around 8% during the flattop. H/(H+D) was about 9% on shot 1, rising to around 15% on most of the other shots. Runaways were an increasing problem as the run progressed. Starting with shot 15, we changed the asynchronous fizzle programming, to increase the target currents for OH2L and OH2U following a fizzle. The new target is 20 kA. After fizzles, this gives about 17.5 kA. This may have helped with the OH2L coax resistance following fizzles. We also implemented delayed fizzle, OH invert and TF rampdown, to get a stronger swing in the OH2's following full length shots. There was no apparent improvement in coax resistance, and the TF heating caused a slow down in the shot cycle. These changes were reversed starting with shot 22 (which turned out to be a fizzle). *****PHYSOP WARNING************************************ If you load from 1090729015 or 1090729016, you will get programming for dpcs_fizzle in segment 4 of the current shot, instead of from an old shot. This can be dangerous, if changes to segment 4 are subsequently made. Also, any loading of shots prior to 1090729014 will cause the dpcs_fizzle to revert to the previous OH2 current programming, which may not be optimum for the coax resistances. ************************************************** Scorecard: Shot,Duration(s),Ipmax(MA),Result Shot,Duration(s),Ipmax,Result | 01 1.964 1.014 Plasma | 02 1.967 1.012 Plasma | | 03 1.965 1.011 Plasma | 04 1.967 1.010 Plasma | | 05 1.968 1.016 Plasma | 06 0.036 0.164 Plasma | | 07 1.968 1.016 Plasma | 08 1.967 1.021 Plasma | | 09 1.331 1.015 Plasma | 10 1.461 1.006 Plasma | | 11 0.000 0.057 Fizzle | 12 0.000 0.054 Fizzle | | 13 1.969 1.015 Plasma | 14 0.027 0.101 Plasma | | 15 1.996 1.017 Plasma | 16 1.998 1.019 Plasma | | 17 0.000 0.052 Fizzle | 18 1.973 1.017 Plasma | | 19 1.990 1.022 Plasma | 20 1.997 1.024 Plasma | | 21 1.981 1.012 Plasma | 22 0.000 0.054 Fizzle | | 23 1.969 1.020 Plasma | 24 1.971 1.023 Plasma | | 25 0.000 0.050 Fizzle | 26 1.968 1.012 Plasma | | 27 1.970 1.014 Plasma | 28 0.032 0.167 Plasma | | 29 1.966 1.016 Plasma | 30 1.967 1.015 Plasma | Date 1090729: 30 shots. 25 plasmas. 5 fizzles. 0 duds. 0 System Error. Approx sequence of events (physops should read Steve's email): programming from 1060308026 seg 4 was loaded into seg 4. OH2U and OH2L waveforms were modified to go to +20 kA wires 1-7 were zeroed (zero all) build segment button pushed (not certain this step was needed) sync goes to async off goes to on loaded --- open tree done Note that TF PLC delay is 600 ms, and OH1 and OH2 PLC delays are 600 ms If this programming looks better we will change the reference shot. plasma into rampdown change in fizzle programming successfully increased OH2 current. |
