| Establish standard discharge at 5.4 T, IP =1 MA, nl04~1, right gap ~1.0 cm, elongation ~1.6, upper and lower triangularity 0.3 and 0.55 respectively (similar to 1090805001) where a steady EDA is obtained.
Run the ICRF power at 3 MW from 0.7 to 1.1 sec and increase to 4 MW from 1.1 to 1.5 sec. If plasma performance is maintained in excess of 50 MJ (30 discharges) increase RF power 5 MW. Monitor stored energy, H89, Prad, and Mo. |

| It was an ugly day. The plasma confinement was poor all day and the
tungsten injections were plasma killers. If the H/H+D was not reduced to 5% level one would have had difficulty knowing that the machine had been boronized. We found that with the strike point on the upper half the tungsten tile resulted in better plasmas while below that resulted in early disruptions. D antenna could use some vacuum conditioning. |

We got started at around 11:00AM. The boronization to 120psi
drop in the bottle pressure took until about 7:00, and we took
an hour for J-port conditioning between the He ECDC and half an
hour of D2 ECDC before starting up.
The plan was to get the rf and plasma going and get good performance
EDA H-modes, then see how long it took for performance to degrade.
However, we never really got the good performance EDA's at all.
The major problem seemed to be injestion of tungsten whenever we ran
high power onto LSN discharges, leading to disruptions on a high fraction of shots. It seems likely that we have exposed a leading edge
on the row of tungsten tiles, and/or splattered some W someplace else
that is getting hit by the strike point. We tried moving the strike point up
and down, but still were getting W in on most shots. Best location
was probably on #25, with zxl at +.015, which put the strike point
at or above the third tile from the bottom (which is the W row). Lower
strikes seemed to be worse, although Matt was seeing the WI line
higher up in his view.
At nl04 of 9e19 and higher we had some EDA behavior, including
QC mode on reflectometry and normal H-alpha signatures, but the Prad
still increased linearly through the RF until the H-mode collapsed.
We never got a decent steady h-mode.
Running upper null (shots 16-20) got rid of the W problem, but still
had Mo radiation and no real EDA's. The radiated power rose rapidly
in the h-modes.
Aside from the W problem, there is additional circumstantial evidence
that this boronization was not effective. The CIII light at breakdown
is essentially the same as it has been for weeks, rather than dropping
to near invisibility as is typical. The runaways were bad much of the
day, even at high fill pressures and high density, which is not typical
of post-boronization. The H/D did come down, as low as 2% at the start
of the day, but over the course of the run came back up to ~8%.
The best stored energies were in the range of 150-160kJ, with up to 4MW
of RF, in the upper null shots. The lower nulls got to just under
150kJ. Confinement was not very good.
Startup was reasonably robust for post-boronization, with only four
fizzles all of which followed disruptions. However, we did have some
marfing, and lots of injections, large and small, as well as a lot
of runaways. At least four shots disrupted before the RF, including
one killer runaway shot#9. I made lots of gas tweaks, and also
increased RCUR offset and raised Bz (IC_EF4U more positive).

H-mode looks like eda until it crashes, still looks like W. Getting glitches on the EF1U voltage again, just after 0.7sec injection happens at 0.8sec. Next: repeat the discharge, separate the RF |
| Aug 11 2009 04:59:26:807PM | 1090811028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: repeat the discharge, separate the RF plasma to 0.9sec, hards went away. Two h-modes neither very eda-ish. RF very ratty, both D and E, didn't make it to J. END OF RUN. |
