| Run Plan for 1090818 MP#563 "Toroidal asymmetry of impurity seeding in support of ITER divertor gas injection requirements" Goal We will attempt to finish up the ohmic L-mode density scan, dialing up some NL04 ~ 1.4e20 discharges. If things go well, we will try adding ICRF power to see if toroidal variations in divertor radiation are affected. Setup NINJA should be filled to 12 PSI N2. Reload shot#1090814019. Shot Plan A. Set up 1.0 MA, 5.4 tesla, NL04 ~ 1.4e20 m-2 Take a shot without N2 injection. Set up NINJA to puff N2 starting at 0.8 seconds for 0.2 seconds duration. Verify that N diagnostic signals are good: Chromex, VUV, CXRS (NV) Run through the capillary sequence (one shot for each): K30-012 D30-012 H30-012 B30-012 F30-012 Take a shot without N2 puff. Run through capillary sequence again (or a sparser set) B. Add ICRF power at ~1 MW level. Compare K_BOT_10 response to puffing at K and B capillaries. Compare 1MW power from D, E, J antennas |

| Run Summary for 1090819
MP#563 "Toroidal asymmetry of impurity seeding in support of ITER divertor gas injection requirements" I suppose our luck had to run out sometime on obtaining a continuous string of nearly flawless discharges for this MP. After the TF scanner repair was completed at around 2:15 pm and a temperature control problem was fixed at A-port horizontal (causing a leak), things started to look good. Shot#5 was the discharge that we wanted to study (first plasma attempt). Shot#6 was a repeat (forgot to enable NINJA) and shot#7 was an N2 puff from a floor capillary. But then the wheels fell off the wagon. Shot #8 was a power supply dud, followed by 9 with no TF. Discharges after this were behaving as if out of control (see PO summary), suggesting that something is not right with a power supply control or two. It may be a rough start for the run tomorrow unless the gremlins can be found. No data were collected in support of MP#563 today. Shot log: 5 -LSN, 1.0 MA, 5.4T, NL04 = 1.4 no probes scanning Next: puff N2 from K30-012 6 -LSN, 1.0 MA, 5.4T, NL04 ~ 1.4 ASP(+3) scanning 0.75, 1.1, 1.35 no NINJA puff. NINJA was not enabled on PLC. Physics Operator Summary for Wed, 19-Aug-2009
MP#563: Toroidal asymmetry of impurity seeding in support of ITER divertor gas
injection requirements
SL: Labombard
PO: wolfe
EO: Cochran, Dekow
The run started late (over a day late in some accounting) following repairs to
the TF tap instrumentation that was damaged in the ground fault incident last
Friday. The connectors from the lower TF voltatge taps were removed from the
fuse box, individually wrapped, and bagged off. The connections from middle
and top taps were left connected, and the fuse boxes grounded.
Megger hipot of the magnet to ground showed 2.5MOhms, unusually low. It is
believed (Gwinn) that this is due to ice and liquid water on the bus tunnel.
Shot#1 was a successful scanner test of the remaining TF voltage taps.
Shot#2 attempted a 10kA magnet test, but had an alarm indication due to
something not being reset in the bypass cabinet and had to be run as no-power;
shot#3 was a successful 10kA test, and shot #4 was successful 50kA TF
test, both under PLC control.
Before shot#5, an air leak opened up at A-port horizontal, due to a heater
being left off, which caused the port to freeze. Pressure in the torus rose to
the high five scale, then came back down to the 8 scale after the heat was
restored.
Plasma operation began with shot#5, 1MA, NL04=1.4e20 baseline (no N2 puff)
shot based on 1090814019, which ran fine despite the air leak. We began a
sequence of toroidal variation of the N2 puff locattion under these
conditions: on #6 the NINJA wasn't enabled, so the first N2 puff was
#7. However shot#8 experienced an oh2l crowbar in pre-charge with lost fuses,
and we never really got back to decent plasmas.
Since there was not going to be sufficient time to complete a repeat scan of
the toroidal puff locations, even with the run extended to 18:00, the SL
decided to try to do the RF heated comparison (part B of the SL Plan) at least
with one antenna to scope out that aspect of the problem. Therefore I imported
segment 2 from 1090814005, the baseline for the nl04=1.1e20 part of the
experiment that was actually completed last Friday.
However, after a no-TF dud on shot#9, shot#10 had a giant marfe and disrupted
early. All aspects of plasma control seemed to be poor on this shot, which
bore no resemblence to the source shot. The only change I had made other than
importing the segment 2 was to reduce the pg3 puff in seg1 to try to counter
an early marfe that appeared on shot#7. Among other symptoms on shot#10 was
the fact that the demand on EF4 was on the positive rail for essentially the
whole seg2 part of the shot, and the plasma was actualy pushed back onto the
inner wall (big clearin error). Thinking there might be a problem with the
imported segment (later PCS_compare indicated the programming was as expected,
just the density change and an irrelevant change in the TF rampdown time) I
re-imported seg2 from shot#7 and reduced the density there. Shot#11 also
disrupted around 0.5sec, but with differnt behavior. EF4 demand looked more
normal, but there were big vertical thrashes around .14sec and a killer vde
begining ~0.45sec. It is unclear why. All supplies seemed to be following
command, and there seemed to be no obvious errors in magnetics.
Still thinking maybe something was broken in the pcs program, I reloaded the
entire shot#7, including the startup segment, and loaded it without
modification. By this time, SL had pretty much given up, and the only purpose
was to diagnose whatever was going wrong so maybe it could get fixed by
tomorrow. Shot#12 had a computer problem (pcdaqeng1) resulting in critical
init failures. Shot#13 ran clean until about 1.2sec and then developed a vde,
although n/ncrit was only about 1.0. I couldn't see any evidence of a supply
not following demand, or of a magnetics error.
Shot #14 was to be a repeat of #13 with the density again lowered to 1.1e20,
and it fizzled with Br0 running negative by 2mT. The major contributer seemed
to be oh2L which was over 1kA more negative than normal, actually running more
negative than oh2u, which is the opposite of the usual ratio. The oh2u and
ef2's were also significantly different. DPCS was commanding less negative
voltage on oh2l before t=0, the correct direction, and the supply was obeying,
according to the supply voltage trace. It actually looked like oh2l had
followed the voltge commands all through pre-charge, unlike OH2u which was
doing its usual behavior of saturating on a demand above -100V between -.8 and
-.3sec. However, the current was getting out of range, and the bus voltage
trace appears to be about 25V more negative than the supply voltage. This
could be a problem in the supply. I've sent email to Bill and Gary to
investigate this.
In the end, no useful data were obtained for the MP today. I suppose we should
be happy that we sort of got back into operation after the ground fault
incident, and we'll hope for better tomorrow.

We've got an air leak in progress Brian - you're under a curse. Go sacrifice a chicken. The leak was apparently at a-port due to an ice-up; heater was off. We got up to the high e-5 scale, back down to mid-8's now. Give it a try, see how dirty it is. plasma! full length. Density looks right, 2pi foil is 750kW, if it's right. Matt is doing a cell access, not sure why. Startup looks decent, no runaways. Next: no changes, Brian will puff N2 |

Next: decrease pg3 in seg1 to try to suppress marfe |

This will be a baseline so no rf, no N2 puff |
| Aug 19 2009 04:18:16:977PM | 1090819009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: decrease pg3 in seg1 to try to suppress marfe on #7, no other changes to startup, but it looks like we're going to change the plan and do the RF part of the experiment at lower density import seg2 from 1090814005 NL04=1.1e20. This will be a baseline so no rf, no N2 puff No TF. Dud. Find that chicken yet, Brian? |
| Aug 19 2009 04:51:32:443PM | 1090819010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: Another try at 1.1e20 baseline Early disruption, huge marfe, disrupts at .57sec Big early thrash on zcur, almost lost it then. I have no idea what happened on this shot. Looks like ef4 is flatout. Re-import from 1090819007 and just change the density |
| Aug 19 2009 06:10:15:487PM | 1090819010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: The differences between shot 10 and shot 7 in PCS were basically the expected ones, namely the density and the pg3 in seg1. There is also a late change in the TF current rampdown, which didn't get reached. I do not understand the reason for the max demand on ef4 voltage in shot#10. The main demand is probably ef2byef4, which is 2000 Amps error. This was not the case on the source shot 1090814005. Possibly it is all caused by the monster marfe on this shot. So why did that happen? There was a big early marfe on 1090814005, like the one I was trying to get rid of by reducing the pg3 in seg1 on shot#10. There was also a runaway problem. |
| Aug 19 2009 05:21:21:813PM | 1090819011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Re-import from 1090819007 and just change the density Disrupts at 0.5sec big vertical thrashes. This time the EF4 voltage doesn't rail, but something is wrong. This one doesn't have the early marfe either, but it almost loses vertical position at .14sec, then goes vertically unstable at .45sec for no obvious reason. |
| Aug 19 2009 05:28:04:177PM | 1090819012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: Reload shot#7 and see if it runs. I think there is something broken, but I can't tell what. Got critical failure in init, something wrong on pcdaqeng1 No power shot |
| Aug 19 2009 05:48:17:353PM | 1090819013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: Reload shot#7 and see if it runs. plasma to 1.3sec, supplies look ok until it goes vde n/nc=1.0, shouldn't be unstable. |
| Aug 19 2009 06:42:49:690PM | 1090819014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: Decrease nl04 demand to 1.1 just to see if we can get it to go through. Fizzle. Br0 went much more negative on this one, Earl points out that oh2l is much more negative on this shot. There are also differences on the oh2u and ef2's. However, while oh2l is normally less negative than oh2u, on this shot the opposite is true. Br0 error is positive by 2mT in phys_aout, has been being right at zero. This implies a power supply not following demand, or not catching up with demand. However, the voltage traces don't bear this out, they look pretty close from -.3 to 0. However, the demand on oh2l is near 0V while normally it is -25V or so. This implies an earlier deviation that is not being fully compensated. It's not so obvious when this happens though |
