| 1. Start with discharge (1090729030 LSN with nl04~0.5), we will begin
with CNPA calibration/settings with constant RF pulses. We need to stay out of H-mode so the density may need adjustment. Run the 3 antennas separate to start and will stack as necessary. A power scan will be done to optimize signal. 2. Once conditions are identified, switch the RF to pulsed waveforms similar to 1080408025. Obtain several shots at each plasma current. 3. If needed or if time permits, we will also switch to He. |

| Very good run, with excellent work from the RF team and the physop.
Shots 1-5: calibrated the CNPA aperture to the ICRF signal, eventually settled on an aperture setting of 202 and an ICRF signal of 1.25 MW from J. Shots 6-23: Run Pulsed ICRF starting at 30 ms pulses and eventually switching to 40 ms pulses. Calculated the fast-ion decay vs current and found a negligible current dependence. Fast-ion decay fairly rock solid at tau = 0.011 - 0.013 s for all 3 channels. Rise time looks to be on a very similar time scale. Shots 24-30: Ran helium plasmas, only got a couple shots in, had some problems with D contamination. Again did not see a difference between decay time in helium to decay time in Deuterium. However, we did see a strong dependence on density, based on the one shot we had at a higher density. Channel 3 started to receive much lower signals than channels 1 or 2 during some of the helium shots, although the decay time constants look to be the same. This was not the case in Deuterium, and I do not understand this behavior. |

Run summary for Thursday 2009/07/30
MP562 - Characterization of the decay time of the fast ion tail
Session leaders: A. Bader
Physics operator: R. Granetz
The goal for today was to gather data with the 3 CNPA detectors at F-port
at various plasma currents, densities, and species (D and He) with
modulated RF to study the decal time of the fast ion tail. The run was
very successful in achieving the goal because both the machine and the RF
worked well. We ran currents of 1.0, 0.8, and 0.6 MA in deuterium, and 1.0
and 0.8 MA in helium. We stayed mostly at low density (nl_04=0.5e20 m-2)
in order to stay out of H-mode. Most of the shots used J-port only, with
an on/off modulation period of 30 ms/30 ms initially, eventually changing
to 40 ms/40 ms. The helium changeover took a few shots to unload the walls
of deuterium. The only problem of note today was a mysterious PLC issue in
the alternator house that caused a problem with several shot cycles early
in the afternoon, but which eventually was resolved.
Scorecard: 25 plasmas
0 duds
2 fizzles
0 power supply tests
3 no-power MDS shot cycles

Total: 30 shot cycles

| Jul 30 2009 09:20:44:167AM | 1090730001 | Aaron Bader | Shot good. Density is a little high, but should come down.
CNPA signal noise level looks good, but not as many pulses as desired, need to open the aperture. Set aperture to 202. Oddly, no signal when J is on, unclear why, but we've seen this before. Next shot: Lower J-port RF to 1 MW total, and move D and E a bit earlier. |
| Jul 30 2009 09:32:39:897AM | 1090730002 | Aaron Bader | Shot good, RF looks very nice.
CNPA signal is good, but count levels are still too low, see if we can get density down a bit, if not, we'll have to open the aperture even more. Next shot: Same from RF, try lowering the density a little. |
| Jul 30 2009 09:44:52:350AM | 1090730003 | Aaron Bader | Shot good, RF very nice again, density is a little lower
CNPA count rate is close to ideal. Noise still acceptable. Opened the aperture up to 200 trying to reach the 5000 count per second level Next shot: Same from RF, keep density the same. |
| Jul 30 2009 09:54:05:200AM | 1090730004 | Aaron Bader | Shot disrupted.
Noise level on CNPA is too high at the beginning of the pulse, we may need to close the aperture back to 202. Next shot - try again, no changes. |
| Jul 30 2009 10:10:18:183AM | 1090730005 | Aaron Bader | Good plasma and RF
CNPA noise is a little high, so are the soft x-rays. Next shot: try running with modulated RF, J Antenna only. |
| Jul 30 2009 10:30:00:963AM | 1090730006 | Aaron Bader | Good plasma, RF modulation looks good
Soft x-rays too high though, reduce the aperture back to 202 Next shot: same |
| Jul 30 2009 10:42:36:370AM | 1090730007 | Aaron Bader | Good plasma, RF modulation looks very good
Aperture is set back to 202 but I think we have enough signal to be able to get the decay tail timing. We will add a couple more RF pulses for the next shot. Also need to add some pre-puff to prevent the hard x-rays. Same otherwise. |
| Jul 30 2009 11:03:21:413AM | 1090730008 | Aaron Bader | Good shot.
Next shot: repeat |
| Jul 30 2009 11:14:44:737AM | 1090730009 | Aaron Bader | Another good shot.
Next shot: second point in current scan. Change current to 0.8 MA |
| Jul 30 2009 11:30:12:717AM | 1090730010 | Aaron Bader | Another good shot.
Change in decay time due to different currents not clear. Next shot: repeat |
| Jul 30 2009 11:34:58:377AM | 1090730011 | Aaron Bader | fizzle
Next shot: try again |
| Jul 30 2009 11:54:14:923AM | 1090730012 | Aaron Bader | Good shot
Next shot: one more at this current |
| Jul 30 2009 12:04:31:120PM | 1090730013 | Aaron Bader | Fizzle
Next shot: try again at this current |
| Jul 30 2009 12:21:16:663PM | 1090730014 | Aaron Bader | Good shot
Next shot: move current to 0.6 MA |
| Jul 30 2009 12:44:53:620PM | 1090730015 | Aaron Bader | Good shot
We're not sure that we're seeing the fast ion signal level off during the 30 ms RF pulse. so Next shot: increase the width of the RF pulse to 40 ms on and 40 ms off |
| Jul 30 2009 01:21:59:553PM | 1090730016 | Aaron Bader | Good shot
With the extended RF pulse we clearly hit the flattop on the fast-ion signal. Next shot: Another shot like this |
| Jul 30 2009 01:22:40:117PM | 1090730017 | Aaron Bader | Good shot
Next shot: Want to return and get data at 0.8 MA with RF at 40 ms on and 40 ms off. So next shot, raise current to 0.8 MA |
| Jul 30 2009 01:36:44:893PM | 1090730018 | Aaron Bader | hmm, that didn't work so well. Shot cycle error.
Next shot: try again. |
| Jul 30 2009 02:02:17:067PM | 1090730019 | Aaron Bader | no power shot.
next shot: hopefully a plasma shot at 0.8 MA |
| Jul 30 2009 02:34:00:140PM | 1090730020 | Aaron Bader | no power shot again.
next shot: hopefully a plasma shot at 0.8 MA |
| Jul 30 2009 03:06:29:510PM | 1090730021 | Aaron Bader | Plasma shot, looks good
Trigger on CNPA went off early for some unknown reason next shot: retry |
| Jul 30 2009 03:18:52:713PM | 1090730022 | Aaron Bader | Plasma shot, looks good
trigger seems to be correct. Looks like we had a bizarre false trigger. Next shot: 1 MA |
| Jul 30 2009 03:52:10:660PM | 1090730023 | Aaron Bader | Plasma shot, looks good
Next shot: helium |
| Jul 30 2009 03:52:36:940PM | 1090730024 | Aaron Bader | Plasma shot, looks good
Problem with D contamination of the plasma Next shot: raise density, try again. |
| Jul 30 2009 04:06:19:360PM | 1090730025 | Aaron Bader | Plasma shot, disrupted, huge marfe.
Density too high for good CNPA data. Next shot: try to get 0.8 |
| Jul 30 2009 04:13:03:550PM | 1090730026 | Aaron Bader | fizzle, shake tiny fist at Matt
next shot: try again. |
| Jul 30 2009 04:36:37:197PM | 1090730027 | Aaron Bader | good shot. CNPA has data, have enough for a decay time measurement.
Decay time looks different, about twice as fast than in shot 23 in deuterium. Don't know if it's a helium effect or a density effect. Channel 3 has different signal level and different decay time. There has been no channel difference between Next shot: try to lower the density |
| Jul 30 2009 04:46:12:060PM | 1090730028 | Aaron Bader | good shot.
decay constants back up to deuterium levels Next shot: try again. |
| Jul 30 2009 05:03:45:387PM | 1090730029 | Aaron Bader | Good shot
Channel 3 low again Next shot: lower current to 0.8 MA. |

| Jul 30 2009 08:55:30:740AM | Robert Granetz | Shot 01 -- setup by loading 1090729030 and decreasing nl_04 to 0.5e20 m-2. | |
| Jul 30 2009 09:18:25:617AM | 1090730001 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 01 -- Plasma, full length. Lots of hard x-rays. nl_04 = 0.6e20 m-2. D, E, and J each gave
about a megawatt, but J was tripped a few times. All three CNPA signals "look good"
(according to Aaron).
Quick cell access required by Aaron to change aperture.
Next shot: repeat, no DPCS changes.
|
| Jul 30 2009 09:31:14:587AM | 1090730002 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 02 -- Plasma, full length. Very nice ICRF performance. J, E, & D each gave 1.0 MW, fault-free for
0.25 s each. So far they are not being overlapped in time. Plenty of hard x-rays. L/H dithering
after t=1.15 s.
Next shot: decrease nl_04 to 0.35e20 m-2
|
| Jul 30 2009 09:45:09:303AM | 1090730003 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 03 -- Plasma, full length. More beautiful RF performance. Huge hard x-ray signal.
Density stayed lower on this shot. No L/H dithering.
OH2L coax at 3.0 micro-ohms.
Next shot: Move fizzle off time to 2.1 s (from 1.8), OH invert times to 2.3 s (from 2.0), and program
I_TF flattop to extend to 2.0 s (was 1.5 s). Also increase pre-fill by 1 ms.
|
| Jul 30 2009 10:01:39:300AM | 1090730004 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 04 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.82 s. Not due to an injection. Sawteeth disappear, so maybe this
was due to a locked mode, even though the A-coil feedback is on. Maybe we need to run Steve
Wolfe's error field MP soon. Huge hard x-ray signal. J-port ran fault free at 1.2 MW.
Density stayed very low, which may be why this may have had a locked mode.
Next shot: increase nl_04 to 0.4e20 m-2
|
| Jul 30 2009 10:10:14:993AM | 1090730005 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 05 -- Plasma, full length. Very good RF. Hard x-rays are nearly gone until late in the rampdown when
the density gets very low. No L/H dithering, so this is a pretty good shot.
Next shot: modulate J (30 ms on, 30 ms off); increase density late in the shot; increase pre-fill by 1 ms.
|
| Jul 30 2009 10:27:42:913AM | 1090730006 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 06 -- Plasma, full length. J-port ICRF is modulated at 30 ms on, 30 ms off. D & E were not run.
Nice RF performance. Density is low (0.4e20 m-2) and very constant. Really huge hard x-ray
signal...good thing it doesn't affect Aaron's CNPAs.
Next shot: repeat, no changes except CNPA aperture is reduced
|
| Jul 30 2009 10:43:36:307AM | 1090730007 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 07 -- Plasma, full length. Good modulated J-port RF. Good steady, low density. Huge hard -xray
signal.
We have extended the RECOOL time to 12 minutes because of the extended TF pulse.
Next shot: increase pre-fill by 2 ms
|
| Jul 30 2009 10:54:33:533AM | 1090730008 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 08 -- Plasma, full length. The J-port RF modulation is a thing of beauty. Good density. Plenty
of hard x-rays. Good CNPA signals.
Next shot: repeat this 1 MA shot one more time; add 1 ms to pre-fill
|
| Jul 30 2009 11:09:34:123AM | 1090730009 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 09 -- Plasma, full length. 1 MA. Good J-port modulated RF. Good density. Good CNPA signals.
Bad hard x-rays. Oh well, you can't win them all.
Next shot: Reduce Ip to 0.8 MA; increase pre-fill another 1 ms
|
| Jul 30 2009 11:29:50:827AM | 1090730010 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 10 -- Plasma, full length. Good modulated RF, good density, good CNPA. Bad hard x-rays, but less
than most of the shots we've been having. We notice again that the RF modulation also has
a modulation effect on the hard x-rays...how?
Next shot: repeat; increase pre-fill by another 1 ms; turn on argon valve, and setup
a 50 ms argon puff starting at t=1.3 s.
|
| Jul 30 2009 11:39:48:007AM | 1090730011 | Robert Granetz | Shot 11 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 1 ms |
| Jul 30 2009 11:59:58:460AM | 1090730012 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 12 -- Plasma, full length. Good modulated J-port RF, good density, good CNPA signals. Hard x-rays
are bad, but not as bad as they have been.
Next shot: repeat, no changes
|
| Jul 30 2009 12:08:57:653PM | 1090730013 | Robert Granetz | Shot 13 -- Fizzle. Next shot: reduce pre-fill another 1 ms |
| Jul 30 2009 12:25:08:667PM | 1090730014 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 14 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA. Good modulated J-port RF, good density, good CNPA. Better hard
x-rays.
Next shot: reduce Ip to 0.6 MA
|
| Jul 30 2009 12:47:46:043PM | 1090730015 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 15 -- Plasma, full length. 0.6 MA. Good modulated J-port RF, good density, good CNPA. Less hard
x-rays.
Next shot: no DPCS changes; J-port RF modulation will be changed to 40 ms on, 40 ms off
|
| Jul 30 2009 01:16:03:470PM | 1090730016 | Robert Granetz | Shot 16 -- Plasma, full length. 0.6 MA. RF modulation is now 40 ms on, 40 ms off. Next shot: change BR_0 offset to +0.5 mT (from +1.0 mT) |
| Jul 30 2009 01:24:09:663PM | 1090730017 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 17 -- Plasma, full length. 0.6 MA. Good modulated J-port RF, good density, good CNPA, and even
low hard x-rays.
Next shot: set Ip to 0.8 MA (with the 40/40 ms RF modulation)
|
| Jul 30 2009 02:03:34:090PM | 1090730018 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 18 -- ??? I think we had a shot cycle, but nothing happened. The alternator stopped everything for
some reason.
Next shot: no-power shot to check data cycle
|
| Jul 30 2009 02:29:07:230PM | 1090730019 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 19 -- No power shot to confirm that data cycle problems have been solved.
Looks like there's still a problem with a PLC in the alternator house.
Next shot: looks like we'll need another no-power test cycle
|
| Jul 30 2009 02:59:14:440PM | 1090730020 | Robert Granetz | Shot 20 -- no-power test shot. NOT successful. Next shot: go for 0.8 MA plasma |
| Jul 30 2009 03:06:35:477PM | 1090730021 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 21 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA. Good modulated J-port RF, good density, good CNPA, good hard x-rays.
Looks like the CNPA triggered about a half-second earlier than it should
have. We'll have to redo this shot.
Next shot: repeat with no changes
|
| Jul 30 2009 03:15:04:227PM | 1090730022 | Robert Granetz | Shot 22 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA. Good modulated J-port RF, good density, good CNPA, good hard x-rays. Next shot: set Ip to 1.0 MA (copy wire from shot 09) |
| Jul 30 2009 03:28:16:377PM | 1090730023 | Robert Granetz | Shot 23 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA. Good modulated J-port RF, good density, good CNPA, good hard x-rays. Next shot: change to helium plasmas (breakdown in D2) |
| Jul 30 2009 03:56:07:727PM | 1090730024 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 24 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA. This was supposed to be a helium plasma, but only a small amount of
helium was actually puffed because we're running as such a low density. Good modulated J-port RF,
good CNPA, good hard x-ray signal.
Next shot: increase nl_04 to 0.8e20 m-2 (from 0.4) in order to get more helium puffed in. Also decrease PG3
programming in seg 1 to reduce early marfe. Also increase B-side-lower N2 puff from 50 ms to 100 ms
(starting at t=1.3 s)
|
| Jul 30 2009 04:09:26:940PM | 1090730025 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 25 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.51 s. Huge marfe from t=0.36 to 0.8 s. Density is too high even
after the marfe goes away. Neutron rate is greatly reduced, so maybe we're actually getting
more of a helium plasma. Pretty good RF.
Next shot: reduce nl_04 gain from 8.0 to 2.0. Reduce late N2 puff to 60 ms (from 100 ms).
|
| Jul 30 2009 04:16:41:617PM | 1090730026 | Robert Granetz | Shot 26 -- Fizzle. Disruption recovery in helium? Next shot: try again, no changes |
| Jul 30 2009 04:30:29:300PM | 1090730027 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 27 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA. Looks like helium! Neutrons are down by an order of magnitude.
Density is under control, at nl_04=0.8e20 m-2. Good modulated J-port RF, good hard x-rays,
good CNPA.
Next shot: decrease nl_04 to 0.5e20 m-2
|
| Jul 30 2009 04:44:49:623PM | 1090730028 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 28 -- Plasma, full length. Helium plasma, 1.0 MA, nl_04=0.5e20 m-2. Good modulated J-port RF, good
CNPA. Hard x-rays have come back.
Next shot: repeat, no changes
|
| Jul 30 2009 05:00:26:883PM | 1090730029 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 29 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, nl_04=0.5e20 m-2, helium. Huge hard x-ray signal.
Good modulated J-port RF. Good CNPA.
Next shot: set Ip to 0.8 MA
|
| Jul 30 2009 05:07:57:437PM | 1090730030 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 30 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, nl_04=0.5e20 m-2, helium. Good modulated J-port RF, good CNPA.
Really huge hard x-ray signal.
End of run. To be continued tomorrow...
