Establish standard discharge at 5.4 T, IP =1 MA, nl04~1.

We have had difficulty with normal strike point discharges like
1090811003. We will step the power up to investigate if W is still a
problem.

If it is problematic, we will move to the elevated strike point
discharges (similar to 1090821035) with right gap ~1.0 cm, elongation ~1.6,
upper and lower triangularity 0.3 and 0.55.

If reasonably steady EDAs are not obtained, we will lower the plasma
current to 0.9 MA and will lower it until reasonable EDAs are
obtained.

Run the ICRF power at 3 MW from 0.7 to 1.1 sec and increase to 4 MW
from 1.1 to 1.5 sec.

If plasma performance is maintained in excess of 50 MJ (30 discharges)
increase RF power 5 MW.

Monitor stored energy, H89, Prad, B and Mo.

Cryopump (yes/no): no

Machine was kept at 35 degrees C during boronization and through the weekend.

Start from 1090811003 ("normal" outer strike point on the W tiles); ramp the RF power up slowly, monitoring W, disruptivity, radiated power, etc. If there are problems, we will move the strike point above the W tiles.

Run Summary

Plasma performance was much improved over 1090811 and 1090812. We had
several 200 kJ, 1 MA plasmas with 4 MW ICRF injected. The performance
degraded with ~15 MJ of ICRF power or about 8-10 shots. These
discharges were afflicted by injections of either Mo, W, or Ti/Ni/Cu,
and one discharge was impacted by a lower Z flake, maybe Zr with
typical strike point. With the strike point raised, discharge
performance was often interrupted by injections usually Ti/Ni/Cu.
With 4 MW and J limited to <1.5 MW, injections were controlled and
plasma performance was reasonable (25,26). Comparing 026 to earlier
discharges, the H-ITER-89 is not terribly degraded 1.5-1.6 versus
1.6-1.7. Prior to 025 and 026, one might argue the boronization
eroded quickly but 025 and 026 were decent performers. Just need to
figure out how to get more power from J with the raised strike point.

This was a good run. The boronization seems to have been quite effective, with steady state Mo levels low at high power ICRF. An interesting aspect of the boronization, in addition to returning to settings from some years back, using higher fill, pulsing ECRF, and no poloidal field currents, was that it was completed over Friday night/Saturday morning, followed by ECDC in He and then D_2. Over the rest of the weekend, the machine was kept at 35 C, with no ECDC. Runaways were generally not a problem, and the startup was robust with relatively high D_2 prefill pressures. This behavior is quite different from the usual, when right after an overnight boronization fill pressures need to be quite low, and fizzles have often been a problem. I fiddled with the fill pressures a bit, lowering it after disruptions, and then raising it again after a full length shot. The programming for fields in segment 1 was not changed all day. There were no fizzles or duds today.

There were some Mo injections in early shots that caused trouble, and somewhat later in the run, W injections. Moving the strike point above the row of W tiles alleviated that problem, but was replaced by injections from the J-port faraday screen (Ti, Ni, Cu). We tried changing density, plasma current, and gaps. Decreasing the outer gap, while also increasing the inner gap, appeared to delay the faraday screen injections, but did not eliminate them. Trading off some J power for D+E was effective in eliminating the faraday screen injections on some shots. The last shot was at 1.2 MA, right gap ~ 1.2 cm, left gap ~ 1.8 cm. While the x-point was still raised compared to the beginning of the day, this shot had, according to efit, outer strike point almost exactly in the middle of the third tile up from the bottom (the W row). The ramped tile thermocouples confirm this as the location of maximum heat deposition averaged over the shot. In spite of this, there was no strong evidence for W influx with 3 MW ICRF.

We have an interesting comparison of H-mode thresholds as a function of x-point height. As was seen on 1090821, raising the X/strike locations leads to a significantly increased power threshold (shots 18 and 19 make a good pair to see this).

On shots 3 and 4 we had faults from the OH force real-time interlock, which took out the supplies just after 0.2 seconds. Moving the EF1 crow bar time to 0.2 s (from 0.12 s) appeared to resolve this problem, which did not recur.

After shot 18, an air leak opened up, reaching about 3e-5T on IGT, and causing about a 1 hour delay. There were no obvious deleterious effects on subsequent operation, except that the TF cooling was throttled back, and average time between shots increased as a result.
