| This goal of this MP was to characterize the SOL turbulence
using GPI along with SOL width measurements from the scanning and divertor Langmuir probes and the IRTV. The run was quite successful with at least 17 good shots with both GPI systems running at their highest available speed, with at least one scanning probe shot for each condition, and with the divertor probes and IRTV on nearly every shot. See logbook entries in "spectroscopy" by "terry" for the shot by shot commentary. The run started with D2 plasmas with D2 GPI puffs, and then switched to Helium plasmas near the end of the run. All shots were LSN Ohmic. shots 1-3 tested the background levels in the GPI systems in order to optimize the time of the GPI puff shots 5-9 were at 1.0 MA/5.4 T with both GPI cameras at 250k frames/sec (shot 8 had a locked mode and distrpted early) shots 10,11 were at 0.8 MA/4.3 T shots 12,13 were at 0.6 MA/3.2 T shots 14-16 were at 0.4 MA/2.2 T shots 17,18 were successful at 1.2 MA/6.5 T, but the GPI cameras lost communication with the data system, probably due to pickup from the higher fields shots 19,20 were at 1.1 MA/5.9 T and the cameras worked OK shots 21,22 were Helium GPI puffs with HeI(587.6 nm) filters, to reduce the background light at high density in D2. The signal levels were a bit too low to be useful shots 23,24 attempt at He prefill, no breakdown shots 25-27 - D2 prefill, He puff into plasma, D2 GPI puff, good GPI data with low background at high density in 027. shots 28-30 - D2 puff from inner wall GPI capillary - this capillary in no longer stopped up! It appears that the obstruction was blown out by the puff on shot 28. Although some of the views are saturated, it is clear that the poloidal "columns" closest to the wall are brightest. There is still good S/N on "column" 6 views at R=46.2 cm and rho=-1.04 cm. The separatrix R=44.8-44.9 cm is on the inside edge of "column" 2 views. Note I hooked up "columns" 2-6, though only views in columns 3-6 are not saturated. In summary: - good GPI data can be obtained with D2 LSN discharges with D2 GPI puffs in both the midplane and X-region views - good GPI data was obtained in the current scan from 0.4-1.1 MA at constant q(a) and moderate density - we got the first data from the 2D array of views at the inboard midplane (shots 28, 30), even though some of the diodes are saturated - high density shots with low GPI background levels can be done with D2 GPI puffs into He background plasmas - parts of MP#561 which were not done today were: density scan, USN/DN/inner wall comparisons, Ohmic H-mode comparison |

| C-Mod ran without major problems today.
The experiment required a current scan from 0.4 MA to 1.2 MA at constant q-95=3.6. The range of toroidal field was 2.16 T to 6.48 T. One concern was assuring that the density was high enough to avoid locked modes. Failed to get that right for shot 006 which disrupted. Helium discharges were required. Because of success of run 1090805, breakdown and operation in He appeared straightforward. There were two successive duds (023, 024), so changed to breakdown in D2 for shot 025. Used the nl_04 gain changes recommended in the fueling prescription described in the physop summary for 1090724 and that worked. The first successful plasma after the change to D2 breakdown (025) had a marfe due to PG3 opening in segment 1. That was removed to get rid of the marfe. Shots 026-028,030 broke down in D2 and ran in He. 026 probably did not have much helium since the target density was close to the residual density from the prefill. Shot 029 was a dud due to an EF1 fault. The puzzle for me is the dud on shot 024. Seems to be at odds with the previous success with helium breakdown on run 1090805 Score card 27 plasmas (26 into rampdown, 1 early disruption) 3 duds (one due to a power system fault) 0 fizzles 30 total |
